View Full Version : Shrug Along!!

I realized in retrospect that I should create this CAL so that more of us can participate and have fun! In that light, it's a general Shrug Crochet Along! :manyheart

So, here's my first attempt at starting a CAL. I'm not a pro like Julie, and I don't have her charisma, but I figured I'd do my best. :D

I need to make 3 of these! One for my mom for her birthday in June, one for my soon to be sis-in-law for Christmas, and one for myself (I'm last priority).

So here's a big shout out to everyone who want to make a shrug! C'mon and join in the fun!! :cheer

Some Links for Shrug Patterns:

fayettesmom (Robyn) has a pattern in our the links forum for a Spider Lace Shrug (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=22769). $3/5 goes to the Susan G. Komen breast cancer awareness. I know a number of members here have purchased it, and one suggested that making a CAL out of it would be fun.

mrs who made up a set of schematics for making a shrug as well as an alternative version made from the same basic schematics! You can use any type of yarn, and any decorative stitch you want!

Hello Enid
Here's a wish from me to you for the Best of Luck on your CAL group !

Wish I could join, but right now I have to stay on task with mine . It keeps me hopping . :bounce

You'll do a great job, I know you will . :)

let me see what i can find that would strike my fancy. i did the mrs. who shrug for the crochet olympics and then had to make another one cause my daughter snatched it. my son has a new tiny pocket-sized girlfriend. i could always make something for her. it certainly wouldn't take much yarn.;) maybe one of the short sleeved ones this time around.:scrachin

:welcomeYay! Dazy you're my first shrug-buddy! :manyheart

I'm stuck trying to get my guage right. I send a private message to the designer, but haven't heard back yet. Perhaps someone else who has made the spider shrug knows the answer.

Does anyone know if the 4" x 4.5" is width x height, or height x width? Also, does anyone know if that measurement should include what appears to be a 10th row (first row repeating)?

I just started a Mrs. Who shrug last week. I'm using the stitches she used with a jewel tone varigated red heart yarn. So far I'm about 2/3 of the way done with the inititial rectangle.

.....I'm stuck trying to get my guage right.....Hi, Enid! I'm still trying to get my stitch consistency down in the things I'm working, *then* maybe I'll be able to tell whether I even have a gauge, much less trouble with it! :rofl

But more seriously, I'd love to do one of these - they look so cute, and I've got several tween/teen friends who'd love 'em. JulieKay keeps us hoppin', so who knows when I'll get that shrug off my WIMind list and onto my WIProgress list, but in the meantime, I'll gladly follow your progress!:hug

Best of luck! (and how 'bout moving your shrug to the middle priority slot? could be good motivation......:c9 )

Welcome Mardar! Post some pictures for us when you get your rectangle done if you can! :)

Pplcrochets - You're very welcome to join in anytime you want to. :yes I'm actually thinking I may do mine first to work any self-inflicted bugs out. I'm hoping that it won't be too time-consuming.

I got an answer from the lovely author of the spider shrug. She says that the gauge is supposed to be 4" wide by 4.5" tall. Also the complete stitch diagram is used for the gauge. I miscounted the rows. :blush

I've never done a CAL but am interested in do it. I am sure there is a better place to locate this answer, but how does it work?

Hi Jenskie! :)

There's a great post about what Crochet-Alongs (CALs) are here (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=25727)

The general gist is that a theme of some sort is picked and anyone who wants to make something in that theme can join in if they want to. Sometimes the same item can belong in 2 CALs. Like if you made a shrug in red/white/blue and were American you could join the Shrug CAL and the Patriotic CAL. We all cheer each other on, and some folks post pictures of their work in progress. The post describes it better than I can. :blush

Warning! CALs are addictive but fun!!! :hook

I'm so in!! :hook I did a shrug-a-licious for the Crochet Olympics but the back turned out all funky and I wasn't happy with it at all. So this time around I'm going to do the Mrs. Who shrug, which is what I originally had intended for the CO. Now, to find the perfect yarn...:c9

Welcome Theresa! Welcome Stacy!

I'm very glad to have you both join in!

It's ok if you have to delay a while to start Theresa. I'm in the same boat with the Quilt CAL -- gotta find yarn on sale so I can start it!

I'm in for 3 shrugs myself, so I'm in for a long haul! :hook

I've been unusually lucky today with getting lots of time to crochet. :hook

This is my first project using simply soft, and my first shaped wearable. The only other wearable that I can remember that I've made from crochet was a scarf for my husband for christmas.

I'm doing the Spider Lace Shrug by Robyn. Other than some problems I've had because I was too tired and not paying attention, for the most part it's been fairly easy because she wrote out such nice clear instructions. Getting the gauge right was the trickiest part for me.

Here is a picture of the three colors I'll be using. The Victorian Rose is for mom, Orchid is for me, and Berry Blue is for my soon to be Sis-in-law.

http://www.ladyofroses.com/projects/spider_lace_shrug/Cville_SLS_Colors.jpg

I've gotten the back done (I think) prior to the sleeve shaping. I'm not 100% certain how it will come out, but I removed one repetition of the pattern because I have a narrow back. I'm hoping that when I finish the first sleeve it'll be clear if I boo-booed. Time will tell if a'froggin I will go! :2frog

very pretty colors, lady. i'm a sucker for the victorian rose.
i've decided on making the mrs. who, but with short sleeves and a narrow trim. i think it would be cute for summer to go over a tanktop. son has a new girlfriend, so i may see what color she likes and measure her. she's tiny like my daughter, so i could probably make one for each of them.
i made the original mrs. who when my MIL got sick and was in the process of passing. it kept me busy and i got it done in just a week and a half. of course that was working on it quite steadily. i did it in SS charcoal. i love the feel of it. like wearing a hug.:hug and i got the yarn on sale, so it cost less than $10.

Dazy - Good find on the yarn! I felt fairly confident that my mom would like the color as well. I thought she'd also like having it in the color for the breast cancer foundation (pink) as it would give extra meaning to the project.

I'd have used the same color for myself, but I thought we may feel a little silly wearing the same color, same pattern if we went out together. :D

I'm IN! Just the inspiration I need for a shrug I started and got about 2% of it done before it became a UFO... and it's NOT a UFO - it's really pretty - in WoolEase, a gray color, and it's from a book something like Victorian Crochet for Today... designers replicated patterns from old pictures of crochet garments and they are lovely!

<sigh> I need to join you ladies... I started a Mrs. Who Shrug for the Crochet Olympics and I ummm never finished it (hangs head in shame) I got soooo sick of all the sc's for the sleeve/tube that I ended up putting it down once I got the sleeves done.... <sigh again> It's in a pretty lilac color (Caron One Pounder) so it's not like I don't like it.... anyway, I want to wear my sweater already!!!!! (stomps foot) (mad at self for not having it done yet) I have like 4 or 5 rows of the body/ruffle done......

Count me in!

tina, if you got the sleeves done, the worst part is over. do like i did and use a more open stitch so it goes quicker. i think mine was done with a V stitch for the sleeves and the stitch on the pattern for the body of it.
welcome everybody that has decided to join us. we'll have some fun. i need to get to the store and check out the yarns. something soft and breezy for a young adult. go figure, i buy 9 skeins of yarn last week and none of them are right for this.:blush :yarn

Ok, do I qualify? I am making a bolero, which is just a fancy word for a shrug with the pattern I am using. I have finished everything but the trim on the sleeves. I have put it down because I got tired of looking at the yarn. I am in the middle of making 4 top type things for my grand nieces and after two completed, and this third one, I just got tired of looking at the yarn. I think this would make me finish it...

tina, i learn most of my stitches from annie's attic's stitching help section. but today, my computer is acting up and everytime i try to go there, it shuts down my IE and goes back to my desktop.:angry i've seen it somewhere else too. if i find it, i'll let you know.
cool, we've got more shrug buddies. knicknac, anytime i've looked at pattern sites, they always lump shrugs, sweaters, and boleros together. it's all the same to me. adri, the mrs. who is simple and pretty. it's more of a general way of making it and then you can decide what stitches you want to use depending on if you want it looser and more airy, or heavier and more sweater-y. it's the first wearable i ever made and now i've made 2. one with RH and one with SS. i REALLY need to go yarn shopping:blink .

Welcome Flybabytina - Just think you can join two (2) CALs for the price of one! You can also use this same project to join the UFO CAL! :D I know what you mean about single crochets taking so long. I just finished a 63" long x 48" wide blanket with the body comprised solely of single crochet! :eek I think it'll be a while before I do a large SC project again! Sounds like your shrug color is very close to mine. Mine is orchid by Simply Soft. :)

Welcome Twoqtgirls - Sure! It's ok if you can't join in right away! So long as there are shrugs to be crocheted, people will likely come and go thru this CAL. You're welcome to join in whenever you can. :)

Dazy - If I ever do another shrug for myself personally, I think I may go with something like a V-Stitch. It's simple, yet pretty. This spider lace is very pretty, but takes a lot of pattern reading! :lol

Welcome KnicKnac - Sure, I don't see why a bolero wouldn't qualify! I noticed in looking at some shrug patterns that some look like boleros. I think technically shrugs are all one piece, whereas a bolero may have set in sleeves? I'm not sure what the difference really is, but it's close enough in my humble opinion! (Don't forget the 2 for 1 CAL because it's a UFO too) ;) CALs are so addictive!!

Welcome Adri! - Any particular color you're thinking of going with?

KnicKnac
April 26th, 2006, 05:45 PM

Ok Lady of Roses - this bolero does have set in sleeves. But it was actually made in one piece, kind of like the Mrs Who shrug.

Tamar - Does that mean you're sewing it up today? Then starting the 'edging'? :clap

I finished up one sleeve last night and I sort of tried it on for size. It's a tight fit but would look good over T-shirts. However, I figured that if I want it to look like the picture, it needs more give. So I added the pattern I left out before on the other side and am starting on the second sleeve.

I'm hoping to get circular knitting needles on Friday so that I can do the cuffs and collar with them instead of by crocheting them.

lol well can past shrugs count lol... I have already whipped up 3 1/2 shrugs this year working on that other half and started a 4th one here for my dds. And have 3 or 4 more on my list here.
For someone who wants to make a shrug and is a tad afraid of trying them.. The Lion Brand site has a great easy one done in Homespun yarn it only takes 2 skeins of yarn.. I did one for one for my dds and they loved it where she works.. I just added some more detailing on the edging of it... You know us hookers got to add something lol...

Paulette - Thanks for the suggestion for an e-bay store with shrug patterns that are instant gratification purchases!

Darlene - I think it'd be hard to Crochet-Along with an item that's already done. ;) The 1/2 and 4th shrugs definately would be CAL-able. *grins* Thanks as well for another option for e-patterns.

Hello all!

I really want to be in this CAL but I have so many other UFO's I need to wrap up right now so I'll have to see how things go. However, I wanted to let you in on a little secret about that Who shrug. :hook (I love that shrug!)

I made one for my daughter around Christmas and these are the adjustments I made to save my sanity...

1. Instead of crocheting across the short side of the rectangle part of the shrug, I crocheted the longer side of the rectangle. I found that my rectangle was much more even (for some reason it seemed faster for me) that way.

2. Instead of using sc, I used a hdc. I even considered using the v stitch. I bet this shrug would look good with just about any stitch.

3. I will never make another Who shrug using Joann's Angelhair yarn. I kept having to go back and buy more yarn and the shrug ended up being sooooo heavy! Next time I'll go with a sport weight yarn for that thing.

One of these days I'll get the pic of the shrug up on my blog. :blush (It's been 5 mos already!)

I hope this is helpful to someone in some way. Happy shrug making!

I'll be honest Suzee, I'm not very good with "fashion" as a whole. I tend to wear simple stuff, and pratically have to be hand-held to get a specific type of item. So I'm afraid I won't be much use in suggesting a pattern type for you.

You may want to post an ISO thread on the patterns wanted forum. One of the more veteran members of the board with a much better eye than myself may have some great suggestions for you. :)

Lady of Roses...I don't follow the fashion either. Since I have 4 dogs, my usual attire is jeans and a shirt. :) It's just that sometimes things don't fit across my bustline and I get discouraged. I appreciate the tip, though. :ty

Well, don't feel bad. I'm not exactly 'normal' shaped either. At least you don't have to climb on chairs to reach stuff. :lol

I'm 5'2, have an actual hourglass figure (some sand is stuck in the middle these days tho ;) ) and let's just say I would've preferred if nature had made my hourglass a bit smaller. Oh, plus I have a narrow back, so it's hard to get a good fit, especially since I'm front-heavy. :blush

The one on the Lion brand site is:

it is called
Simply shrug I think..:think
:manyhearthey, i believe i could do that one. but if i'm going to make it out of homespun, i'm keeping it. and with coupons for michaels, joanns, and hobby lobby, it would be inexpensive, too. just 2 skeins. wow!:yay

i've found the shrug yarn of my dreams. it's RH plush in a denim-y color. it's soft, but lighter than regular RH and i think it will be great for summer. its kinda fuzzy, but not as bad as homespun. that stuff is hard to see where you are working. i've got alot going on this weekend, but i hope to start on it first of the week.:cheer the hard part is over. the agonizing *choosing of the yarn.*

Antara - Welcome! I'm using Simply Soft too, and I must say other than it splitting more than RH, I quite like it for my shrug. It's very soft and is looking pretty.

I frogged my way too big shrug and am almost finished with the Moda Dea shrug (http://www.modadea.com/patterns/LM0202.htm). Have the body and sleeves made, the seams sewn, and am weaving in ends before I add the 4 rows of sc edge..... Not too thrilled with the pattern or the yarn. Ended up just working it into the general shape the pattern called for. But it seems to be turning out ok. I'll post a picture shortly.

Hello everyone:

I've been lurking around this thread for a while and although I made the Mrs. Who shrug some time ago (great pattern!!!), :manyheart I'm tempted to make another and join you guys. I came across this pattern (http://www.*****************/AntiqueCrochet/free/DrapedBedjacket.htm) quite by accident and wonder if anyone's attempted it. The directions seem a bit odd (my guess is because it's an older pattern)...:think

I've made it, it's not great. Nice stitch, but the shaping is odd. You might want to do a search here, cause someone here posted changes to the pattern a long time ago. You would be better off using Mrs Who's shrug schematics, but using the stitch pattern from the bedjacket.

Thanks for your comments, sherryzzz and tepperwear - that's why I love this forum. :lol

I thought the patterns looked similar. I'd rather make the shrugalicious one, of course. ;)

The reason I hesitate with this type of pattern, is that I have "stork arms". My wing span is about 6 feet :eek (a conservative estimate) and it took me 2 weeks of steady crocheting to make the rectangle for the sleeves for the Mrs. Who shrug. The remaining body part only took 2 days. If I can find a way to make the rectangle part go more quickly, I'm in!

I thought I'd dig out my photo from the archives for display:

very pretty, mason. when i made mine, i chained the lenghth of my arms, then made it as long as i needed it for the back. and i used a more open stitch so i didn't have as much to do. i've seen some patterns where you had to start at one wrist and make short rows to the other end. thats way too much turning for me. or you could do like i'm doing this time. i'm making a short sleeved one to go over a tanktop. come on, you know you want to jump in with us.:yes :cheer

Thanks so much sherry. Someone had mentioned it earlier or I might have said something. The hat-along never used any of my hat patterns, and I thought about saying something but chickened out.

Mason, you can try my pattern, but do trebles instead of dc. Not sure if that would help.

Ok, I decided to make the Polish sweater, or cocoon sweater. It is almost like a shrug. I have the back almost finished, and I am doing it in SS, in a light beige. It will have some black accents. I haven't made this before, so will see how big it is or small. Then go from there.
I feel better now that I have started at least!!

the deciding is the hard part, berni. now you can get to work and have fun. can't wait to see it.
i started my short sleeved version of the mrs. who yesterday. i'm using RH plush in a denim color and a plain DC with a K hook. it's coming right along. i have about half of the rectangle done. then i'm going to put a narrow trim around it to just sorta finish it off. i'm thinking maybe a shell stitch trim. if it turns out right, i may make one for my daughter. this one is probably going to son's girlfriend.
have a glorious crochet day!!:cheer

OK, I'm having a bit of a dilemma. I wanted to work the Mrs. Who shrug cuz I think it's very cute, but...I want the shrug to have a ruffly bottom, but not the collar...I just want it to be plain, like this one-
http://www.modadea.com/patterns/LM0218.htm

But I'd like to make it long-sleeved. Does that make sense? So, what I'm wondering is...is there a way to work up the Mrs. Who shrug, with the ruffly thing at the bottom but not around the collar? :think

I frogged my way-too-big shrug and am almost finished with the Moda Dea shrug (http://www.modadea.com/patterns/LM0202.htm). Have the body and sleeves made, the seams sewn, and am weaving in ends before I add the 4 rows of sc edge.....

Here's a pic of the finished item! http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/sherryzzz/detail?.dir=74e5&.dnm=c1bdscd.jpg&.src=ph

I made it following the 34"/36" size instructions. I didn't really check the gauge before I started. I thought that the Light & Lofty would closely approximate the bulk of the two ModaDea yarns held together. Also, as I was running out of yarn, I only did two rows of sc crochet around the edges instead of the 4 rows called for in the pattern. It's a bit wide for me through the body (I wear a US S/M on top), but it will fit one of my two DDs or my DIL, so am quite happy with it! :yes

As for the Light & Lofty, I don't think I would do anything but the simplest of patterns with it if I used it again. It's too hard to see the stitches even using a large size hook.

dazy
May 3rd, 2006, 11:32 PM
very pretty, sherry. i know what you mean about the light and lofty. i made a shawl and if it had been anything but a "DC in the next space, chain 3" situation, i'd have pulled out my hair. that fuzzy stuff makes me nutz!:thair

Ginger - That's a cute shrug! I rather like it myself and am eyeing it for a future project. I do hope Dazy was able to give you the kick in the pants you needed. ;) Welcome!

Welcome Knit-errant (Leigh)!

KnickKnac - Congratulations on finishing your shrug/bolero! It looks nice!! :clap

Welcome Antara! Shell stitch is very classic and pretty. :)

Cheryl - You're so tall and skinny! Lucky! If you used an open stitch like V-stitch, or maybe shells, perhaps the rectangle would go a lot faster for you?

Berni - Congratulations on finding your pattern and starting! It's always so agonizing deciding what project is most worth your time and money, isn't it?? I know it's rough for me!

Stacy - My only suggestion for if you only want ruffles at the bottom would be to sew up your shrug, do the ruffles as rows, and then maybe do at least a row or two of border around the top of the collar to make it have a finished appearance. Just how I think I would do it, I'm sure there are better suggestions out there.

Olga - You'll get started yet! I'm sure there will be some of us left when you're creating your shrug. I'm pretty sure I will be!!

Tamar - Frogging long rows sucks, I tend to want to take a break after frogging myself. How are you finding the spider lace shrug? I found that after I got the hang of it, I only needed to look at the pattern for the edges.

Sherry - What a cute shrug! I really like the colors. I made an afghan with very similar colors!

Shrug buddies - I finished my shrug on Monday night. I haven't gotten any pictures yet because I need my husband to snap a couple of shots of it when I'm wearing it. Onwards to shrug #2! (Same pattern, but in victorian rose simply soft).

stacy, congrats on picking your yarn. i'm not familiar with lustersheen. i'll have to look at it next time i'm at a real yarn store. wallyworld doesn't have much of a selection, and with the price of gas, my trips 30 minutes north are few and far between. don't worry about bringing up the rear on this CAL. there are still some of us picking out yarns and patterns and finishing up other projects first, so we're gonna be here awhile.:cheer

http://static.flickr.com/45/141445717_b759f588b2_m.jpg

It is a thick-and-thin yarn (slubby?), which I've never used before. I made a swatch of double crochet but it was very airy. I think a simple stitch will be better than a complicated one, to show off the natural texture of the yarn, I'm thinking of single or half double crochet. Any suggestions on using this type of yarn combined with different stitches?

Berni :Dhere is a piece i found explaining it a little better (i think) here's the explanation and the link:
The sweater is crocheted in one piece, starting with the back. You crochet a rectangle for the back, then you bring the corners together at the underarms and join them. You then crochet in rounds to make the shawl collar, the sides, and the bottom. After you finish this portion, you attach yarn at one of the underarms and crochet the sleeve in rounds, then repeat for the other sleeve.

Have not been on this site in a few weeks, (had to break addiction) lol, but I am back. Just finished my first detailed shrug and have a few questions. I used Leisure Arts 4 Stunning crochet shrugs, #4357 I made the one on the cover "green shrug" ( do not know how to post link, sorry). The pattern calls for Sports Weight (3) light, ( new way of yarn weight), well there is very little yarn that comes in that size that is adult looking most are baby yarns, bought RH anyways, in light yellow. Well later noticed in back of this booklet, they stated they used Red Heart Luster Sheen, guess what, that is not the same weight, Luster Sheen is considered a 2, not 3. I was so mad, contacted them, and got no response. The shrug is beautiful, but wish it had more body to it, the sleeve width seems way to big, it is made like a ragglin set in sleeve, and I do not like the width, either did my grown daughter whom I made it for. I do not know who to make it smaller so that it would set in correctly, if anyone has made this and can suggest a way to make the sleeve less full I would appreciate it. Forgot to take picture of it. Please check their site and see their shrug patterns, very nice, all of them.

Hi Dazy :)

Thanks so very much for welcoming me! :D I'll be happy to help if I can. :) I wound the first ball of yarn and crocheted three rows, but thought it didn't look wide enough, so I frogged it and doubled the chain length to 130. Now I hope it doesn't turn out too big. :lol

Why do people wind their yarn in balls??? I mean...doesn't it come in pull out skeins already ?:think

Valentine
May 8th, 2006, 07:05 PM
I don't wind small center pull skeins into balls, but everything else I do. It's just easier for me. :)

Irikel,
I wind my yarn when the pull skein doesn't cooperate and starts to tangle because the loose end wraps around the one I'm working with. Some of us started in the days before pull skeins when you put the yarn around a chair back or found a good friend or brother, to hold up their arms and hold the yarn while you wrapped, and wrapped. Those were also the days when the yarn still had Lanolin in it from the sheep and your hands were mosturized while you worked.:yes

Well, update on the shrug that was rescued from UFO status because of this Shrug-Along (another reason I LOVE Crochetville!)

This is a real repetative stitch, sc in each of next sc, dc in back loop only of next two dc. back and forth. :yawn back and forth. Makes a neet looking cloth because the single crochets are all on top of each other and the double crochets are on top of each other which makes they 'poof' out a bit....

but, because it was in UFO status I just picked it up WITHOUT refreshing myself as to the pattern repeat and was doing two sc, then two sc in back loop only.... for about EIGHT ROWS.... :yell

So here I've finally picked up the blasted UFO and then I have to frog what progress I did make.... (and yes, it took me that long to realize "this doesn't look right:no "

Oh, well... I'm no quitter... I'm going to work on it right now... I mean, after I finish checking around the 'ville!

:knit :kick And by the way... who let the knitter on here?

Hi Berni - I don't know how to post a picture that shows up right in the message, but I use Yahoo Photo to store my photos and then just post a link. If you have a Yahoo ID, it's very easy - I find it easier than any of the other photo hosting sites. After you save your photo onto your hard drive, just log into Yahoo, click on "Photo" and then click on "add photo" and follow the instructions. After your photo has been added, open it up, copy the address (from the address box at the top of your browser bar) and paste into your Crochetville message.

I'm putting my shrug on hold for now- my Sis-in-law is having a fiesta this weekend and I'd love for the girls to have matching ponchos to go with their dresses, so...I'm going to attempt 2 of them by Saturday. :eek But I will be resuming my shrug-work next week. :hook

boy, i've hit a snag on my shrug.:think i was making a mrs. who shrug for son's girlfriend and before i got the sleeves part done, they broke up. not a big nasty breakup. just one of those things. they hadn't been an item very long. but, now i've got half of a shrug and i don't know whether to turn it into a lapghan since i've not joined the seam to make the arms, or should i finish it and hope the next girl is the same size? or make it bigger and keep it for me? it's made with the really smooshy red heart plush.

LoLoL
It sounds very comfy so I think you should just finish it for yourself. :devil

As for my shrug...after assessing my closet this weekend and realizing that my daughter has almost no jackerts for church, I've decided that I'm going to turn mine into hers. And since I haven't made it past the 10th row or so, it should be fairly simple to turn it into a short-sleeved one for her. :hook

I worked out my issues with the pattern. I had printed it out a while back and there were parts that I found ambiguous. I went back to the website and noticed that the pattern had been edited some. It's much clearer to me now.

But.......................

I'm at a standstill because my sister (who I'm making it for) is looking at other shrug patterns and may want something different. If she chooses something else, I'm going to make the coral picot for myself in another color.

ginger, don't you just love it when people change their minds in mid-shrug?
countingsts, welcome to the gang. what shrug pattern and colors are you going to use?
adri, looking good. i think doing it lengthwise is much easier. alot less turning and chances of me messing up and having it all wobbly edged.
i've decided to make mine for myself after all. i'm still working on the body/sleeves and can just make it wider for me. it will be short sleeved, but that would be nice for summer. and i'm not going to make the trim as wide. just a little to give it a finished look.

I'm curious to know how everyone who has crocheted a mrs. who shrug (or another all-in-one-piece shrug) has sewn up the seams of the arms? I've sewn up arm seams both ways: sewing (but not with regular sewing thread - use your yarn to sew with) and also single crochet. Sewing gives you a flatter, less bulky seam. But single crocheting the seams is quicker.

Whoa how cool, I'm currently working on a shrug from the sight that the light blue one with the schmatics came from, lol. But I'm not ready yet for the blue one. For now I'm working on one called "Shrug-a-licious". Is anyone else working on this one? I'm almost done with this one. i have to finish up the collar then make the other cuff. I was hoping that it would fit me, but I think my daughter is going to get this one, lol. Darnit, lol. My next one will be the light blue one I mentioned earlier. But i think that one may take a bit of time.

Hi Ladie of Roses:

Count me in on this CAL since i've begun a shrug for a lady as a swap between her and I and well I have bought patterns from the Shrug Lady. She is in the internet and she even gave me permission to post photos on my website and gave me permission to sell some ... Great lady she is..
Any ways, her patterns are simple to follow and thats me, I need simple and fast. So once i'm done I'll get back here to ask where do i post a photo and how to's for posting..
I'm so excited now...

If you would like to get some creative juices flowing, consider this piece:

I am thinking that it could be adapted into an intriguing shrug pattern. Yet another WIM ( like I need another one eh?)

I finished my shrug!!! And I'm so so happy with it!
I posted pics in the Clothing Show-and-tell, here's the link:

This was my first crochet-along and I had a great time. It was really motivating to be a part of this, I enjoyed reporting my progress here and being able to ask and answer questions on all of our shrugs.
So how is everyone's shrug coming along?? :)

Hi! I've been reading through the different CALs the last couple of days. They look like so much fun. I decided this one would be the best one to join right now since I'm working on a shrug for my grandaughter for Christmas. I'm making Cotton Candy in a sport weight yarn. I read that some others are also making this one. After I complete the body of it, where do I start the sleeves at? It says at the ends but that doesn't make since to me from looking at the picture. TIA for any help.

When you complete the body, you should have a rectangle shape with the first row at the bottom and your last row on the top.

Fold the top down to meet the bottom and then pick up either one of the ends (left or right side) and join the row 1 and row 16 beginning stitches.

When you make that a circle by joining, you will then work around that circle to make the sleeves.

Repeat this on the other side and make that sleeve.

if this doesn't explain it - maybe it will give you enough to ask that we can see (guess) where you are being challenged.

Thankyou Darski. I guess I was reading it right. I've set that aside for right now so I can get started on a couple of other projects for Christmas. I like several going at one time so I can switch between them and not get bored.

Has anyone seen this shrug:

I was reading postings in another CAL and they told of some sites that I didn't know about. I'm finding too many patterns that I'm in love with! I think this one would work up fairly quick for those that need to get stuff done quickly for Christmas.

Another pattern that I found that others might like, too.

Adri, I am so sorry I missed your post. That is a wonderful shrug. That colour is starting to call my name from the shelves as I go by these days - now seeing yours - I know why.

You did a great job. So classic.

http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r53/snapdragon928/crochetedshrug.jpg heres the start of my mrs who shrug. I did a shell pattern, made it sleevless then added on angel sleaves. I am not quite done with it yet. When it is I will have my daughter model it, its hers. I want to add more to it, but she doesn't want the collar and front ruffly part on her shrug like it is for the fluffy pink shrug.

Is it possible to make a shrug in a week, want to make one to wear next wednesday as going to see Dolly Parton at the NEC Birmingham UK, going to be using the pattern for the fluffy pink shrug.

Have started one in Sidar Blur - pink, but not happy with it, so started another in 4 ply baby - Lilac, as cant be bothered to undo the pink one

My Dad has bought me a pink stetson to wear as well :cowgirl

Well, depending on the pattern and yarn I'd imagine it'd be possible to make a shrug in a week. I made the first one in 8 or 9 days, not crocheting every day.

I know it's a little late, but I wanna join!:D This'll be my first CAL and I LOVE LOVE :manyheart LOVE shrugs! So count me in! I think I'm going to be doing the Pink Fringe Slouchy Shrug (http://www.dianelangan.com/CrochetPatternFiles/websafenames/pinkshrug.html). Do you think it could be done in regular WW instead of the TuTu? On the moda dea site it says that TuTu is 4 medium weight. Is that the same as worsted? I really like the way the TuTu looks, but I don't have the money to spend on 7 skeins of yarn at $6 each. Does anyone know of a less expensive alternative? This shrug just looks sooo comfy...and comfy is my middle name lol. Any help with this problem would be appreciated!

Thanks for all your help!

Hi Krystal! It's never too late to join into a CAL unless it's been put in the archives. I'm actually going to make another shrug or two after I finish up my blue star afghan I think. :)

4 is Worsted weight. There's a website called Yarndex that I believe some other Cvillers have recommended for finding alternative yarns....

Here's a link to the Moda Dea yarn on it. I _think_ that if you click on the number beside Gauge it will give alternative yarns that are the same gauge. Also if a yarn is really close, sometimes just changing your hook size can make it work up to gauge too. :hook

Using 4ply dk and using size 5mm hook and doing it in dc, might do some shell pattern on the bottom of the sleeves. have done about 15 rows of the rectangle so far, not perfect, but practice makes perfect. Not working at the moment so have plenty of free time to get it done (hopefully). Will post some pictures when I have done some more.
