I have had one started for many years! i am making one large granny square with the leftover yarn i have. I stash the small balls of left over yarn in the basket with the blanket and then when i am bored of what i am working on at the time i work using the scraps! who knows when it will get done:think

Ok, I have been scarce around these parts as of late. I was getting REALLY discouraged on not getting anything done on my scrapghan - and then I figured out why - it's TOO BLASTED HOT TO MAKE AN AFGHAN!!! What the heck was I thinking??? Making a afghan in the summer????

Oh well - I decided to get something done since I was the one that started this whole CAL and started whipping up something for someone that just had a baby in the neighborhood...I posted about it in another thread...

I hope you all will take me back...:sigh

I just did a square from a book I picked up from a garage sale. Here it is - it will take me FOREVER to finish this, but that's OK. I just have so many things to do!

It's from a REALLY old Women's Day pattern book, all 70's vintage stuff - some really wild things in there! It's called "She Loves Me, She Loves Me Not", but I can't find it online anywhere. :( I bought the book specifically for THIS pattern. You can mix and match any of those tiny little scraps for the flower and/or stripe.

I just don't like crocheting into a chain - drives me batty, and that's how you make the petals. UGH! scs, hdcs, and dcs - all into a floppy CHAIN! But, I like the pattern, so I'll suffer....

KnicKnac
July 18th, 2006, 07:50 AM
Nope, it's a Crochet Along - which means you join in when you want, and you finish it when you can. It's a scrap-ghan so it's probably going to take some people a really long time to get it done because they are waiting on scraps!

Krystal, I love your flower hexagon! I made this afghan years ago, but lost it to a flood. I started another one, but it sits in my scrap basket and I don't work on it much. Just seeing all the wonderful scrap-ghans in this thread makes me want to join this CAL so I have an excuse to finish it!

BTW - I started my first one in 1975 and finished in 1985! It was back when I was just in my last couple years of high school and early college years, and I didn't have much money for yarn at that time, so I could only work on it sporatically. Now I have more scraps than I know what to do with, so I think I can finish this one lots sooner than it took to finish the first one!

Squish you where right, there are some very interesting colors in your giant granny. Wonderful job! My daugther and I enjoyed looking at the hats you've done, she really liked the light brown one especially. I really liked the afghan you had at the bottom of your blog, that is very pretty.

I hadn't done much on my second scrap ghan lately, got caught up in another project and am now at a point where I feel like I can safely work on a few others.

Thanks for the comments! I love doing hats, they are my absolute favorite! once i have the crown done i can pretty much do what ever i want...the brown one was double crossed crochet...i think that's right...and i'm kinda waiting on scraps for the scrapghan...i'm hoping to have it done by Christmas

I'll join in on this one since I've already got a scrapghan WIP. I'm doing a pattern from a little Leisure Arts book -- Scrap Wraps. The one I'm doing is called "Cheerful Checks" (it's not the one on the cover). This is a great book for scrapghans, it's got five really gorgeous patterns. I picked the book up for a couple bucks at Michael's. :cheer

ok, i just saw this cal tonight, and it seems like a nice, no pressure, "add to it ghan" whenever i finish up another project....so, in the spirit of "it takes me 3 years to finish a blanket anyway" I"m joining this CAL, and will probably be a part of this CAL for the rest of my crocehting career...and eventually, I should have a really nice, yo-yo ghan!

Hope ya'll will have me!

This afghan may well lead to my final breaking point into insanity! I sit and look at it like it's going to bite me! I swear! I absolutely hate making things with loads of color changes. I'm one of those people who live in fear that someday, something I make will unravel the first time it's used... by someone I love dearly. And the more yarn changes, the worse my odds are for that!! Not to mention, the time it takes to change yarn drives me crazy!

I have had no time to crochet since buying the house and moving... and I admit, I'm not forcing myself to get to the afghan. I'll let anything come first. But this blanket was asked for specifically by someone I'm really trying to... I don't know, impress I guess. And I really do need to get used to scrap patterns because I keep so much scrap yarn lying around! But coming back here and looking at everyone's beautiful projects has inspired me... thank you!

I really need to get through this one blanket... before I'm too old to remember WHY I was making it in the first place!! ugh!!!

Thanks again for the inspiration! Everyone is doing such a great job!

I came across the yo-yo's shortly before I came across this cal, I'm dying to make one of those ghans but since i'm so new to crocheting I have hardly any scrap to use, I would have to go out and actually buy yarn to make a scrap gahn. I might rummage my aunts stuff and see what she has that I can use wish me luck if I find anything cool I might be joining you Yo-Yo makers *does a Yo Yo dance*

August 5th, 2006, 08:16 AM
Just to let you know Melissa, most Goodwills and thrift stores always have bags of leftover yarn, usually for only 3 or 4 dollars!

Looking forward to seeing your progress!

*******

Ladyinthemoon - I so know what your talking about the unraveling thing. It scared me, until I started making things with lots of colors and washing them and then being ultra surprised that they were NOT coming apart! Don't let that fear overwhelm you and make you not finish your afghan!

*******

Ada! Welcome to the club of the never ending scrap-ghan project!

*******

Oh well, I have stayed away from this thread long enough! I am so sorry folks, I kind of let the yarn-ball drop on this. Haven't been doing my job of Scrap-ghan coordinator very well, but I intend on changing this!

I had originally decided to do a yo yo ghan, and dumped that, sent all the yo yo's I made to a fellow 'Viller and have now gone on to another project.

http://delusionalcrochet.blogspot.com/2006/07/cute-afghan-square-scappy-style.html

That is the one I started on, and I already have about 12 of them made. So we shall see.

I didn't completely fall off the earth, I did do a baby scrap-ghan but neglected to take a picture of it before I gave it away, silly me.

Anyhoo, I am back!

well i've given in...im going to ac moore tomorrow, I'm just gonna look for a few different shades of blue and a blue varragated and get one skein of each (hopefully no more than 4 and hopefully they will be clearance) I'm going to make this for my bed. My bed spread is blue and white but I don't really like using a lot of white so i was thinking of using blue and black and using this as my bed spread type deal for a while.

My only question si how many yo yo's do you think I would need to make something that fits on a queen size bed but also hangs over both sides of the bed and a little off the end?

Here is a photo of what I am working on. I think I posted this a while ago...but I think it was on the UFO CAL thread...it is my scrapghan that is also my UFO!!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v223/busyhsmom/DSCN03081Custom.jpg

The photo is a bit deceiving in that the stripes are actually horizontal, but for some reason I draped it over the chair in the opposite direction. I am doing every 4th row in black, otherwise, it is totally random...a very hard thing for me to do.

I used a pattern that I found in Leisure Arts... A year of Afghans.... Book 4. The pattern is called "Stained Glass". It's a very simple pattern. You make it in strips and then join them together. The color changes and weaving ends are what will drive ya crazy. But then I guess that's just part of the scrap yarn process, huh. :) I do think it was worth it... now that I'm finished. But while I was making it, it almost drove me crazy!

The pattern is from a Leisure Arts pamphlet Scraps + Black = Afghans. I tweaked the pattern a bit. I really didn't plan out the colors. Whatever came to my hand was crocheted. The white is suppose to be black, but I didn't have enough in my stash, so I used white and off-white. Thanks for the compliments.

Pardon my ignorance. What is a "corner to corner afghan?" :think

crochetluvknot
October 13th, 2006, 12:50 AM
corner to corner is also known as box stitch you start with a chain of say 6 and make 3 dc or what ever the pattern calls for then chain so many and the first box is your first row the second row will have 2 boxes and so on it grows a row at a time then you decide how big you want it then when you work a decrease row you form your other two corners and work down until its one square and finish it off.

OK, I'm going to double-dip with my CAL's on this project... It's flowers, so I posted it to the flower CAL, but thought you scrappers might want to see it, too....

I sorted all of my scrap yarns and balls by hue, came up with a bag of autumn colored yarns, so started this square that I just change up colors when I want to. I think it's turning out prety well - I also changed it to be join as you go, so I'll only have the pesky ends to deal with!

Hi! I feel like a dork, but I finished mine, and gave it away already! I might be able to get the recipient to send a picture, but I have a picture of it almost done, so I guess that will work. I think it turned out really great, although there were a lot of ends to weave in lol, but that's the nature of scrap ghans I guess. I can't wait to work on my next one! After I finish Christmas presents, I want to make a scrap one, that is a giant granny, but that'll be a little while... :)
Here is a picture of it almost done. Each 4 square section is black, and all around it is different colors. It's 3 rounds of a granny, attached as you go. It is a little dark, so some of the colors like dark green, blue, and marroon look like black, but you get the idea. It was a lot of fun to make!

I'm sort of doing this. I have 2 scrap-ghans going. One is a granny square and one is a yo-yo like one. I have only about 7 squares started and at different rows (the largest at the moment is 3 rows, the others are 2 rows).
I have a little over 100 of the yo-yo's done and only been working on them about 2 weeks between other projects.

Ladies, it has been AGES since I have posted. :blush I started another scrapghan when I first posted (way back near beginning of thread) and decided to give it up and have been giving away all my scrap yarn (and stopped buying it at garage sales). I made 3 scrapghans in a row prior to this thread and just decided I was burned out. Having developed some arthritis problems, I've decided to concentrate on afghans with newly purchased yarn, rather than trying to use up scraps. :eek

I just LOVE what you gals have been doing! I also forgot just how wonderful granny squares can be. Although I'm still crocheting (trying to finish Mom's Rose afghan this month), I'm mostly trying to do a lot of quilting just now. Keep up the great work!

Well, I haven't gotten much farther on the squares for my hubby's scrapghan, But I've also started a bunch of granny's daughters to do a blanket with those too! nice thing about those is I can make them as I'm working on other projects with the left over yarn!:clap

Ok, I went through my catch all and found out where I am on my one scrapghan. I have 21 squares (5 inch) so far, I'm making the blanket like the one on the back of the couch on the show Roseanne. I'm also making Grannies Daughters to make a blanket with those, but I forgot to count how many. I have another scrapblanket going too with Rectangles instead of squares, but none of the squares are full sized yet.

I'm hoping they will all be done by this time next year, I think that's reasonable!

Hi. I'd like to join. I have a ripple going using scraps and also a little star so I'm not cheating but this morning I started making this with scraps:

I fell in love with this when I saw the pic. I'll add to it whenever I find some scrap that seems like the right color to go into it. Right now I'm putting a variegated to start that has white, pink and peach.

I love that sweater pattern you linked to. That could be a challenge to add to my expanding list of WIM's :sigh

Hi! I haven't posted in a while, but I finished a scrap ghan. Actually, many of the squares were given to me to make an afghan for a Native American Reservation in South Dakota, so that is where this one is going. I think it looks a lot like an afghan I saw in a Mile-A-Minute afghan book, that looks like stained glass windows. That is where I got the inspiration for this one. I just had tons of squares of different sizes, and I didn't want to add to them, and make each one the same size, that would take so long. Anyway, I just joined as I went, making each strip, then joining as you go for putting the strips together. Thanks for looking!

I found this thread back along way and decided to resurrect it since I also found a few scrap projects buried at the back of craft cupboard that really need to be finished. Since I am a member of the "stash busting" and "Look up into the sky" CAL's I really should seriously finish these. Anyone else still working on scrap afghans.
