UPDATE: Jingles96 has graciously offered to host and "organize" this crochet a-long, please see this post (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showpost.php?p=284633) for instructions to join. Visit her Crochet Olympics Website/Blog (http://www.jinglelady.us/crochet/olympics/) for details and to join.

While out browsing the world wide web, I wandered into yarn harlot (http://www.yarnharlot.ca/blog/olympics2006.html)'s blog and got excited that she has organized a Knitting Olympics. I got to thinking it might make a fun CAL here. I am participating in the knitting olympics, so don't feel up to organizing the CAL here, but thought I would throw this idea out, for someone else to start.

The rules are:
1 - The project must be a challenge for you to complete in the specified time frame.
2 - You can NOT start until opening ceremonies (Feb 10, 2pm Eastern Time)
3 - You MUST finish by closing ceremonies (16 days later, Feb 26th)
4 - You can do prep work before (guage swatches, winding, etc), but no working on the actual project.
5 - Pick something that is doable, but challenging. Do not set yourself up for failure.

These rules are paraphrased from yarn harlot's Olympic Rules. It sounds like lots of fun. As a beginning knitter, I am going to do a sweater (my first knitted wearable).

Wishing everyone luck that chooses to participate. If someone does decide to take over this, it should probably be approved by an admin and moved to the Crochet A-long thread.

BTW - she has over 1300 participants, can we out do her?

I was wondering if anybody would start up a crochet version. I'm fighting with myself about whether I want to join the knitting one or not. I'm a COMPLETE novice knitter, so I could make just about any (small) thing and have fulfilled my requirements. Plus it would push me to keep knitting...

As for crochet, it would push me to finally make a wearable top for myself - something I've been wanting to do, but procrastinating about.

As for hosting the CAL, I could be persuaded. I'd definitely lend out hosting space for the page and blog button graphics and such.

Oh, heck - if nobody else has volunteered by the time I post this, I'll organize a Crochet Olympics. :) I'm horrible with making buttons though - but I'll host them and organize a page on my domain and such.

I'll start the page up tonight when I get home from work. Go Crochetters!! We can get at least as many crocheters signed up, right? :cheer:cheer:cheer

Awesome!! I can't knit a bit so I was totally out on that one, but I'm game for the Crochet Olympics!! I'm going to make myself a wearable... maybe something from Cool Crochet?

I'm in! I want to make a short-sleeve cardigan for my mom (finally found a pattern that she likes), but she wants it in Estelle Royal Cotton, which is much finer than I'm used to. It'll be a challenge for me, but so satisfying if I can give her something she'll love.

Ooooh. Sounds like fun!! My challenge will be beginning a project and seeing it to the end in two weeks without getting distracted! I don't know if I can do it...

Good idea!

I am also a novice knitter, and I haven't officially signed up, but plan to do an aromatherapy tea cozy from Canadian Living: http://tinyurl.com/95tao
(I bet this could be crocheted nicely, too. As a matter of fact, if the knitting gets too tough, maybe I'll try to design a crocheted version!)

I would be game for the Crocheting Olympics also. The tea cozy is small enough that I could probably do a crocheting project as well. I think I would do the "Fit to be Tied" shrug for myself. I made one for my brother's GF and am about to start on one for my sister. I really like that pattern, and it's a quick one. I used Jo-Ann's Angel Hair yarn for it, which is nice and soft.

Looks like we're getting a good bunch going here. Woo hoo!

DainaJ - That fit to be tied shrug looks cute! However, since you've already done it, is it still a challenge? Rule one states the project should be a challenge for you to complete in the 16 days. Or is the time frame the challenge? Maybe something else for the Crochet Olympics would be more challenging - just a suggestion. :)

I will join! I already posted over on Craftster.com about joining their "Crochet Olympics" but theirs doesn't seem to be developing into much....

Yes I will co host with you. I am thinking of doing a granny sq blitz for those days setting a goal (I did 500+ In a month) Not sure what and then pushing myself to exceed it. It would benifit my Amegios project and the people in Mexico. Humm??? If not Maybe I will try a poncho never made one before. What do you all think???

Hi Katchkan! Wow - something challenging for you must be superhuman for me. :) Welcome aboard. :cheer

As for sign up, I'll set up an email account tonight and I'll post it here. Then I'll set up a page to list everybody's name, link to website (if available), and project they'll be working on.

Tell me about it, Tina. I'm the last one who posted in their Crochet Olympics thread, and that was over a day and a half ago. :ohdear

I am soooo in this, OK? I've already got the yarn for the project, and I'm prepping for it. I'm making a Snow White baby afghan for my soon-to-be-born great niece. Hopefully she'll be born before the Olympics..my niece's due date is Saturday.

Ok All - I've got an email set up for you to send your sign ups to. Send your Name (or Nick if you prefer), a link to your blog (if you have one/want to), and the project you will work on to crochetolympics@jinglelady.us (crochetolympics@jinglelady.us)

Remember:

The rules are:
1 - The project must be a challenge for you to complete in the specified time frame.
2 - You can NOT start until opening ceremonies (Feb 10, 2pm Eastern Time)
3 - You MUST finish by closing ceremonies (16 days later, Feb 26th)
4 - You can do prep work before (guage swatches, winding, etc), but no working on the actual project.
5 - Pick something that is doable, but challenging. Do not set yourself up for failure.

I've set up a page to post all these to at: http://www.jinglelady.us/crochet/olympics/

Currently this site is empty. If anybody would like to lend their design talents to helping make this site look purty, I'd really appreciated it. While I'm great at tweaking designs to get them how I want them, I'm very bad at coming up with something on my own. I'll link to you and send you a pretty thread bookmark if you help. Pretty please with sugar on top? :blush

I am in! I think I have an idea of what I want to make but have to decide on a pattern.

I do not know much about site design but I was just playing around with buttons so I made some buttons & blinkies for this CAL. I hope you like them. I tried to make them different sizes for different blog needs.

Ok, I am willing to create a site for the Crochet Olympics. Unless you have somone else who has already said they would. If I do this I have a few conditions...

I would like your input on what you want it to look like....I have an imagination so I can throw one together with little input... I like input however...
No one can make fun of my design....:blush. :nahnah

This sounds like great fun, you guys, and sure wish I could join in, but I already feel like I'm in the crochet olympics, just keeping up with all my crochetalongs !

You guys have fun -- it'll be neat to see what all you choose to do and how many can get it done in their time frame.

Good luck ~~~:)

i've sent the email and now there's no turning back. i'm going to try the fluffy pink shrug. i did it back when i first learned to crochet, but only did the sleeves part cause the ruffles looked pretty daunting. this time, i'm going to try to figure out the whole thing:think . my mom says not to look at the pattern as a whole. just do one row at a time and it won't look so scary.:hook i think i'll do it in something inexpensive and then, if it works, i'll buy the good stuff. if not, i can frog it and use it for something else.:lol

Now, to find the perfect doily pattern for me......hmmmmmmm

I've updated the site with those email signups that came in as of 4am. I have about 6 more in my inbox, but I gotta go scoot to work. (I'll probably add more throughout the day.)

LisaIzMe suggested setting the site up as a blog. Great idea! I'd thought about making this an entry in my Crochet blog, but I hate that design. Since I need to play around with upgraded blog software anyway, I'll investigate installing & setting up a new blog for this on the weekend. So expect lots of changes to the look and feel!

Ok, I am willing to create a site for the Crochet Olympics. Unless you have somone else who has already said they would.

MamaHooks - Thank You! :hug I'll pm you later with more info, ok? And of course nobody will make fun of your design. In any case - it'll be LOADS better than what is there now. :lol

Ok - off to work now. Go Crochetters! :cheer:cheer

Like the other Rebecca, I'm also already signed up for the Knitting Olympics so I won't be joining you but I'm really excited to see what gets made!! Unfortunately the only thing crochet-wise that would fit the rules for me would be a full-size afghan (because of time limits, they usually take me forever to finish!) and I don't have the funds for that right now. I will be knitting either the Jaywalker sock pattern or The Flower Basket Shawl from Interweave Knits.

I can totally relate to you on the afghan. I too, would have a hard time finding something that would be a challenge for me to finish (crocheted) in the time frame, though the afghan thing would work, cause I just get so bored with the repetitiveness of a large afghan. I already know I can do sweaters in a week, so I have decided to do the Knitting Olympics, since I am soo new at knitting. I am doing the Linie 89 sweater at elann.com.

And unlike Kimberly, I'm not confident enough in my knitting speed to take on two events. Maybe will change my mind, since it just seems like so much fun, but at the present, I am sticking with one knitted sweater.

Me neither. I'm ready to get started NOW!!!!

But can I make a few suggestions for things to do while waiting?

1) Throughly clean the house, so you won't have major housework chores during the Olympics. You don't want to spend precious crocheting time with a mop and a spray bottle of window cleaner.

2) Get to the grocery store and buy your food for two weeks. You don't want to waste time getting that stupid gallon of milk (and you know you'll get stuck behind that lady who insists that can of green beans that rang up for 63 cents should have only been 57 cents).

3) Start preparing those casseroles to be frozen...you'll want quick and easy dinners during the Olympics.

Just get those picky odds and ends jobs done and over before the Olympics. For example, hopefully I'll get my W2s next week, so I can do my taxes next weekend. Hubby is already asking "When are we getting the refund." I know he won't let me hold off until after the Olympics to get the taxes done.

I haven't decided what pattern I'm using but I'm making a cardigan/bolero. I've NEVER made one. I have it narrowed down to 2 patterns.

I'm doing it in Berry Blue SS & maybe trimmed with some red or black? Not sure about the edging yet but a CC would be pretty I think. I did make a poncho with SS & it feels sooo nice! Not too heavy & not too open for late Feb-April or May.

Okay All - I've updated the site with all the participant althetes who've contacted me so far. I'm thinking about rearranging the list to be by type of project - ie, thread, wraps, shrugs, blankets, baby, etc. What do you think?

I'll be installing Wordpress blog software this weekend and anticipate having at least a rudimentary blog up by the end of the weekend. I'm envisioning this as a group blog where all athletes can log in and upload progress notes, progress photos and such. We'll see how easy or hard that is with WordPress....

Go Crocheteers! Woohoo! And keep the sign ups rolling in. We've got a total of 18 athletes competing so far!

Several people have asked me what the purpose of having a Crochet Olympics was. My first thought was "does everything have to have a purpose?" But not wanting to sound snippy (and while the response does sound sarcastic and snippy.. it's not, it's a real question), I have replied with these are the reasons/purposes to have a Crochet Olympics:

1) Fun
2) A self challenge
3) something to do while watching the Olympics
3b) protection from mind-numbing boredom while being forced to watch the Olympics (your opinion may vary)
4) an excuse for another project
5) all or none of the above.

And I have a suggestion. Could the link for the webpage perhaps be placed on the first post? It's kinda hard to find right now. Thanks.

Depending on how many times I got the "what is the purpose of the Crochet Olympics?" I think the answer you have, snippy or otherwise, would more than be appropriate...

Why Crochet Olympics? Why not? It's just another excuse to do something we love, but with a twist...

I've just joined the Crochet Olympics too. I'm going to do the Penina bolero jacket from Cool Crochet. I posted about Crochet Olympics to my blog, and I also added a sidebar with the button, encouraging others to join us.

I hope we get a lot of people participating!

Even though I'm attempting a sweater for the Knitting Olympics, I want to participate in this too.

I don't have a project yet, but I'm in love with the item on the cover this book (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1400080614/qid=1138436244/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_1/103-7091003-2885455?n=507846&s=books&v=glance).

I must be insane:eek!!!

That's the one I'm gonna do vhanna...isn't it great!

Well, I got the book (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1400080614/qid=1138490463/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_1/103-7091003-2885455?n=507846&s=books&v=glance), and I will attempt the cover sweater although it has many nice projects. It just so happens that I even have the yarn for it in stash, so it's meant to be.

LeAnna, I'm glad you'll be working on this project too.:yay It will be fun, so I'll go sign up.

Several people have asked me what the purpose of having a Crochet Olympics was.
....
And I have a suggestion. Could the link for the webpage perhaps be placed on the first post? It's kinda hard to find right now. Thanks.

Lisa - all good points about "why?" Like Eurolyons said - why not? Personally, for me it's a self challenge (like you said) to do something I've never done and a personal commitment to doing it in a specified time limit. And it's fun!

I pm'd Crochet SmartCat asking her to modify the first post to point to the signup email and website. Maybe one of the moderators can do that too? I'll wait for Crochet SmartCat to respond first though. :)

I'm really excited. I'm going to work on installing the blog this evening....

Though I will definately be knitting and crocheting during the Olympics, and this sounds like fun ladies think I'll have to pass. I'll be focusing on my Hat a Week commitment, finishing the afghan for the young man in the Naval Academy, some baby items for a group on yahoo, and somethings for military (haven't quite figured that piece out yet though).

I don't typically watch lots of the Olympics, though I do enjoy the ice dancing and skating, hubby likes skiing, and hockey.

OHHHH if I was young and had the body again, I'd make the 3rd one..

And There are other alternatives to Paton's Grace. If you have a Hobby Lobby near you, look at their Omega Sinfonia. It's the same weight as Grace and works up very similarly, and is 1/2 the price.

Also you might look at Reynold's Saucy Sport.

AND There's http://www.yarn-and-threadbylisa.com/ (absolutely no connection other than the first name). She sells the discontinued colors of Grace on ebay for 24.89/bag (10 rolls in a bag).

Hope this helps a little.

Just to let you know - I'm here, and I've received more entries to the Crochet Olympics, I just haven't had time to post them to the site or even create the blog for the site. I DID manage to get some configuration for the blog done, but then another bridesmaids thing flared up and I spent 4 hours on the phone talking to everybody. Ug, really, this wedding is going to drive me insane. :eek A friend jokes about just eloping, and while it seems tempting, I'm not going to do it. But the plans and the miscommunications, and the stress.....and there's still 9mos to go!!

Anyway - I could go on for hours, but I won't. I WILL post new entries to the site tomorrow. I should have the blog up tomorrow evening too - I'm doing nothing but website stuff tomorrow night! Mamahooks & I discussed the design yesterday and she said she should have something for my on Monday, so we'll probably see that too.

Rebecca - the button is very cute. I love the fact it has all the Olympic colors in it. :manyheart I'll upload it to the site tomorrow.

Good night!

:yayI got to be a lucky one today, my bil showed up and we put him to work babysitting our 4 kids so we could run errands (how nice to have some alone time, even if just groc. shopping)

:thinkSoooooo..... I'm in Wally World, desperately trying to put together a yarn combo to make my project... and I left with 2 balls of RH Symphony & 2 skeins of Simply Soft... our WM has a very limited yarn selection, lack of competetors.

:eekTo the uh oh... I decided I don't want to make the Seraphina shawl. I cannot stand the way the pattern is written. I really like the butterfly wing shawl pattern I found somewhere here in Crochetville (or was it craftster? can't remember) but the more I think about it, the more I would like to do something rectangular. I'm definately not making this to be flattering, just something to knock the chill those late summer nights while we're sitting around the firepit looking at stars. I've looked at shawl & wrap patterns all day (even added scarves to my list- they can be extended into a nice rectangle...)

Any ideas?!? Does creating my own pattern count? hmmmm...... (stop petting the yarn, cris!) decisions, decisions!

Cris~

ps... no, I didn't buy purple yarn ****

I LOVE that item too. I must have it. I must.

Not only do I plan to make the cover sweater from Lion Brand Yarn Vintage Styles for Today (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1400080614/qid=1138436244/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_1/103-7091003-2885455?n=507846&s=books&v=glance) for the Olympics, there are other things I like in it to crochet and knit in the future.

It has a nice format with lots of photos and schematics, and it's nice to see pictures of the original items too.

Also, unlike a lot of books which have crocheting and knitting patterns, this one has lots of things to crochet.

I recommend the book. Do check it out.

Well, I work full-time, have 2 small kids, and my husband is in grad. school, plus we volunteer, so getting anything done is a challenge! I may change my choice, though! I would like to make some type of wearable.

It will definitely be a challenge for me because I'm not used to a pattern without row by row instructions... there's just a chart AGH!!!!

Now I have to go to my LYS during their superbowl sale and hope they have what I want in the quantity I want....

It's come to my attention that some of you may have had difficulty signing up for the Crochet Olympics because the signup post had the email address with a period at the end. I'd edited the post to remove the period. Note: the mail-to link worked okay, so if you used that, don't worry.

Just to be clear: the signup email is crochetolympics@jinglelady.us

I've received 4 more signups today - I just haven't updated the site. This cold is draining my energy. I'll update the site tomorrow morning. Oh, I also have done nothing with the blog install today. I'll work on it tomorrow.

Thanks for the wishes to get better and get over the bridal stress. :hug

if there was a tatting olympics, you could do a triathalon. :lol Oh goodness!!! That would cause mental insanity! Doing the Knitting Olympics and the Crochet Olympics is MORE than enough for me! I think that I would have to call in sick to work for the whole entire time! :lol

I still have not picked out exactly which doily pattern I am going to do! I have several old doily books that I picked up on e-bay a while back that all look fairly difficult, but manageable! A lot of them call for size 40 thread though, and are listed as being 20-24 inches in diameter.....I cringe to think how big they would turn out with size 10 thread! :eek

Well I haven't picked a pattern, need to do that today. Also checking for yarn. More than likely either a poncho, shawl or shrug. I need to find an easy pattern for the shrug as I have had no luck in doing them. Glad I'm here.

Try the Mrs Who. It looks complicated but it's deceptively easy once you read through the instructions.

Ok, I've changed my mind yet again. I am NOT going to do the Mrs. Who's shrug afterall. I was going to make it for my niece but I don't have a sweater her size to get the measurements from so I'm scrapping that idea for the moment. Instead I'm going to do the Cream Cotton Shrug (http://www.dianelangan.com/CrochetPatternFiles/websafenames/cotshrug.html) which I love because I can use some of my 4 ply cotton!!! I don't do too well with fitted garments so I think this will be challenging. Do I have to re-sign up since I'm changing what I plan to make???

Okay, I've sent off my email and I'm now on the sidelines warming up!

I've chosen a project I was gearing up to start anyway, which is the Quilted Trellis afghan from the book Mosaic Magic. All my materials are gathered, and all I need to do is make a copy of the pattern to work from, as it's easier for me than dragging the whole book around. I will be eating breathing and sleeping with this project - and will have to drastically reduce my computer time - in order to meet my challenge, which is to make an afghan in 16 days!

Good luck with your cardigan! I love it & can't wait to see it! I would do that one but I couldn't understand the instructions. :lol

I'm going to do the blue one on the back cover of Leisure Arts 4 Crochet Shrugs. That one is done with chenille though. I am using Caron SS, which I love to use & with SS it will be lighter & less "hot" (not sexy hot but sweaty hot :lol ) . Also, it will be a lot less inexpensive with SS than chenille. I would like to make it a bit longer...more cardigan length but not sure if time will permit...we'll see how it goes & how it looks as a bolero on me. Bolero/shrugs are adorable but all the ones I see are on younger models.

I decided to do this sweater from garnstudio. I love the look, and the color.... but I always do blue so I might try a different color.

http://www.garnstudio.com/lang/en/visoppskrift.php?d_nr=56&d_id=14&lang=us (http://www.garnstudio.com/lang/en/visoppskrift.php?d_nr=56&d_id=14&lang=us)

It will definitely be a challenge for me because I'm not used to a pattern without row by row instructions... there's just a chart AGH!!!!

Now I have to go to my LYS during their superbowl sale and hope they have what I want in the quantity I want....

Oh, no need to feel ashamed, believe me! The only reason I'm taking on this challenge is because I do have the time, since I'm not working. With a full-time job and other duties to juggle, there'd be no way I could do it, especially as slow as I crochet! Who knows, though, maybe this event will help me break through that speed barrier I've been struggling with? That would be so nice, seeing as how I have so many projects I want to do and would love to complete them in my lifetime! :lol I have everything I need (yarn, patterns, tools and implements, even time) for nearly all of my major WIMs, except that speed. :eek:blush

Okay, off to practice! :hook

:yay Hooray, I just signed up! But not just for one olympic event--for TWO! For the Crochet Olympics, I too am making a baby blanket for a friend who is expecting--due in September. It's my first-ever baby blanket. If I can get it done this fast, maybe I can actually get done half of the things I intended to make for her before the baby comes... :lol

For the Knitting Olympics, I'm making my first-ever sweater! It's a dog sweater--the "Howl" pattern from the book "Stitch N' Bitch", for our chihuahua, Zoey. I'm especially interested in overcoming that challenge--breaking the "sweater barrier" is going to be a very special event for me!

And as if enjoying these wonderful events were not enough, I was thinking about getting myself a special something if I am able to complete both events. On the crochet side, I was tempting myself with a "Happy Hooker" shirt from the Crochetville store. :manyheart Just want to show my love for my new community!

There was some discussion about what to do until the competition starts...aside from shopping, and perhaps over-feeding my hamster so she doesn't need me for awhile (Just kidding! :devil ), I'm working on my first-ever (see a theme here? :P ) thread project: a bookmark I designed myself, in double-crochet and shell stitch.

As long as we're on the first-ever topic--this will be my first crochet-along!

Were I going to make a triathalon event out of this, I could take up my friend's offer to give me a refresher course in spinning, and set a certain amount to spin before the time is up! Of course, I'd be happy if I could just finish carding that raw wool I bought... (What was I thinking? :ohdear )

:c9 Ah, the yarny bliss...with so much to try, maybe I'll be able to initiate a full-blown habit of completing projects on a regular basis! It's great to have people to yarn-along with! :yay

Where's the pattern???

goldi316
February 2, 2006, 10:05 AM
The "Mrs Who Shrug" is not a stitch by stitch pattern. If you read the thread, what you get are instructions and general guidelines for creating the garment, customizing it to your own tastes by choosing your own stitch pattern to use and using your own measurements for fit. If you are the kind of person who must have a completely spelled-out pattern, row by row - you won't get that here! But I can tell you it's a great way to break out of that dependency on patterns and grow by leaps towards learning to create your own designs!

Hello Fellow Yarn-letes! (I totally stole that from Pandora's email entry).

I'm going to be working on the website for the next hour or so. Hopefully now that the cold/flu thing is mostly gone, as well as some of the bridal stress (it's NOT going to get me down!), the techy stuff will all make sense and fall into place. Cross your fingers, knock on wood, etc.

As a bonus, MamaHooks sent me her design this morning. I haven't peeked yet, though, so it's a surprise for me too.

I'll update here as soon as the site is back up and going. Oh, I haven't updated any of the entries received today bc I wanted to wait until all this web design stuff was in place. As soon as that is, I'll add the new entries.

Go Crocheteers! :cheer

Hopefully finishing up cleaning the house and making meals for the next two weeks. I'll watch "Dancing with the Stars," then probably get to bed fairly early.

Is it starting at a certain time? ...I think knitting olympics starts at 2 pm. That day (10th) is going to be so slow if we have to wait until 2 pm LOL! But exciting too...

Yeah, it starts at 2. I don't exactly know how I'm going to work it on Friday. I get off of work at 4:00pm. I'll probably see about changing my tour of duty, so I'll only work until 2:30 (go into work at 6 AM that day...in which case, I'll get to bed right after Dancing with the Stars on Thursday night). If I'm able to pull that off, I'll get home at 2:45 and start working.

Of course, that's also the weekend my daughter comes home from college for the weekend (she has an orthodonist appointment). I'll probably have to drive down to pick her up, and that's a ninety minute trip one way. So I have a bad feeling I'll be spending much of Friday on the road.

I might not have to pick up up until Sat morning. If that's the case, hopefully I can get hubby to drive down and me drive home. At least, I can crochet while he drives.

So - go have a gander and look around. Let me know (at crochetolympics@jinglelady.us) if anything looks screwy or anything.

I haven't updated the site with today's entries - I'm bushed. I'm off to bed. I'll add them tomorrow morning.

Oh, and Cris made us a new blog button. Check it out!

:yay You like the Yarn-lete thing? I'm so totally flattered! :hook

Until Feb. 9th, I'm going to sit here wondering where my tax refund is, so that I can buy the rest of the yarn I need for my projects! I *might* have enough for the baby blanket, but I don't have anything for the sweater. Oh--I'll also be chasing the chihuahua around the house with a tape measure. I tried to take her measurements today, and it turns out she's scared of the measuring tape. :hyper <---- We call her our caffeine dog. So if I can't get her measurements, I can always make a sweater for the beagle instead--she's much more placid. But I prefer to make one for Zoey, because she's always shivering, especially in the winter. I think she could use one.

By the way, it's awesome to hear about people making their projects for charity! Although my Olympic projects aren't for charity, I just signed up for the "25 Things" CAL; a most worthy cause. My Grandma broke her arm :eek the other day (she's ok now, thank goodness!), but when she is all healed, she promises to teach me how to make granny squares, so I will be able to join in the square contributions.

By the way...Kimberly, I'm so glad you joined the olympics...your posts have & will bring a lot of giggles to it. That is good! We are going to need it to break up the tension when we are all jumping hurdles on our projects lol! hey! Wait a minute! It might be all fun and laughs now...but you must realize that when it comes time to compete, I am going to show up with my game face on! :P I want...no I need....no I will have those medals! And anyone who says otherwise....well.... :tryme :rofl

Now, all kidding aside, I think that we have a really great group of crocheters all going out and competing together, and I am so glad that I decided to join in! With all of the cheering from each other, we can all do our personal best and strive towards meeting our personal challenges. Yes, there will be pitfalls and detours and sometimes bright glaring stop signs for all of us during our quest for Crochet Olympic gold. The Olympics is not about winning, it is about team spirit, coming together and doing the best you can.....from the words of the Sport Goofy Anthem -

"You can always be number one, You can always be a winner. Even if you've played the game for years, or you play like a beginner! So if you stumble and fall, if you fumble the ball, just keep on giving your all and having fun! You may be first or last place, or you may fall on your face, but if you're running the race, you're number one!"

My yarn is ready (Estelle DK Royal Cotton) and my pattern is highilighted and ready! I've also made and frogged one gauge swatch with a 3.5 hook. I'm going to need to adjust the tension and the sizing because I need to make an extra large and the pattern only goes to large. I've figured out that the 3.5 hook gives me an extra 1/4" for every 4". I'm trying the a 3.75 now (which seems pointless). They both may prove to be too large, so I'm also going to pick up a 3mm (my hooks are getting smaller all the time!) and try that. I need to add about 6 inches to the largest bust size and the 3.5mm hook gives me 10 extra inches.

All this training is making me tired. I need to go and crochet something to stop thinking about it....:hook

I've decided on the ripple pattern i'm going to use, i don't now how to put a link in to show everyone, and to add to the difficulty, i got the yarn for it..baby yarn..ahhhhh...in a light pink. I chose a ripple pattern w/ baby yarn because i get bored with ripples easily and this is my excuse to actually finish one lol :flower and baby yarn will make it really soft and cuddly i think.

I've just added about 14 new Yarn-letes to the Crochet Olympics (http://jinglelady.us/crochet/olympics/). Woo hoo! Our numbers are growing!

I've also tweaked the site a little more. My fiance said it was a little hard to read, so I reduced the opacity a tad. Did it help?

Is everybody hard at work training for their event? Personally, I haven't crocheted a bit this week, nor have I finalized the pattern I'll be using. I think I'd best go off and do that now!

Oh, and thanks for all the well wishes! I'm feeling 95% better now. My poor fiance though - I think I gave him his cold back. :blush

I think my yarn has arrived at the APO, but DH wasn't able to pick it up yesterday (and they are closed today) so Monday, hopefully, I'll have my yarn for the event.

My training involves finishing a charity afghan on Thursday and starting a baby blanket for my coworker and his wife last night. But Anna has okayed my request to include dyeing yarn as prep work, so I'm going to start that today. I'm making my sister one of Marlo's beautiful felted totes, and I'm dyeing wool a deep purple, her favorite color. The website looks good. The type is easy to read. It's not easy to get background graphics to do what they need to do lol (visible but not overpowering the page content) ...so mamahooks & jingles, you're doing a wonderful job working on it. I like how the tables fade out the background a little.

MamaHooks...I could help with the banner if you want some help. I use PhotoImpact 6 & it has a pretty good banner utility. I could send you a few sample jpg & you could play with them to your liking or use the way it is...just an offer if you want some help with it.

My training has been making a swatch. I think I need to adjust hook size so I'm swatching again today. I also changed the color of my project to papaya SS (an apricot color) instead of blue. WM has 12 oz skeins of SS for 3.77! So my bolero will cost less than $10 lol!

Chris I love your buttons! They are so nice.

I have a guage question. The bolero I'm doing calls for a F hook with chenille yarn but since I'm using Caron SS, to get guage I had to go all the way up to an I hook! Has anyone ever had to go that far before for guage? I tried using double strand to get a lower hook size but the material was thick & kind of tough feeling...I didn't like it at all. Do you think it's ok to use an I hook with one strand? I'm using this pattern for the LA Blue Shrug

We interrupt this regularly scheduled programming to bring you news of a potential upset in the Crochet Olympics. Today Patty, the Desert Crocheter, suffered the twin setbacks of realizing she didn't have enough Kool Aid to dye her yarn, followed closely by a dyeing disaster. The plastic wrap split and dye was spilt all over the sink. Patty's quick thinking saved much of the dye, but in the process, her yarn may not have received all the dye it needed in order to be the proper color for her felted tote project. In addition, her hands were immersed in the bath and are now a vibrant grape color.

Does this incident foretell doom for this member of Team Other? Stay tuned!

(P.S. I'm not sure I like the moniker Team Other. Team Miscellaneous would be just as bad, though. Team Eccentric? Team Hodge Podge?)

I hit my LYS for their Superbowl Yarn Sale (40% off). I dropped my dh & kids off at the fastfood/play place for lunch. I got to the store 10 minutes before the doors opened and found 40 people in front of me waiting to get in. After agreeing to the rules (treat yarn & staff with respect at all times!) we were given a shopping bag and allowed to enter. In search of line for my Drops Design sweater, I went straight for the Brown SHeep Cotton FLeece (bottom 2 bins under the sock yarn). I knelt on the floor and dug through the bins... what color could I find with 7 same-dye lot skeins... New Age teal 5 of one dye lot and 1 of another... a royal blue.... Victorian Pink.... I finally decided on 'Banana' a pale yellow. This whole time sock yarn has been falling on my head, so I raise my attention a bit higher and come out with 3 skeins of Swizzle sock yarn, 2 skeins of light purple (special request from my dd), 4 skeins of light gray, a lone cool multi (maroon, grey, black, gold) and another lone charcoal gray to mix with it. I worked my way around the store to the Cascade 220 and respectfully dug through the bins to find 8 skeins of a dark teal for a sweater for dh. Finally at the checkout I grabbed Addi turbo B and C hooks and made it out the door in just over an hour.
Here's the Yarn Loot (http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/sbflyinghook/detail?.dir=/953c&.dnm=48bbre2.jpg&.src=ph). Now I can play with a gauge swatch and I want to finish my socks from my Yahoo CAL sock-a-long....

Ok, I just added another 15 yarn-letes! And MamaHooks sent me a new banner and an updated version of the old one - so I put the new one at the top and the newer version of the old one at the bottom. I :manyheart how cute the new one is!

I also made all the text bold - good suggestion. However, I was showing the site to my fiance tonight and he uses IE. Ick. The site doesn't look so good in IE. Bleh - one more reason to hate IE. So, everybody switch to Firefox! :lol (it's a really great browser!) I'll have to fiddle with the design while viewing it in IE and Firefox sometime this week. See if I can get the two to converge towards something presentable in both. :blush

As far as Olympic Training, I started winding my yarn into cakes and doing a swatch tonight. My fiance asked if swatching was like stretching - I said exactly! :devil I'm off to post a photo of the pattern and my swatch on my crochet blog.

Am I the only person who really LOVES to start new projects, especially before old ones are done? :hook

I do it all the time! I need to work on finishing things up.

I hit my LYS for their Superbowl Yarn Sale (40% off). In search of line for my Drops Design sweater, I went straight for the Brown SHeep Cotton FLeece.... I finally decided on 'Banana' a pale yellow...3 skeins of Swizzle sock yarn, 2 skeins of light purple (special request from my dd), 4 skeins of light gray, a lone cool multi (maroon, grey, black, gold) and another lone charcoal gray to mix with it. I worked my way around the store to the Cascade 220 and respectfully dug through the bins to find 8 skeins of a dark teal for a sweater for dh. Finally at the checkout I grabbed Addi turbo B and C hooks and made it out the door in just over an hour.

Here's the Yarn Loot (http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/sbflyinghook/detail?.dir=/953c&.dnm=48bbre2.jpg&.src=ph)...

Great loot.:cheer I think the sweater will look wonderful in the Cotton Fleece.

OOohh, I vote for Team Eclectic!! What a great suggestion, Lisa!

Shaylen, this is the first time I've had a problem dyeing yarn, and naturally the first time I did so without wearing gloves. I suggest you go ahead and try, it's a lot of fun! Just always wear gloves! :P

I'm new to Crochetville and I'd like to join the Crochet Olympics. I've not crocheted very many items, and most of them were rectangular, so I thought I'd try my first baby sacque for the Olympics. I really don't know if that's enough of a challenge or not, so I'll add the matching bonnet and booties and go for the gold if need be!

I'm off to send my email to sign up!

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen. I have only 3 things to do to keep myself busy until the openning ceremony..

Create a banner combining the two current banners into 1
Make leg warmers for my daughter :hook
Take care of everyone around me, food, clothes, finding lost things, homework warden and ect...:faint
That last one is taking up most of the time of course. I hope to have the new combined banner for Jingles96 by tomorrow evening. I hope to finish the leg warmers by Thursday evening. I hope to get some sleep and be rested by Friday afternoon. That's a lot of hoping, and not much else. :yawn

:worried with my baby yarn... :eek I've changed my project once already, and she dutifully edited my info on the Crochet Olympics web page...

...weeeeeeeelllllllllll... I don't have until Feb 28th-ish to do the dreaded baby 'ghan that I changed to. I was talking to my sister this morning and its looking like they are going to induce her Thursday afternoon. Something about her doctor having surgery Friday.

You can breathe now, Anna. I'm not going to change catagories, I will find another baby blanket to make.

..And if y'all don't mind, send me MEGA speedy crochet vibes. I am convinced I will have this blanket ready for him when he is born and of course, I am the slowest crocheter I know.:blush

has somehow found herself in intensive training :laughroll
