I recently got "hooked" on the tunisian method but I can't figure out how to avoid the curl at the starting row. Here's an example - http://www.riahills.com/ballostring/
Has anyone found a soltion to this?

Thanks

Ria,

I am not an expert on Tunisian, but from what I understand, the "curl" just comes with the territory and there is nothing you can do about it. I'll be curious if anybody suggests some way to correct it.... good luck!

I just found an answer in another post in this forum. She said that you need to work a row of Tunisian purl st as the first row or alternate tunisian purl with a regular tunisian st. I'll have to try it in a few minutes! I'll update my findings ;-)

Starting off with the purl does help tremendously, but I still had a wee bit of curl. After a crocheted edging, it totally disappeared.:)

One book I read said that the curl is just a part of tunisian.

I had simple tunisian in the Bohemian Jacket I did from Hip to Crochet. It got sewed to the fronts and also had a simple edging and it looked fine. It was like a scroll as I was doing it. I did steam block it and it flattended out more.

Here's a close up:

As someone else said, working the purl stitch for the first row is a tremendous help. I have a tutorial in how to do that at my web site.

Since the purl looks a little bit different, you might want to use a purl stitch to end the piece too.

BTW, Crochet on the Double is similar to tunisian and does not curl. I made myself a cheat sheet for it though. 1) loops on, 2) slide 3) turn 4) loops off. That is for COTD not Tunisian.

another way to reduce the curl is to do your foundation chain with the next higher hook size. Also, I have had good luck with going in the back of the chain, instead of the top. There is a cool website that might help you, too : www.chezcrochet.com (http://www.chezcrochet.com)

hope this helps...

Just recently I've tried experimenting with doing the first row in Tunisian purl stitch, then continued with TSS [Tunisian Simple Stitch]. Absolutely no curl. Boy, am I happy! :cheer I only wish I had learned this years ago. :lol
