Good morning one and all -
I know I'll kick my own butt all over the street for doing this, but couldn't resist . My name is Julie and I have a Crochetalong Addiction .
There have been some people interested in doing a "quilt-inspired" afghan. There are many patterns out there to choose from. I think this would be lots of fun to see all the talent out there and see what each of you come up with to work on as far as patterns, colors, etc.
We could actually make some Blue-Ribbon Fair Winners here, ladies ! ( Or get a start on a nice Christmas gift )

^^^^^^^ And last but not least -- a big thanks to Jen for mentioning this site to me again . I totally forgot about it, but it is one of the neatest websites I've ever found. There are hundreds of quilt patterns on it -- if you had the talent, you could probably take any one of them and design a graph for a crocheted one !! ^^^^^^^^^^
Take a peak - you'll be here all day
http://www.quilterscache.com/QuiltBlocksGalore.html
That should give anyone ( unless you're Helen Keller) some temptation . Come on ladies -- This will be fun .
Have you been out there lurking for awhile, but never screwed up the courage to join a crochetalong ? Come on in .... you won't regret it .
( * Well, maybe you will -- you're gonna get so hooked on these danged things, you'll need a 12-step program to get off them )
Anyhow, ignore that last line .
ANYONE can make a granny square.
EVERYONE is welcome .
Jump in, the water's fine ! ( I DOUBLE-DOG DARE YOU ) :D

Hi and welcome to CALA
(Crochetalongs Anonymous )
That's be great if you decide to join in ! Maybe I'll also help you to feed your addiction ! :lol (If you're anything like me )
That pastel pinwheels is so pretty ! Would you make it for you or someone else ?
* By the way, can I ask what your first name is ? That makes us all sound a little bit more "chummy " . :)

What a coincidence! I am already working on the Around the World afghan. It's one of the 4 or 5 WIP's I have. I work on it casually, when I get tired of working on the Christmas gifts, and when it's finished, it's for me! The pattern is mindlessly simple, and a good portable project.

April 6, 2006, 07:34 AM
Good morning, Cindy !
Well, then ,you may as well just join us, that way you'll have someone to yak along with as you work on yours !
What colors are you using ?
I am using the SS brites with black squares between each round of colored squares . I don't know how many squares I have done -- I filled one large ziploc with them and am working on the second bag now .
Are you joining as you go, or are you gonna wait and join at the end when squares are all done ?

Stop it, stop it, STOP IT! :P Julie Kay, you're driving me crazy! ;) You come up with all these great, fantabulous ideas for CALs and I simply can't keep up with you, and I tell you, it's making me insane! I haven't even had time to start the 35 Grannies or Lace & Bobbles yet!
Seriously, you have such a wonderful drive for doing these CALs and I do think it's great. Just wish I could keep up with you. Do you crochet in your sleep? In the shower?:lol
Have fun everyone!:hug

Julie:
I wrote down what colors I'm using and how many squares of each color I need. So I crochet all of one color, then move on to the next color. When I get completely done with one color, I crochet a hexagon for another WIP I have going. This is a great project for long car trips!
Here are the colors I'm using:dark blue, claret, coral, mexicana, light sage, white/black speckled, dark sage, carrot, brown, teal, cornmeal, bright red, black, white, and a bright varigated.
JulieKay
April 6, 2006, 08:16 AM
Cindy
That is sure gonna be a pretty afghan ! Sounds like lots of pretty colors .
I should do that too, write down what I need of each color . I kinda graphed one out on graph paper, but really have no idea how big that would make it if I follow my graph . The squares I'm making are pretty small, only 2 rounds ,so it'll take a boatload of them . :lol
cdgayer
April 6, 2006, 08:29 AM
Julie-
I also graphed it out, and my squares are also 2 rounds each. It's a total of 421 squares. Working out from the center, this is the number you will need. Just substitute your colors for mine.
Bright varigated-1
white-4
black-8
bright red-12
cornmeal-16
teal-20
brown-24
carrot-28
dark sage-32
white/black speckled-36
light sage-40
mexicana-44
coral-48
claret-52
dark blue-56
It sounds like a lot, and it is, but just make them one at a time!

April 6, 2006, 08:35 AM
Hi Cindy-
Thanks -- I copied your list out and will put my colors in place then print it out and count out what I have done so far . Are you making the same pattern I am, the one in the Afghans magazine ?
How big is yours supposed to turn out using this many squares ?
Just a note -- in case we get some more posters this morning , I may be out of commission in little while. My grandson is here this morning , but still sleeping right now . Once he wakes up, I probably won't have a chance to get back on here til early this afternoon .
Just in case you all wondered where I went ~

Julie-
I have 159 squares done. I'm using the H hook and the squares are turning out to be 3 inches square. The pattern says it will be 56" square when it is finished.
It is from the afghans magazine; it's the same picture you posted earlier. This picture is what made me fork over $6.95 for a magazine. This afghan is on my "gotta make it before I die" list.

I feel like I'm :juggle juggling all these projects in my head. You are such an enabler.
But I did take a peek:ccompute at the patterns you posted :tired, and I guess I could get around to making the Nine-Patch in a year or two, if I don't go :loco first.
I can't decide :think if you are:goodorbad, Julie Kay! ;)

Cindy-
I'm with you -- I NEVER buy magazines and just happened to stumble across this one. That fuzzy fur shag thing on the front caught my attention at first, then when I opened it and saw the quilt afghan, I said who the heck CARES what it costs ? I want that pattern .
I'll have to sit and figure my squares out here today and see how many I have and how many I need of which colors. I am using ss and a G hook, so mine are probably a little smaller than yours . I havent measured them to see .
Will get back to you on it though !

Like a hole in the head!!!.......that's how badly I need to put something else on my ' to do ' list but this is there for sure, without a doublt. I've always loved the look of quilts but don't have the desire to sit and actually sew one.

My mom says I'd rather Talk than Eat ... WELL, I'd like to do BOTH , but talking is my greatest talent .
I'd like to think I could sell ice to an Eskimo . I'd sure try bullcrapping my way through it if I had the chance .
Anyhow, jump on in -- we'd love to have you . And don't wait 2 years ... do you know how many more CAL's I can start in 2 YEARS ? :lol

Well, I tend to lean toward pinks or greens if I'm doing something for myself. The colors that it is made with is very pretty too. I'll have to look around and see what really catches my eye.
I'm making the 'sitting pretty dress' right now for my niece (well, actually my cousins daughter) so if I ever get it done (:sweat ), I'll pick out my colors for this.
Great idea!

JulieK: Nooooo you did not!:2nono Start another CAL, LOL!! I would like to work on the one that you are working on eventually, I picked up that magazine some time ago, and to be honest, not sure where it ended up...lol, I had it with me when I was moving. It's still available, I've seen it at JoAnn's and some other places.
I'll jump in when I whittle my other projects down...or at least finish the baby blanket. I hope to make the blanket with cotton yarn, since it's on sale this week at JoAnns, lol!
The other patterns are awesome, btw!

Darn you Julie!!! :2nono Not another CAL! Ok stop twisting my arm already! I'm in, I'm in! I have a pretty quilt-type afghan pattern I printed off the internet months ago. I'll have to dig it out and take a look. I can't remember what it is called or where I found it, but I do remember that it was from a place that said they'd be revoking their free patterns by such-and-such date so I printed it out because I liked it so much.
But seriously, thanks for starting up such a cool CAL. I haven't found the motivation to crochet since I finished my 63-square afghan for my sister in late Feb!! More than a month without real crochet time! I must be sick?:think So thanks for the motivation.
On a side note I started my first crochet project during the Masters (golf) tournament last year and this weekend it is starting again so that must mean it's time for a new project!
JulieKay

Jen
It sounds like you DO have a sickness if you haven't crocheted in a month .
==============HEAL ===============
I have prescribed a new CAL called Crochet a Quilt .
I think that will cure your disorder .
Buy 2 skeins of yarn and call me in the morning . :lol
Look up that pattern and let us hear about it. I think it was from Solutia-- they are the website that closed down all their patterns and they had some nice quilt-type ones .

Okay Julie . my dh might not like it but I am gonna jump in only because I just bought 14 skeins of wintuk caron yarn . woodys green and sage green . I wanted to make a afghan for the living room . I am not sure what pattern of quilt to go with . I liked the flower garden we did . Dh got upset with me when I would get frustrated but it was fun. Help me out with a subjestion on which one to go with . Please ............... because its your fault I am joining . :manyheart

Julie, you are like a dealer supplying dope to the junkies! :laughroll :laughroll :laughroll
I'm still stumbling along with the 200 blocks CAL that pre-empted my Lace and Bobbles CAL that I abandoned my 35 Grannys CAL to work on! And, now you do this!
Well, let me just be very clear about something...
You will not tempt me, Julie Kay,
You will not tempt me, this I say!
You will not tempt with a pinwheel quilt,
You will not fill my head with guilt!
Log Cabins can just go away,
Save Roosters for another day!
Buying yarn is NOT a cure,
I will not do it, that's for sure!
You will not tempt me, JulieKay,
You will not...
Hey, did I see some cool deals on Webs (http://www.yarn.com/)? LittleKnits (http://www.littleknits.com/) has some awesome deals right now... gee, I do have a JoAnn's coupon and Michael's is just around the corner...

I need to thank you guys one and all for making this such an entertaining and funny morning . Today is my Dr appointment day and I'm a bigger chicken than my 3 year old grandson is about doctors ! So you have kept my mind off the fact that at 2:30 pm I will be sitting in the waiting room sweating bullets .
( * Don't worry, I don't have anything fatal -- it's just a checkup, but when I hear the word doctor I could literally go into a COMA from fear )
Now you all know what a big WOOSE I am .
Anyhow, be thinking of me at 2:30 as you are at home crocheting away, with the wind in your hair , a stiff drink in your hand, and some peaceful music like Rolling Stones on the radio .
* I can't get no, satisfaction * ... SING ALONG ....
No, never mind, that makes me sound like I'm going in for Viagra pills .
NOT TRUE .
( Maybe I should take a stiff drink before I go )

Do you like to use a hook ?

How 'bout some yarn in greens or blues ?
I do not like blue, but I know YOU do .

It's more fun with folks like you
Who are a laugh a minute and a barrel of fun , too .
So drop the 35,63 and MORE
Just throw them suckers on the floor

Hey Norma
I think maybe some shade of blue -- I'm not sure what . Maybe you could take a little snip of each of your yarns with you to look for your other color and hold them up together ?
Maybe a dark type blue, or at least like a royal blue maybe ?
Anyone else got any ideas ?

Hello ladies -
Roses and Insurechick --- can I ask what your first name is ? I always like calling people by their names, it seems more "homey" .
Yes, the prairie star would definitely qualify -- how'd I forget that one ? It is lovely !!!
Also ,can't wait to see the Drunkard's path-- it sure looks hard to do, is it ?
Dazy- you are funnier than heck -- you guys are all so much fun. I'll kick your butt if you kick mine. We're in this together now !
Rosette- keep us updated on what you decide !

Sorry I meant to put that in...my name is Shelly.
The drunkard's path is "easy" according to lion brand...and probably really is for a better crocheter. I had issues with the fact that the squares come out squatty because it's crocheted from corner to opposite corner. Once I got over that and stopped frogging the squares things got better. 64 squares is alot of squares...so I'm sick of the squares and it will take me a long time to have any desire to make another of these afghans...except that I like them :blush ...oh well. Anyway, it's all laid out on my guest bed and I really love the way I can tell it will look. Unfortunately, I'm ridiculously busy these days...so it will probably be a while before I finish it.:(

I know what I'm going to do now! I am doing a monogram quilt in green, yellow, white and pink. It will have a checkered border and the monogram will be white in a pink box. I think it should be kinda cool! I can't wait to see everyone else's too. It seems to be kinda fun!

You know what I just realized? This CAL is actually kinda devious because almost anything you could make could qualify... after all, Quilts are very diverse.

Ok Julie! Just saw this thread! I LOVE quilt afghans and have made a few of the. Right now I am working on a fan design quilt afghan for my granddaughter. Would this qualify for this CAL? Its not traditional though. The fans are multicolored in Caron brights - Watermelon, Lime, Grape, Turquoise, Rubine Red, Mango & Lemon. The main color of the square is white and is done in a shell pattern. The fans will be put together ofset each other so one will be fanning one way and the next the opposite way. If this qualifies then count me in too!

Ohhhh...I have been wanting to do a quilt ghan for a long time...so.....count me in too, I just have to decide on a pattern and colors. I have a few wips to finish first and that should give me time to get a pattern and colors picked. I am leaning towards the log cabin though I may find one (probably more than one!) that I would like to do too! This is so much fun!

And boy, do I have a book for all of you who like crocheted quilts: The Crocheter's Quilt Book - afghans with quilt motifs - by Elyse Sommer, ISBN 0-02-609170-4. Patterns include: Amish Split Bars, Split Rail, Diamonds and Arrows, Trip Around The World, Broken Star, Baby Blocks, Checkerboard Grid, Nine Patch, Patience Double Nine Patch, Roman Stripe, Sawtooth Quilt, Flying Geese, Cross, Hole In The Barn Door, Bow Ties, Rocky Road To Kansas, Pieced T, World Without End, Barn Raising, Log Cabin Fences, Snail's Trail, Melon Patch, Windmill Blades, Flower Baskets, plus a few others.
And then for those of us who love the Tunisian stitch, there's a couple of crocheted quilt patterns in this book: BHG Afghan-Stitch Crochet, ISBN 0-696-01786-5. Patterns are lap robe size: Aunt Sukie's Choice and Trip Around The World.
I'd love to do an Around The World afghan, but I want to think :think about how I'm going to squeeze this in with a trillion other WIPs :eek and to-do projects hanging around and what colors to use and yadda, yadda, yadda.

Hi Lynn
It doesn't sound awful to me, it sounds pretty ! I bet it'll be gorgeous when done ! Nice and bright like a rainbow .
Welcome, Kristen - nope, it's not too late- we'd love to include you . Any idea yet which pattern you like the most ? Or colors ?
Gleda, It'll be ok, you'll see ! You'll be glad you joined us. It's FUN !!!
Celeste, I know you'll pick something beautiful. You have a flair for colors and designs . I thought that Henry Clay Wheel was kinda intriguing looking -- also may be hard, I didn't read through it so I don't know !
Norma - Yea, I think the burgundy would look good ,depending on which pattern you use. I'd use it for the smallest color and do the main 3 in the greens and aran. Just my opinion. I think it'd look great as a small contrast color, not one of the main colors though . Just my 2 cents, for what it's worth ! ( 2 cents ) :lol
Jan - the 9 patch would make a lovely bedspread. The good thing about it is that you can increase it to any size very easily . Glad to have you along for the ride -- it'll be a fun one !
*** Just a reminder , for those of you trying to figure out a color scheme or layout for your squares-- there's a link on the first page for printable graph paper so you can either write out or color in your design to see how you want it to look .***

i was sure i wanted to make a half-granny square type of quilt. then i go look at the other links out of curiosity. now i want the around the world one. but i think i'm going to do bigger squares. light earthtones, i think. it would go good in our bedroom.

Ok ladies- Time to post where I stand on this one. I have been making these little squares for about a week or so now .
I am doing the Around the World , with ss in all the brites colors and a G hook. The squares are only 2 rounds so are pretty small . In order for all the colors to get a "turn", I have to make it 17 squares by 17, which equals 289 squares .
I so far have the following done :
9 lemonade
44 watermelon
44 iris
12 berry blue
___ black -- forgot to count how many -- there's maybe 20 of them done so far .
That's where I stand as of this morning !

Ok I went home and found the quilt pattern I'd printed out months ago. It's called the Blue and White Quilt Afghan (REALLY descriptive huh?). So I'm doing it in blues and white--but not because that's what the directions say--it's because my mom and I both have blue and white kitchens (actually I think it states in THE Book of Mothers and Daughters that kitchens MUST be blue). So we both like blue and white and I don't know if I'll give her this one or not. (rambling over)
So I couldn't find a picture of it online to show anyone. It was designed by Acrilan, or something like that. It's a bunch of squares and rectangles (big and small) and a few triangles to make a 12 3/4" square. You're supposed to make 15 squares and sew it together to make a 46" x 72" afghan. But who fits in an afghan that is only 46" wide?!?! So I'm going to add a whole additional row to get it closer to 59" wide. Yes I realize that that means I'm just adding 33% more work! :eek I couldn't wait so I RAN to Hobby Lobby and bought all the blue yarn in sight! Well not quite, but it sure felt like it. I got started right away when I got home :hook
Thanks for helping me find my crochet mojo Julie!
JulieKay

Hey girl -
Well, I'm glad I helped you find your MOJO . I didn't know for sure what it looked like or where to look, but I'm glad you have it again ! :lol
Your afghan sounds very intriguing -- sure wish we could see a photo . Do you have a scanner that you could scan the picture of it with ?
If not, we'll just have to patiently wait til you get some pics taken of it as you work or as you get it done .
Is it all in different shades of blue, or all one color blue with white ?
I'm so glad you are excited about crochet again ! :clap

Julie,
It's baby blue, navy blue, azure blue (I didn't really know what color that was so I went with a medium country blue) and royal blue with white. It should be an interesting mix. I had to use Caron Simply Soft, TLC Essentials and Lion Wool-Ease to get the right colors. I hope that they wash ok with each other? :think I normally used cold water with no heat dry. Hooray for crochet!:cheer :cheer

Ok I found a quilt block that looks similar:
http://www.quilterscache.com/A_C/ChildrenofIsraelBlock.html
But instead of the white rectangles in the middle of the blue field my square has those rectangles completely blue and then the corners of those blue rectangles have white squares...:think :shrug I'm sure that last sentence was more than a little confusing. As soon as I finish a square I'll just take a picture.
Julie, Believe me I do NOT need any more blue and white plates :) My place is lousy with them (they are even on my walls!)

Oh that sounds really pretty! I loce blue and white together, unfortunately I don't have much blue in my house. Can't wait to see a picture of it. The Israel quilt block you posted the link to is gorgeous! Wish I could fine that pattern in crochet.
I just asked hubby what he thought of the fan quilt afghan I am doing for my granddaughter, Shannon. His words were, "I don't have to like it, Shannon does." So, guess he doesn't like it very much. Shannon has just redone her bedroom in orange (bright) and lime green! Sounds awful and I thought before I saw it it must look terrible. When I saw it completed it is very striking, especially with the accents she used. This colorful fan quilt will be perfect in her room. She picked out the colors. Oh, to be a vibrant 18 again!!!

Well, I only read the first post here, but I wanna do a crochet-a-quilt crochetalong! I just got a leaflet that has several traditional quilt designs in crochet pattern!
Count me in! I adore the Double Wedding Ring pattern - I actually have a beautiful Double Wedding Ring quilt that hubby and I picked up on our first anniversary in Solvang, CA, a lovely little town towards Santa Barbara, and it's hanging on one of the walls in the livingroom. I'd love to make one in crochet!

I notice you all .

Oh Julie!
I just LOVE the tumbling blocks baby afghan! Would love to make that one too but better stick to what I have started.
Thank you for the wonderful quilt site! I love quilts and quilt afghans! On this site you can get the templates for each quilt block and I think I saw the templates marked with the size of the square or triangle. I'll have to look again when I have more time. If this is the case then it will be easy to translate to crochet blocks.

Lynn ,
Don't get discouraged by your husband's lack of excitement . Mine is pretty much the same way ,although he DID ask what I was working on with all these bright colors. You almost need sunglasses when looking at them .
Your granddaughter's bedroom sounds like mine when I was a teenager - Mine was also lime green !

Oh, I'll have to tell Shannon someone else had a lime green room! She wanted a lime green dress for prom but the dress she picked out didn't come in lime so I think she is wearing turquoise. Oh well, its another bright!

That Drunkard afghan looks so cool! Is it hard to put the curve in a square? I have a hard time imagining how it works? :think
insurechick
April 7, 2006, 11:26 AM
Fargoan...now it's not hard once you figure out what they do...you start in the pie shaped part in the corner and work across...increasing to make the pie shapped part, then you change colors and continue to increase for a couple more rows. then you start decreasing in order to get back down the the other corner.
That probably doesn't make sense, but I couldn't see how it would work from the pattern even until I did it a couple times.

Its out of the leisure arts Birthstone afghans . Her birthday is july 21st . She don't know I am doing it . I wanted to do it because she is such a great person . she sets her mind on things and she achieves them . She is there for you when you need her . I am rambling but thats what I am doing. its a really pretty pattern suppose to be in a ruby but all I could find was a autum red is caron ss which is really pretty . It has 130 rows and I am on row 15 so you see I have a lot to work on .

I was thinking maybe I shouldn't do this CAL after all and my MSN horoscope agreed: Projects that may involve a group, or perhaps your entire community, could take up a lot of your time, dear Aquarius.:lol But I'm going to try anyway. I've changed my mind from Pastel Pinwheels to the afghan I've been meaning to make for a few years now. It's called Amish Star & it's from Annie's Ultimate Book of Quilt Aghans. There are a few in that book I'd like to do eventually, but the Amish Star is the reason I bought the book. The only picture I could find of it is on ebay here (http://cgi.ebay.com/Crochet-Ultimate-Book-Of-Quilt-Afghans_W0QQitemZ8274480897QQcategoryZ11797QQrdZ1Q QcmdZViewItem). Amish Star is on the top left of the second picture. The hunt for the perfect yarn mix has been on and off, so now I guess it's back on. The pattern calls for 10 different yarns in graduated shades. Yeah, right. I'd be happy with half that, but haven't even been able to find more than 3 that are close to each other. I have so much other stuff going on and I know I shouldn't do this, but . . . off I go to look for the perfect colors. Wish me luck:worried

Hi, Shelly! I went to grad school in "Chambana" at the Univ of Illinois, Urbana-Champagne in the mid-80's. loved the school, loved the town(s), the nice folks, and the green fields! the campus even had a 100+ year-old plot of land planted in corn (continuously under cultivation for 100 yrs, not 100-yr-old corn....:D , the land itself is quite a bit older, heh, heh) that I walked by every day to class. Nice weather, too, as I recall. But then again, now I live near metro D.C.; they joined the Weather-of-the-Day club many years back (and are thinking of switching to the Hourly club, as is clearly evident by our most recent offerings....), so my memories of weather elsewhere are usually fond ones....
yep I live near Champaign and Decatur. Galesburg is a pretty city I'm sure you enjoyed going to school there!
and Julie? I just have one question (ok, maybe two, but here's the first)
How did you know my weakness for quilt-design crochet?
I thought I'd kept my dark secret under wraps (:D )... And then you just had to go and start another CAL, didn't you?:bang
I managed to keep from getting sucked into the lace-and-bobbles - too intimidating. And the cathedral window, although I've been drooling over that pattern for ages. and the 63 more squares - outta my league for now. and the Grandmothers flower garden - hiding all those ends? <<:scared shudder>>. and the homespun border patterned blanket, although I love that yarn, and have enough (and then some!) on hand to make it. and the scripture afghan, and the... because I was gonna get me some discipline. Yup, I was going to be part of one (count 'em, ONE) CAL, plus finish all those UFO's and make y'all proud of me. You get the picture? Are you feeling ashamed of yourself:embar , Yet? No? Well, paint one more hook on your computer monitor, you've bagged another hapless soul - I'm IN!
Now to decide on the pattern.... I'm gonna use caron simply soft - love that yarn! - and either the prairie star or the around the world - I'd been eyeing both patterns before you waved the carrot under my nose!:hook
and congratulations on your ideas - the number of responses in only two days should show you how big a nerve you twanged!
Oh, the second question? Well, when are you going to share with us your magic hook (or wand, tool, spell, or whatever) that you use to be able to answer all these replies, crochet, watch your darling grandboy, and still compose poetry? I figure you cut out eating, sleeping, and breathing, but that still leaves at least 27 hours extra per day unaccounted for....:juggle

I think I have decided on the Attic Windows pattern I found in "Vanna's Favorite Gift Afghans" book. There is also a pattern for the double wedding ring afghan quilt, but I think I will try to do that next. I couldn't find any pictures on the net of the attic windows anywhere! So I will try to post some as I progress. I have to wait to get yarn till at least next week, unless my rich Uncle gets out of the poor house and sends me some money! Anyway the colors I am going to use are what is called for or as close as I can get anyway.....brown, tan, cream, and two shades of blue. I can't wait to get started so maybe I can squeeze enough money out of the couch and between the car seats to at least get the brown to start the squares! I'm off to hunt for loose change!:clap

Well my pattern has changed again. So, I'm doing a monogram A surrounded by green block in the center, then a small border in yellow with green blocks in the corner, then a bigger border in green with yellow blocks in the corner and then finally a scalloped border in white with green stitching around. If you saw my little drawings with all of my ideas it would make your head spin! Now, I just need to do it. Off to LYS tomorrow. Julie, have you heard of Needlers Nest in Surprise? It's a nice store. Hey Brenda -
Well, if you are going to listen to your star charts, then I guess I'd better lay my hook down too ! I am also an Aquarius, Jan. 30th .
Of course this will take a lot of time, but it'll all be worth it in the end, you'll see !
The picture looks so pretty ! Could you maybe come up with enough shades if you used blues and purples together ? That kinda looks like what they did .
Don't drop out -- aren't us Aquarians supposed to be stubborn and bull-headed and don't give up ? ( Oh, no, that's just ME ... I'm as stubborn as a mule ) :lol

Well, I did as you requested and glued another gold star on my computer screen ,since I convinced another of you to BITE THE DUST , so to speak ! :lol
I'm glad I finally found a CAL that hooked you enough to give in and GO FOR IT !!!!
As for the time, I do spend a large part of my time here online. I watch my grandson 4 days a week now, so that leaves me 3 to do whatever I want . My husband is very low maintenance .We've been married almost 30 years, so we both pretty much have our lives down pat ( or some might call it a RUT ) where life is pretty simple .
We're kinda like Paris and Nicole ( The Simple Life ) only neither one of us is rich or pretty . I don't work, I'm a housewife so that gives me large chunks of time to do what I want .Our kids are all grown, married and on their own . ( WHEW)
As far as my grandson, he's the greatest joy in my life . When he's here I don't spend nearly as much time online or crocheting . He is almost 4, and will be going to preschool this fall , so that will give me even more free time ( HEADS UP--- MORE CAL's scheduled for Fall )
He is really the one thing I do that takes up a big part of my life, but i wouldn't trade that for all the yarn in the world !
Anyhow, I don't know if that answered your question very well, but that's pretty much my life. We live in a very small boring town, aren't exactly party animals -- a new flavor of Hamburg Helper is about as exciting as it gets here .
I like it that way, though ! Couldn't be more content . :manyheart

Dazy- keep searching, you'll decide on one soon !
Brandy- Wish I could help you on the posting photos thing , but I am the biggest DINGBAT on here when it comes to that . I cannot do it for the life of me !
Hi Andrea, yep, if you go back to post one, there's a link listed there for an online Around the World pattern. Let me know if you have trouble finding it . There are LOTS of links on that page now !
Theresa - good luck finding your loose change . I hope you can run your arm down the couch cushion far enough to find some. Also, you could try all the phone booths and pop machines in your area to see if anyone may have left a quarter in the change return . I'm trying to think of where else you could look. How about your car ? Does it have one of them little change thingies ? Maybe you'll get enough to buy your first color anyhow. Believe me, I know what you mean . We had lots of years like that ourselves !
Paulette - you guys are hilarious ! I can picture you backing your pickup up to the loading dock of the yarn store and loading it full of yarn . 8000 pieces ?
Well, I'm 48, so I have a few years on you . I'm figuring on mine being for my Road Trip to my final resting place ( NO, not the funeral home, the nursing home ) .We'll be in it together for the long haul .:manyheart
Maria - no I haven't heard of the place you're talking about . Is that the name of the store , or is the town called Surprise ? If so, I'd BE surprised -- didn't know Ohio HAD any surprises . The surprise to me is how many people still LIVE here ! :lol
Your afghan surely sounds interesting -- can't wait to see it ~ :)

http://www.caron.com/color_cards/cc_simplysoft.html
I didn't see any of the other brites that caught my eye, but how would you feel about the other color being the toasted almond or the plain green ? One of them may look good, just to kinda offset the other colors. I don't ever remember seeing the blue mint type shade in another darker or lighter color in any yarn -- and I look at yarn a LOT . :lol

I'm not going to be able to join, although these patterns look like alot of fun. I've just got too much other stuff going on right now. :lol
I looked at all the patterns, and my 2 favorites are the Around the World, and the Nine Patch. I see Julie is already doing these, or planning them. :hook

Julie, I'm leaning towards a green to go with the blue mint...perhaps I can find a green with enough "blue" in it. The blue mint is what I consider a "teal" and I've noticed teal is one color that is hard to get multiple shades of. I plan on going to A.C. Moore today and see what damage to my wallet I can do. :lol I really want to start this lapghan today so I'm determined to find something. Thank you so much for your help....you've given me ideas and I'm going to act on them. :hug

Good morning fellow crochet fantics!
I just wanted to add this link to the thread: www.lionbrand.com/patterns/chs-8afghans.html (http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/chs-8afghans.html)
These quilts are really simple-you just make a square with two colors over and over again. The design comes out by the way you sew them together. I made the diamond one last year in red and white for my nephew.
I'm cruising right along on my Around the World afghan. I'm making my bi-monthly trip to Hobby Lobby today to see if they have anything I need. Why can't I just stay on one thing until I'm done? I jump from project to project almost on a daily basis.
I'm really enjoying this thread, and I look forward to seeing all the great pictures!

Morning , Cindy and Hidey Ho Lynn !
Great to see you guys up and ' atem today !
Thanks for the link to the 8 different afghans all in one pattern . Would that be neat or what ? My gosh, the list just goes on and on .. This may be the longest running crochetalong in the history of the world . :lol
How hard were the squares ? I've never done a pattern like that where you do the color changes in the middles of the rows like that . And do you have threads on the back going from one row to the next ?
Do you have a photo of yours ? I'd love to see it !:c9

Hey Brandy - got any creamsticks in that box ? Pass one over here will you ?
My gosh, do you do beautiful afghans ! Folks, if you read this, PLEASE go click on Brandy's home page ... Those are awesome afghans .
I HAVE to do the prairie star . No question . The question is CAN I DO IT ???
The part of it that scares the BEEJEEBERS out of me is at the top of the pattern -- it says something like
911 -CAUTION -ALERT
THIS PATTERN TAKES EXTREME PATIENCE
IF YOU ARE LACKING THAT QUALITY , DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS
IT WILL MAKE YOU GO BLIND AND YOUR TOENAILS WILL FALL OUT .
I am the LEAST patient person who EVER walked the Earth . No lie .
I want one of them so bad I can TASTE it .
The afghan , not the donut .
I could run over to Walmart and get one of them ......

April 8, 2006, 10:32 AM
Oh Julie! You are sooo funny! Of course you can do it. I have done a few quilt afghans and they are easy to crochet, the difficult part is putting them together. I got one all put together one time and then saw that I had a row backwards! Had to scrap the whole thing! Since then I have found that if you sew the little squares together with wrong side to worng side its easier to see what you are doing. As for crocheting 1/2 square one color and changing colors for the other half --- thats easy too. It just takes one or two squares to get the hang of it. I usually will crochet the plain color squares until I am blind and bored to death then do some 2 color ones to break up the boredness!
Go for it!!!!!
(give you a donut if you do!:lol )

Well, Brandy, I'll tell you what :
I think with your talent you could pretty well close your eyes and just point to one and be able to make it . Let us know which one you decide on .:)
Lynn - pass me the donut first and nobody gets hurt .:devil
THEN we'll talk Prairie Star .

April 8, 2006, 10:39 AM
Yea, Lynn -
Just get some fingernail polish and paint spots where your toenails should be . Just don't wear flip flops that are TOO noticeable. It'll draw attention to your missing toenails .
You'll look almost as goofy as those ladies that shave their eyebrows off, then draw some new ones on with a pencil - they always look so SURPRISED !!!:eek

Brandy, I just visited your blog. You've made very lovely afghans! :cheer
All right, you guys, as I said earlier, I went to A.C. Moore this morning and I'm standing in the yarn aisle...and stood there :think ...and stood there...:think and then I walked out of the store; didn't buy a dang thing there. So I went to Michael's and did the same thing...just stood, staring at all those yarns. I finally decided :yay on my Caron SS colors for the Around The World lapghan: Iris, Grape, Orchid and Blue Mint. Since I cannot get a light Blue mint, I decided to go all purple and use the Blue Mint for the punch color. The Orchid is a little lighter than I wanted, but it's the only color I saw in Caron SS...so it will do.
BTW, out of curiosity I picked up a ball of yarn (wool or wool blend) that was approximately $10/ball and I'm pretty sure yardage is < 200. I read the label for care instructions: hand wash only, do not dry in dryer or out in the sun. :eek I think I'd have to make something really, really tiny for that price and that kind of care....like maybe the thumb portion of a mitten. :lol

Well, Lynn --
I DID it . I went and bought yarn to make the prairie star . Doggone it . Where's my Valium when I need it ? :tired
I'll hold off on it for awhile. I really would like a crochet buddy to team up with on it ,so I'll work on the one I have going now and hopefully you'll be ready to do yours when I get this one done .
Doesn't your husband make you mad when he says that ? Mine will ask once in awhile-- WHY'd YOU TEAR ALL THAT OUT ? So, there's a mistake -- leave it ,no one will know .
He doesn't understand . If I am gonna spend this much time working on it, it has to be RIGHT ... Certain colors look good in certain patterns, etc. Sometimes I'll tear the same thing out 4 or 5 times til I settle on what I want to do .
Anyhow, you just go ahead and get more yarn . What is he gonna do about it then ? It'll already be home waiting on you -- nothing he can do about it then, is there ?

Ok I was a bad girl...someone spank me....I went into the store and I was going to just break down and buy the yarn. I have it down to these two "Job's Troubles or Churn Dash". I know if I do Job's that I want to do the mutli color one and Churn Dash will do two colors...But (pulling hair out over this) I cant decide what color.....And my store must have had a yarn sale cause they are about out of every color you can imagine.....ugh. I did find this awesome magazine that someone else talked about and they have the cutest sandels in there that I am going to make....Well back to the drawing board...

Well, better luck next time at the store, Brandy - Hope you can find what you're searching for . It might be the same problem our walmart has right now. their yarn supply is very low too . They said it's inventory time and they won't be putting out much new stuff til they get all the old counted . It also seems they are getting rid of several brands of yarn . The ss is almost totally wiped out, some of the specialty yarns are gone ,and mainly they only have Red Heart as their main yarn now .It'll be interesting to see what they stock here when inventory is over .
Nothing wrong with Red Heart-- if that's what they have , then that's what i'll use. It is a very sturdy well made yarn . I've been getting a little spoiled with the ss -- it is so easy to work with .
I guess it will be easier for you to choose colors once you pick the pattern .
Let us know ~:)

Oh, we also have a WalMart smack dab in the middle! Let us know ----- churn dash or job's troubles! Either would be beautiful.

If you are like me that new yarn for prairie star will be haunting you until you start on it! I can't stand it to have something waiting to be done. I just HAVE to try a few squares and of course --- then I'm hooked!!! Yes, these men haven't a clue, do they? Of course, when it comes to anything with his boat it has to be perfect. He doesn't say too much as we are always getting a box from Cabala's. Something, a little trinket, for the boat, so he doesn't say too much. That boat is why I am getting a new puppy in May.:yay She was just born 2 weeks ago today and we can get her when she is 7 weeks old.:clap

Lynn - good luck with your new doggie !
and yea, the yarn would be bothering me, but I have bags of it stuffed in the closet. it has to be put away where I can't see it. The pile of yarn I have could get to be overwhelming if I SAW it laying out all the time . I'd feel like I had to shovel all the sand off Myrtle Beach with a teaspoon .
Brandy - we don't have quite that far to go for yarn stores, but walmart is closest and handiest . It's about 10 minutes away. The Joann's and Hobby Lobby and Michael's are all about half an hour away .

Thank you ladies for the welcome I think I am going to like it in here alot. I saw on a post about the 200 squares book I went shopping and cant find it in ohio anywhere guess we take to long to get things in. I do have the book with the 63 different squares although I have not made any of them lol. I think I am going to try the around the world afghan. Im contemplating taking one of the afghans I have that is getting a hole or two a part and using that yarn for it. That is unless I find something better. What do you think if i put a red, pink, and a mauve together you think that would look okay or sort of ugly? Any opinions will be appreciated. I have so much yarn like a skein here or there and have never made a scrap one guess Im not so good at figuring what colors go with what. Andrea

Brandy - Its a Golden Retriever from Dichi Kennel in Wisconsin. In fact they are right on the Wisc. River. We have one Golden girl now, she is 8 yrs old. Lost her dad in December, just old age, he was 13 1/2. Now my Sunny girl is lonely and we are ready for another puppy so have one reserved from this litter.
Andrea, Welcome!:) I think those colors sound intriguing. They are all in the same family so I wouldn't think you could go too wrong there. Maybe add an accent color - black maybe? Black goes yummy with all those colors.

Hello, :U
I hope you are doing well. I know I don't post that often, especially lately. This is because I have been trying to work on finishing all the UFO's on my plate. I know, I know, I didn't HAVE to sign up for any of them. You all are just so FUN, and warm, and engaging. - and the projects are all so beautiful.... I just have to face the fact that I am not as quick and organized as you all are. And I absolutely refuse! to start another one without finishing the others. I mean, my husband actually complained that he couldn't DUST the hutch today (my crocheting is in the way) - can you believe that!
I DID finish my 35 (turned 56) square afghan though.
AND I made another square for my 63 Square Afghan....and did 2 inches on my bobbles and petals afghan started in the 1990's sometime :blush
I would LOVE to do the prairie star - or another quilt totally of my own imagining. :c9

Hi, Julie!
Hey, I'm 48, too - but no grandkids (my son is only 8!!) - DH is calling bedtime, and I can't stay - spent the whole day chasing down patterns - can you say ADHD? Well, that's me - no focus. anyway, did get one of the 63 squares done last night, and found that my best friend wants it for her living room (colors are just what she wants, go figure!), so now that it has an eagerly waiting recipient, maybe the 63 square thing will move a little more quickly.
on the quilt pattern, I'm waffling between the baby tumbling blocks and the prairie star - I have several of the afghan patterns we've discussed in this thread, and the range of choices is just too hard to narrow down! will try harder tomorrow. (Say goodnight, gracie.....)
and, did anybody ever ask you about the routine checkup you had on day one of this thread? I saw your postings before the appt, but didn't see the outcome? ok, I hope?
love the interaction here - this thread is jumping!

Every time a CAL starts , time to gather up your things .
Choose a pattern and a hook
Can't decide yet ? Take another look .
What about all the colors of yarn ?
Do you want Burgundy red, or more like the shade of a barn ?
How about blues ,browns or greens ?
So many colors I have seen .
Any would look pretty in a quilt made by you
Do you have anything BETTER to do ?
For anyone out there still riding the fence
Climb on down and join us, it's only common sense .

Hi Patricia
Yea, I think we have quite a few people in the group that are in the Fabulous Forties ! We got married and had all our kids BAM-BAM-BAM , so we have had an empty nest now for almost 5 years . Although my nest usually has my grandson in it , which is great . He is the funniest person I've ever met -- such a comedian . He makes me laugh every day .
Keep on chugging along on your 63-- that WILL make it go faster if you know someone is waiting on it. At least that's how I work.. If I promise an afghan to someone, I try harder on it to get it finished quicker .
I know , it's hard to choose from all the patterns, but you'll pick a good one I bet (pick the prairie star .....:D )
Joking -- you can pick any one you want .

Hi Linda --
Well, I usually always go with the sc joining ,but some people don't like it because it leaves a ridge. If you do sl st joining , it leaves a little smaller ridge, or you can always go with sewing them together, but I avoid that at all costs, only because I HATE to sew -- but a lot of people prefer that since it leaves a nice flat neat -looking join .
So, I didn't help you a heck of a lot ,did I ? Anyhow, I like sc-- it just goes really quick for me, that's another reason I like it so much .
We'd like to see a photo when you get a square put together if you get the chance !

The early morning hours are the best for me . My brain is at top speed. As the day goes on it's kinda like a battery that runs too long -- gets slower and slower ... By the end of the day , it needs a rest ! :lol

Ok, I think I've decided on a pattern. I think I'm going to do this one (http://www.freepatterns.com/fp_pdfs/Other/Crochet/Pinwheel_Afghan.pdf)!
I am planning on making my dad an afghan with a pocket in the end for his feet and another pocket for a heating pad or something so I would like it to be a squares afghan where you put it together so that it'll be easier to sew on the pockets. My mom prefers all blue, and I already have the navy blue in SS. Now I'm deciding on doing the other colors in red and white or in shades of blue...
I should be able to get started on this next week! I hope! :hook

Julie --- I knew we were alike! That's when I do my best work too - around 5 or 5:30 am. House is quiet, just me and the tv (and maybe hubby drinking his coffee but he has learned to shut up, expecially when he sees me counting). Even the dog hasn't gotten up yet. I just LOVE early morning hours when the brain isn't fogged over yet from all the insignificant little life things. Some days that's the only crochet time I get. Most of the time if I drag it all downstairs to the family room, it just sits there anyway. By night time I'm too tired and the light isn't too good by my couch anyway.

Just got back from Joanns with some of my yarn! Hubby and daughters went to his parents house to start cleaning up the yard. I begged off saying I had too much laundry and house cleaning today and besides, I have to get some sleep sometime in order to go into work tonight:devil. So I snuck off to Joanns as the washer was washing and the dryer was drying! I got three of the five colors needed. That's enough to get started for awhile, next week I can get the remaining two colors! WOOHOO. I'm doing the Attic Windows and am doing it in brown, tan, cream and two shades of blue or turquoise. (although I may change from blue to something else, not sure yet) I bought the inexpensive stuff too. Carons One Pounds. Then I went next door to Good Will just to see if they had any yarn. I came out with green, brown, and red...but I really don't know what it is....but sheez I only spent 3 bucks. It came on cones and the inside tag says it is from Spinnerin in South Hackensack N.J.. I'm sure I'll find a use for it eventually! And some Pebble Beach from Reynolds Yarns for 50 cents. I'll use that for trim on something sometime. Now I really must get to cleaning and laundry so I have time to start this ghan tonight! LOL

Lynn,
I agree , early morning is the best. I always go shopping really early .Best time for the stores-- no crowds, no waiting in lines . Peace and quiet .
Theresa - Congrats on choosing a pattern , part of your yarn and also on the other good bargains you got at goodwill .
You little dickens-- sneaking off to yarn shop when you're supposed to be doing housework .....
None of the rest of us would do that, would we gang ?:D

Hi, Rosette!
thanks to Julie's picture, I realized not only did I have this booklet, I have two of 'em!
If anyone wants the second one, please send me an email - we'll trade, swap or something. By the way, it says it has 5 afghans, but really, there are only 3 patterns; Churn Dash, Job's troubles, and Attic Windows. Numbers 4 and 5 are color variations on Churn Dash and Job's troubles.
Hi Rosette
I found your pattern booklet -- here's the photo to save you the trouble of searching for it

Are you doing the one on the front or are there others listed in there too ?
It is BEAUTIFUL !

i finally decided to do the around the world quilt. i've got 7 color combinations of the 3 colors i picked out and am making the rainbow square. it's easy to do and fast. but it makes a 3 and a half inch square, so it's gonna take a bunch of them. so far i've got 18 done out of (i think) 313, if i counted right. i'll make those and put it together. then if i need to, i can always make more.http://home.wideopenwest.com/~sag55/rain.html. i would have had more done, but i saw a bunny in the original pattern links thread and had to run out and buy some chocolate brown yarn and make one. with a bite out of his ear, of course. i'd never made a stuffed animal before. he's a hoot!!:P i'm gonna put a pic of him on my blog.
okay, back to making squares.:hook

Hi, Julie!
I'm proud to join the CAL-dust-biting gold stars on *your* monitor! I can't think of a better weakness to have :) .
Well, I did as you requested and glued another gold star on my computer screen ,since I convinced another of you to BITE THE DUST , so to speak ! :lol
I'm glad I finally found a CAL that hooked you enough to give in and GO FOR IT !!!! [oh, it was only a matter of time; you're a pretty dynamic coach - but this one is well worth "falling" for!]
As for the time, I do spend a large part of my time here online. ..... [I'll bet!]
As far as my grandson, he's the greatest joy in my life ..... He is really the one thing I do that takes up a big part of my life, but i wouldn't trade that for all the yarn in the world !
So, I'm going to have to give up my hope of a magic solution? :2magic And I was so counting on it, too.... My (8 yr old) boy is a real joy to me, too. He is a cuddler, and I value every minute I get of it - I've been told to count those moments, since he could become *too cool* to hug me any minute now as he grows older.

Dazy -
Sounds like you have a good start -- you have your pattern and colors picked out and squares started -- yep, they do turn out small, so if you want a nice-sized afghan it'll take a pile of them. I have worked all weekend on mine ( when I'm not on here ) and am now weaving in ends .. YEK- why'd I save those til I got a HUGE pile done ?
NOTE TO SELF -
WEAVE IN EACH END AS YOU MAKE EACH SQUARE .
PS- what cans of air are you talking about ? I'm mixed up . You mean those AIR HORNS ?

LOL THanks for that as I need to remember that myself!
Ok, I think I've gone ahead and decided on red, white and blue. I guess this could be considered my project for both the Patriotic CAL and this one at the same time? :laughroll:laughroll:laughroll:laughroll

Donna - you sound like me now -- i want to do ALL the crochetalongs at once, so I'm trying to combine the following all into one :

Quilt -ghan
Ripple.
Pardon my French, but DANG --- How in the heck could I do ONE afghan that will cover all THESE bases ?

:lol
Hi Julie. You could combine at least four out of the five together. Do the 200 blocks in patriotic colors then sew them together diamond shape for the ripple and in a pattern to resemble a quilt. :hook Took me about 10 mins to figure that out...:rofl Not feeling too good today....Brain is not working. Just wanted to drop in and see what everyone had decided on doing today. I still havent figured mine out yet. Have a great one all.:)

julie, :rolleyes if you're gonna slack on housework, at least do it right. :lol my husband buys those cans of compressed air that are supposed to be used to blow the dust out of his camera equipment, computers, etc. but it will also blast the dirt right off the shelves. it's kinda expensive to use for that, but we all gotta make sacrifices.:heehee
andrea, have you looked at your local library to see if they might have a book with that pattern in it?
