Just found out that we have a spring formal for the guys. I need a wrap pattern and some suggestions as to material to make it with. I have no idea what dress I am wearing or color. I am thinking a navy or something along those lines. And if you have any ideas for a cheap dress I am all ears. UGH! Did I mention that I HATE foramls? I mean really the men get to wear their dress blues or greens (ARMY) and we have to find all kinds of things dress.......shoes.....hair....... the whole bit! ACK! Thanks for the help ladies, Nikki

I love this shawl:

I think it would be even more elegant without the fringe.

I would love to still be able to dress up like that...lol! I have some formal dresses around that I obviously don't need...just depends on what sizes we're lookin at. Or, if nothing else I'm never below a used dress shop for something like that.

Aformal event, huh? I always wear something with spaghetti straps in a rich material like silk or satin or even chiffon. You're right about wanting a crocheted stole to wear with it. I've made a shawl out of some Moda Dea fun fur yarn together with a size 10 cotton thread and I love the drape. It's light and airy just the way I like it.

Well Em come and get all prettied up and go out with him then. LOL! There are just not any used dress shops here believe me I have looked. I really hate paying for those things and wearing them once. As for spaghetti straps I have to have something to hold the girls up and that just won't do it. so I have to have a little something with staps. I will keep looking. The idea with a fun fur kinda thing and thread sounds like it would work nicely though. Thanks, NIkki

As far a stole or wrap I have no clue. As for a dress I can totally sympathize. (My BF is a SFC and we must at least make an appearance at formal affairs. He tends to tell me about a week before the event. Hello I know you have your dress blues, but I must get gowns altered... too short!) Anyways first for the "girls" I would suggest that you make an investment in a corrset. They are expensive (50-60$), but if you are required to do several functions then it will pay off. I think the corrset is quite comfy right until you sit (no slouching allowed), the girls however stay put and never once have I worried about a peep show. Next as for a dress I am not sure where you are so I am only guessing when I suggest stores. Try Ross, Goodwill, and resale shops (although some are expensive). You could also even try department stores as they may have some sales going due to highschools having spring formals.
I have two dresses that have kept. One is red with spaghetti straps, the other black and white. They are both classic styles that I have worn to different functions for 2 years. I purchased very simple accessories from Claires (small shop in the mall) that I have kept on hand and trade around with other wives and girlfriends.
Good luck in the hunt!

I also don't know where you're located or what type of styles you're looking for... I know that places I stop when looking for cheap but fancy are Windsor - which also has an online store (http://www.windsorstore.com/category.cfm?start=37&cat=49), although I know it may be tricky to buy gowns online, but I love them cuz they carry bigger sizes, too - and even Penney's right now, since it's prom season.
I found these few that are classic and pretty flattering on most shapes, they might help give you an idea:

This is just my two cents :2c. I liked this pattern when I worked it up using baby yarn and metallic floss together. Flower Pattern (http://********************/summershawl.htm) :rose

Did you see the poncho & sarongs/shawls RachelG posted in Clothing Show & Tell? If not, check them out and see if any are what you had in mind. Black Beauty in Bloom Poncho (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=24403) The pattern is online for the Beauty in Bloom poncho, the others Rachel says don't have patterns.

I did see the ones posted and they are beautiful but not what I am looking for. I live in Ky and have a lead on a dress. I waer a 16-18 depending on the cut of the dress. Thanks for all the input ladies!

This wrap works up quickly and most any sport weight yarn will do. I didn’t edge mine with eyelash. I liked it better without this addition.

This is a classic stole pattern. I have experimented with different weights of yarn and hook sizes and it has always turned out nicely. http://www.bernat.com/pattern.php?PID=1080 (http://www.bernat.com/pattern.php?PID=1080)
This shawl is really beautiful. Take a look at the pictures of one finished by Mimicat.
