Hi! I am in desperate need of a hat pattern that doesn't use rounds or grannies. They both confuse me. So if anyone has one that would be great! thanx! :hook

A few years ago I was crocheting hats for the homeless. I used a really simple pattern... well it's not really a pattern, and I no longer remember how many ch's to start. Basically, I just crocheted a long rectangular piece in all double crochet, but going into the back loop only. This produced a nice, ribbed hat.

What I suggest, is make a chain (leave a long tail) long enough to go from your forehead to the crown of your head, plus about 2" to fold the front of the hat into a cuff. DC into the third chain from the hook, and all the ch's. Next row, ch2, DC into each DC, but just into the back loop. Just keep doing the back loop double crochet, back and forth, and keep measuring it on your head until it is long enough for the end to meet the beginning. Once you are happy with the size you can either crochet the beginning and end together , or sew it together using the same yarn... (makes a tube). Take the tail from the beginning chain, thread it in a darning needle, and go back and forth through the ridges on the DC... pull tight, and secure the thread. Turn the hat inside out, fold up cuff.. voila... instant hat :) If you wanted to, you could make a pom pom and attach it to the gathered part... I never did, because I didn't know who would be getting the hat.

These work up quickly. I used a single strand of worsted weight yarn.

Hope this makes sense to you.

Here is what I do. Don't get too hung up over the gauge, as they are stretchy and fit most any head. I use this pattern to teach new crocheters. In fact, I teach them for free if they make one for charity.
Simple Crocheted Hats Note: Single crochet in BACK LOOPS ONLY. This creates the ribbing and stretchiness.ADULT SIZE – Makes about an 11 x 16-inch rectangle.Supplies: About 4 oz. worsted weight yarn. Crochet hook – size I or JChain 37 looselyRow 1: Single crochet in second loop from hook and in each chain across, in back loops only. Chain 1, turn.Row 2: Single crochet in each single crochet in back loops only to end. Chain 1, turn. Repeat row 2 until it measures 13 inches long (approximately 72 rows), or as long as needed to go around head. Finish off leaving a 24-inch tail.Using the tail and a yarn needle, sew the short sides together with a whip stitch. Secure at the top but do not cut yarn. Weave the yarn in and out (using the yarn needle) around the top. Pull the yarn to gather the top shut. Put in a couple stitches back and forth to close up the hole and secure the yarn. Weave in loose ends. BABY SIZE – makes about a 7 x 13-inch rectangleSupplies: About 2-1/2 oz. sport weight yarn Crochet hook – size F or GChain 31 looselyRow 1: Single crochet in second loop from hook and in each chain across, in back loops only. Chain 1, turn.Row 2: Single crochet in each single crochet in back loops only to end. Chain 1, turn. Repeat Row 2 until it measures 13 inches long, (74 rows) or as long as needed to go around head. Or BABY SIZE with worsted weight yarn. Use an H crochet hook. Chain 31 and follow baby size hat directions. Rectangle should be 13” long at 60 rows.
Hmmm. I have tried to edit this to fix how it is all run together. It won't let me. Sorry. I add in the spaces and blank rows and it pulls them back out.
