***Do you have scraps you don't know what to do with?***
***Is your scrap stash becoming larger than your yarn stash?***
***Do you love to try new crochet patterns?***
***Have you ever wanted to make a motif type afghan but were afraid of the joining process?***
***Do you like to act crazy every once in awhile?***
***Do you LOVE coffee?***
If you can answer yes to the majority of the questions above, then this CAL is for you!!!
I looked for a CAL that dealt with scraps for an afghan and didn't find any so I asked Yarnaholic if I could start one and she told me I could! Yes, I do believe I am a glutton for punishment! It's ok tho, I like being under pressure!
I have been wanting to start a scrapghan forever. I have been afraid to mainly because I used to believe the only scrapghans were the ones that you made granny squares and then sewed them all together. Boy was I wrong. There are many different patterns to do scrapghans in.
I figured this would be a long ongoing thread that we all could pop into whenever we finished some other project and had leftover yarn to do something with.
This would be my first scrapghan and my first CAL, so I have alot of questions, and I am hoping the more experienced ones can join in and help us newbies along!
I am kinda hoping EmpressBusyBee stops in because I have noticed that she is the QUEEN when it comes to links, and I bet she could post a bunch of different patterns we could all look at and pick one for our very own scrapghan.
Here are some links to get you started:
Smaller Motif Squares (http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/directory/smaller_motifs_squares.php) - if you wanted to do a square type afghan and then join them - if you do the Crochet Dude has a very nice joining tutorial here (http://thecrochetdudepatterns.blogspot.com/2006/04/dudessembly.html)
Stained Glass Window Afghan (http://members.aol.com/SAG55/stainglass.html)
Scrumptous Scraps Afghan (http://patternsbydot.blogspot.com/2006/01/scrumptious-scraps-afghan.html)
Medallion Afghan (http://www.nancyhearne.com/drawingboard/medallionafghan.htm)
This is one I think I might try:
Yo-Yo Scrap Afghan (http://hometown.aol.com/lffunt/scrapyo.html)
So what do you all say? Who wants to join me in a Scrap-ghan CAL? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

ME ME ME! I want to join! I've been thinking about how much scrap yarn I have left over from various projects and couldn't think of what to do with them. The yarns have a variety of weights (some without labels, so no clue what they are) so I don't know if I'd be able to combine those to make a blanket. I have so much yarn (usually partial skeins) and no clue what to do with them all! Thank you so much for starting this CAL. I would DEFINITELY love to join it.

Count me in! It may take me a while to get through this, as I have a few other WIPs going, but I also have a massive excess stash problem :devil . I definitely could stand to make a scrap afghan to get rid of a lot of it.

eyenowhour - AWESOME! I am not sure, but as long as we stick with guage I think we might be able to use any type yarn? Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I would imagine that all the yarn that you would use for a blanket would have to be washable. I will try to find this out ok?
Pam!!! So glad your joining in! The point is with this is NO PRESSURE! It's a CAL that you can only do when you are finished with other projects because, well, it's SCRAP! LOL
I am so happy there is interest in this! WOO HOO

I'm already there! I have two different scrap afghans going. One is a granny's daughter afghan. The second one is yo-yo's out of baby yarn. I made an afghan a few years ago for a friend's new baby. It was a yarn with a dye lot, so I figured by making the small motifs you wouldn't be able to see the difference in the dye lots.

Please count me in!
I have left over yarn from my last 4 afghans that I've thought of doing something with, mostly shades of blue from my daughter's ripple afghan.
There is also some bright red left from my father's Flag ghan.
Last night I started doing a granny square using my largest size hook, (K) and the square is measuring about 9 inches. Thought about doing some of my favorite squares from the 63 Square book.

I would love to be in on this one!! I've never joined a CAL yet, but this one is very appealing because, like a lot of you, I have more scraps than actual skeins in my stash. :D I really like the yo-yo idea you mentioned, KnicKnac, but the joining seems a bit complicated to me--if I can figure it out I'll try that one. Lynn, your afghans are really beautiful!! I've had my eye on that book "The Big Book of Scrap Afghans" for a long time. I especially liked the first picture you posted--was this afghan pattern from that book?

Lynn,
Those are beautiful ghans! I think I'll join this CAL. I was thinking about doing something with the yarn I have left over from recent projects and just keep it going until I have enough done to put together. I really like the fans and would love to see the butterfly one.

Denny - would love to have you join up with us. The thing about scrap anything is that we will ALWAYS have leftover yarn, especially if we keep on crocheting!
ChainOFools - I know what you mean about the yo yo one, the squares themselves look easy but the joining looks hard. But crochetdude has an easy way to join them that I might use instead. I don't know, I still haven't decided! But welcome to the CAL!!!
Ilene - you are working on one gorgeous afghan with that RH Monet - no rush to choose a pattern for the scrap-ghan, whenever your ready. Hey guess what? I think I may have leftover Money yarn to maybe start with!!!
Lynn - just a question, with all your scraps, is it just leftover yarn you have used from projects, or do you purchase scraps somewhere.
*********************
Ok peeps, this is what scares me about choosing a pattern, any pattern for this. I have horrible color matching sense. I just wrote in another post that I don't know how I ended up a woman because I have absolutely no fashion smarts at all. If I start making squares, how will I know what goes with what, what colors don't belong so close together. If I just choose to do something like a MAM afghan, what if I follow one color with a color that doesn't match???
Those afghans Lynn posted, especially the fan one, which I LOVE btw - seems to have a definite pattern to the color selection.
Oh my, what should I do??? Do you think it matters that much???

Thanks all!
KIKI - The first afghan picture came from Leisure Arts A Year of Afghan's Book 5. Its called Brilliant Contrast and its on page #92. Really easy and fun to make. I think I've made 3 or 4 of these!
KNICKNAC - I just use the leftover yarn I have. I've never purchased any leftovers. It seems that everything I make takes an odd number of ounces so I usually have at least 1/2 skein left over of each color!:lol
As for color selection - just go with your heart. I just pick colors that will compliment each other and try to use some pastels along with brights. I'll post a picture later on today of the scrap afghan I'm working on now. If you think the colors look good together then they will! That's how I picked the colors for the fan afghan. I just pulled whatever colors tickeled my fancy at the time for each fan!:D

I will probably be asking the fine folks here at the 'Ville for help in master color coordination!
I can't wait to see your current afghan.
Another question, since you seem to be the queen here on scrap afghan making :) ... do you try to stick with one type of yarn for a scrap afghan? I have some leftover Caron Simply Soft and some RH SS and also some Bernat Softee - would that be stupid to try to fit that all in one scrap afghan?
Lynn
May 10th, 2006, 09:34 AM
You could probably work all in depending on the pattern of the scrap afghan. I have used RH mixed with Caron SS in almost all scrap afghans I have made and they have worked perfectly together. I don't think those yarns mixed will give you a problem. I wouldn't mix chunky yarns with other yarns but even then depending on the pattern --- it just may work!:)

Knicknac, the trim for my Monet is actually RH Frosty Green. Yellow would have gone really well too but I had the green left over from my 63 Square afghan.
I'm alot like you with not being able to match up colors well but with that I went with my gut.

Oh, definately the fan afghan would be perfect for a wedding present! You could do the fan inserts in solid colors if you wished to or all fans the same in the colors of their bedroom. I also thought the fans would be very striking in white fan inserts with black trim, but don't know if you would want to do that for a wedding present or not. Would depend on their colors in their home.
Thanks KnicKnac! No, the fans are not stuffed - they form that shape with the first few rounds of the hat. In fact before the lacy edge is put on they look like tiny beehives!:lol

Well, I managed to figure out the "flat braid" joining method for the yo-yo afghan, it really wasn't that difficult once I tried it, so I'm starting that pattern :D I can't wait to see how it turns out :lol I posted a picture on my blog of the beginnings: http://byhookorbycrook.blogspot.com/2006/05/yo-yo-mahhhhh.html Lynn, thanks for letting me know the name of that book. Your afghans are fabulous!!
I have yarns of various weights and tried a few yo-yos out of chunky weight and they came out the same size as the worsted, so I think if you are making small motifs you should be able to use different weights with no problems, just keep comparing them to make sure. I've even used fingering weight (two strands held together) with worsted on other scrapghans and it's come out great! The sky is the limit with scrap afghans, and I'm excited to see everyone's progess and finished products!

I would just go with what you think looks good together. Also, I think that if you use the same motif throughout done in all kinds of different colors, then the sameness of the motif will hold the look together.
I've been thinking of doing a scrap ghan with hexagonal motifs in all different colors. But I have so many WIPs right now, that I really need to get some progress on those before I start something else! :eek

I started quilting recently and the first thing i'm supposed to make includes putting together a bunch of squares. The teacher suggested that after we finish all the squares, to lay them out on the ground and then decide which should go next to each other.
Personally, I like repetition and grouping. Take the fan scrapghan for example. I would use X colors to make one fan, where X is a positive integer. I would then make as many more fans as I could with those same X colors. You can then group these fans together in one corner or spread them in some type of a pattern throughout.
Another thing you could do is group colors. So one fan could be all shades of blue and another fan all shades of red/pink etc.
If you REALLY don't trust your judgement, I would suggest looking through crochet books and seeing which color patterns you like, try to figure out what you like about it (rainbow pattern, light to dark, all pastels etc) and use that for your color scheme.
I'm sure you'll do a great job!

I posted this a few days ago in the Lace and Bobbles thread, but since this is technically a scrap afghan, why not also post it here! I have the Afghans for all Seasons, book 1, where this is called Sampler Afghan, but in a different LA book (not sure which one) it's called Lace and Bobbles. The pattern has about 85 or so rows, and I made this through about row 70. I stopped when it got to 50x50, since I wanted it to be toddler sized. I used a bunch of really colorful yarn to make this. The colors are a little washed out (for example, the center is a pretty peach color), but you get the idea of what you can do with scraps!

LOL, I was reading back over the posts for The Crochet Dude and had to step back a few paces. Yes a yellow! There is just a bit of pale yellow all through the veragation in the Monet yarn and to put a pale yellow blouse or Tee under it would really bring out that color in what you've made.
(KnicKnac quote) Yellow? Really? I am so HORRIBLE with matching colors it's not even funny, I don't know how I ended up a woman[/quote]

I had a look at them yo yos. :think How many hundreds of them little fellows do you reckon you would need to make an afghan? While I think the look is good, I feel I may go nutty joining them all together. When I finish my 200 block CAL, and my Gaugan :D I might join you.
I am a bit intimidated by Ilenes Monet as it looks so fabulous! And lyns colourful cretions are fantastic. I do like the look of the first flowery one, and the second fan one.

Good Morning ladies! (and gentlemen if there are any out there today) I was so exhausted after finishing up my Monet, it was like a full day and a half of work at Walmart (I used to work there) that you would have thought I would have taken a full break from it and just watch some TV or something. NOPE!
I started playing around with a motif square from this big book of Afghans by Leisure Arts that I got a few weeks ago. This one is called Old Fashioned Favorite. I thought doing a few of my squares in this would be nice but it looked a bit scarey to me.
http://www.mindspring.com/~ibennett/motif.jpg
My youngest daughter is not real fond of the bright red sticking out like a sore thumb in the middle of all those pastles. This is just a test square to see if I could do this and not loose my mind.
Cupcake, don't be intimidated by the Monet! That was a very easy afghan to do and you could probably have one wipped up for yourself in no time.

Okay, I've been going through my stash, and I think I may make my scrap-ghan out of Lion Brand Homespun. While it has to be the most pain-in-the-butt yarn to work with, I do have tons of skeins, either left over from some project or skeins I picked up at Walmart, meaning to do something with them. I'm tempted to do a striped afghan, using the sideways shell pattern from the Project Linus website, as I figure a) It will be easier to work with homespun if I'm just going through a loop vs. hunting for an invisible stitch, and b) I can always donate it to Project Linus, if I can find colors in my stash that are baby-friendly.

Cupcake, you asked how many yo-yos you need to do for the afghan...the site says 618 for an afghan 48" x 70"...but I suppose you could make it however big or small you wanted, just keep joining them until you get the width, then adding them 'til you get the height you want. I just started making the yo-yos yesterday and really without a whole lot of effort I almost have 100 done, they go really fast! I figured I'd make around 12 or so of each colour to start and then join a few when I have the time. I'm keeping them all in little zip lock baggies for now :lol

It's time to take a break and run away from home! (Don't I wish!) I'm headed out in the morning to my mother in law's which is in the mountains of North Carolina and take her the Monet.
I'm also bringing her one other thing she loves to have around, grandchildren. My husband talked our baby, she's 23 into going up for a visit. My Becky has been very busy lately trying to graduate from college and raise my granddaughter so it's been a bit rough for her to go up and visit Granny.
I redid my original square, it had a funky bump in the second row. (Kept the color scheme the same). Funny thing is that when I redid I didn't need as much yarn the second time, how come? The redone square looks much better and it's also got a paternal twin now. :D
See everyone on Sunday!

Ok, I couldn't be outdone by those of you that have already started on your scrap-ghan, so I started my yo-yo one this morning.
Nevermind that I only did 5 yo-yo's. Shhh, stop your laughing, I only have 613 more to go ... let's see, if I do 5 a day, that means it will only take me 123 days just to finish the yo-yo's, oh my, 4 months, just to do the yo-yo's - I gotta pick up the pace!!!
They are cute little buggers tho. I gotta ask those of you that have chosen to do the yo-yo pattern. Are you weaving in ends as you go? Should I spend the time today weaving in these ends so that it's not a problem later on? Are you going to wait for awhile till you get a bunch and then start putting them together?
So many questions, so little time!

Knicknac--about the ends...I've joined a few and figure the best way to handle it (for me anyway) is to weave the ends in as I go...when I make the yo-yos I leave the end (about 2 inches) and work over it with my joining colour, then when the yo-yos are joined I'm working the ends in right away, otherwise it will surely drive me insane, since weaving in ends is my least favorite thing to do. Do I question the wisdom of choosing such an "ends a'plenty" project? Nah, if it takes a few months, well then it takes a few months...it is a scrapghan, after all :D
Is anyone else who's making this afghan thinking about colour schemes? I thought for this one I would just put colours together arbitrarily, no rules except not join two of the same colours side by side, and not put colours together that look really hideous...I've got about 17 different colour scraps to work with here, so it should be pretty interesting :lol

Kiki - I have a problem with ends being WAY to long to cover over with stitches! I have to work on that and maybe I can hide mine along the way like you are doing. I am not going to bother with a color scheme. I am going to make a bunch of squares first tho to make sure I don't put two of the same too close together.

I'm going to make an afghan called "Stained Glass" from Leisure Arts "Afghans For All Seasons" Book 4. I wouldn't do this afghan for anything if my fiance didn't SWEAR that my soon to be mother-in-law would just adore this particular one! I HATE crocheting with multiple colors. I love the result, but I hate the time I spend changing colors, and I stay in constant fear that I won't weave in all those horrible ends well enough to keep the afghan together! I may have a breakdown before I'm finished. The pattern is easy... it's just all those COLORS!

I got a lot of other things to work on, but thought I would post photos of my finished scrap afghan that I finally FINISHED for my cousin last year. Many of the scraps came from yard sales as I didn't have enough variety of color. It's very hard to show all the color well. Very easy to do--just alternating single and double crochet. Plowed through scraps like nothing else.

It was a yarn with a dye lot, so I figured by making the small motifs you wouldn't be able to see the difference in the dye lots.
Oh wow, that's a cool idea! Can you show us some pictures or links maybe to the patterns your using jmmerholly?

I have finished (just the edging to go) my Around the World quiltghan. I will be starting a scrapghan from Big Book of Scrap Crochet Afghans. It is called Chapeaus. Someone had a picture of it on this thread. I have wanted to make this afghan for a long time. Now is the time:cheer :yes

Hi Sprtsbear - it was me that put up the picture of the chapeau's scrapghan. I still have to sew the squares together to finish it. Just wanted to say I think you'll enjoy making this afghan. Its really fun to see all the little chapeaus come together. Pretty easy pattern too! Post pictures of yours when you get some squares done!

Today was a fun day! I got up this morning and decided I really needed to do some housework before my husband started to hide my crochet. So I drug out my steam cleaner and went after my livingroom carpet!
I have one of those Hoover steamers the size of an upright vacuum cleaner and it really does a good job but it's murder on my back. I had to sit down and rest a bit afterward but I didn't touch any of my squares.
This evening after dinner I did something I was hoping would be fun. I went to a Knit and Crochet club at our public library. The club only meets for an hour every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month. It was a small gathering, only about 8 people. I was the only one crocheting, everyone else was knitting except for the lady that was doing some macrame'. I did manage to get an afghan square done in that time. :yay
Afterward I went to my old job (Walmart) and picked on a few of my buddies and bought a skein of bright yellow RH SS. Not even sure what I'm going to do with it yet! Oh well, that was my day! How was everyone else's?

Well, I finally decided on a pattern for my afghan. It is called Trip Around the World from an afghan magazine I picked up at a supermarket checkout line. I'm going to use what I have on hand right now which are alost of earth tones I have left from an afghan I made my grandson. I have 10 of the little squares done already. They only have 2 rounds in each square. I figure I'll just use up the yarn and see how the squares fit together after I get a bunch of different colors done, and go from there. Happy crocheting!

I know it's kinda late in the game, but is it OK if I join in? I can't decide if I want to make an icon out of the Wavy Chevron pattern from the Encyclopedia of Crochet, or one of the scrapghans from The Ultimate Book of Scrap Afghans (Remember Dad, Threads of Time and Shells from the Sea look really nice). But the Stained Glass Window scrapghan looks great, too! So many choices, how will I make up my mind?:eek

I've already changed my mind over what pattern to do. I did three of these squares last week. http://pandacrochet.8m.com/crossmyheart.html
So I think I'll make this my scrap afghan. I'm trying to use whites and different shades of pink. I was going to donate this to my local Project Linus chapter but today I received an email that the chapter will be closing.:( So I'll have to find another place to donate it to.

Hi Leslie, the great thing about doing a scrap ghan is that we'll always have stash that needs to made into a scrap ghan! :lol Besides, crochet is what we do to take away stress, not add more to our lives!

I went shopping yesterday determined to find the closest JoAnn's and found it only to be disappointed in it. Now I'm not sure if they are in the middle of a remodel or something similar but it was not what I was expecting.
When I go into a craft store here lately I check out the yarn to see if they've got anything good on special and at the books. I've been looking for the 63 More Square book since I picked up the 63 Square afghan book and got hooked into C'ville. I could hardly find anything in this store at all.
Up the road from there is a brand new AC Moore that I had never been into either so I decided to visit there and hit the jackpot. Not only did I find the 63 More book but got some veragated blue yarn that was on sale.
I've been rethinking some of the squares that I wanted to use for my scrap ghan, this is where I've started to loose my mind! I've tossed out the square with the flower and have opted for an afghan square instead. As well as adding in a few granny's that have different colors in them, also found a really nice square in the 63 More book that I'm going to use. (#35)

LOL, good for you Karen on what you've done and I agree with Scarlett! I'm on square #14 of 8 inch squares.
Don't worry if they aren't coming out exactly at 12 inches, just get close to it. When you put your afghan together alot of times the squares come out much better than what you see.

Good Morning Ladies!
I now have 17 squares done for my scrap-ghan and am working on my layout. I have used up nearly every bit of the scrap yarn that I have.
I've found that the bit of light blue that I've been using really should have been tossed out because it's frayed and has loads of knots in it, I've used what I could. (Must have had this one since the '70s)
For my layout I've been using MS Excel, using it like graph paper and importing the pictures and putting them where I think they look good. (Excel lets me move the pictures around, don't have to keep coping and pasting.) So far the afghan is going to be 49 squares and most of the pretty's that I've posted are going to be used in a criss cross pattern. So far, so good!

Ilene, I've been lurking on this CAL, following along for when I get current WIPs/UFOs done and can join. Thank you very much for the Excel idea! It will be very useful to me when working on the quiltghan patterns I have in mind. .....If anyone's got a few suggestions for additional squares, I'm all ears!... If you are still looking for suggestions, I was thinking of some of the neat quilt squares I've seen. The simplest example would be a square divided in half along the diagonal in two colors. Since you've got a cool "X" pattern going with your current design, some of these might fit in. Or a star pattern. Neat ideas at this quilting site (http://www.quilterscache.com/), and this site (http://www.quilt.com/) has many quilt block patterns to be printed out (.gif files) and colored. You could print out designs you liked, color them in, take a pic, and use in your Excel spreadsheet to try out some placement ideas? If you like a block, it shouldn't be too hard to create a granny-style crocheted version of it.....
Can't wait to see what you'll come up with next! Have fun :D

Ladies, I think I'm on the down hill side of my afghan! Yes, the layout I created made it much easier to see what I'm doing and help me think.
My center 9 squares are complete, the remaining 4 are red and white granny's. The row around them are going to be dark blue, light blue and off white afghan squares. I did try last night to make and afghan square like pplcrochets suggested (2 colors on the diagonal) and I just couldn't make it work. I may try it again later because I really liked the idea of it. The outside row will be done in the neat circle square from the 63 more book.

Ilene, that was such a good idea you had about Excel! I would have never thought of that...I would probably have just drawn out a graph on a piece of paper, but your way you can actually visualize where it will go and how it will look, fantastic!
minwife, the 'flat braid' looks more confusing than it actually is, it's on the site with the yo-yo instructions (http://members.aol.com/lffunt/scrapyo.html) along with a different joining technique called the 'net stitch' joining--I chose flat braid because I thought it looked neater, less lacy-looking, and I also thought it seemed a bit easier.
I'm still plugging along on my joining...I almost have 4 rows joined...really I have no idea how many rows I'll need for the length, but I've made mine 20 joined yo-yos wide on the widest row--since the next and alternate row(s) you use one less yo-yo. I measured and in my guage/tension this fits a double bed. Those yo-yos would make a neat pillow cover, too! :D If I have any extra after the afghan I may try it!

I'm having a bit of a set back with my afghan today. The square I'm using from the 63 More book in it's finished mode is 30 stitches across and everything else I've done is 27. Now this doesn't make for very good assembly at all and I didn't realize it until I had put together two entire rows.
I've spent most of the evening taking the 2 rows apart and frogging the one funky row in that square. It's all coming back together much nicer.

Hi, Ilene! Way to go on your afghan - you're over the hump!
Hey, I found out where that expression originated. In the first half of the 20th century (for all I know, even now), freight train yards were routinely built with a gradient up which a switching engine would push freight cars to be sorted into different trains/destinations. Cresting the top of the "hump", each car then rolled free down the hill under gravity, and was sorted onto the proper set of tracks through a series of switches. The cars were speed-controlled and braked to a stop by "disc brakes" built into the track sections. So, before the cars crested the top of the hump, they had to be pushed up the hill, but after they were over the hump, they coasted downhill. Just passing on what my 8yr old steam train buff taught me :lol
Speaking of the train buff, he wants the kittens Right Now, but we need to wait at least until July. You mentioned that 2 are double the trouble, and maybe that's how it will turn out, but we're hoping that 2 will keep each other occupied and out of the trouble a bored kitten might find. No way a human can keep up with the energy/activity level of a kitten! (especially this one, who spends a lot of time with a keyboard/crochet hook/book). and I promise pics as soon as our furbabies are on board!

Looks like everyone here has taken a long weekend off from crocheting. I got left home alone all weekend, even deserted!
My husband has been out of town on business for over a week and won't be back til Saturday and my daughter ran off with the grandbaby to housesit. So I crocheted all weekend and now I'm paying for it.
I have Arthritis in both of my hands, just behind the thumbs. Must be do to how I have to hold what I'm working on right now.
The good news is that I'm 4 squares and 1 row away from being finished with my scrap-ghan.

I finished my afghan yesterday. Hurray for me!:cheer I finally have a digital camera but don't know how to use it yet. I didn't want to try to read the instructions for it until I had an ample supply of chocolate with me. Then I'll have to find out how to get that picture out of the camera and on to this website. It sounds too complicted for my little brain to handle. But I promise I'll try. I used a little of Caron's Simply Soft yarn in only one square of the afghan. My seven year old daughter, Ingrid, was picking out her favorite square. As soon as she touched that one, she said "That's it." She wants me to buy only Simply Soft now.

Congradulations Karin for completing your afghan. I had the feeling you where going to beat me in finishing!:cheer Please take your time in learning your camera, you will have so much fun with it and not just for taking pictures of your projects either, lol. I can't wait to see what you've done.
Mine should be finished maybe by tomorrow, I had to slow down abit because of my hands. They don't feel so bad today.

I have 1 1/2 strips done on my MAM. I used yellow on the first one and the second I have a teal color I'm using. I'm going to dig for some red for the next strip. Starting next week I'll have lots of time to crochet since the business I work for is closing.

I finished my afghan this evening around 10. My daughter and I have both named this my Pug-ghan we we think it's close to Pug-ugly. (I can get away with saying that cause I own a pug, he's so ugly he's pretty.)

I'm going to have to wait a few days before I start on anything else, had to break out my brace for my left hand.

That is so far from pug-ugly!!! I think you did a most awesome job! What method did you use to join the squares? Is it that method from the Dude?
WOW - you are one dedicated crocheter!!!

knicknac, I just did a simple whip stitch in the back loops for joining and the edging is 2 rows of single crochet.

Your afgah is great! I love the squares that look like plates. I know what you mean about your hands hurting, put it is beautiful and I'm sure that somehow the effort is kinda worth the pain. Take a much deserved rest.

Thank you Denny. I slept with my brace on my left arm all night and this morning my thumb was a bit swollen so I think I'd better take a break for a bit. The square I think you're talking about is #35 from the 63 More Square book. Just doing that one in 2 different colors set off the circle in it.
I have 2 other projects in the works (mostly in my head for now) another afghan and socks for everyone in the family for Christmas. Let's see now long I can sit still!:devil

Ilene, your afghan looks great!! :clap My favorite are the 'circle-squares', they really catch the eye :)
I've been bad :blush I haven't worked on my yo-yo's for a while because it's been so darned hot! I made up about 250 and started joining them, but I'm still stuck on row 3...hopefully it will cool down some here and I can continue.

I know what you mean about hot, here in North Carolina it had been in the 90's most of this last week. Sometimes I forget that the North can get hot to, I lived in Maine for 2 years.

Hot? Don't I know it!!! Afghan's are definitely things to work on when it's cold!
Kiki, could you post a picture of what you have already? I would love to see what you got so far. I am so afraid to start stringing mine together because of the color combinations, are you running into that?

For you KnicKnac, here is a pic of what I have so far:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/Kayncee/scraptacular.jpg
This is not the greatest picture (dang digital!) Some of the colours aren't picking up, like a grape/purple and chocolate brown, and the reds are looking really ewww, plus there's only one white, but the aran colour and a light blue are reading as white-ish...but this is the best I could do. The main colour is black, and I have 17 different coloured yo-yos, which I'm keep in a certain order, but alternate for the different rows, like for the second row I started with the 10th coloured yo-yo in from the first row, but kept the same order of colours as the first row...does that make sense? There are 20 across and I have no idea how many rows I'll need. It looks smallish in the picture but does fit a double bed. So far I like it. :D I figured it was probably a good idea to make up a few of every colour I planned to use and then start joining, then that way I wouldn't be introducing a new colour half way in or whatever.
As far as the weather goes, so far today it's downright cold at 18 Celcius (65 F), but last week we were averaging 32-35 C (90-95 F), and with the humidex it was actually more like 44 C (which is 112 stifling degrees fahrenheit!) :yuck :hot

Oh Kiki, that is turning out so nice! I have some dark blue scraps, I was worried what they would look like on there with the black border. With the darker colors, do you think they turn out ok?
Thanks for the pic!

KnicKnac,
Thanks for the compliment! :) As far as darker colours go, I think whatever makes you happy works, after all it is your afghan. When I was picking colours for mine, I just sort of reached into my stash bags and whatever I came out with I said "yeah, that'll work." The only colour I didn't use was a really dark navy blue, because it looked almost like the black I was joining with.

I think I am now ready to tag along with this CAL. I Started a scrap gahn, last night. It is from Leisure arts. Afghans for all Seasons. This pattern was the reason that I got this book! But at the time I was just relearning how to crochet and it was a litte advanced for me. Now I have the stash and the skills to complet it. (i hope) hehe. I have another gahn that is a WIP, so this one is my time off prog..

Okay ladies, looks like I'm still in on this one. While I was doing my Pug ghan I started playing around with other scrap yarn that I had left over from my DD's 63 square afghan using a layout similar to the one that Denny had posted earlier. (I really loved what she had done!):manyheart I've been going to a Knit and Crochet Club here in town where I live and the lady that's heading up the club brought me some of her scrap that will go nicely with what I'm doing. Need to do another round before I post a pic.

I'm going to join this CAL in a few weeks. :D
I'm still working on one more graphghan that I want to enter into the State Fair.
By that time, I should have enough odd lots to start my scrapghan.
I already have my afghan picked out. I don't think I can legally show a picture of it. However, it was the Annie's Attic pattern of the day for Feb. 4, 2006. It's called "Mended Hearts," and it's also sorta a graphghan. It's squares of multicolored hearts. Really pretty. It's also in Annie's "101 Easy Scrap Crochet Projects."
