Here is a summer top I recently finished. I am quite pleased with it. I made it using a square from my 300 crochet stitches book. I joined them as I went. I used a sport weight yarn and a g hook for most all of it and then an e hook to shaped the neckline as I did the neckline edging. I fits great and is nice and stretchy. I've already got two more in different colors in progress. It was quick and simple to make.( images are clickable)

Totally love that top! I've been looking for something like that as I work outside in the summer and need something that isn't spaghetti strap but that is cool. Going to have to go pattern diving for some squares I see :D

I was a bit nervous about making it out of squares but It was really simple. I used the Cranesbill lace square ( a 4 round square) from the Harmony guides 300 crochet stitches and joined it on the final round. I joined 8 of them together in a strip and then joined the 1st square to the 8th to make a tube and then kepts adding squares to the tube until I had 4 rows of squares that made up the body. to separate the tube to make the arm holes I simple joined 4 squares across the front and 4 across the back leaving an opening for the arms and the one square each for the shoulders and the basic construction was done. The edging on the neckline helped to make it rounder rather than squared off . I recommend drawing out your basic diagram to help you visuallize it.

That's really nice :)
What kind of yarn did you use?
That looks like it took some patience - I'm amazed that you were able to get it to fit you so perfectly.
Bravo!

Well, that is stunning! :clapGreat color on you.
So, by my calculations you used 44 squares. Is that correct?
What size would you say each square was?
Can you tell a few of us would like to give it a try?

Thanks you all are great for my ego LOL. I used 42 squares ( Only one square for each shoulder that joins the front to the back)
I measured the square and it is approximately 3 inches without being stretched. However it's a fairly stretchy square especially using the join as you go method.
I haven't tried making it in a larger size yet but I'm going to attempt to make a bigger one for my sister by using an H hook, once I get some of the WIP's done.

I just love all your work, Sonny321. You are really talented. I'll bet if you practiced writing down your patterns you would have a market for them. I'm sorry if I missed your answer on this, but what yarn did you use? I think you said it was a sport weight? But what brand?

For the green one I used Spinnerin Sabrina( I can only find it rarely on ebay) It's 100% acrylic and has teriffic stretch and washability. But I have a cream colored one started in a sportweight cotton/silk blend ( no wrapper as it was a thirft store find) and a lavender one started in a Gorgeous yarn called Aunt Lydia's Shimmer Fashion, I found it at Walmart and so far I am Loving the look and drape of this yarn. It is a more slippery yarn than I am used to working with so I have to wrap it an extra time around my pinky to control my tension better but I will most definately be using this yarn in other projects. It is a 64% cotton/36% rayon blend, and is machine washable( air dry). I saw a limited selection of colors available at my Walmart but the colors I saw were quite lovely.

thanks all for your kind comments.
I made a crudely drawn diagram of How the Cranesbill lace squares are assembled to make this top
here:http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v631/Sonny321/04997d2e.jpg
The squareish shaped neckline was rounded out by using a hook a couple sizes smaller and working a row of single crochet around the neck opening decreasing a stitch or two at the corner areas. then adding a small scallopedge to finish it off. Hope the diagram helps to explain the basic construction.

OMGosh!!! I absolutely LOVE it! Do you have any suggestions for adding sleeves? With cooler temps on the way, I would like to use this same idea, but in sweater fashion. You are a GENIUS! You have opened up a door of endless possibilities for me. With all the different motifs available (square AND round), I am already driving myself Loony just thinking about it :loco. Again, I :nworthy. Thanx so much for sharing! :hug

I am not normally a fan of garments made from squares because they tend to look rather clumsy, but your top - wow! - it is so sleek and shapely. ( I have to add that having a figure like yours helps).
