Is anyone interested in joining me for a tablecloth along? I started a table cloth when I was first married 8 years ago and I am only about 1/4 the way done and I haven't touched it in years. I really need to get to working on it but I need some enthusiam and motivation.
I have made a button for this CAL. You are free to use it on your blog or website. Thanks.

Yes!!! I am so in. Is there a limit to how many "alongs" we can participate in? LoL
Mine will be slow-going, also, but I told my hubby when I picked up my first crochet hook 2 years ago, that I would make a tablecloth. :blush

Ga Rebel~Mine is in thread....which is why its only 1/4 done. You think,"oh it should go fast...piece of cake...WRONG!!!
Stacy25~ummm...I sure hope there isn't a limit...have you seen my sig line lately???
As far as how long this takes, I am guessing for mine at least a year. I doubt it would get done sooner in fact it may take longer but I need some motivation to keep me going.
I was thinking of doing at least one motif a week. Making a goal of some sort of how much you want to get done each week, then we could encourage each other with our goals.

Ooh, this is tempting. I've been kicking around the idea of making a tablecloth for awhile.
I've got this picture of a filet crochet one in my head that says "How can you have pudding if you don't eat your meat?"
I have a few things I need to finish up before I can join in good conscience, but when I do... I'm in! :hook

Okay, count me in. I'll do one in thread too. I haven't worked much in thread. I think I've only made two things with it before. We have a huge dining room table but I was thinking of doing a tablecloth for the coffee table in the living room. Its a big table too. But at least it wouldn't be so overwhelming. I'll have to start lookiing for a pattern.

I looked through my crochet patterns last night and can't find one tablecloth pattern. I looked (briefly) on the internet for a free pattern but can't decide. Does anyone have a favorite free pattern they can recommend? Nothing too complicated please. Thanks everyone.

I am sorry but I haven't looked for tablecloth patterns. The one I am using was out of a book I checked out of the library 8 years ago...I wanted to make this tablecloth cause I was a newly wed...well, after my two weeks were up, I kind of realized that it wasn't going to get done anytime soon so I copied the page off and worked on it a bit off and on for a year...then haven't touched it.
Maybe you could check out your local library for a pattern?? Are you looking for something like a large doily, or filet or something with motifs?

I think I would prefer to do a table cloth in one piece so that I don't have to put all the squares together at the end. But I guess I am open to any suggestions. Good idea about the library. I think I'll surf my way over to their website now and see if I can find anything good. Unfortunately, one thing I've noticed about our library is that they have a pretty good selection of knitting books but very few crochet ones. Thats not fair!!:angry
Lavelle26
May 19th, 2006, 11:48 AM
Well, the one I found was a better homes and garden book...from a long time ago. My motifs are joined as you are crocheting them, so you don't have to wait til then end but it is a lot of end weaving.:eek I'll post a pic of it in a minute if you like.

I'm going to use Lustersheen, as I have a skein leftover from a summer scarf idea that I never used. I figure it's smaller than regular yarn, yet not so thin that it will drive me batty. :flying I haven't found any motifs that I like, though. So I'm wondering how a "sampler square" type thing would end up?

I am sitting here, extremely impatiently I might add, waiting for the books I reserved at the library to come in. They actually had two books that looked promising for a tablecloth pattern. But the wait is killing me. I just want to jump right in. Its not like I don't have any other crocheting to do (:blush ).

Well, I didn't do a motif for last week since we started in the middle of the week. So, now I just have to do mine for this week. I am working on some bookmarks right now for the bookmark swap so maybe tomorrow night I can get one motif done. I am really looking forward to getting this tablecloth done one motif at a time. Thank you all for joining me in this CAL as I really need the motivation to complete this project. Hubby will be so proud of me when I finish.

Hi!
I am making a tablecloth now, and I need encouragement to finish it. I use Peaches and cream yarn in all those new bright colors. I do not have a pattern for it. I call the tablecloth "crazy" because it is made of all different color granny squares, and they are different sizes, too. The inspiration for the tablecloth was a blanket from a knitting magazine, they had differnt sized and colored squares, too. I made the main part of the tablecloth, and now I am making the border. The main part is all squares, and the border is simple lace ( 5 chains, stitch in the next 5-ch space), and it is also in different colors. You could see it on my blog http://gannka.blogspot.com/ (http://gannka.blogspot.com/). I am about half-done with the border.
I am looking forward to finishing the tablecloth, and to hearing about how you are working on yours.

Hi Anna!! Its nice to meet another Anna. Sure you can join us. I love your tablecloth. It is very colorful. And the good thing for you is that you are almost done with it so you will most likely beat all of us. Some of us haven't started yet. I am aboud 1/4 done with mine. Started 8 years ago when I was first married and haven't touched it in years. I am planning on doing a motif each week. Still need to do one for this week.

Nice to meet you, Anna! Thank you!
This is a good goal to make one motif a week. How big are the motifs? Are you joining them as you go, or you will join them later when you are done with all of them? I really hate to join, so for my tablecloth I joined squares with the last row of each square, so no sewing at the end!
I bet your tablecloth will be very pretty when you are all done. I love thread, just do not have patience for it.

Very pretty!
I've decided on a motif and I'm going with Lustersheen in Mulberry, and a 3.75 hook. I've already made 4 motifs, so I'm set for the week. :hook I have so many WIP's (I'm sure you all can relate :yarn ) so I'm setting days to work on certain things and I think my tablecloth day will be Wednesday. I will make as many motifs as I can on that day- I'm hoping 6 or 7. :manyheart

Gannka, Yes, I am joining as I go. It is little star type shapes and the last two points I make, I crochet it to two points on the previous motif. Then, once these are done, I go back in and fill in the holes in the same manner. I will post a pic of my progress tonight.
I haven't done my motif this week yet. Too busy designing some baby boy overalls and working on some bookmarks for the bookmark swap. I will do it this week though. I WILL!!! I promise.:D (o my gosh:eek ...its already Thursday afternoon...I better get cracking so I can keep that promise!!)

Stacy, that sounds gorgeous in Mulberry. I love lustersheen. I had never thought of doing a tablecloth in anything but thread until I started this CAL. Learn something new everyday, eh? I can't wait to see what it looks like. (and my next tablecloth might just be in lustersheen...:lol )

Michele, your tablecloth is just beautiful! Your family will really appreciate your hardwork. I went to the library today to pick up one of the books I had put a hold on. It only had one tablecloth in it. It was a round one and I'm looking for a square. I did find about six other projects that I liked in that book. So now my mental crochet to-do list has grown ever longer. I'm going to try to be patient and wait until the library books come in.

Karin, did you try to search for free patterns? Or for motifs which you could combine for tablecloth? I will go ahead and search for couple of links for you:

I couldn't wait any longer for the library books to come in. Over the last few days, I've been looking at the free tablecloth patterns on the internet. I had a few requirements, it had to be square, nothing too lacey, and it had to be for an advanced beginner in thread. Even though I've crocheted for over 25 years, I've only done two thread projects. I found the pattern I'm going to do over at crochet pattern central (got to love that website). Its called Sweet Clover. I went to Joann's this morning and bought two balls of thread. The pattern called for size 30 thread and I was going to buy that but when I looked and saw how thin the thread was I panicked. That just looked a little too scarey for me. So I chickened out and bought size 10 thread. The thread is a burgundy color because I'm making the tablecloth to cover our large square coffee table in the living room. My husband has the living room done in kind of a lodge look (burgundys, dark greens, navys). I'm hoping to start a motif today. Have to help out at the church tonight and I'm sure by the time I get home I'll just want to get my girls into bed and go to sleep myself. But boy am I excited to get started. Lets hope the excitement holds over the whole course of making this tablecloth.

May 27th, 2006, 04:58 PM
Okay, I have finally gotten around to posting a pic of my tablecloth. Please ignore the color changes and size changes. This was started as my second thread project ever. (years ago I might add) I had made a doily as my first project and thought it was so easy that I wanted todo something bigger and better. Well, I defintely got bigger. I got this pattern and then proceeded to buy a ball of thread. Well, I quickly ran out of that ball of thread so I bought an other one. Then, I moved and didn't touch the table cloth for a long time. Well, I picked it back up and had to buy more thread. I didn't know as much as I do now about types of thread and dye lots and all that jazz.
So, here is my work of love. It won't be the prettiest tablecloth you have ever seen but I will have it done and that is my goal. I will be proud of it nonetheless.

Eveing ladies..
Wel i finelly picked out a pattern :woo after going through tons of them and trying out a few..i settled on one called Harvest swirles..it is really pretty and more full then most..i wanted one that wasnt to lacy allso and i wanted it to have more weight to it..my one other requirerment was how it went together and how the thread ends would be hidden(dont want dangling ends after a wash :no )..it called for size 20 thread but im using a size 3 and a 0(2.55mm)hook this will add even more weight.
Now to just make sure i do a few a week :lol.
Michele and Anna..they are stunning..i hope mine will look half as good.

I completed my second motif this morning. I can't believe how much better my second one looks as compared to my first one. The stitches are less loopy and closer together. I really should frog the first one but the motifs are joined as you go and so I would have to frog both of them. There is NO WAY I'm going to do that. I'll just learn to live with that first one. You know put a plant or something over top that one.:blush

A plant would work.:D I understand your not wanting to frog. My tablecloth is in so many different shades of "ecru" its not funny. I have learned so much from this, my first table cloth and it will be proudly shown on my table (if ever I get it done) even if my gauge is different for each motif. I only have 5 done but they are turning out very large since I'm using Lustersheen instead of thread. That's ok...just means I don't have to do as many. :lol The pattern is joined as I go, and I already have 3 of them joined. Took a pic yesterday but haven't downloaded them yet...as soon as I do, I will post one. I'm very happy with how it's turning out. :manyheart

Where was this CAL three or four months ago when my mom called asking me to crochet her a tablecloth for her church? I'm not finished yet, so I guess I can still join.
I'm using the Cathedral Window Tablecloth patter,n http://www.angelfire.com/folk/celtwich/Cathedral.html I'm using Aunt Lydia's shimmer in white, but it has been discontinued. I'm hoping to squeeze by and finish the motifs in what I have, and make the edging in something else. If I can't, well, I've got a substitution and they'll just have to put that part in the back or something. I've got 10 squares the go plus the edging. I'm also thinking of putting a backing on it, it looks so good when I spread it out on my marroon comforter.

Welcome BlondieeAggiee. You are more than welcome to join in at anytime. I started my tablecloth 8 years ago but lost the motivation since then so that is my purpose in this CAL. To have the motivation to finish it.

I am very sorry to announce that while I had very good intentions, that were very high and well placed, I have failed this past week to even look upon my tablecloth.:blush I can assure you though, that things will slow down for me a bit this week and I will try to get two motifs done. Yes, TWO!!!:D

thats ok Anna I to have not done anything on mine this week with wanting to get the dress done for you and my 2 exchanges and the squares for another person I had to look at my priorities and felt the the table cloth can go on hold for a few need to keep my promises to others first thats the way I am.

Shaylen,
I think it looks wonderful. Are you whip stitching or crocheting them together? I think the pattern says to crochet them, but I thought that would make them look bulky. I like yours- the join frames each motif. Thanks for showing the photo!

June 14th, 2006, 09:25 AM
Wow Shaylen, that's looking real good.
I've finished four more blocks for my tablecloth. I've got one more of those to attach, then I'm going to measure to see how much more I've got to go. I'm guessing I've got 7 more squares to make.
Question...how do you determine how much "overhang" to make? The table I'm crocheting this for is 51 inches long, 21.5 inches wide, and 32.5 inches tall.

How many times should I click on this face??:eek :eek :eek :eek Anna, you're done. Shaylene, you have 54 done. I have 3 done. One is too big. One I twisted a chain putting it together. I am not taking either one out. An EXTRA BIG plant will go there. I am really going to have to get myself going here. Now is the perfect time to be crocheting with thread. My daughters were in the swimming pool yesterday and I sat in the shade and crocheted a scarf. It was 108 degrees and I was sweating buckets just sitting. I couldn't stand the yarn scarf laying in my lap. I need to do lighttweight things.

Yes, Shaylen, I agree with Karin...54???:eek :eek :eek Are we having a race??? Cause gosh, I would be last place I think. (and I started mine 8 years ago :lol )
No, really, your tablecloth is beautiful. I never knew that you made circles and they swirled as you joined them. How clever!!!! I may attempt that as my next table cloth knowing that. Yours is very beautiful. Great job!!
And Yes, I have the feeling we will be here a while, which is why I thought this would be a good CAL. :hook

Hey everyone!!! I THOUGHT of my table cloth today. And I even took it with me to work on...does that count??? I ended up knitting...:eek what???:eek Yes...Knitting. I found some clover bamboo knitting needles that I just HAD to buy and try out. (I was actually looking for some clover soft touch crochet hooks but they didn't have any)
So, I am wondering if THINKING about the tablecloth counts?

WoooHooo!!! :woo :jumpyay :woo I DID IT!!!! I really did it!!! I got out my tablecloth today and I worked on it. Not only did I catch up (one motif a week) but I think I am way ahead of my goal. I did 23 fill-in motifs today. I am now officially 32% done with this tablecloth. Yay!!!!
I have been thinking about it (lots of time to think with these mindless fill-in motifs) and I don't think that I can do only 1 motif a week...the motifs I have done today, if I had done one a week would have taken me 23 weeks!!!! :eek That would mean this tablecloth would take me about 4 1/2 years to complete. :no No way!!! So, I have come up with a better plan. I will use WIP Wednesday as my tablecloth day and work as hard as I can to get as much done as possible on that day.
So, here is what my tablecloth looks like so far.
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d51/Sonata926/Crochet%20Items/2904resized.jpg
And here is a picture to show you how far it comes on the table and how much left I have to do.

Yes, it has been pretty quiet. I am sorry for not posting more often, but alas, I have not had time to work on my tablecloth every week as I had planned. We moved about two weeks ago and I am now sitting in a hotel room for another three weeks until we can move into our new house. I brought my tablecloth along and hope that I can devote at least one day a week to it.
