Hi Everyone!
I work closely with Heartmade Blessings to send comfortghans to people in need. Over the last few weeks we have had hundreds of requests (unprecedented amount in a one month period) and now are in need of thousands of 12 inch squares to get some of these ghans completed and shipped out. If you'd like to help please visit my blog to find the square guidelines and my address for shipping. Click here:

Hi everyone,
For those of you making squares for Drew that would like a little incentive please check out my blog, where I am holding a raffle for all of those who contribute squares to this very worthy cause. I'm hoping the thought of winning a big basket of yarn and assorted other goodies will help inspire some of you. Between now and Feb. 28th I'll be adding one prize each day to the basket so by the end of the month it will hopefully be worth winning. ;)
Once you've sent your square off, please PM me or leave a note on my blog. For each square you send to Drew you'll get one raffle ticket. Which reminds me, I need to post FANTASTIC PRIZE #5. A link to my blog is in my sig.

Hi Drew, I made 4 squares this weekend and I'll be mailing them at lunch today. I'm planning to make some more this coming weekend.
Update: I did mail the package, but I forgot the tag. Um, I found the card on my desk. My desk looks a bit like your studio used to look, except not quite as neat. However, my name and address are on the envelope.

I am too lazy to make squares myself. No, actually, I am taking five classes and working full-time. I wish I had time to crochet....

Drew, are combination knit/crochet squares okay to send?
I'm playing around with my knitting needles with some dishcloth patterns (in acrylic yarn) and they're ending up nice, but I don't really have a use for them. I can edge the 8 1/2 inch knitted square to 12 inches with a crocheted border if this is acceptable.

That sounds fantastic!! I'd love to see some like that!!!
Whenever I am practicing stitch combos, experimenting etc, I use the 4 ply acrylic and shoot for a 12" size so that they can eventually go into a comfortghan. It makes me feel like I'm multi-tasking, which as you may know, is a bit difficult for a dude... :blush

Do you require 4-ply yarn because of the thickness or the durability? I don't want to send you the wrong kind of thing. :)

Hey Dude. :)
I just sent you a square, but I was in such an awful hurry that I forgot to tag it. But I wrote the sender on the envelope, so maybe you can just use that?
Anyway, if there's any yarn in that square that you don't think is right, please just tell me. There's some old stuff in there, some of it is from my grandmum's stash, which could easily be 30 years old. It seemed okay, though.
I hope it's okay, because I almost finished the next one already. :lol

I've got a question. I'm not used to those big squares, and I'm not used to inches either. :lol
When I measure the corners it says 12 inches and maybe a couple of mm more. When I measure the middle it's at least one cm short of 12 inches.
But it must be the corners that count, right? Because you can't attach something that's longer than 12 inches to 12 inches. The middle isn't to rigid, it can be pulled in shape, so I think it should be okay.
I'm just wondering how important this is, because I like this square, and it would be a bummer to make more if it isn't up to the standard. So what do you think? It's not as wonky as it looks, I just didn't straighten it out properly. ;)

Ugh! I've been trying to make a 12" square for this wonderful project. I now realize why I've stuck with making back & forth afghans for years! "In the round" has been my nemesis for years :irk I can't make a 12" square to save my life! Following patterns for 12" squares - I'm ending up with a 10" x 11" - how is this happening??? Very frustrating:bang . If I up the size of hook - I got a 14" square - sort of - more like a rectangle. I'd make them back & forth, but I really want to make the great looking squares that are started with a ring. Any tips would be greatly appreciated, as I have ALOT of stash that needs busting:blush :hook .

Hi Tara,
Here is a pattern that I've been told is very easy and comes out completely square (sometimes other squares will warble or come out roundy). Check it out:

Tara: I can sure identify with the "size" thingy. Getting the granny SQUARE and 12 inches is a bit tricky for me. Now....I tend to measure the square as I go instead of when I finish it. If I am waaaaaay short I know I can add a row of double crochet (adds a bit over an inch to the size using 4 ply yarn and an H hook). If I am getting close to the size and still have a couple of rows to go for the pattern but know it will be too big, I will drop a row from the pattern, measure again and then add a SC or HDBL depending on what it is turning out to be. I have found I must crochet FUNNY 'cause the patterns I have tried from the HMB site RARELY turn out exactly the same when "I" make them :think . Oh Well, it is still good fun and a great cause.

March 13th, 2006, 10:22 AM
He, my sister crochets so much tighter than I do, that even though she made all, uh triplecrochet stitches?, and I only made doubles, her square still had a row or two more than mine whan they both measured 12 inches. :eek :eek :eek

I don't really have a problem with a granny square. Simple squares I seem to do okay with. It's the more detailed squares that are driving me insane!!!:yell Like this one http://www.heartmadeblessings.org/patterns/dreamcatcher.asp (came out 14") or this one: http://www.geocities.com/cdjsimon/cygnus.html (came out 10x11)
I like to be challenged with a pattern. Simple granny squares won't hold my attention. I recently taught myself how to knit and have found gauge is extremely important with knitting wearables. Now my gauge obsession has transferred to my crochet and I can't seem to make ANYTHING to gauge!:bang
I'm going to try the pattern Drew suggested to see if I can at least make a square that's 12". But any help with why I might be having such a hard time with the above two links would be greatly appreciated. I've been fighting this problem for years. It'd be nice to finally be able to fix this glitch I've got.

Hey guy, I sent you a couple of PM's in the past few days checking on the package.
I haven't heard back. Just wanted to know if it has arrived yet. I mailed it priority mail 7 days ago today----I am beginning to think of priority mail as just a big rip off.
Please answer if you will, I am begining to become worried about the package. You are just 2 states from me, and I am on the southern border of my state at that.
UPDATE: IT HAS ARRIVED :yay :yay
Priority mail is just as slow as regular mail----I didn't know that---now I do. It took 7 days from southern KY to Texas. That sure isn't 2 to 3 day priority mail in my book. I would like to know if there is a faster way. Do any of you know of one?
Stacy25
March 20th, 2006, 04:02 PM
Wow! I've never had a problem with Priority Mail. Sorry to hear it took so long. Maybe next time, you could try UPS? Ground takes about 5 days, but the tracking is so much better, and it's automatically insured, up to $100.

I don't usually have problems with priority mail, but a few years ago, I sent something priority, and it took about 10 days to get where it was going. I went to the PO to ask about it, and their response was that it isn't guaranteed, so no refund, nothing they can do about it.
I think Priority Mail is a good marketing campaign to get us to pay lots more for post. Now I only use it for larger packages, since that way tends to be more cost effective.
