Hi Folks
I have had some requests to start up a new crochetalong with the 63 MORE pattern booklet . ( Leisure Arts #2146 )
Several of us have finished the first 63 and I think the 2nd would be lots of fun . It does look pretty challenging, but we have a dedicated and talented group out there that can do it !
I have edited this post so that it will now only contain the 63 More comments, and will be moving my other "Request " afghan to a new thread in the crochetalong section . I am asking for donations of any 7 inch sampler square to make an afghan to be donated to c-ville so they can raffle it off to raise funds to keep this community up and running .
Please check out the Crochetville Raffle Afghan thread for further details .
Thanks, and have fun ! :)

Julie,

I love this idea and I think it would be a wonderful way to support Crochetville! As soon as I find the pattern I will join the list!

I have the book and wanted to start it but might have to wait a little before i do. Too many things going on. I will send a square sounds like a good idea!

Hi Julie!

I'm confuzzled. Do you want squares from the 63 more booklet for your fund-raising 'ghan, or will any 7" square made from off-white Simply Soft do?

It sounds like a great idea, either way! Count me in.

Hi Alli
Check www.countryyarns.com (http://www.countryyarns.com) . They have it there !
Hope you join us !

Dragonfly - We'll be here for a long time, so stop in whenever you get ready !

Claire - Any 7 inch sampler square will do . If you don't want to make one from one of the booklets, any pattern you like will be fine . Glad to have you join up !

Hi Julie,

I am definitely in to supply a square for the auction afghan. What a great idea to help Crochetville! I will also participate in the CAL, but not right away. (I know you know how many UFO's I have - but I am making progress)

Thanks Julie!:)

Hi Diane and Jimmie !
It's great to see some of my old gang over here with me in this . I figured I could count on you all to jump in at some point ! Glad to have you both in the group. We'll get the second 63 done, you'll see. I hope I'm not imagining things, but the patterns in it do look quite a bit more challenging than # 1 .
We can do it, though . If we put all our heads together , we'll work it out . And I REALLY want to do a nice afghan to donate to C-ville. They have given me a LOT of hours of enjoyment !:manyheart

Hi Folks
Just a note about using other squares. There are LOTS of pattern stitches available online .
Here are a few areas to look -
http://home.inreach.com/marthac/stitches.html

http://crochet.about.com/library/weekly/aa052398.htm

http://www.obgidge.com/gg212.html

http://www.anniesattic.com/crochet/content.html?type_id=S

http://www.needlepointers.com/ShowArticles.aspx?NavID=1525

http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/directory/stitches.php

There are also small pattern booklets available at walmart - there are 3 in the set that have several patterns in each one for basic crochet stitches. Any of these would be welcome for the Village afghan -- just so you figure out the number of stitches needed to make the square 7 inches !

Thanks ~~~

ME!! Of course I want to join!!! :bounce This must be the big idea and it's a great one! How fun to have a CAL group donate squares to a single 'ghan. I think I will donate a square from the 63 more book so as to relate to the CAL. There usually are a couple favorites that I come across in the booklets and wouldn't mind making 2.

Of course, I MUST finish my granny's flower garden 'ghan. This project will offer more great incentive. I have to book already, hmmm, now to choose the yarn! :think

Thanks, Sue !
I was hoping you'd be gung-ho for this ! You did such a great job on the first 63, I thought you'd enjoy a follow -up !
Don't worry if you can't start right away. Go ahead and get your flower garden one finished first , then you can come in here when you're ready .
Now you get to make another YARN JOURNEY !!!
I decided to make mine in the same color we're doing the donated one in -- all in off white , so I just bought out all they had at the store ~I thought the patterns seemed to show up so nicely in the one on the cover !

That would look very pretty, Julie! I'm going to do the same thing when I make my 2nd 35 granny square afghan, all Caron SS in off-white. Caron SS is such a pretty yarn, I'll have to see what colors the stores have when I start picking colors. :)

Hello Fellow Village People ,

I am writing to ask for a few ( or many ) brave people to join me on a new adventure in crochet .

I am asking for a donated square from each person ,to be mailed to me . I will join all the squares together and mail it on to the people in charge of donations at C-ville. They will raffle it off at their Fall auction to help raise money to keep this wonderful place up and running .

------
Hi Julie - I've been wanting to get the second book and do this for a while, and this seems like a good opportunity. When I first started to crochet again after a 30 year hiatus, I picked up the 63 square book to help myself relearn to crochet, and I use it all the time for other projects.

If you still have room, count me in!

Hi Coralie
Thank you very much for the offer ! I don't know if you read all the details, so i'll go through them again quickly. I am asking for any 7 inch sampler square --- if you want to do one from one of the "63" books you can, but if not, it's ok to choose any other pattern you like . I am asking that it be done in Caron SS off white , and that you also send a postcard from the area you are from , with your c-ville name, name of the square you made and some little thing you'd like to write about c-ville .
I am planning on making an album with all the postcards from all over and it will go with the raffled afghan . I am REALLY excited about it ! I think it's gonna be neat to see where all we get squares from .
If you have any more questions, let me know ,and drop me a pm or em when you're ready to send it . I'll give you my address then .

I was wondering how much yarn is needed for this? Since I'm waiting for my book to be delivered, I thought I'd go to my LYS "just to look." I rarely drive to work, and since I have my car today...

I'm not even thinking about the 15 skeins of the big RH Super Savers in my car trunk - those don't count, because they're for other projects!

And since I need to pick up some SS Off white for my square for the ghan to be auctioned, I figure it couldn't hurt to start thinking about the yarn for this project, too, right? ;)

--------------
Well, I did stop by Hobby Lobby last night, just to look (and get a skein of SS off white - they had 1 left, and I scooped it up!).

I want to do this in SS, and I was debating the color. While at HL, I picked up some SS Brites Grape (they had 2 6oz skeins on clearance for $1.24 ea), and I have to say, I'm really liking that color. I think it would look fantastic with SS Black as a contrasting color (I got the idea also from a lady who's doing a ripple CAL in SS Grape and Blue Mint with Black and White as CCs). In fact, I may end up stealing that color scheme since I have a bunch of SS Brites Blue Mint that I bought because it was too beautiful not to buy.

But, having said that, I'm absolutely in love with SS Brites Papaya. I just made a baby blanket out of it, and my eyes can't get enough of that color, so I may end up doing the 63 more all in that color.

Unfortunately, the Hobby Lobby near me is only selling the 3oz skeins of SS, not the 6oz skeins, and the Michael's near me doesn't have much of a yarn selection, so I may end up ordering whichever yarn I decide on.

I guess the short answer is no, I haven't decided yet. :)

But, I did make a 7 inch square last night, and I can get it in the mail to you tomorrow or Friday.

JulieKay
February 8th, 2006, 12:39 PM
Hi Renee
Yep, i know which ripple you are talking about. that one really is stunning looking isn't it ? I think the 63 more might have an interesting look if someone did use all the ss brights, rather than something plain . it might make for a very beautiful colorful blanket. what would the papaya and the blue mint look like together, with black as edging , good or bad ?
I think the SS is certainly going to make a soft lovely afghan for our raffle. i am really excited about it !
I plan on taking photos of each square as I get them and putting a link in here so everyone can see each other's work and which square each person chooses .

Julie, I did holp up the grape to the papaya, and didn't like that combination. But I think Papaya and Blue Mint looks great together, and Blue Mint and Grape look great together. I'm sure you can see my dilemma: those SS Brites have some amazing colors, and it's hard to chose.

My HL doesn't have some of the colors in the line (like Watermelon), more reason for me to order online...

------------
I have some left over from the baby blanket I made, and I can't help myself: I keep picking it up to look at it. But it's such a rich, saturated color, I'm not sure it would be good by itself in a larger afghan. It's like a really rich chocolate: only a little satisfies.

Julie, I PMd you for an address to send my square. I chose a square from Priscilla's Crochet site called Spring Breeze (it's at http://members.aol.com/cillcrochets/springsq.html). I had trouble getting the gauge right (I need a hook somewhere between H and I!), so I left off the last round of sc. It came out pretty, and I think I'm going to use that square again for other projects - very simple to make.

I thought this might help. I saw the 12 oz. skeins of SS in Brites in Walmart (I think they're $3.77 or something like that). I don't know if it's just a regional sale but I guess it's worth looking if you want to use that yarn for the afghan.

Have a good day everybody!

Wow, I think I'm going to have to make a trip to Walmart. There isn't one that's too convenient, but still worthwhile checking out.

I also did some checking around online, and it looks like http://www.knitting-warehouse.com/ has the best prices for the 6oz skeins ($1.89/sk). Since they have a flat shipping rate of $6, if I buy enough (hehe), I'll really save some money.

Hello Gang
To start this off, I must say that this is not crochet-related, but LIFE related. I just told a little story over at the flower garden CAL which reminded me of a story I'd like to tell here .
About 25 years ago, I went shopping. Came home and my husband comes running out the door to meet me at the car . Strange, because he had NEVER done that before . Well, I walk in the house and what do I smell, but something that had recently been on FIRE .
SO ... I said - WHAT HAPPENED ?????
This is his version .( Long before we had a microwave) , he was making popcorn in a pan on the stove . He carried the PAN into the living room when done . WHERE HE WAS GOING TO SET IT IS BEYOND ME . In his LAP ?????
Anyhow, he touched the side of the hot pan with his finger, dropped the pan ON THE COUCH , and literally melted a hole the size of his head into the couch cushion . Now, I know some of you are thinking he must have a pretty small head ( peabrain ) for doing this to start with, but he's actually pretty daggone smart. Just don't tell HIM I said that .
I was SO MAD AT HIM for burning a hole into my couch that I chewed his rear out BIG TIME .
So, being young and not having much money, we flipped the couch cushion over and the incident was forgotten .
THE NEXT WEEK was Christmas week . I decided to do some decorating and put some Christmas lights up around our windows to make the house look festive . So, I was putting the lights around the inside of the window, since we'd had some neighbor boys busting up people's decorations outside .
I had part of the string up and plugged them in to see how they looked . Went outside .
Came back in to a BURNING smell .
The christmas bulbs yet on the string that weren't around the window were draped onto the couch. They had burnt dozens of holes into the SAME CUSHION my husband burnt the last week , just on the remaining "good " side .

MORAL OF THE STORY : You get paid back in life for the things you do and say to others . What goes around , comes around .
So the next time your husband does something that literally makes you want to scream, think about this little story . LIFE pays you back .

Did HE yell at ME for burning up the only GOOD side of the cushion we had ?
NOPE.
But he laughed his rear off about it !!!!!!:lol :D :lol

Oh MY!! :rofl My kids think I'm spending too much time with this computer because I'm sitting here crying because I'm laughing so hard! After you write your poetry book, you'll have to write your 'Julie's Wit & Wisdom' book. I'm sure it'd sell like hotcakes.

Your story reminds me of another story that should be a lesson to be careful what you say and do because it'll come back around and bite you right in the behind!

When my husband and I lived in our last house and I still thought gardening was something that ladies did to show off their domestic skills, I was digging around in the backyard flowers with one of those big-as-a-shovel fork things. My husband came running out and told me to be careful of the sprinkler system, it's only make out of pvc pipe. To which I responded with a very dramatic eye rolling and said, I'm not stupid!

Well, the very next moring, there was a hole about 2 inches round in the flowerbed and mud all over the patio. Can you guess where I'm going with this? We both go outside to investigate and while looking down the hole we see a length of pvc pipe with a perfectly triangular hole in it. Apparently, the sprinkler went off over night and the fountain of water blew a hole in the dirt and flung it all over the patio. This all happened, of course, as a result of my poking a hole in the pipe with that fork thing.

Upon realization of my oopsie-doodle, I covered my mouth and started backing away from the hole and my husband who's still looking down it! Luckily, he thought my reaction was hilarious and didn't chew me out! He fixed the pipe happily cuz he was soooo right! That was fine with me.

The moral of my story: Hire gardeners, it's the best money you'll spend every month. :D

JulieKay

Pretty funny, Sue !
If it would have been ME, I probably would have tried putting the blame on faulty pipes or a bad rainstorm during the night or something !
I'd try to bullcrap my way out of it somehow !!

I'm glad I'm all alone up here on the computer most times. I sit up here laughing at some of the posts like a lunatic ~~~

Who thought a gang of crocheters could be more fun than a barrel of monkeys ?

There was absolutely no way to weasle out of the sprinkler/fork thing incident. That tiny little hole had my name written all over it! Hubster and I still laugh about it cuz it really was pretty funny. :lol

I have to sit at the kitchen counter to do all my computer stuff so I'm all out in the open. Every other desk in the house is taken up by my husbands's and son's 12 tons of computer machinery. My daughter and I have to be satisfied with itty bitty laptops. It must be a guy thing. :think

Well since we're on a "I can't believe I did that" thread here ...

Up until a few years ago, the only thing I've been able to do with regard to sewing is hem pants. My Mom taught me because she was sick of forever having to shorten my jeans. I've always thought that my bed was a great place to sew so I'd sit in bed and as I'd take the pins out I'd use the mattress as a giant pin cushion.

One day my boyfriend at the time asked me to hem his jeans. Hoping to impress him with my domestic abilities of course I agreed. I gathered up his jeans, my sewing basket and marched off to our bedroom. There I sat for a good 20 or 30 minutes sewing away. Eventually he came into the bedroom to check on the progress of his jeans. He took one look at me and said, "What in the WORLD are you doing?" I'm like, "Duh, hemming your jeans."

To which he responded, "Why are you sticking pins in my WATERBED?"

Please help!

Okay, I need some pointers here, being new to crocheting with yarn (for the past 10+ years I've almost exclusively done thread crochet-- just recently branching out to yarn!) I hope this is the proper place to post these questions. I thought I would try here since my questions are directly related to this project-- if I'm wrong, please move to correct place!

The square for the charity 'ghan is supposed to be 7 inches square, yes? And that is BEFORE the sc edging is added, correct? And I'm supposed to add the sc edging, right? Or not? :think

Also, I am having a hard time getting my gauge right. I have gone up 2 hook sizes and crocheted VERRRRRRYYYY loosely. I can get the chain to 7 inches, but then when I measure again after doing a couple rows of the pattern, its down to 6 1/2 inches or less. What am I doing wrong? :bang

I feel like such a dork asking these things after I've been crocheting so long... :blushbut I never worried much about gauge and stuff working with thread.

Dear Susan and Evelyn ,
Thanks for the offer of your squares ! Let me know when you need my mailing address !

and Turtle-
Don't feel bad asking questions, it's fine ! That's what we're here for ! Some of the squares in the first afghan did tend to turn out smaller than the others , depending on the patterns. I haven't started this one yet, but am sure it'll be the same way . Yes, I'd like the square to be as close to 7 inches as possible, (before edging ) but if you can get it to 6 1/2 , that's fine ! Then go ahead and put your edging on it if you don't mind . I'll be able to work with the squares to get them all to fit . I'm sure I'll get some that are a little too large and maybe some a little too small, so I'm just hoping that I can either add some edging on some to make them fit , or something . The ones too small will be easier to make fit than the ones too big .
Drop in again if you have any more questions !

I guess one good thing about being single is I don't have to fight for space in my home (and no one to yell at me to pick up my clothes from the floor, either, hehe).

Last night I played around with different color combinations, and for this new ghan, I think I'm going to go bright and colorful. I'm going to use 3 colors: SS Brites Grape, Papaya and Blue Mint. The Blue Mint for some reason ties the Grape and Papaya together well. I'm also going to use black for a CC for the edgings. I should probably mention I love lots of bright colors: not to wear, interestingly, but in decorating (I'm into modern art, abstracts with lots of color).

To randomize the blocks/colors, I'm going to pull numbers out of a hat and work 1/3 of the blocks in each of these colors. By pulling numbers out of a hat, I should guarantee I don't duplicate a square.

When I eventually assemble it (if I do, my sister has actually volunteered to assemble it for me if I send her the squares), I'll separate the blocks by color in a bag, and randomly draw out of a bag. When I made the originial 63 squares about 5.5 years ago (I did it to relearn how to crochet), instead of assembling according to their chart, I randomized the assembly.

Now, I just need to wait for my book to arrive, and go to Walmart to see if they have the 12oz skeins! If not, I'll be ordering online.

Julie, I didn't put a sc edging on my square because it was making it bigger than 7 (although the entire last round of the square is a combination of sc, hd, and dc, with 5 stitches in each corner). It's at 7' right now - if you want, I'll take it home and put an edging on it tonight, or I can just stick it in the mail to you today. Either way is okay by me.

Hi Everyone, I just wanted to check in.

Julie, my husband and I had a real chuckle about your couch story too. Funny, though in our house I AM the general nagger and complainer, my husband gets more upset about breaking things. However, he was a pretty good sport when I cracked the closed garage door with our car last year - so I tried to be (and was successful, actually) nice when he bashed our new truck into a concrete barrier last week. It pays to be patient - because stuff does boomerang.

I also wanted to let you know that I ordered the book. It is shipped, but not here yet. I sort of want to make a square out of the new "63 More" book when I get it. Is there a time frame when squares must be in? Thanks!

Hey Mare
Thanks for your kind words. I'm no different than anybody else. I just like to "study " people and the things that happen and comtemplate WHY they happen like they do . It's a pretty interesting hobby actually, and you learn a lot by doing it . It's also FUN !

Hey Diane,
Glad you and your hubster got a chuckle about our couch cushion fiasco. I guess most married couples have a story like that somewhere in their past . It's just interesting to see how it is dealt with in each case . That is good of you to try and be more kind and considerate . I wish I could be like that , but we like picking at each other all the time about stuff . ( not to be mean, just goofing off. )
I also have lots of nicknames for him, like the other day he called Me a Dream Boat ( told you guys he was Helen Keller's Grandson ) .
I called him a Little Dingy . ( You know , the boat ? )
Anyhow, he came back and asked me what exactly was I referring to when I called him that ?

My favorite nickname for him is either Underpants or Muscle-pants . I thought the last one was pretty funny til my grown son told all his co-workers that's what I call his dad. He happens to work in a public place that I frequent often . Once I found out that they were all laughing their rears off when I came in ( because they kept thinking of my husband , muscle -pants... I kinda stopped going in there as often now !!! )

Anyhow, back to the reason we're all here - SQUARES .
I don't have an immediate dedline. I'm kinda slowly gathering squares for it at this point because the next raffle is spring ,and we all know I won't get all the squares and get them together that quickly, so at this point I am telling everyone to send them as soon as they get them done .
When you have yours ready and need my address, holler .

Woo-Hoo!:cheer I finally got this square figured out!

I saw that the pattern was a multiple of 6 + 3 ch, so what I ended up doing was increase it, since no matter how loosely I crocheted I wasn't getting what I needed. Instead of 4 X 6= 24 + 3 = 27, I did 5 X 6= 30 + 3= 33, messed around a little more with hook size and tension and VOILA! It came out to 7 inches! YEOW! Go ME!

(I realize this is probably a no-brainer for most everyone here, but this was a learning experience for me...) :hook

Now I just gotta finish it!
Wanted to give an update and say thanks :manyheart for the pointers and clarification, Julie!!!

Can I join, even if I am not doing a "true" 63 square ghan. I wanted to showcase my new knitting skills and "older" crocheting skills, so I am doing a 20-25 square ghan, using the 63 more book and the knitting 60 book. I am making them all about 12" and am using RH Aran Fleck and maybe a burgundy or dark blue for the edging. I am alternating between a knitted square and a crocheted square. Don't know when I'll finish, but sometime this year, as I am using the squares as filler projects, when I need something more brainless.

I would like to do a 7" square even if I can't join the CAL. I already have the yarn. Will let you know when I have it finished.

Hey Julie! I got the two squares done for you. There's a pic of each posted here, (http://goodyarns.blogspot.com/2006/02/stash-busting-in-progress.html) just skip the first pink square and scroll down to the next two squares.

I made # 19 - Circle in a Square from the 63 Squares book and # 28 - Sweet Pea from the 63 More Squares book. I didn't make # 21, the purty flower, as originally planned since another person expressed interest in making this square, so I switched.

Also, I was going to make square # 16 - Open Fans from the 63 More book but after multiple froggings had to switch to # 28. # 16 does NOT want to be 7 inches no matter what hook you use! It kept coming out way to wide. I'm calling this square, Wide Open Fans. Just a heads up for the Menagerie.

I'm intending to mail them to you today but, I need to squeeze in a trip to the store between all the other nonsense going on around here today.

While making the two squares for the auction 'ghan, I was promptly reminded about the edging business!! It all came rushing back to me - trying to get exactly 25 stitches up the sides of some of those squares, well let's just say I had to pull out more than one side to get them spaced evenly! :eek

Sue- Lazy is the LAST word I'd use to describe you ! Do you guys have like county fairs out there, or is that a Hicksville Thing ? I don't know if they have them all over. We have a county fair in Sept and they always have lots of entries for crocheted and knitted items. My husband tells me every year to enter, but I never have . I like looking at everyone else's stuff, though and trying to analyze how they judge things. Sometimes they give Best of Show for things that I don't think are as good as others .
I also think color has a lot to do with it. Certain colors always seem to win more prizes than others .:think

Hello Ladies
I have created an area in Yahoo photos where I will be placing photos of each square I receive . I also plan on putting all the postcards I get into an album which will go along with the afghan to be raffled . As I receive your square, I'll put it in this online photo album .The afghan will be shown in it's progression that way. You'll see each square as it arrives here then will get to see photos of it finished, along with photos of the postcard pages .
I have already had a few ladies say they are working on / or have finished their donation squares . Anytime you have yours ready, em or pm me and I'll send you my address .
** Note to anyone new reading this : You don't HAVE to join the crochetalong to be a part of the donators for squares . I am accepting 7 inch squares ( Caron SS off white ) from anyone who wants to help out on this to make a small donation to help C-ville with expenses .
Thanks in advance !:)

Julie, you have no idea! :devil

I'd have to ask some of my blue ribbon winner friends more about the fair but I'm guessing they entered something in the local Santa Clara County fair. Much of CA outside of the urban sprawl is pretty rural and farm-y and there are plenty of cow, chickens, hogs and whatnot at the fair. The exhibition hall holds all the contests for crafts but the few times I've been many years ago, I didn't see all the entries.

It would be interesting to know if anyone at Crochetville ever entered any fairs. I'm sure somebody has. I think I read once that some one had won a ribbon for a doily.

Julie Kay- I got the yarn. I love this stuff I sure wish I could get it here. But thats stickville for ya. I will try to get the 12 donr tomorrow and ship next week. I have to find a place that sells post cards! After the olympics I will get back to this but for now I have to put it on the back burner. I need to do 250 sq before the end of the olympics!!!

Sue - Yea, I remember seeing posts that some of the ladies had entered things in the fair but don't remember who it was or what they entered .

Glad you got the yarn ok. I thought I lived in the sticks, but you must be even more in the sticks if they don't have SS . Do you have any walmarts close ? They usually have it in ours around here .
Will let you know when the square arrives. You'll have the same trouble i had trying to find a post card of your area ! Not much to brag about in our little berg .

Hello group,
Well, I decided to get a little start on this afghan so I did the first 2 squares . I guess I'll give you all a heads up on this as I see it so far. I think the squares will be more challenging in this one, so get ready !
1- I had to redo number one 3 times before getting it close to the right size . I used an H hook for it and it still turned out a little small, but with this yarn being thin, I really don't want to go up to an I if I don't have to. I think it'd make my square too flimsy . The pattern was very simple, just getting the right gauge was hard .
Then on number 2 - I used a G hook. It is turning out a little over 7 inches with that , but not too much over. I DO believe this one will need hook changes depending on the square you are doing .

I just thought it might help if I put little notes in about the squares . Also , on number 2, make sure your starting chain is very loose , or the square tends to bow out on the sides .

That's all for now, I'm hitting the sack. Will check in with more square updates as I make them .

Absolutely chain loosely on #2! I've also finished the first two, and while I haven't had to change hooks, #2 did give me a little trouble!

Another tip for this one -

You are kinda working on 2 levels with this square. Don't worry about row 2, that's the easy one .
Worry about row 3 .
You are actually working to start with into the current row ( the row you always work in when crocheting ) , so when it says sc in first 4, do just that .
THEN when it says to work into the stitch 2 rows below, do that . THEN where it was tripping ME up was when it says sk next 5 sc's .. I was counting 5 from the top row ( your current row ) . Don't skip THOSE 5, skip 5 from the row 2 rows below .

Is this as clear as mud ? I am trying to explain as I go along this time , since when people ask me questions now about the first 63 and how to do a certain square, I get REALLY mixed up because it seems so long ago since I did it, I can't remember many of the squares enough to be of much help. This way, if I give little tips along the way, it'll be easier .

This square actually is gonna be BEAUTIFUL ... Once it's done and you come down off your Valium enough to focus on it .:blink

Hi Everyone,

These tips are GREAT. Thank Julie. I will not be starting this one immediately, but I did get my book and will be doing my off-white square for the auction soon. But - was I surprised when I visited a JoAnn's and found that all the Off-white Caron's SS was gone. I might have enough in my stash to do it, otherwise, I will have to tour all local yarn places, which could be dangerous. Happy Sunday!

Hey Diane,
I know what you mean about the off white SS. I bought all they had when I first decided to use this color, then thought it'd be enough, but after thinking about it I realized that it wouldn't be, since I need to also make my auction squares and sew the entire second one together and edge it . I found them in 7 oz skeins, which was a different amount to me, I had only seen them before in 6 oz ( must be trying to compete with the 7 oz Red Hearts ?)
They now also have SS in 12 oz skeins, but I haven't seen it in very many different colors yet .
I'll be waiting for you and anybody else out there to join me in here soon !
( To share in the THRILL OF SUCCESS and the AGONY OF DEFEAT )

Thanks so much for the tips! I've got my book out and I'm taking notes!! I won't be able to start this 'ghan 'til I finish the Grandmother's Flower Garden but I've made huge progress this weekend and hope to be done with it really soon!

I tried to make square 16 to donate to the auction 'ghan BUT that one was coming out way too wide!! That one will be tricky to get right. Finally I bailed on that one and made # 28, much easier! There will be a few easier squares but on the whole it looks like this 'ghan will be "The 63 Humdinger Squares Combine To Make An Heirloom Afghan"! :lol

I am not going in order, but have finished these 2 squares and they are very easy. I did have a little bit of a problem getting the right size with the SS on square 14, but it did come out okay. Square 20 was just really simple, not at all what I thought it was from the picture though. Julie, square 14 is for the auction ghan, will send it next week sometime.

Hi Julie...

Liemen is a small town next door to Heidelberg in Germany...Vashon Island is in Washington State in the Puget Sound...I'll be going home to Vashon Island for a month in April...both places are beautiful...I'm very fortunate to call both places home...my husband is a private contractor with the military, which is why we are in Germany...some day we'll go home to Vashon permanently...

We get to choose colors? Man I'm such a novice with this...I mean I've done CAL's before, but not like this...are you still collecting for the auction?

I like the idea of possibly doing an off white (like on the cover of the booklet...) but at the same time, a lovely burgandy would be great (I'm on such a burgandy kick lately...)

Or a light blue...

Yep, you get to choose whatever colors you want for your afghan . Burgundy sounds like a neat color .. I don't remember anyone using it before for the other 63 .
I am still collecting for the auction , and probably will be for quite some time yet .
The only color I am asking for for that one is Caron SS in off white ,so the squares will all be matching . You can use any sampler square pattern you want to use for it, just so it's 7 inch .

Hi all, I started on this Friday night, and over the course of the weekend, I completed 7 squares. I'm doing them in random order: I'm going to do 21 in each color I've chosen (SS Brites Blue Mint, Grape and Papaya), edging each square (and the entire afghan) in black.

To randomize (since I'm doing the blue squares first), I put 63 numbers into a baggie, and I'll be pulling at random from there. My rule to myself is I can't shy away from a square at all - once I pull the number, I have to work it. I was tempted last night to put 2 numbers back, but I didn't.

I don't have the numbers/names down, but I completed #2, #6, #16, #28, #29, #53 and #5.

For all of these, I used a G hook, and so far everything is right where it needs to be size-wise (I almost always have to use a hook one size smaller for gauge).

So far, I've found them all fairly simple to do, although the Padded Single Crochet took me a little while to figure out (I couldn't really tell from the drawing).

The first square I did was Open Fans - I didn't have the problem with it going too wide, like some others did. I liked Sweet Pea - very easy and quick to work up.

I didn't like working the Padded SC - but then again, I'm not a fan of SC (but I will say this, I love the texture of the Padded SC). And what number did I draw after that one? The Leaf Stitch, also all SCs.

So far, they're turning out really pretty. I probably won't be able to work on any more squares this week, because I promised a lady on the Feline Diabetes MB I'd make her kitty an afghan this week, so I'm going to start on that tonight.

The thought of making 21 of each square makes me want to hyperventilate! :lol

As for the FD: my 12 year old orange tabby Sam was diagnosed in November (in June, he weighed in at 21 pounds, in Nov he was 13 pounds, which is underweight for his size, and a huge weight loss). I haven't been able to get him regulated yet (a month ago, I switched him to a new insulin, and we're starting to get some good results from it). The FDMB has been a great source of help/information/support. Oh, and there's yarn addicts over there, too.

It's funny: after I made the 1st 63 squares afghan (it took me about a year to complete because I kept getting distracted with other things), I swore I wouldn't make another afghan with any squares (except kitty ghans). It's the stitching the squares together I don't like. My sister suggested I crochet them together using slip stitch, so I think I'm going to do that with this one.

Thanks, Sue. He's doing fairly well, and has gained weight since he's been on insulin, and is getting a nice layer of fat (makes it harder for me to give him his shot!). I also switched his diet (which means the other 4 kitties eat what he eats) to Wellness canned - let me tell you, at $1.09/can, 2 cans a day, those cats are eating better than I am! But they're the loves of my life... :manyheart

Oh my! 5 kitties eating pricey cat food!! I can relate. When we had our Orange tabby, he needed a special diet too. Well, your kitties are probably better off. I have had health issues with a couple cats because of their food but that's a whole 'nother topic!!

I'd love to have more kitties and lately have been pining to visit the humane society but MUST STOP MYSELF!! Whenever we have more than one kitty the shenanigans start. We just got new carpeting so no new kitties. One cat and one dog and all their special treatment is enough for now. :lol We'll just spoil and love the ones we've got. :)

Hi all. Just found this pattern at my last visit to my LYS! I'm so excited. I have the pattern for the first afghan, but never attempted it. I'm not really sure why, but anyway, I have started this one. I have squares #1,2,4,5 & 8 done so far. I am using Mainstays yarn in olive twist, and I think off white. I only bought 7 skeins of the green thinking I had enough (duh, no where near enough!) so I think I'll go back to Walmart and get a contrasting color like off white. I will post pictures of my finished squares soon.

One little thing about the picture for #59: it doesn't show the last 2 rounds, which was a little irritating (I wanted to look more closely at it to double check stitches and couldn't). Also, with #59, it helps to make the foundation chains very loose, because you'll be working a puff stitch in each foundation. #14 was straightforward and pretty quick.

What a lovely square, Renee! I'll have to add that link to my favorites. Thanks for the heads-up on the squares for the 63 more.:)

Good luck on your exam, Celeste!:cheer

Even though I haven't quite finished my Grandmother's Flower Garden, I'm going to make some of these squares today to break up the tedium of the hexes! Like the end of any 'ghan, it's getting to me!! I need to have something else to do so I can switch between projects! :D

Hey Renee,
Sounds like you're still on a roll, and welcome to the gang, Sue !
I know all those hexes can get to you after awhile, can't they ?
It'll be nice to come in here for some variety ! Plenty of new stitches to try out !
Will jump back in here later on. Time to get Cam some lunch and read some stories then hopefully take a little nap . He might not need one ,but I do ! :lol

No you haven't asked me, and I think I might go ahead and do it in the off white like it shows. not sure yet, I will make up my mind when I start looking at all the yarn:D

Have fun yarn shopping ,Sissie ! Hope you find what you're searching for !

I think there are several who are doing it in the off white. I am and I think Sue, and can't remember if anyone else said they were using it . It makes the stitches show up nicely in that color . :)

This one was much easier than the photo looked, although mine didn't turn out looking quite the same as the one in the photo . I didn't have to change hook size or number of stitches. this one turned out exactly the right size .

Good morning ladies! :sun It's official! I've started the 63M 'ghan! Yesterday I made square 1. 1 down, 62 more to go! :lol

I need to divide my time between finishing the Grandmother's Flower Garden and the 63M, not to mention the bag I'm making for the Crochet Olympics. :hook So it's one square here, 10 hexes for GFG and rows of bag in the evenings. That sounds about right. :D

As long as there's figure skating on the Olympics, I'll be doing more watching and less crocheting. ;)

Last night, I drew #25 out of the baggie. The Honeycomb stitch. Looking at it, I knew it would be trouble, in that it alternates rows of sc with a series of 8 cluster stitches that alternate on each row. It looks nice, and admittedly has a cool texture, but very difficult on the hands to work (and slow to work, too).

I finally stopped at 10ish, and it measured 5 inches. I'll finish it up tonight and hope that I draw something a little easier on my hands next (I have carpal tunnel in both hands, esp. my left, and I was feeling it last night).

The good news is that another cold front is headed our way, and we're expected to have highs this weekend in the low 50s with rain and drizzle. :yay That should give me some good quality crochet time.

Good job! I like 7 inch squares: they mostly work up pretty fast.

I've been tempted to do the Grandmothers Flower ghan, but all those little patches makes me go a little buggy just thinking about it.

Morning ,ladies
Looks like the boards are coming to life again today ! Glad to see you joined us, Sue , and it sounds like your crochet basket is full between all 3 of your projects. You'll be able to budget your time well between them all though and get each of them done I'm sure !

Renee, That honeycomb one sounds pretty tricky ! I am ready to start on 8, I can't remember the name, but it had pretty long directions, so I thought I'd lay off it til my grandson goes home. It looks like it's gonna take some concentration ! :think

I don't want to miss any of the figure skating either! :)

I've been having problems with my hands too and have to give them a break once in awhile. Too much crocheting and too much scrolling with the mouse is not good for the hands. Did I mention that this ageing thing is for the birds?

Thanks for the info on # 25! :)

Julie, it's quite easy once you get the pattern down (which is pretty quick to do). It just takes forever to do. But the finished texture is all knobby and feels pretty cool.

Boy, isn't that the truth, Sue! ;)

Let's say I should purchase stock in Tylenol, since I take a lot of it. But I have a good splint I wear to bed at night, and that's helped a lot.

Julie, I did sign up for photobucket, but I need to get pictures made (and then developed). One of these days, I'll get a new laptop and digital camera, and this will be a lot easier. I do have both those items listed on my wish list if anyone is interested... :lol

Thanks for the Heads Up on your wish list items ! I promise if I win the lottery, that will be on my top ten items to purchase . ( I don't buy tickets, though, so you have about a Snowball's Chance , if you get the hint ! ) :lol

We will wait patiently for you to take some photos with your camera and get them developed !

Hey Juie! Didn't get any pm from you...:( ...but I did see that you posted the pics of the squares. :) Thanks for putting up everyone's donated squares for us all to see! It'll be fun to see what everyone makes.

Renee - do you have a scanner? You can scan your squares which will give you a digital photo to upload to Photobucket. Just a thought...:)

Progress: this is one of those weeks when my crochet-diva pedestal is mighty wobbly. I started square #2 and had to frog it twice!! The first time it was too wide, the second, I ended up with too many stitches. Arg!!

The third time seems to be the charm but talk about taking forever on one square!! :P

I am checking in to say, I found Caron SS in Off White today :yay and will be working on my square for the auction. Do you need more than one, Julie? I would be happy to do a couple more for the auction.

As for the bigger afghan, I am going to try to work out of my stash and still have a ton of stuff to finish. I am getting there though.

Hey, I looked at the pictures of your squares, Julie and the squares already donated, and would love some advice on how to do the side edging so neatly. Any tips for me? Thanks all! It's good to see so many interested in this one. The square patterns are very pretty I think.

Hmmm, maybe I should add scanner to my wish list, too? ;)

I'm really not a luddite, just that computer stuff hasn't been a priority for me. Heck, I don't even have cable, which makes it really hard for me to catch my favorite shows in HGTV. But I'll be getting it this summer so that I can watch Monday Night Football, which is moving to ESPN.

Hi Jana -
We'd love to have you join us and to donate a square for the raffle-ghan if you wouldn't mind ! Any help is greatly appreciated !

Sue- Don't worry, my pedestal has been wobbly since the start, but it is starting to get a little more solid now. I had some worries that this afghan was going to be difficult ,but so far, there have only been a couple of squares that gave me trouble. The last few have been better, but I have a LONG ways to go . Sorry about the pm. I
