View Full Version : Bookmarks for Gifts: pattern added

Here are some bookmarks I made for the school fete. I also did a heap at Christmas to put in the cards, and have a few on hand as a "Thank - yous" and Birthday Gifts, Mothers Day etc.
They sell like crazy at the school fete. I enjoy making them in different colours, and mount them on a piece of card with some words scribbled on. ala Happy Reading, Thinking of you etc.. Depends how soppy I am feeling :lol
Unfortunately they don't photograph well under the cellophane. If you click on the images you can see a larger view and appreciate the detail.
Now as for the pattern, it is in my head. If someone wants I can try and write it out. I cant remember where the original came from as I have been doing them for years. Funny thing is, this is he first thread crochet I have posted here. I hope you enjoy it. :manyheart

What thread did you use? I love the colours. . . don't seem to see much variegated here, except for #80 tatting thread :)
Yes, please do try and write out what you do -- I'd love to try the pattern too.

Thanks for all the nice comments. As I have disclosed on another thread I am obsessive compulsive when it comes to variegated threads. :blush I cant stop collecting them. I just love the way the colours work out. They are not easy to find here eithor , but I treasure them when I do find them. Particularly in brights.
I will find the thread and post the details. I will also try and write the pattern out for you all. They are effective in the pretty colours. :manyheart

OK, here goes.
Now for the uninitated, this is the first pattern I have tried to write up. Not only that I did a conversion for the Americans out there (lol). Now my poor brain is sore, and I hope I got it right. :think I think I originally got this pattern from a kind lady in a nursing home where I once worked. I worked it from one she gave me. If it is published somewhere, I cant find it. So I hope there is no copyright on this. In any case I am not worth suing, unless you want my kids and enviable stash of variegated yarns. :lol
Fan Bookmarks: origin from a kind lady in a Gold Coast nursing home.

Thanks so much for the pattern for those beautiful bookmarks, cupcake. I think your idea of including them in cards is just great. They're nice to whip up when you don't feel like working on a big project. I'm sure they also fit well into a purse for those times at the doctor's waiting room!

Good on ya, cupcake! :rofl
Thank you so much for giving us the pattern! And for the thread info -- now I can use up that #40 hanging around from my tatting days. I have Cotton Perle #8 too and even some pretty variegated Turkish thread :yay
Hey Claire, I might come from the UK but I definitely don't sound like HM :queen. In 2000 I was on holiday in Arizona when some (American) tourists stopped me to ask for directions. I couldn't understand why the man started asking me how the cricket was doing (what I know about sport could be inscribed on the head of a pin, and I care even less). Then it dawned on me; he thought I was from Oz. . .

May 24th, 2006, 05:57 PM
Aelita, Cupcake is from Australia and I believe she can only use size 8 perle cotton for her thread work since I don't think she can get size #10 there. . I'm not sure what size hook she uses.
However, Jackie (jaclim here at Cville) made some of these bookmarks, and she used size #10 thread and a size #7 hook. Here's the link for hers: http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=26011&highlight=bookmark
Jackie also sells some really cool size #10 thread by Canon, Monoco, and Anchor and they come in some very unusual and interesting variegated colors and solids that look great in things like these bookmarks. Mimi here at Cville also sells thread too.
I hope this information helps. :hook Have fun!

you are correct, I am very limited in what thread I can get as I a far far away in down under Australia. I have never used a 10 or seen most of the beautiful threads I see on this site.
I use a coats 40 with a 1.25mm hook, or a coton perl 8 by semco.

Cupcake, have you seen this site (http://www.crochetaustralia.com.au/category36_1.htm)?
They have some pretty variegateds. . .:devil
I have some of the Altin Basak no. 50; it's Turkish thread, good quality and some pretty colours, and works up just slightly finer than a UK/Aus size 20.
I didn't look at the prices, though, so I don't know if they're outrageous :haha

Many thanks, yes I am a customer of that site but the 10 only comes in a white , and cream. I havent tried the Altin Basak number 50 so I appreciate your comment. I am always a bit scepticle of ordering stuff of the net that I have never seen as it is hard to judge the exact thickness and quality.

Hi all! I'm fairly new here although I registered with C'ville quite a long time ago. I have a few probs with tendonitis so I tend to crochet on and off. I LOVE to crochet and could just about cry when I cant do it although I manage to keep busy cross stitching and knitting a bit as well.
Anyway........I didn't mean to post a semi-intro here. I just wanted to say a big thank you to cupcake for sharing this recipe, err pattern. :heehee It's just lovely and I'm going straight over to Crochet Australia (http://www.crochetaustralia.com.au/index.htm) to order some thread. I have a quite a lot in my stash which is stored out in the van (my spare room) but it's SO darn freezing, I'm not stepping outside at 10.30pm to go fetch it. Brrrrr! :wbrr Besides, any excuse to order a little more stash has to be a good excuse. I'm sure I don't have any variegated out there. I really NEED to buy some. :devil I was so thrilled to find this 'thread', I immediately printed out the pattern and thought I'd head for bed and make one but alas........the freezing cold.....you know....:snow I'll have to wait until tomorrow. I'm thinking these will be great to make for our school fete that runs every November. I have plenty of time. :juggle
