View Full Version : My first adult wearable

Thanks to MamaHooks for suggesting the pattern! I had some problems with it, but the pattern suggestion was perfect!
I wanted to make something for my mom for Mother's day. Never made an adult wearable, and was concerned about sizing it. It satarted off really well, and I was proud that I could do it. In the end, I'm a bit dissapointed, but it was a great learning experience. First, I reduced incorrectly - instead of just eliminating the ch, I decreased over 2 sc, so the neckline went all the way to the shoulder. I had to compensate by adding extra rows to the edging. Also, we're a fat arm family, and the arms were too narrow. I had to add a bunch of extra rows to the shoulder. Finally, I didn't want ribbing on the sleeves so I just repeated the pattern. I dont know if it will be wearable.
Hubby thinks its great (he's my #1 fan) and thinks I should send it to mom. I may try to make a purse to go with it so that there's something that she can actually use. I do like this pattern, and will try it again one of these days. :)

I think you did a wonderful job :cheerCongratulations:cheer. I am sure that your mother will realize the effort it took for you to make it for her. You should be very proud of yourself; you did a great job and you challenged yourself to try something new. That takes a great amount of effort and confidence to make a wearable and to make it for someone who is so special to you. I say - Wrap it and give it to your mom, she deserves the best; and you are the best daughter she could have!

I think it looks fantastic. Do send it to your Mom. She will be so proud of you. And a purse to match will make it perfect.

thanks everyone! I think it looks better flat than on - perhaps mom and I need to lose some weight for it to look good on.:lol
I do really like the pattern. MamaHooks suggested it, and you can find it here. (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showpost.php?p=359833&postcount=2)
I used Aunt Lydia's crochet cotton as the pattern suggested. It's a tight pattern so the cardigan is heavy. I do like it and will try to make one for myself, but it'll be too hot for Florida so I'll probably switch to a looser stitch pattern to make it lighter (and faster).
You're all very kind - from the back it looks lovely, but when I wore it, it wasn't great from the front, and my mom is a bit larger than I.
I have very close to a full ball left of each color, so I'm going to try to knock out this tote bag (http://www.coatsandclark.com/fun_and_free/crochet_thread/lc1240.htm) to go with it. That way if the sweater doesn't fit, there will be something usable. :yarn

I think it looks WONDERFUL for a first attempt! You should have seen MY first adult NON:laughroll wearable! It truly was NONwearable,:eek and I recently took it out of the hole it was in and frogged it, and am hoping it becomes wearable in the not-to-distant future......
It really is difficult to do wearables for adults. I'm still experimenting. At least you can fit a "normal" adult size. I'm a 2XL and am not happy with the fat patterns out there, so I'm into the design thing right now, (with an aside to do a doily due to the beautiful ones :drool at the thread show-n-tell). And this is ALL THE FAULT OF THESE TALENTED PEOPLE HERE AT C'VILLE!:yes
PS Love the color combination!

I'm lucky to have 2 pregnant nieces and a lot of opportunity to make baby things. At some point it'll fit them. Grown up stuff is hard! I'm glad that I realized the sleeves were too small before I sewed the shoulders. I have fat arms, and this thing would have cut off my circulation.
The good thing is that this pattern made me a bit more comfortable with shaping. I think that if I took some measurements, and decided on a stitch (like I said - this sweater is heavy and I'ld like something more lacey) that I might actually be able to pull off a no pattern pattern. That would be cool! :D
