hello is everyone getting excited???:yay I have the list and a map of where the hook is going do you want a peek?:yes Ok here it is There is one question about Mrs. Principal that you will find so maybe some of you can help me out. The hook will be in the mail Sat at the latest! You have 5 days to use it to make 1,2 or as many 12 in sqs as you want. The email we are using is larryjimmie@yahoo.com for this project. Please keep us all posted about where the hook is and when it is going on to the next person. As long as there are no complaints I will put an address list in the journal that will be removed before the hook and journal are sent to its lucky reciepent. If you do not want everyone to have access to you addy I will omit it from the list and the person sending to you will need to email me for it.
Are you all ready:yes

Oh wow, I'm next!! Ok, I'll my engines revved. I've already got my yarn and am ready to go, can't wait. The hook is heading to Buffalo at the best time of the year to live here so I think it will be spending sometime out on my patio watching the birds at the feeder and enjoying the sun (with out SPF on, OF COURSE).

Jamie - I hear ya. :( I'm just before you .. that seems like a lonnnng time to wait.

But...

When the journal does get to us... think of all the lovely things that will be written in it (no pressure girls! :lol ). And that HOOK :hook will be all warmed up. Just THINK of the wonderful squares we will make!!!

Would it be weird for the participants to place a swatch of yarn that they used in the journal? :yarn I think it would be cool to see (and feel) what others have used. :yes Just a thought. (I don't want to complicate matters.)

:hug hugs to Jimmie Lu for coordinating all of this.

I am EXCITED!!! :cheer

If I figured correctly, I'd be due to get the hook around the beginning of August. Only problem is we are moving into a new place the first week of August. Is there any way of making mine a little further down the list or a little closer? I would hate for A)it to get lost in the mail with my mail being forwarded around that time and B)for it to get lost in the shuffle with all my moving boxes. If there's no way to move me on the list then let me know and I'll have it sent to me at work instead! THANKS!

Jimmie Lu
May 24th, 2006, 03:42 PM
donnalyn I will not put your address in the package and when the hook is getting close to you we will get the correct address and the person before you will have to PM me to get the address. the only other option is for me to bump you to last and then it gets sent to me after you?
Your choice

May 24th, 2006, 03:46 PM
Oh geez! I would hate to wait til the end! UGH! Yeah it sounds good to not put my addy in the package yet. When it's getting close, just shoot me a PM and I'll be able to tell you where it needs to get sent! THANKS! :)

ARE YOU READY!!!!!!

The hook will be leaving my house on Sat. Yipee!!!
The first place it is headed is beautiful New York state (I hope its nice there this time of year). Catlizg are you all ready for some company? I wish I was being squeezed into an envalope and mailed to everyone here Id love to spend a week crocheting with all of you. But you probably would get sick of my incessive crocheting and throw me out by the week end. lol So lets get hookin for heart disease!!!

So, when we're figuring out about when to plan for the hook's arrival, does it make sense to figure about a week per person ahead of you on the list? Or longer? As far as I can tell, it's not due to me any sooner than the end of June, so I'll be back from travel, no problem. I'm coming back on the 15th of June.

But, if I've miscalculated, and the hook is due here before I return, then I guess you'd better skip me and maybe Jimmie Lu can fit me in at the end? Hopefully that won't happen!

Jimmie Lu
May 25th, 2006, 03:25 PM
Patricia your calculations seem good to me but I will do the same with your address as another or 2 and have the person ahead of you PM me for your address so we can make sure you have your guest room all ready for Mr. Hook!

pplcrochets
May 25th, 2006, 04:15 PM
That sounds great - much relieves my mind that the hook won't sit and wait in case everybody ahead of me is lightning fast..... :D

I recall seeing that the source of many of our yarns is Turkey. Wouldn't it be neat if I can find something special (acrylic, of course) on my trip to use with Jimbo's very special hook when it's my turn? :c9

Jimmie Lu
May 27th, 2006, 05:03 PM
I mailed the hook this morning and it should be to catlizg by monday or tuesday

The hook is warming up in WNY as we speak - it's been in the high 90's for the last 3 days here, quite odd for this time of year, but it sure beats snow. I've been looking for the original post on the Travelin' Hook, wondering just what to add to the journal. I decided to add a piece of my yarn as someone suggested on one of the posts, and to write a little bit about why I crochet and chose to do this project. Maybe that will be of interest to whomever is the lucky recipient of our work? I'm also in the bookmark swap and I'll tell ya, it's darn hard to put down this Jimbo hook to pick up a steel and work on the thread. Sigh, a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do.

If my calculations are correct, I should be getting the hook just as I finish my year up at school. What a great way for me to start my vacation! :clap I am really excited.

Ok we have had a bump in the road but nothing to get all upset over unless you are me! when I sent the hook and journal I forgot to add the addresses and then I mailed them but they were not recieved and then ooops my son deleted the file while playing around (gotta pay closer attention to him) So I have the hand written list and am in the process of re typing so what will happen is there is enough info to get it to the 3rd person so by then I should be able to just send you a PM with the list. or be able to give you the next person to send to I appologize about all this but life has been a bit crazy around here and there is no sign of it easing up anytime soon.

Catlizg
June 12th, 2006, 11:50 AM
OOOO, did you take a picture of your square before you sent it???

Oops, nope, never even thought about it. What a shame because I included some of the yarn I received from auntbubbels in a swap; thought it was kind of neat to make a square with yarn from 3 different sources. Oh well. It was still a ton of fun.

I'm reporting in to say that the Traveling Hook arrived in my mailbox late yesterday afternoon!

I would have posted sooner, but it's difficult for me to get on the computer after the kids get home from school and the husband arrives home from work.

Here it is, in its snug little holder, along with the journal:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v720/carsenault/travelinghook.jpg

I started a square with it last night. It's different using a wooden hook. It's light and smooth, almost slippery! I marvel at Jimbo's crochet carving chops! As soon as the kids are off to school, I'll get back to working on the square.

Glad things are moving along - I must say it is quite odd to me, for some reason, to see a picture of my handwriting in the journal. Have no idea why, but it's just......odd, somehow. Maybe I should just get back to work instead of playing hooky.

I've been working on a couple of squares. I hope these colors are autumnal enough! Here are pics of them!

This is the Marigold square from the 200 Crochet Blocks book. I kind of wish I hadn't put the variegated in the center, but I'm not frogging it now!
Pardon the unwoven ends. And, of course, it's WONKY!!!!!!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v720/carsenault/THsquare1.jpg

This square, which I'm still working on (can you see the hook peeking on the top of the picture?), is Esther's Square. It is blessedly free from wonk. It has a few more rows to go.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v720/carsenault/thsquare2.jpg

I hope to finish this square tonight or tomorrow and send the hook along on Monday. The squares will follow, shortly thereafter. Oh yeah, and I still need to write something in the journal!

Jimmie Lu
June 16th, 2006, 08:19 PM

I will report back when I get home!

Yeah, drinking Ensure mixed with Red Bull so he doesn't sleep! But how can he cabin-build and hook-carve at the same time????? If anyone can do it, Jimbo can! Don't forget to build a guest house for itinerant crocheters!

Folks, the hook will be traveling if the PO is open on the way home from work tonight. Actually, I think my PO has one of those automatic shipping dohingeys that doesn't require the whole place to be open. So....Wildthing, start stalking your friendly neighborhood postal carrier! Hello Everybody,

I'm in South Africa paying by the minute for connection in an internet cafe so no time to do a whole lot of browsing and reading messages. Can someone fill me in on what's going on with the traveling hook and the international participants.

I have temporarily forgotten the coordinator's name, but Dear Coordinator, I sent you a PM a while back with my South African address and questions about how I'm supposed to pay to make sure the hook gets here safely, but didn't receive a response. Please let me know what I need to do.

Take care, everybody.

Hi,
I just found your thread and what ya'll are doing. I do alot of charity work and send crocheted items all across the country for ill children, grieving families, cancer patients, etc. I would love to join in on your traveling hook to help make some squares for heart patients. Is it too late to join in or is the list always growing? Please let me know what I need to do to join.
Thankyou,

If Jimbo gets his whittlings done as fast as the members here want hooks he will build that cabin by the end of the year...let's see if we all bought one how long would it take him to finish...working 24/7 365 days a year , drinking ensure just to keep nourished, anyone want to guess?

ok guys heres where I got the patterns for the squares the purple one came from Leisure Arts "Contest Favorites Afghan Squares" the heart one came from the same book too and the sun flower one came from Leisure Arts " 99 Floral Motifs to crochet" all the squares were 8" but I motified them to make them
12"... so, looking at them, it appears that you added 4" borders? is that pretty much the way to expand a pattern to the size needed? then, I've got all sorts of patterns I could use! This is great! Thanks, Deborah for the inspiration - (but now I have no idea how to *narrow down* my pattern choices :eek)

I really admire the way you take a pattern and modify it to what you need! I'd like to be able to do that as well as you do - there are so many things I see that are great, but I can't use them the way they are presented.

I have done the same to make my squares bigger:) I have three of the 63 8" square books but most of the time when we are asking for squares they are 12" so I just add a border to make 12".

WOW only three more ahead of me I can hardly wait!!!! I have never used any other type of hook so this is going to be great!!!

Jimbo, Your hook has been just a delight to use! Thank you so much for making it for this cause.

I have finished my week with the traveling hook and wanted to share photos of the squares I did to contribute to our comfortghan.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e108/jschwardt/travelinghook.jpg
I chose Red Heart TLC essentials yarn in High Plains. This yarn reminded me of a pile of leaves from a crisp Chicago autumn. I am newer to squares, so I chose two simple ones from the Chochet Stitch Bible: Old American and Double Square. I hope they go well with the other beautiful squares that are being made for this project.
Thank you again for letting me be a part of this worthy group.

My understanding that the hook will be auctioned along with the afgan(s) made by all these talented folksm and the proceeds will be donated to a heart patient fund.

Jimmie Lu
July 29th, 2006, 04:48 PM
Well tecnically the gahn was to be made into several and those donated to heart patients. Well the hospitals I work with for many many charities all say the same make the gahn and auction it on a place like ebay with the proceeds to be donated to the American heart association. Please post your opinions on this all of the participants.
Second the hook and journal are sopose to be given to a winner here among the participants to be drawn at random when the hook is returned to me safe and sound.
IMHO Id love to see the hook journal and gahn all sold thru my ebay account and proceeds given to the charity indicated. Seems to me that most here would gladly bid on this amazing gahn and raise a nice donation in the mean while.
BUT--- I do not wish to anger anyone here if youd like to keep it the way it originally was although the gahns will not be taken by the hospitals here.
Your thought please????

Mrs. P- your sqs are awesome

As for what to do when all this is finished... I'm easy with how the donations are handled (or how monies are obtained - must be legal though! haha).. as long as we are still giving to a worthy heart-related charity.

These squares ARE a work of HEART :manyheart so it seems only fair that the blankets made with them should go to those who suffer from heart troubles.

what is a Jimbo hook?

jimbo
August 2nd, 2006, 01:22 PM
what is a Jimbo hook?

A Jimbo hook is a crochet hook hand made from a tree branch. In fact most of my hooks are made from branches that trees on my old homestead property donate specifically for hook making.
I make them according to specific grip styles in an effort to fit the grip to the user's hand.
The proceeds from the sale of my hooks go toward construction of a cabin for my family on the place. So its kind of like a partnership between the trees on the ranch and me. The trees donate the hook blank and i help them become hooks. You can see more in my blog.
Folks seem to like them, so i guess i'll keep on whittling away.

Thanks for the encouragement Jimmie. And you know what? When i started thinking about selling hooks, the idea was to have folks send me sticks from trees that were special to them, and that they'd like to have made into heirloom hooks. Mythunderbird sent me some special willow for hooks, and i did some for her. But since then nobody's seemed too interested. Now the traveling hook is way special, as its made from the old apple tree on the ranch where my sis and i played as little kids. So yeah send me your stick, i'd love to make you a hook from it if i can.

Jimbo,
is there anything special to look forin a stick that might get turned into a hook?

jimbo
August 3rd, 2006, 04:06 PM
Best is to find a branch that's still on the tree/bush that's dead but not cracked. Find a shape that's about twice the diameter of the hook you want, and that kind of fits your hand as you'd like. Cut it an inch or so longer than the length you'd like. Check for pith (the soft core some branches have) if its soft, it won't do unless there is enough hard wood around the pith to make a hook. How's that. But what really makes it wonderous is if you can pick a tree/bush that means someting special to you. There's magic in some of those sticks! The apple tree that made the traveling hook is a good example.

Hi, all!
Worked up my first square with the awesome Jimbo hook! I kept it simple, as this is the first 12" square I've ever done (kind of figured a traditional granny would be appropriate). I have two questions, though; one, is this yarn (Caron Rainbow Dreams Tradewind, ww acrylic) suitable for our color scheme? It has more blue in it than I realized when I started out. (As you can see, I couldn't resist sneaking the hook into the pic - it's just so attractive!)
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i130/pplcrochets/Charity/T_Hook5Aug064CRs.jpg
and two, how can I keep the hook from binding? I must be doing something wrong, as it seems way too hard to slide the loops over the hook back and forth. The hook is so comfortable to hold that there must be something I can do to fix the binding problem?

(Edited: come to think of it, I think this is the first granny square I've made - no wonder I couldn't figure out the border right...)

....I didn't realize there was a certain color scheme?.....I think we're trying to stick with autumn colors?

thanks for the kind words! It's a little "wonky" (a technical term that fits perfectly), but I wasn't about to frog it anymore after the 5th attempt! :hookHas anybody else found that the final border round of dc'ing into each dc and chain-1 sp makes the edge begin to ruffle? I tried skipping the third stitch of each 3-dc group; too small, edge cupped (=9 fewer stitches per side as compared to using every stitch that made it ruffle). Then, tried various permutations inbetween - the version I finally used skipped all but three of the 3rd dc's in each side. If I did it again, I think I'd add one more stitch to make it four added stitches per side, since the border still cupped slightly.

Deb
August 5th, 2006, 06:19 PM
I find that with 12 inch squares, you just get WONK. There is no stopping it... it just happens. :( Thankfully, once joined, they seem to straighten out.

I LOVE :manyheart the colors you used Patricia! I am now craving a trip to the LYS to get some fallish colors.. just like that.

;) o0O(wishing that someone - hint hint - would take a picture of the finished squares all together.. so we could seeeeee. :devil )

Patricia,
colors look great! I like your square. I too realized I never made a granny square after I joined this group. It is really odd to be crocheting for the past 6 years and not to have done something as little as a square. It was a learning experience.

Twinnish
August 6th, 2006, 10:14 AM
Don't worry---WONK happens! The wonk will disappear when it's joined with the other squares. Good work for your first granny ever! That looks a lot like one of the colors I used. My feeling is that blue counts as an autumn color because the sky is always so clear and blue!

Yeah, it's a rationalization, but a really good one!

Jimmie Lu
August 6th, 2006, 09:23 PM

Sorry for not responding to this sooner, but it took some head scratching and maybe a forehead slap or two to come up with an answer.
I think its a case of traveling hook jet lag. Maybe you can sooth its little tummy by rubbing the shank with a soft cotton cloth. Polish it up a bit and it should smooth out just fine (I hope).

Beautiful square! Perfect colors! Sorry for the trouble though.

August 8th, 2006, 11:09 PM
Thanks, Jimbo! You know, I think it's the yarn. The next square I made, I also used some Caron simply soft, and that yarn just glided off the hook. So the vari (Caron Natura Rainbow Dreams Tradewind) is somewhat coarse. I also tried rubbing the shank with some waxed paper; helped some. I'll also try the soft cotton cloth - sounds like a good idea. Still love the hook!

I put up a pic of my first square here (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showpost.php?p=435598&postcount=164) (99 Granny Squares, #53, designed by Martha Brooks Stein), and I completed two more before sending on the hook. For these, I added two more yarns, Autumn Red and Dark Sage, both Caron Simply Soft (love that yarn!). Like the first square, this one is also from the 99 Granny Squares book. It's number 44, designed by Anne Halliday:
(from left to right) Front, back, and corner detail:
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i130/pplcrochets/Charity/T_Hook14Aug061CRs.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i130/pplcrochets/Charity/T_Hook14Aug063CRs.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i130/pplcrochets/Charity/T_Hook14Aug064CRs1.jpg
What I'm trying to show in the corner detail picture by pulling one of the puffs forward is how the little puffs (the Tradewind yarn) sit on top of a round right behind them. That's why the puffs don't show from the back. The edge to either side of the corner puff is turned up towards the camera, and you're looking at the square edge-on, seeing the puff and backing round as layers. There are two rounds with puffs; the outermost, and the fifth. The puff round is made then its backing round. I made some changes from the pattern in substituting colors, and switched one round from its position as the last border to being an inner round in order to balance my color scheme. The original pattern would have shown it as the outer border framing the last round of puffs. I wanted to add that last round, but it would have made the square bigger than 12". This was a really fun pattern to make. I can see playing around with all kinds of color schemes on this one!:hook

The last square comes from the 2006 crochet calendar. It's "Framed Sunset", one of the Crochet Dude's Flying Afghan squares, shown on the pages for September 4th and 5th (from left to right, front then back):
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i130/pplcrochets/Charity/T_Hook14Aug066CRs.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i130/pplcrochets/Charity/T_Hook14Aug068CRs.jpg
I don't think I got it right, since his picture shows the cables running vertically nice and straight, and mine definitely slant towards the center. :thinkI had trouble with the pattern (should have gone to check for errata) where the cable rounds switch off to the bordering round, and that looks like where the problem is. It called for stitching in each stitch across. The way I understood that instruction would have put in so many stitches that the edge would have ruffled like mad, so instead I used the number of stitches called for (31) and tried to put them in evenly across the cable pattern. Clearly, I got too many towards the corners. To make the square the right size, I added the second border round of half double crochet, which isn't in the original pattern.

One of the details I liked the most on this square was in round 2, where you stitch into the back loop only of the round 1 stitches, making that nice ring effect in the center. Jimmie Lu, you'll have your work cut out for you fixing the "wonk" in this one when you join it! :embar

All in all, I really enjoyed working with the hook and trying squares that were out of my comfort zone. Learned a lot, and would gladly do it again! Thanks again to Jimmie Lu for organizing this and assembling the 'ghan(s) - a true labor of love :hug

Patricia, those squares are beautiful! What pretty colors and choice of patterns. And let me tell you, the wonk will come right out of those babies, no sweat! This is going to be one spectacular 'ghan when it's done!

Jimmie Lu, I'd love to see a pic of what you've joined so far!

Good afternoon everyone, The hook has left my home and on it's way:cheer

And so is my square heading to Jimmie's, I might be the only one here but I am sorry to say that was the hardest square I have ever made! It took everything I had to finnish it with the hook! maybe it is because I hold my hook different than other people but my fingures were not in the right place:(

But I am glad I was a part of this Thank you for letting me in on this:hug

Just dropping by to see how many talented fingers have been adding patina to the hook. What a history that hook will have, eh?

October 9th, 2006, 01:08 PM
Oh Jimbo. While I don't admit that I actually HAVE the hook, I would like to say that if I DID HAVE the hook AND the journal, it would be a most interesting story reading what was written before me and what joy this journal will be giving someone(s) when they receive the finished product made from such a remarkable hook. But alas, I cannot claim any of that as true.......
