View Full Version : Are there any challenging hat patterns out there?

I've just about run out of ideas for hats (my favourite thing to make) except for shapes, but plain shaping tends to bore me so now I'm trying to find patterns with challenging concepts or embellishments in the design. However, my search has been unsucessful. Have any of you seen something more interesting than "sc in the round until your hat is big enough" ?

Here is a link to a couple of hats which I have made.
I have not written out a pattern for either of them as I have generally been able to show how they are made. May be a little hard to explain as I made them both from scratch, but I can give it a go if you are prepared to give it a try.
About 35 yrs ago, I worked out how to do the double layer hat on the right of the picture.
I was lucky enough to get it to work first time I tried it so I ended up making hundreds of them over the following 10yrs or so. (I had a wool shop)
Sometimes in fine yarn, sometimes in lovely mohair, sometimes in cotton. Seems like any weight of yarn works, you just do more increasing and more rows the finer the yarn.
E-mail me if you would like the pattern and I will have go at writing it out.
The other is just a normal Beret shape with ridges of 2 or 3 Raised DCs worked together around the post of the stitch on the first round, then around the raised stitches on the following rounds.
I also have a childs hat with earflaps which is cute.:cheer

No wonder you made and sold so many of those hats. They are wonderful. You should write the patterns up and if you do, please put me on the list.
I love your user name. Where did you come up with that one?

I made this for my daughter (instead of using super chunky, I used regular worsted weight).
The shaping is a little odd at first, but it turns out perfectly and the hat is very warm and stylish. Use all one colour, two colours or a rainbow for different effects.

OKay, this is still all simple sc, but what about using some tapestry crochet techniques to work graph designs into your hats? I'm thinking stars, flames, band logos, skull and crossbones... Even fair isle style crochet...

http://members.aol.com/JSchlossma/4starc.htmlhere's something you may like.
also, somewhere on crochetville someone did a post about skull patterns, there's a bunch of graphs for skulls. some small, some large......could be worked into something like this too. I've used one of the skull patterns to put on a purse... it worked out pretty well.
from CPC I've done the blue star cloche, it turned out nice, and also the professional hat, which I love and wear a lot! CPC has a great page for hats.
also, from an msn group, there's a snow bunny hat i've been wanting to make. it's a hat with ear flaps, that is round on top, not pointed or whatever, and she used different types of yarn, fuzzy and stuff. this one has been on my list for along time!

I used spike stitches with about five or six different coloured scraps in this pattern:

It looked fantastic and my daughter and I always fight over who's going to wear it!! I should just make another one...

This one might be challenging, more from figuring out the translation, rather than the pattern... but who knows.. I certainly haven't tackled it yet.

:eek Wow, I am humbled by the interest in my hats so I will give it a go and see if I can write out the patterns.
Our yarns and hook sizes are different here and we also use the English version of the stitches although I have become used to the US versions and terms you se.
Maybe I will do it now as I have 3 little kids coming to stay from tonight, through to Monday, ( School Holidays in NZ) so I wont get the chance over the weekend.
My problem with patterns is, I tend to adapt as I go so things can change as I go along.
Have fun.:hug

PS Readyfox was asking where I came up with my User name. My middle name is May and my husband started calling me Aggie May, for some reason, many years ago, then when I was expecting our daughter, (43 next month) she was nick-named Aggie May Junior. Hers did not stick and she is glad about that, but mine did. Now he just calls me Ag. Some people think that is my name and get a surprise when they find out it is really Colleen.:hug This is an example of how to make a short story long instead of the other way around. I always did talk too much.
I am off to try writing the patterns.
Watch this space.:hook

Hi, folks, it is 10.25am Saturday here and I have 5 children in my house, (8, 6, 5, 3 & 3) Two are here for the day and 3 are staying the weekend.
I did start the pattern process but did not get it completed so it will be next week when I get back to it.
Hope you dont mind waiting.

Have you tried one of the crocheted hats done with crochet thread yet. They are very Victorian looking and spring is coming.

:hook Ladies, the school holidays are almost over so I will get my time back so I will have time to try writing out the patterns for the hats I showed in an earlier post on this forum.
Keep an eye out over the next couple of weeks.
I ended up with 6 kids under 9 at my house yesterday and because it was very hot outside, we could only go outside for a short time, before we would be melting.
Thank goodness the children all get on well or I would have gone up the wall. The school aged ones go back to school next Tuesday so I will try to get a break at the beach before the weather turns cold again.
Have fun.

Here's some nice hats - http://www.crochetgarden.com/crochetpatterns.html
Go down almost half way, the Rugged Mountain Snowcap collection. I love cables and these are quick but the stitches are enticing.

I really like this pattern. http://www.crochetgarden.com/raingarden/winterhat.html It's got front post, back post and beautiful crochet cables! Oh and it is warm!
I made two for my uncles and the pattern doesn't change for sizing, just change the hook size.

:cheerWell, it seems such a long time since this thread started and it would seem that there is still an interest in my hat pattern.
I cant even remember if I ever sent it to anyone and here we are, 2 years later and the children have just gone back to school after the 2007/08 summer holidays.
I did write the pattern for the double layer hat, the one on the right of the picture, and I am certain I did share it with a few people.
It is a little tricky to explain how to add the second layer so I think I may have been a bit reluctant to send it to everyone who asked for it, because I did not want to set anyone up to fail.
Mind you, the first layer is just a nice plain beret, without the mesh layer.
It is a little tricky writing a hat pattern compared to an afghan because it needs to fit so you need to be more precise with the yarn and hook sizes so I just wrote it for the yarn I prefer, which is 8ply (DK) and a 4mm hook.
If you want it and I have not sent it to you already, send me a PM and I will send it to you.
Have fun.
