Here's a sock pattern that looks pretty easy: http://members.aol.com/Sbaycgoa/patsock.htm It's just a basic sock; nothing fancy :-)

I recommend KnitPicks for sock yarn (ThUD), with a E hook. Unless you only plan on wearing as slippers and never in shoes, I recommend you use some sock yarn, and I prefer cotton with a nylon blend (for stretchy!).

I just used this pattern to make a pair of socks. I really like them.
