I found this yarn in a size 10 jumper in a thrift store, loved it enough to buy, with the express purpose of unravelling it to make something out of. So I decided to use it to make a shrug using the "fluffy pink shrug" directions. Piccy here (http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y37/perigrine2/05-06-06039.jpg), to fit a size 14-16. Its purple, navy blue, green and white-ish/blue.

that is a very, very beautiful shrug! Great job, and I love the idea of recycled yarn! I am going to go through some of my old sweaters that I hate to part with and see what I can create with them.

I have no idea. It is really thick. About the thickness of a G/H hook.

Wow! What great colors! I can see why the yarn in the sweater called out to you to be "rescued" (that's what I call recycling yarn... rescuing it for the project it really wanted to be :lol)! I :manyheart recycled yarn and I :manyheart your shrug!

Great work, and thanks for sharing it with us!

Very nice transformation. Now you must gift it to a special friend who will appreciate the work that went into it. :)

Very nice! :clap

You were so brave, I would have worried that I would get halfway through and it would stop unravelling!

Now you'll have me going through the thrift store looking for yarn items, too. How do you know if a garment has "rescue-able" yarn?

um, instinct? I'm not being flip here, I use the same feel for 'undoing jumpers' as I do when sussing out thrift store yarn.

I judge by content and the type of yarn in the garment. There have been quite a few of those 'thick/thin' yarns knitted up. I passed on those, same with the 'matted' mohair and other types. Felted wool is not good either. I tried to unravel a mohair sweater with great seams, and after wrecking it enough so that it is no unwearable, gave up on trying to unravel it. I learnt really fast not to attempt something that 'I think I can undo' :eek

I used the info from this site (http://www.neauveau.com/recycledyarn.html) as a guide for the seams and after undoing just one cotton sweater decided that wasn't a great idea, because it was made up of a pile of smaller strands, and if one was cut/broken it detracted from the over all appearance. (Yes, ok, I realise that bought cotton does too, but this was unwound and so looked...messy).

Holes or stains aren't an issue, coz you can just skip those parts when winding your 'new' yarn up.

I was too, but a decent yank on the strand usually fixed it..and if it broke, well, who cared? I got a gorgeous pound or so of yarn for about 4$ US. It was worth it ;)
