I took the chance that nylon could be dyed with food colour. Plenty of people online said it could (due to the protein in the nylon) but seemed pretty uncertain.
I took some light pink, 100% nylon, ribbon yarn, and dyed it like this:

It's so shiny, and so much brighter than the same dye would be on white wool. It's also subtley variegated, although you can't really see it in the pic. I can't wait to use it (project details here on my blog (http://hookstars.blogdrive.com/archive/45.html))
