I was mooching around at my mom's today, when I went to collect my son after school and found this cloth I made in 1992. It took me a year to complete, but I didn't work on it for about 6 months; I would complete a couple of rounds an evening, and towards the end it took me 2 evenings to complete a round. I worked in a factory making cast iron kitchen wares/scales at that time. It was the year I left home - so was broke and had a glass table that needed a cloth. I was even offered £100 by my supervisor for it, but I declined - everyone said I was crackers for not taking the money - but I am really glad I held on to it.

With my son -

It was 2 different patterns from crochet monthly with a bit of ad-libbing in the middle; one for the centre and one for the edging. I must have used about 800g of No.10 thread in different shades of cream - because I bought one reel at a time (I was broke!), with a 1.75mm hook. It is 5 ft diameter. The only draw back was it got heavy to work on towards the end.

It's lovely. I know what you mean about buying one skein/ball at a time. Did the same with my first large project. I was a working single mom & would buy a skein on payday. That project ended up with about 5 shades of the main color:)

That is very pretty! And it's good you kept it. One, as a reminder of leaner times that you came thru and two, still something beautiful was made even though you didn't have much money. Three, it is an heirloom piece. Maybe you can give it to your son when he has a home of his own. :)

Looks great :clap and has some history, (1992) plus sentimental value attachment.

I would make it an heirloom piece to hand down to someone. :)

Also it might have more seniority in your home then anyone else
except you lol ;)

What a beautiful work of art! I don't blame you for not taking the money. Something like that is priceless and would be worth a lot more!

That is just georgous. It reminds me of one I made quite a number of years ago. It was pineapples and pinwheels. Some friends of mine asked me to make it for them (they paid me of course). When I finished, I wanted to keep it myself. Thought I would never finish it though. I only had time to work on it at night after work. One thing about it, when you work with thread, you can make some beautiful things, just like yours.

I realize this is an older thread which has been brought back up but I missed it the first time. Lovely work, Liz. Just lovely. And I am very impressed that you put several patterns together to come up with a coherent whole. You inspire me!

I missed this thread too somehow. Wow! That tablecloth is a real winner! I love how intricate it is & the even stitching. I sure hope it's getting used. Gorgeous piece!

Beautiful! I love it. You did a great job on this. When I didn't have money, I'd buy a ball of yarn and make one doily out of it for a gift (only way I could afford a gift). I wasn't ready to make a larger table topper until later.

I love thread crochet and I have made a big, but not that big, tablecloth and I know how much work it is. I really admire the work you put into this one. It is gorgeous.
