This if my first attempt at crocheting clothing that has to fit. I can do scarves and hats, but I was very nervous about making a garment. I picked Melissa Leapman's Dainty Mesh Vest from Crochet with Style because I wouldn't have to worry about sleeves. I used Red Heart Luster Sheen in medium blue with E and D hooks.
I did about six rows on the back an decided it would be way too big, but I continued.:(
On the front I decided it would be way too small, but I continued.:no
While I think the shoulders are a bit broader than I'd like, I was pleased enough to wear it to work today. :)I swore I would not say I made it to see what kind of remarks I got. I received two unsolicited comments of "nice outfit" or something similar. Next time I wear it I will tell people I made it.
I am not worried about telling my Crochetville friends I made it...I know you all will be kind!

It looks great. You definitely should tell everyone you made it, but I totally understand not wanting to.:blush
It's very classy and the buttons are a perfect match. :manyheart

I really like it! You did a very good job for your first clothing item. I am currently on my first clothing item for myself (well technically I made a poncho before, but...), and it is very nerve wracking! I already frogged it about four times to get it just right. (It's a shrug.) So I know what you mean about not knowing what it'll turn out like...
But you did a good job, and it looks great!! :cheer :cheer :cheer

Looks great! Maybe I'll get brave and try something similar. I made several vests in the 70's and wore them A LOT! Since I've picked up my hook in this decade, I haven't made anything to wear. Now you have inspired me! Your mesh vest looks very nice on you.

I think you did great. It looks professional. I really like. I know what you mean about people that aren't crafty. Sometimes they are rude, sometimes they are nice, but sometimes they are VERY RUDE!
Glad you shared with all of us.....We are kind!:manyheart :hug

Your vest is beautiful! I love that shade of blue, and it looks really nice with the white blouse and denim skirt. I've not had the problem of having people say something rude when I tell them I crocheted something, although I understand from others here that some people really are that mean. Usually whenever I tell someone I made something, I'm so wildly enthusiastic about it, I don't think they have the heart to tell me anything mean (at least no one ever has to my face).
I can't imagine anyone telling you anything bad about your beautiful blue vest, Artemis, so the next time I'd tell everyone! :hook
And if someone does say anything negative.....:kick

Thanks for all the nice comments, ladies. I didn't want to tell the people at work I made it because then I can't tell if the comments are truthful. You know, "You made it? Wow, I can't believe it. It's really nice." Was it "really nice" before they knew I made it? My friends would be kind, but truth was what I wanted.

Artemis, your vest looks wonderful! I made that same one in an apple green and I agree that the shoulders are a little wide on the pattern. I like yours much better than mine. That blue seems to be your color (although I can't see your eyes!).
Sizing is always touch and go. Even if you crochet to the exact gauge, you still have other variables to consider like the potential stretch of the yarn. I've found that I do much better if I have extensive measurements on hand. I measure everything...the width of the shoulder, the armhole depth and width, the depth of the neckline, the width across the front above the bust, etc. Armed with these measurements, I can usually make a wearable that actually fits!:lol

That is so pretty! I don't think anyone will suspect you made it until you tell them because it is that nice! Wear it with pride for a great job you did crocheting it. :manyheart
