Hi Tina! From another Tina, and a beginner! Funny you should ask; I was searching for a pattern for some type of foot attire myself last night. I have some really soft yarn that I'm dying to give it a try with. I'd be in...

Oh, good grief, I have a pair of socks I started last Memorial Day--and I haven't touched them since! I'm in, but man, I'll be way behind because there are a number of gifts I need to get done ASAP. I'm doing the first pair of socks in this book. (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1564774945/qid=1147967684/sr=1-27/ref=sr_1_27/103-9121390-6728659?s=books&v=glance&n=283155)

Oh I can help with that! When you go into the advanced posting screen, there's an icon that looks like a globe with a chain on it. Highlight a string of text in your post, then click that button, and you can put in the http address to do that. :D

Okay, thanks. The yarn I want to use comes in 1.75 oz and I have 2, but it's on sale for $2/skein so if I run out, I'll just grab some more. It has been there for a couple of weeks at the same price.

I just might join along too. I'm still new to socks. I did make my first pair very recently. I love them. I want more crocheted socks!
I was considering using this pattern here (http://members.aol.com/Sbaycgoa/patsock.htm) or was the thought for us all to use the same pattern?
I needed 100grams-400 plus yards of my Sockotta Yarn. So if you you are getting 50gram skeins you will likely need 2 skeins which is enough to make ankle socks.

I just bought a skein of variegated baby-weight (I guess that's sport-weight) yarn on clearance from Joann's and have been wanting to try my first pair of socks with it.
But I'm not sure if 100% acrylic is good for socks, since it doesn't absorb moisture??? I guess I'll check out Knitpicks' sock yarn like someone suggested.
Anyway, I would like to join. :)

I'd love to try some socks! I will admit I've been very intimidated to try...I've crocheted for many years but only in the last couple of years have I branched out from granny squares and basic stitches to more advanced patterns for wearables, etc.
Silly question...do you actually have to use 'sock yarn' to make socks? I've seen postings where people used baby/fingering weight yarn as well...
Is everyone going to follow the same pattern?

Hey Lynn, that's Moda Dea Sassy isn't it? It's looking great! I'm working on the first sock pattern in the Crocheting Socks book. But the yarn is W-I-L-D and U-G-L-Y. Lol! Normally what you need to do is right click on the image and choose "save as". Save it somewhere on your computer. Then upload it to your website or a special image host like photobucket.com. Finally you add a little bit of code to your blog or webpage.
If you can't figure that out, I will allow direct linking to my photobucket for this button. So you can also paste this code directly onto your site:

How are everyone's socks working up? I'm doing this CAL and as a CAL for Crochet Guild of America. So I'm using this toe-up sock pattern (http://members.aol.com/Sbaycgoa/patsock.htm) and made the guage swatch yesterday.
I plan on keeping a record of my progress, the good, the bad and the ugly;) on my blog.
Someone asked about the this toe up pattern (http://www.graftonfibers.com/socks.htm) my blog? Was it someone here on C'ville? She wanted some tips on starting the heal. I updated my blog with what I remembered doing so you have questions on the grafton fibers toe up sock pattern you should be able to find it here. I was thinking of doing the 'vee socks for me socks' on the cpc site. Has anyone done these before? I am a total newbie to the wonderful world of socks, although I've had ppl ask me to make them some before, I've always been a little scared I wouldn't be able to follow a pattern.

My son has been wanting for me to make him socks. i've never done them before. what type of yarn do i use? can it be cheapish yarn? money is tight right now. Also, it should be a pattern where i can work a picture into it, if at all possible. I went to hot topic, and bought a cool pair of socks for myself, they're long and have stars up on side, and a skull onthe top edge. they go to my knees. So, now he wants socks with skulls on them........i've got a few graphs............just need an easy sock pattern. his feet are about a boys size 3 or so. 2 1/2, or 3.
anyone have ideas?

Butterfly,
Have you tried the CPC site (http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/)? There are all sorts of free patterns on there...or you could also try the sock thread on this forum...I'm sure there are lots of people who can help :D I'm attempting my first pair and thought of using some extra baby yarn I had...you can also use sock yarn, which is similar weight, or so I'm told. I'm not an expert on what type of yarns to use, but I don't think there are any hard and fast rules.
Hope this helps :)

Maybe the easiest to do would be this pattern here (http://www.graftonfibers.com/socks.htm).
If you kept using sc or sc and dc depending on how plan on doing the skull?
You ideally want sock yarn if you want to wear them in your shoes. There are few places on line that sell inexpensive sock yarn : knit picks and elann (just google for them.) You will need about 200yards of sock yarn for a pair of adult socks. (you will likely get by with much less for a kids socks)
If he would be happy to wear them as slipper socks you could definitely use a cheaper softer yarn. You may need to adjust the pattern.

I have been bad. I just started today. But the toe is coming along well, LOL! First I had to find just the right yarn. Then I just had to work on my Homespun shawl. I'm still so new and it has just been such a rewarding project (works up so fast). But I'm in progress now. :)
I'm using this pattern

with this yarn
Lion Brand, Wool-Ease (http://www.lionbrand.com/yarns/woolease.htm). Color: Autumn.
Found it on sale for $2.98.
Not exactly the soft wonderful yarn I'd had in mind at first, but this skein is just screaming "I am socks!" at me, and it IS just my first pair so some soft ones will be 2nd. ;)

Hey all!
I hope everyone's socks are coming along nicely! I decided to try my first pair out of some extra baby yarn I had in my stash...I was going to go and buy some funky sock yarn, but kept having to do other stuff...I hate it when my life gets in the way of my crocheting! :laughroll Plus I wasn't too sure I'd be able to follow the pattern, so I figured I'd try a 'prototype' in some yarn I probably won't be using for anything else...not sure why I was so hesitant, as I didn't have any problems at all! Anyway, I tried the 'vee socks' pattern on the cpc site and here is the result:
http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/Kayncee/socks.jpg
My darling and helpful husband said they look "like giant baby booties" :lol but I suppose since they are made out of pastel yellow baby yarn that could be why he said that...in any case they are wonderfully soft and nice and cozy. Bring on the sock yarn! I can see myself making lots of socks over the summer! Thanks for looking! :D

Hi, I would like to join this crochet-along. I recently completed my first pair using the toe-up south bay pattern with modified heel. I am now on my second pair - toe up in HDC with SC short row heel, and front post, back post DC ribbing - now on second sock.
I am using a cheapish yarn (st ives sunbeam), but have some Lorna's Laces yarn in Vera colourway for my next pair.

Lynn,
I can understand your frustration with the yarn, I had some homespun that did the same thing but I just ended up cutting out the bad parts and rejoining. I've seen others on this forum have luck with contacting the yarn companies, some even send free skeins as Butterfly_girl said. I would definitely try that, the worst they can do is nothing.

Good Morning ladies, I would also like to join the CAL!
Just for the fun of it I had started on a sock a few weeks ago from the "Learn to Crochet Socks" book I found. Got the cuff and ankle done and ran into a bit of trouble with the heel so I put it down.
Yesterday I found the V-sock pattern that ChainoFools did and I thought I was doing pretty good until I put it to my size 6 foot! I'm using RH worsted weight with an E hook and the toe is way too big. Oh well, I'll try again later today.

Hi Ilene and welcome to the CAL!
Your first sock looks great!! I used baby yarn for mine, which is similar to sock weight, so it was pretty much to the pattern specs. I didn't check tension/gauge but kept fitting it on my foot as I progressed to see if it fit or not. :lol
I went out yesterday and happened upon some sock yarn and thought I'd pick some up...the cheapest I could find was almost $6 for a 50 gram ball...at 2 balls per pair I thought, "that's a pretty pricey pair of socks!" I saw one skein, can't remember the brand, that was almost $16 :eek ...I'd dragged DH with me and he gave me a look that said "don't even think of buying that stuff!" :lol Has anyone else run into this problem with sock yarn?
Ilene
June 3, 2006, 09:03 AM
ChainOFools - Thank you for the Welcome! The pattern for my completed sock called for Worsted Weight and it fit pretty good even though it looked big.
I do want to try the V-sock again but hadn't checked out the prices on the sock yarn here. If it's too pricey I'll go with baby yarn. I'd like to make a bunch of socks as Christmas presants this year.

ChainOFools, I don't think my WM carries sock yarn or at least I didn't see any when I went in this afternoon. So I picked up a skein of white baby yarn for my next attempt at the V-sock. (It was 2.97 for 5 oz.)
My other sock now has a mate, yeee haaa! They also have a home! My youngest daughter's friend, Natalie wants them. She wares some pretty unusual socks and loved the one I had finished.

Ilene, those are some funky socks! :clap I couldn't find sock yarn at Wal-mart either, or at Michaels...I happened to be at the LYS and found it, but like I said, a bit expensive. The only other place I've seen it is Mary Maxim online, but again pretty pricey at $7-14 for a 50 g skein. I did see some at around $4, which isn't too bad.

Hi. When I make toe up socks I work with 45 stitches (sock yarn). My gauge is 6 stitches per inch and foot circumference is 9 inches, so that would make 54 stitches, but I like my sock to fit snugly, so I use the stretched gauge (5 stitches per inch) instead. This gives a sock that fits snugly around the foot and ankle without being too tight. I work my sock in HDC though, which is slightly more stretchy, so this might make a difference.

June 6, 2006, 09:43 PM
Success! I redid my v-sock using my D hook and going for the size 6 and they actually fit me now.
http://www.mindspring.com/~ibennett/v-socks.jpg
I had run into some problems on this redo, my hook kept snagging the yarn and I had to go real slow in order to do the stitches till I found out the end of the hook had a bur on it. I had read in another thread somewhere where someone had a similar problem and it was suggested to use an emory board to file down the bur. It worked like a charm and I was able to go at my usual break neck speed again.
P.S. Milo had to share the chair again.

Ilene,
Your socks look fab!! :clap Did you use baby wool on those ones? Did you like the Vee pattern better than the other you had tried or was it about the same? I want to try the 'in your shoes ankle socks' pattern on crochet me, it looks like it would be relatively easy.
I found a real score today at my LYS--a bin half full of Bernat Sox yarn in various colours and variegateds, which the clerk told me has been discontinued, and they were all on sale for $1 a skein! I cleaned them out! :blush Since the best price I've found around these parts is $4 a skein on sale, that's a real bargoon. :lol Now I'll be making socks all summer. :hook

I used the Bernat Baby Acrylic, it was $2.97 for a 5oz skein. I still have less than a half a skein left of it too. I really did like working that pattern better than my first pair. It was less taxing on my left hand. I may try to modify the pattern a bit for a different pair, maybe try either just a single crochet or just the half double all the way around. I'll keep the In Your Shoe sock pattern in mind.
You really did luck out on your find, good for you!!!!:yay

I cleaned them out! :blush Since the best price I've found around these parts is $4 a skein on sale, that's a real bargoon. :lol Now I'll be making socks all summer. :hook

hey all! I'm a newbie to crochetville and to CAL so forgive me if this post is in wrong place.
Just rekindling my enjoyment of crochet and finishing up a shawl, but really, really want to learn socks. Is there a good online pattern????
Will join this CAL if I can find an easy pattern for my first try!
looking forward to the fun and fellowship!!

Hi and Welcome Doreen!
One of the best places to get free patterns is on the Crochet Pattern Central web site. That is where me and ChainOFools got the pattern for our V-Socks. It was a pretty easy pattern and worked up quickly for me. There is also the Feet Need Socks CAL that on their beginning threads listed free sock patterns.
Again, Welcome and have fun.

Ladies, don't miss me too much. I'm going to see my daugther in Virginia for a few days. Her husband hasn't been well so me and DH are going up to check on them and my 81 year old dad.
Some good news, I've been working on my socks with the Bernart baby yarn and it looks like I'll be getting 2 pair of socks out of 5 oz. I'll have pictures when I get back.

Ilene,
Hope things go well for you on your trip :) You are inspiring with your sock making! :D
Doreen,
If you are looking for sock patterns still, you can try the thread for the feet need socks here (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=536), as Ilene said, the first post by Donna has a bunch of pattern links to try out. The Vee socks pattern can be found here (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=536). I have to agree with Ilene, this one worked up quite fast and was relatively easy :D

Just wanted to show you the progress of my socks. I think this is about the same place I frogged the last pair. Hopefully these will come out better! I hope to work more on it this weekend, but it's a busy one, so, we'll see. I'll post a pic when its done.

I'm ready to work on the cuff of my socks.
You can see my progress here (http://sammimagfiberstar.blogspot.com/2006/06/socks-little-further-along.html) on my blog.
When I made the toe-up sock from grafton fibers I found that making the chain then crochet up for the cuff was tight around my ankle and so I made a larger chain. Is there a better way to do this?

I'm back from my whirlwind trip of Northen Virginia! It looks like my son in law is facing a heart cathader to check for a blockage just after Father's Day and my Dad is as cranky as ever!
I took my crocheting with me and finished my third pair of socks on the way up as well as starting on my 63 More Square afghan. (I ran out of my sock yarn) When I got home with the socks they quickly disappeared in my youngest daughter's room never to be seen again. They are about 2 inches too long for her foot, I offered to redo them but she said I'm not touching them.
I went to Walmart today and found some cotton yarn, Peaches and Cream and bought 3 skeins. I'll be back at the socks tonight!!

Hi All, I am now on my FOUTH pair of socks. I completed my first two in sunbeam yarn ( a basic sock yarn sold in the UK), and have also done a pair in Lorna's laces shepherd sock variegated yarn. I since found a 400g cone of superwash cream coloured sock weight yarn in my stash, and have been dyeing this with food colouring to make more socks with (should get four more pairs!). The first pair is variegated blues/burgandy colour.
My first pair were the south bay toe up pattern, but I have since been following my own modified pattern, which is like the grafton fibres toe up but in in half treble crochet (half double in US speak!) with a double crochet (single crochet US terminology) short row heel (so that there are no seams to sew) and a front post/back post ribbing. I have memorised the pattern, which is very simple, so it's a nice mindless and portable project!
My digital camera is broken at the moment, so I can't post pictures, but I am very pleased with these socks - they are very comfortable and fit really well.

I couldn't let Michelle out do me (LOL) here are my 4th pair of socks. I changed the V-sock pattern just a bit to single crochets going around and I did them in cotton yarn.

Great job in the socks Michelle! :clap They look like they fit you pretty good, so far that's been my biggest problem getting them to fit my little foot.
I got a request for a pair of socks from my SIL a few weeks ago, he wants me to do him a pair of Harley Davidson socks to ware when he takes his bike out. I've gotten the yarn for them just haven't started yet.

Had to go to a workshop for my new job in Atlanta so got to go to bigger store and finally found some good yarn. It is mercerized cotton, brand name Sinfonia. I don't think I got enough though :(.
Got my first one in progress but I can tell already the cuff will be too big, just don't have the heart to frog it! Maybe I can put in some elastic around the top when I finish. If these turn out I will order some stripped sock yarn online and go crazy!! This is FUN!!
Doreen
will try to take pic when completed and post.

New to the whole CAL thing but going to give it a try. Not sure what pattern yet, but have a few different ones I am thinking about. My mom is "always" freezing:wbrr so I think I will make them for her. (Wish I had that instead of the "always" hot flashes.):devil
