Thanks so much, Empress Busy Bee!
Hope you will enjoy making the shawl when you get a moment (or two, ahem)!

Noreen I'm so sorry about your kitty. It's always hard. :hug
That's the exact post why I bought my issue months ago. I just haven't had a chance to start it yet.
I have been following this thread though. :)

Okay, gals, I think I'm gonna give this one a go. :eek I've been looking for a gift to make for a friend who *adores* butterflies and this looks like a good choice. I still have to go pick up the magazine, and pick out and order the yarn, so it won't be for a week or so, but it's definitely gone on my to-do list.
Question...do we think this would work with a lace-weight yarn? I've read through the thread, checked the LB site and I'm still a little confused about the gauge. I'm specifically thinking about something like this (http://www.knitpicks.com/yarns/itemid_5420127/yarn_display.aspx) which doesn't have a gauge, and only says 2/16 on it (I'm assuming that's 2/16"). I guess I just love the idea of it being so delicate. If we don't think it'll work, I'll look at a fingering-weight, I guess. Thanks!
Noreen, I'm sorry about your kitty too. :hug

Hi Fran
Best way to figure out if a certain yarn or thread will work for you is to do a 'wraps per inch' test.....
I explain how to do it on my blog: www.hankeringforyarn.com (http://www.hankeringforyarn.com)
and thanks for the kind note about our kittygirl,

I'm tossing that idea around, too. Maybe two strands held together for the body and one strand for the mesh. But I'm not good at doing anything "outside the lines"...I'd much rather follow the directions exactly. I ordered the swatch card from Halcyon, so we'll see how that goes. I'd think that I'd have to buy a lot of that laceweight yarn to make the shawl big enough...probably more than Knit Picks would have in stock of a certain dye lot. Good luck whatever you decide.

I was thinking of that, too, though I've ordered 10+ skeins of sonmething from them and never had dye lot issues. In fact, I placed 3 orders over June/July where they were able to get me the same dye lot of one yarn for all of them!
If they come in 100g skeins, I'm just wondering how many skeins I'd need. That's where I run into problems. Hm. :think

Me, too. I thought about just ordering one skein and working it up to see how many butterflies I could get out of it. Isn't that dumb? I know Noreen has explained till she's blue in the face, but I still have trouble. Yes, I really am that dense when it comes to math. I will probably end up ordering from Halcyon three or four of the one pound cones and just be done with it. :blush

Hallo fellow Butterfly Shawlers.....
Here's a leetle math from your resident Butterfly Designer :lol
The original shawl took 12 balls of Lion #10 cotton.
There are 3.3 oz in each ball, but let's round that up for ease of the figuring:
So, 4 oz per ball x 12 balls = 48 oz......... so I would buy 50 oz to be safe.
In metric, we'll call the balls 100 gm (they're really only 94 gm)
100gm x 12 = 1200 gm ( 1.2 kg) ........ I would buy 1500 gm or 1.5 kg
Yardage: the Lion #10 cotton has 400 yd per ball.
so 12 balls = 4800 yards
in metric: 360 m (but we'll downgrade that for easier math to 350 m)
and you get approx: 4200 meters
(why the difference? a meter is about 40 inches long)
Hope this helps!

Yes, but if we wanted to use a laceweight yarn, wouldn't those numbers change? :think 4800 yards of #10 thread makes more or fewer butterflies than 4800 yards of laceweight? 4800 yards of #10 thread weighs more or less than 4800 yards of laceweight? (I've heard that going by weight is iffy anyway, since some dyes weigh more than others.)
That's where we're stumped...converting to a larger yarn. :shrug :scrachin :2blush :cry :huh :worried

I think there are just too many variables here that it is very difficult to figure out accurately how much material each of us needs ahead of time.
First, if you use a different number of strands, that drastically changes the amount used per butterfly. For example, Paulette is using only 2 strands, rather than 4, for her butterfly, so she is using only about half of what Noreen used for each butterfly. You won't know until you try how many strands work for you best. Throw in the fact that you still use one strand for the mesh part and it's even more complicated.
Second, if you use a different weight yarn than size 10 thread, that will affect the amount used, even if you use 4 strands. One may even decide to make each square bigger for a heavier-weight yarn, thereby possibly using fewer motifs than originally called for.
So, I think I'll use the information Noreen gave us and do some other fancy math work (I'm a physics grad student) based on that to make the bestest and most accurate and scientific "guesstimate". :lol
But seriously, I think it's a good idea to do some swatching anyway. You get better with the butterfly each time you do it, not to mention figuring out the amount you need more accurately.
Just my two cents on this much discussed subject...

Oh for crying out loud!
Wouldn't it have been a good idea to use a calculator to work out the math that I posted about yesterday? :eek
ahem.
AND wouldn't it have been a good thing if I had gotten the RIGHT amount? ROTFLOL?!
12 x 4 = 48 LOL!
12 x 3= 36 LOL!

Actually, I saw that, but since you were rounding up anyway, it comes out just shy of 40 oz. in the end (3.3 oz x 12 = 39.6 oz.)...I didn't want to say anything...People give me a hard time for being a math snob in general. :blush

Oh, Natasha, I hope you didn't think I was picking on you or anything, because I wasn't. Actually, I just ordered the sample card myself. So the practice butterflies will be just that...practice.
:blush
I think ordering one skein and trying it out is actually the best way to figure it out, as I said a few posts back.
Here is what I'm thinking for myself. I found that 3 strands of size 10 worked well for my practice butterfly (http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j67/mem1gui/IMG_5965.jpg). So I won't be using more than 3 strands since the 5/2 Pearl Cotton by Halcyon is even a bit thicker (25 wpi) than Lion Brand's Crochet Cotton Noreen used (34 wpi). Noreen used about 4800 yards of that stuff for the whole project.
So, if I order 2 pounds of 5/2 Pearl Cotton (= 4000 yards according to the web site), that's 17 % less yardage than Noreen used on her shawl. 3 strands instead of 4 (or possibly even 2 strands) is 25 % less in yardage, although you still have to make an allowance for the mesh part, which requires the same yardage. But the bulk of the material IS in the butterflies, and I tend to make things a bit smaller to fit my 10-year-old-size frame, so 2 pounds should do it.
At least, that's my logic. Besides, someone mentioned that Halcyon is likely to have the same dye lot if I run out. But it will be rather embarrassing if I run out after all this...:blush
Noreen, here is :hug for you as well. I'm so glad we have you here, because not only you are THE designer, you are super-nice and super-helpful. :manyheart

Hey Everybody!
Noreen...I'm so sorry for the loss of your precious little fur baby. I know it's hard to lose our furry little creatures. :(
So sorry I've been scare lately. I'm having computer troubles and I keep dragging my feet at taking it in. Next week we are going to Carlsbad Caverns and I will take it in then. I'm hoping maybe I won't miss it that much if I do it that way. Withdrawl can be a very ugly thing you know! :eek;)
I couldn't post a pic before because I lost the battery charger for my camera. I couldn't find it anywhere. I finally ordered one online and the same day I placed my order I found my charger! Yes, Murphy is alive and well and I'm married to him! :D Then I started having computer trouble and my computer will not open certain applications...one of them being the camera wizard to upload my pics to my computer. Needless to say I've been VERY frustrated.
I finally used my dh's computer, I set up the software needed on it and I have have pics to share.
Here is my practice butterfly out of different color threads:
http://aftergodsownheart.com/blog/imagescrochet/2006_07_21_bflycal2.jpg
I have been waiting and waiting for the thread I ordered but I think the person I ordered it from forgot about me. I'm either going to order some DMC Cebelia or I may hunt down the post of the person who order Egyptian Cotton thread and I may order that.
Since I couldn't wait any longer I picked up some #3 Senso thread in black metallic. I'm going to make my MIL a shawl for Christmas in that. Since it's #3 I'm only using 1 strand and it's coming out a little lighter than the 4 strands of #10 but it's coming out the same size so I'm going to continue on. I've completed 3 butterflies so far, here's one...
http://aftergodsownheart.com/blog/imagescrochet/2006_08_17_butterflyshawl1.jpg
I will also be making my mom this same shawl for Christmas. But, I'm going to work on mine first. :D (Sorry mom...NOT! ;) )
More pics are up at my blog in this entry (http://aftergodsownheart.com/blog/?p=126) if anybody is interested in looking. I can't wait to finish up one of my shaws...I can taste it now!
I also can't wait to see Paulette's daughter's bed cover! That's gonna be so sweet!

GinaLaughed, I LOVE your butterflies - they're so pretty! What gorgeous colors you chose. And it was really neet to see the black one, too, 'cause I was thinking of doing something in black, gray and white. I have a feeling I'm gonna end up with about 12 shawls or variations thereof by the time I'm done with this:lol . But earlier in the week my judge came out before court had started and he was wearing his mu-mu (black judge's robe) and a white shirt and a gray tie and I said, "Wow, those colors look great together. Stand still for a minute while I match that shade of gray to my Halcyon color card." He thinks I'm nuts... *he's right*... but it really did look nice together.
And then Ah Leah has changed her mind - again - and told me to "just pick some colors"... she was quite fond of pink and brown together, but then she mentioned "some neutrals"... so I'm gonna get that Halcyon swatch card and go on their site and order a selection of pretty threads in some different sizes (no #20, thank you very much) and see what I come up with.
Big Giant hugs to ya'all :hug .... and work on lots of butterflies while Crochetville is 'down for repairs' over the weekend... there's a post about it so don't anybody panic if you can't get on this weekend:eek

Thanks, Paulette! I just love watching these butterflies come to life! I haven't had time to work on them lately because I'm trying to finish up some other WIP's so I can clear them out of here. I think I'll make this weekend a butterfly weekend after I finish my second round ripple tonight. I think that will be a nice way to help ease the withdrawl I'm already experiencing thinking about the ville being closed. My dh is happy though...he needs me to help him with his resume so he thinks this timing is perfect! :lol
That's quite a funny sight I picture with you and your color card and the judge! He must have thought you were nuts!:sofunnyOh well...he will never understand.
I hope you find just the right colors for Ah Leah. I'm sure whatever you chose will be just perfect!

Hi Everyone,:juggle
Not sure if this will make it through with the 'offline' thing happening with Crochetville......
Whew! what a week this has been....... a whole bunch of deadlines all had to be met at the same time, :bounce :lookout oh My!
But, yay! They have been met, now to get it all together for the next set!
Today, we did a 'spinners/weavers gathering', which was great fun. (we had a booth, selling our 'Crone-Findlay Creations' spoolies, potholder looms, patterns, books etc). One of the other vendors had luscious silk roving, so I bought some gorgeous bombyx and some silk/bamboo blend to spin into my daughter's shawl.
Tomorrow, I need to take pics of the new spoolies and potholder looms that didn't sell and get them up on my website.
Sorry I haven't been able to get to the messages this last week, but with the generalized mayhem, something had to give. I should be more available next week!
Back to spinning silk and then to sleep..............
sweet dreams everyone!:sleep
hugs all round,

You want to know the real funny sight? The judge doesn't raise an eyebrow to me telling him, "Stand still. Your mu-mu is in the way." Or if I'm sitting there crocheting and he wants to go on the record he'll just look at me and say, "Can we go on the record?" and I say, "Just a minute. Let me get this stitch done." And he waits. Like he has a choice. :devil
Oh, the indecision of picking the colors for Ah Leah... WHY IS THIS SO HARD??? I think I'm gonna order quite a few different colors from that Halcyon... why did they have to make it so pretty and in so many colors... it's just not FAIR!!!!! I'm sure I look like a mental case 'reading' the Halcyon color swatch card everyday, just staring at it like I'm waiting for it to do tricks or explode or something... Hi everyone,
I was reading my gmail (about butterfly shawls & afghans & whatnot) and noticed a web-clip at the top about Butterflies...
My curiosity piqued, I followed the link, and it is a company that supplies Butterflies for releasing for special occasions (like weddings!!)
Thought Noreen or her daughter might possibly be interested...
http://www.butterflyreleasecompany.com/
I'm on the last few squares of the BF afghan for my daughter .. I would've been finished, but I decided that 12 11inch squares didn't make it big enough. I had to make 8 more so it's a 4 square x 5 square afghan. (plus the border)
Then I may start playing with the shawl squares. I bought some 1 skein of blue variegated Omega Sinfonia just for this .. but still have to find some thinner thread for the net. Wouldn't you know this comes up after I've given away all my size 10 thread?? :D figures.

Just finished my first butterfly. Not too bad for a first try, the second wing went much quicker than the first and I'm sure the next ones will go even quicker :) I'm sure you guys can also pic out the mistake on the first wing too, lol. I really like the sheen of the Halcyon 5/2 cotton. I used 3 threads instead of 4. The color is a royal blue, the pic just doesn't do it justice.

Hi Lisaizme
We'll have to stick to crocheted butterflies at DD's wedding;)
Monarch butterflies being released here would mean a whole lot of dead butterflies very quickly...... ick......
Now, if I had the ability to grow the plants that silk butterflies eat, then........ oh, yes! I'd be nursing them along! :D
'course, we could always make origami butterflies for the wedding.....
:think

I used to see tons of copies at local bookstores (Borders, B&N, etc.), but they have been phasing them out and the last time I was there, there were only two tired-looking copies left. I'll look today and pick one up for you if they still have it.
If all else fails, here (http://www.onefineyarn.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=VKK1200602) is a link to order it online... Here (http://cgi.ebay.com/VOGUE-KNIT1-magazine-Summer-2006-patterns-knitting_W0QQitemZ7039607241QQihZ014QQcategoryZ280 QQssPageNameZWD1VQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) is also an ebay listing with a bit lower price and a lot lower shipping if you use media mail.
I should have just picked up a few copies when I saw lots of them...eh?
Edited to add: No more copies at the local Border's...

Hey EVERYBODY! I got my Halcyon thread today and it so BEAUTIFUL! I picked a bunch of colors (decisions, decisions - not good at making them) and I'm gonna have to roll some balls so I can hold the four strands together... funny, but this #10 thread does appear to be a smaller gauge than the #10 thread I bought at Michaels :think - the Michael's stuff I was using just two strands and getting some decent butterflies, but I can see with this Halcyon I'll be able to use four! I'm so excited!!!!
I haven't made a butterfly in a while:( 'cause stupid work kept me so busy... and I've been making this cape with a pattern that is terribly difficult for me to read... I think something was lost in the translation... Here's the link to that little challenge if anyone feels so inclined as to want to "help" I was able to do the increases and now Im on the graph part... A funny aside that I have to share with you...I subscribed to Knit.1 after I got the magazine from you...(thank you again...) and the next thing I know, I ended up with 2 bills, and 2 copies of the same issue of the magazine for the next month...well...hmmmmm...so I call customer service to cancel one and they had 3, count 'em 3 subscriptions for me...got it down to one...*whew...* I did that recently with another magazine subscription...I think I'm getting old.

I finally have a plan. I bought some dmc baroque. I will make all the butterflies then I plan to dye them afterwards. I want a multi-colored shawl. I will dye some yarn, I think blue, like the butterflies are flying in the sky to join them.

Thanks - The original length was 19" inches long - 7" inches longer than mine! Unless, at 42, I grow some I had to go for the 12" inches. I played with it but thought it lost something with anything shorter than 12" inch fringe.
I really wanted to fringe it with torn white and orange chiffon, but could not find any orange chiffon here in town at all.

Well, creating this butterfly shawl has become like a second job for me... the pay being the joy I get from making it...
After the agonizing decision of thread color (ended up with several) I found that I needed a ball winder for the HUGE cones of pink and brown Halcyon thread that I ordered... so I researched what y'all had to say about ball winders in various threads and found me one on eBay.
Then I decided I needed something to hold my thread that isn't in balls, the regular thread that you buy at Michael's that is cellophane shrink wrapped, 'cause the balls were misbehaving and tangling on each other. I came up with this idea and husband made it a reality.
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j80/Paulette112264/threadholder008.jpg (http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j80/Paulette112264/threadholder008.jpg)
this is two posts (short table legs) screwed into a piece of wood to hold the two balls of thread. It didn't work because every time the thread got to the bottom it would get stuck...
Plan B:
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j80/Paulette112264/threadholder011.jpg (http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j80/Paulette112264/threadholder011.jpg)
now this is a very cool box that has a flip top lid with a small shelf (prefect for hooks and scissors and such) and also opens at the front to put balls of thread! How cool is that!
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j80/Paulette112264/threadholder009.jpg (http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j80/Paulette112264/threadholder009.jpg)
and if you're thinking, wait, those look like TOILET PAPER HOLDERS, you are correct! I realized I needed something that would spin loosely and I saw a 'thread holder' in a crochet catalog for the amazing price of only $40 plus shipping and handling, and it looked like a toilet paper holder... so I went in the loo and replaced the toilet paper with a ball of thread! I realized I was on to something but that my choices were to either have my husband install a second toilet paper holder and do all my thread crochet in the bathroom, or go get a couple TP holders at Lowe's. Just so happened these pretty wood ones were on clearance for $3.97, we already had the box, and hubby is more than handy with power tools!
If anyone else feels they can't go another day without one of these handy gadgets and you need any help (it's pretty self explanatory, but hey, never know) just drop me a PM and I'll see what we can do.
Off to make butterflies!:manyheart

Brilliant design. Does your yarn winder make center-pull balls so you don't need this contraption for the Halcyon thread? I don't know anything about them...do they all make center-pull skeins? That would make a lot of sense, so maybe I'm just being a bit slow here...

NO, my dear, I am the slow... I haven't received my ball winder yet, but I'll be sure to let you know if it makes center pull skeins... wouldn't that be delightful!
My contraption is for those 'ready made' balls of thread as pictured that unwind from the outside - and it's very effective! Oh, the pride I felt... until my children saw it and wanted to know why I had toilet paper holders mounted on a box... they were also quite confused over the balls of string I had left ON the toilet paper holder in the bathroom... oops.:eek

Woo-hoo! This thing is FUN!!!! It does make center pull skeins and it's really easy to use and it WORKS! I had to frog a shawl:( so I just put the end of the thread onto the ball winder and started turning and it unraveled it right into a big ball of yarn! Very cool! I know it's quite a bit, but.... if you go through some of the prior posts in this thread a few people have put up pictures of the two-toned butterflies or links to pictures. Also there is a link to Halcyon thread (fabulous stuff) and of course DON'T forget to download the correction. The pattern is constructed of something like 21 large butterfly motifs and (I think) 9 small butterfly motifs - the correction is in the small butterfly motif and is available on Noreen's blog and probably in the corrections section of the knit.1 web site!

What size Halycon thread did you get? While I was at Michaels today, I compared some #3 cotton to Patons Grace, and they were pretty close in size. I know the lady who made the peach colored one used one strand of Patons grace, so I bought a some of the size 3 to experiment with.

The #3 Cotton threads will be equivalent to Patons Grace. I used about 4 1/2 skeins of Patons Grace (I think). Was confined to the bed and Perocet at the time from surgery.:devil That's how I finished it in about a week and a half.

Fidgement, the original design as written by Noreen calls for 12 balls of #100 White Lion Crochet Cotton, 400 yards per ball and a size B (2.25mm) hook and a size F (3,75mm) hook, and you hold four strands together for the butterfly bodies and then a singel strand for the mesh. This thread is supposed to be equivelent to #10 thread.
My experience, I bought the #10 thread (not the Lion Brand #100 Cotton) and I could NOT get four strands of it to work with a size F hook so I've been holding two strands together and it looks good to me. I have also used Royale Gemini Double Strand Crochet Thread which is two strands 'wound' together and is equal to #3... I also used Patons Grace and that worked... experimenting here!
I orderd some thread from Halcyon in #10 and surprisingly it was finer than what I bought at Michael's :think and I was able to hold four strands together for that. Go figure...
The fun thing about this has been seeing all the different interpretations people have come up with... and by the way, Noreen spins her own yarns and threads!:yes
So have fun, pick some colors you like, maybe you could fool around with the smaller butterfly motif while you're waiting for your magazine to come... here's the link http://www.knit1.com/correction-2006su.php and it's pattern number 10!
Show us what you come up with, ask for help if you need it, and most of all HAVE FUN:yay

While I'm still waiting for the pattern to arrive, I have been playing with the little corrected trianlgle b'fly. I'm using the single strand #3 Royale Fashion crochet cotton which has a nice sheen to it. If anyone knows how it will hold up with washing, please let me know. I'm also using the Cebelia #10 thread for the mesh. I'm not finished yet, but when I am, I'll post a pic. The Cebelia is kind of weird to work with. Its sort of stiff like the manufacturer put some kind of coating on it. This is my first experience crocheting with it so all comments are welcome. The Halcyon thread is really tempting. Paulette, have you worked with any of it yet and how are you liking it?
Thats it for now!! How is everyone else doing?

The Halcyon is real quality stuff! I would definitely suggest getting the swatch card (I think it's $2 or something, no S&H) and it not only gives samples of all the colors but also in the different sizes... it is a dream to work with, too! I'm making my daughter a bed throw thing using four strands of #10 Halcyon in a pink shade with one strand of #10 in a medium brown shade... I'll have to take a picture to post...
As far as the other thread you mentioned, I personally don't have experience working with it but hopefully somebody will and can tell you how it washes up!

You mentioned in your second paragraph about not liking the way the neck came out - I assume you're talking about the larger butterfly. I think a few of us have mentioned problems sufficiently 'strangling' :eek the butterfly, but once you get the wings on and then put the mesh on it sorta all pulls together... seems no matter how tightly I pull that thread I don't end up with a very tight neck, but they look good when done!
I know what you mean about 'so many WIPs'... I'm working on a tunic for my daughter because she was complaining that I didn't make any of the things she put on the 'list' of items she'd chosen for me to make over summer (one was a itty bitty bikini!:no and she's 12!) But the tunic IS adorable and I'm about one-third done... Still only have 12 butterflies:( butterflies but also working on a cape that's in danger of becoming a UFO and an afghan that just got rescued from UFO status... then there's the pesky day job...:angry

Paulette, I'm happy to hear that about the neck! The poor thing looks like he's half hung over, sort of!:eek Or worse, half beheaded:no ! But, I'll keep plugging away. I do think the 4 strands of size 10 really do give the guys some heft and texture. If this is the case, which right now I think it is, I'll probably abandon the #3 and go with 4 strands of #10. Which means there will be another order from Knitting warehouse in my immediate future:hook :yarn :manyheart !
I feel for you having a 12 year old daughter who wants a tiny bikini! I think the tunic is a great compromise!
Thanks for your comments!
Have a happy Saturday! Cheers!

Fidgement, that's a funny ~ and accurate ~ description! Half Hung Over:lol !
I did a quick scroll through this thread to find pictures of finished butterflies so you could see how the mesh pulls the head into place... the following posts had either pictures or links to pictures (and if I left anyone out who has posted, please accept my apologies and let us know which post to look in for your finished butterfly) but here they are: Post #51, 73, 80, 138, 140, 171, 267 and 275 all have pictures of finished butterflies in different colors and with the correct number of strands so you can see how pretty and full they are.
It was either in Noreen's blog or in the knit.1 book where she talks about the creative process in designing this beautiful pattern and how she looked at the 'positive' and 'negative' space which makes the fullness, or open-ness, very important!
Happy Hooking!:hook

Gosh, Thanks again Paulette! I went and checked them all out and feel much better about the big guy here! The little one didn't look at all deformed while I was making him. Now that he's done, I could work up his kin a lot quicker. I'm glad I tried to experiment before finally deciding. When this big guy is finished, I'll post one of him as well. The difference really is pretty impressive.
Now to check the blog for the story of the shawls creation! I must have missed it before, but then...

ETA: The starter kit has been adopted and is on its way to South Australia. :hook
Welp, I bought the magazine and sent off for the color sample card from Halcyon. Yummy, yummy stuff, that thread.
However, I have decided/admitted to myself/come to terms with the fact that I will prolly never make this shawl (it's lovely, though!), so I'm offering a starter kit (or a starter-starter kit, since the thread and hook are *not* included) consisting of the uncut, original knit.1 Summer 2006 magazine (with a printout of the corrections from Noreen's website), the Halcyon color sample card, and two Halcyon catalogs.
Yes, all this can be yours for the low, low price of $5 plus actual postage from my door to yours. I know some of you overseas gals were drooling over this shawl but having trouble getting the pattern, so here's your chance.
I have a Paypal account. Please PM me if you're interested. :hook

Can one take a sabbatical from a CAL in which one hasn't actually put hook to fiber? Still have a subscription to this thread.....

I hear you, Patricia. :lol I am too busy with Christmas stuff to actually work on the shawl. But I definitely mean to continue...
Fidgement, your butterfly is so pretty! I LOVE the color combination. Yes, I had, and still have the same neck problem, but I don't think it'll look bad when they are all put together, like Paulette said. What I found is that you get better with the butterfly with each one you make...well I guess that goes without saying. :blush

Sakurasaku,
Thanks so much! I love pink! I'm almost finished with my big test b'fly guy and I'll post a pic when I'm done. I think I'm leaning towards four strands of #10 cotton though. The #3 doesn't give the same look. Anyway, thanks for looking!

Personally I got side-tracked making a tunic for my daughter and it seems like a dozen other things that have to be done RIGHT NOW:eek ... but hope to be back in the 'butterfly business' very soon... that Halcyon thread is screaming at me from a basket under the coffee table!
If anyone has any pics to show (you know, for inspirtation for the rest of us!) please share!

Well, my feeling is that since it's a motif-based pattern where you make the butterflies separately and you intend to get back to it, then you're still technically participating!:yes ... I think a lot of people are a bit busy right now and I anticipate things getting busier as the holidays grow nearer - I know I'm feeling pretty busy and I haven't even thought of holidays!
My production is way low :no on the crochet end of things; my courtroom will be closed for two weeks in Nov. and two weeks in Dec. which means I'll be 'floating' (covering unfamiliar courts) I have vacation over Thanksgiving week but no destination (my judge thinks I should go to London!) which is also when my 42nd B-day falls... Have a case going up on appeal that's going to involve me preparing a 2,200+ page transcript, then the teens at home, Ah Leah in Virginia whom I'd love to see...
So I say YES - you can take a sabatical and still be a member of the crochet along! :manyheart

hello to everyone here.
I am new to this site. It's wonderful to see such accomplished artists helping each other! I was looking for a crocheted shawl with butterflies, and I was thinking I would have to design it, but haven't the energy just now, even though ideas are circulating. I found word about the magazine with the perfect butterfly shawl, and in an excited state I drove across town to buy it after phoning around to shops with no luck.
So now I have all the butterflies finished, but am stalling at doing the mesh.
I chose royale crochet cotton in a violet hue. I discovered that some balls (without a dye lot notation) were more lavender, and some were more violet, so I combined 2 strands lavender , and 2 violet, with the mesh violet.
Here's hoping I can finish this one! I have read the posts and I feel pleased that others are enjoying the pattern too! Such creative responses!
Has anyone considered a border (no fringe ) with small flowers (something for the butterflies to flutter upon?

WOW, ZU ZU! You are good! This is your first post and you've finished all the butterflies???!!!!!!!!:eek Sounds like I'd better get working here:yes . My teenage daughter just shook her head in disgust at me and said, "NO more yarn purchases until you finish at least five things." What a party-pooper! I'm getting there!
As far as putting a different edging, I don't see why not. The designer, Noreen, is quite tall and put the long fringe because that was the look she wanted and it does complement the shawl very well... but that being said, since you're making it I think you can finish it any 'ol way you see fit! My older daughter whose in college has requested I make a bed cover for her using the butterfly squares... :( Yeah - no problem, honey.... maybe ten motifs by 12 motifs... that's only 120 - but no fringe!:yes It'll be done by he 30th B-day (she's 19 now)
Don't be intimidated by the mesh - it actually gets kinda fun as you fall into a rhythm and it really pulls those little buggers into shape, especially if you have 'floppy neck syndrome' as some of us have had!
Also, there is a correction for the small butterfly motif so be sure you download that - its on Noreen's blog and also under the corrections section of knit.1 magazine...
We would LOVE to see your beautiful butterflies, and lavender sounds so pretty... be sure to post a picture if you have a camera, and keep us up-to-date on your progress!:hug

Sorry, I haven't posted in ages! Since I just posted in the another CAL I'm in I thought I'd better update here too since I've been AWOL for so long. I just love all the pics I've seen so far!
I haven't worked on my shawl because I'm very unhappy with my thread choices wich has lead to me not having any thread to work with. I bought some black metallic Senso to 'practice' with. I was going to make up those butterflies for my MIL but I have since scrapped the idea. I don't like working with the Senso...while I love the shiny metallic thread that runs through it, it's splits all the time and the butterfly does not end up weighty enough for me. I bought some Sinfonia to do the butteflies with but it's not weighty enough either. (Now I'm stuck with a bunch of black Sinfonia...hmmm...what to make???) :lol I was going to put it all together with the DMC Cebelia but not sure how that would work out. :think
Originally, I had ordered the DMC Cebelia on sale from a webiste mentioned on this thread but I never got my order processed I guess and now I don't have the money. :( There were some kind of certificate issues so I was afraid to give my credit card info with all the warnings popping up. I emailed the person and she was supposed to send me an invoice so I'd know how much to pay for my order but I never got it. I forgot about my order, I guess she forgot about me, and now the sale is long since past. Hobby Lobby sells this thread for $2.99/ball but they don't carry it in black. :(
I'm still determined to make this shawl. I wanted it in time for Christmas but at this point I may not even get my thread for it till then. MIL and mom will not get theirs till Mother's day too. At this point I think I'm going to with the Halcyon (sp?). At least that will give me a reason to buy the yarn ball winder I've been wanting! :hook Also, I have decided that I not only want one in black but I must have one in white and pink as well! :cheer
So many obstacles for the most beautiful shawl I've ever seen! Anway...I'm sorta still here....at least I'm reading along and ohhhing and ahhhing at your progress. :)

GinaLaughed, sorry to hear about your thread troubles:( - how frustrating! But look on the brite side: You have the Mother's Day items all planned out AND plenty of time to make them:blush ... Okay, probably not cheering you up...
I tried quite a few threads/yarns and I'm still fooling around with it. There WILL be a butterfly shawl in basic old Ecru from Michael's (that's the one I have the most butterflies done in - 12) - I have also used Paton's Grace which is pretty fine, even though it's sold like yarn it has a weight more like thick thread... I've used some double-spun veriagated something-or-another (also from Michael's) and those look pretty cool...
My Halcyon order arrived and WOW - that's some NICE STUFF! I made one butterfly with that and what a difference... absolutely a pleasure to work with!
:manyheart I'm very glad you're not giving up... if you read back a few posts you'll see a few hookers have taken a 'sabatical' on the crochet along as they prepare other gifts for the holidays... but this is a great project to do in parts, since it's a motif you can do a couple, set it aside, come back and do a couple more...
Have fun and let us know what you finally decide on!

Hi Paulette,
Thank you for the encouragement! I am at a stalemate.
You did give me a much-needed laugh........thank you! ....No, I didn't just whip up a zillion butterflies!!! (wow!) No, I had come across something that showed this shawl, because , incredibly, I was looking for a shawl with butterflies, and I am in no mood to design one just now. I saw this site, and that is why I went scurrying across town to get the mag.
Despite my excitement, I then left it sitting around for a few weeks, due to fatigue and because I was fostering 5 little kittens ..........nearly lost my mind!
So I have been working on the butterflies now for a few weeks.
I decided to work on all the butterflies and wait on the mesh because it is easier to memorize bits and go faster if I keep doing it........
As for too much yarn........ha!...... I confess, I am a 'junkie'..... (also for fabric, patterns, beads, etc.)
Oh....the head problem: I decided that if I am still upset about it when everything is finished, I would tie on a thread , wind it tightly around the neck, tie it again, and weave in ends. Most likely, being sick of the entire thing by then, I would leave it alone!
Making a bed full of these butterflies does seem daunting!
I do have a pattern for a beautiful butterfly, but I have not yet decided how to combine them into a shawl.......(thus my excitement at seeing this pattern)
Thanks for the welcome!

There are posts throughout this thread with pictures and one in particular has a link to someone's blog which shows her finished shall. Also, Paulette posted a message with the post numbers of photos as well. If you search her posts, you should be able to find it. If memory serves me right, it was in the last month or so. It really is a very pretty shawl.

Hello everyone,
I hope people are still working on the shawl! I am working on the mesh that connects everything together. I admit it is getting to be a bit tedious. I am obsessing about making a chart showing how to scatter the butterflies. If only I can keep going, I will finish this thing soon! Some of the butterflies seem a bit cock-eyed despite the fact that I blocked them here and there (no pins, just water). It is the lower wing towards the inside that seems to curl a bit......
I hope things work out, as I am tired of it!

HI!
I think you will have to sew the motifs together, or sc them, as the patt has them put together as you do the 7th row of the mesh. I am still putting them together, based upon the chart I drew to arrange them prettily (and I can't really tell by the chart what will look best) . I have 4 together starting at the bottom point.
I still have to figure out an edging, but that will have to wait.:cat

I am still working on putting the squares together. Even though it is getting tedious, I am determined to complete it! I tell myself how many I have to do at a time to be finished by a particular date, but then I go days without wanting to face it. Guess what...............I wore the shawl to Thanksgiving, and everyone liked it!! (finished it the night before!!)
:artist
I didn't do the fringe, as I had decided not to. I crocheted the edging (with the 4 strands) all around, and played with doing 2 rows (too heavy) and picots (too heavy). I toyed with the idea of using 2 strands, or one, but in the end I left it. I was originally planning to put small flowers all around, but that may or may not happen........
This is indeed a MAJOR TASK .........and I can't believe I did it, as I have not done much for a long time. Courage to you all!
I don't know what to do next......I "need" another shawl----one that is going to be quicker.

So I just finished putting the mesh around the last six butterflies and all the other ones are already attached, so it WILL be finished tomorrow! :cheer
I was really hoping to finish it in Cambria and get a beautiful picture out on the beach, but perhaps I'll get a lovely pic in our garden or maybe down at the local beach...
Thanks for looking!:hug

I would love to see a picture of the shawl! I hadn't been able to find a picture or pattern.

I just saw a couple of copies of the knit1 magazine with the butterfly shawl pattern at my LYS about a week ago. If anyone would like a copy and the store still has it, I can send it for cost (magazine price $5.99 plus actual shipping; no extra handling charge).
But then again, this page (http://www.vintageknits.com/mag.html) has the magazine for only $4.00 plus shipping ($3.00 for media mail shipping), so it's probably cheaper and quicker to go that route... It's "The Art Issue" that has the pattern (Thanks Paulette for pointing out...see her post below for corrections to the pattern also), with a lady with a yellow cardigan sweater and bright yellow hair, holding up a similarly bright yellow lemon on the front cover.
I have not given up on this project. HOWEVER, I am crocheting frantically to finish a couple of large items before Christmas, which, is like what everyone else is doing this time of the year...I think.
Paulette, Cambria looks soooo beautiful...I want to go visit California again really badly. My BF and I did the PCH from SF to LA once (absolutely spectacular!), and we also fell in love with La Jolla Cove at another time we went to visit a friend in SD. Yes, there are some pretty beaches in Long Island, too, but the beautiful-coastline-to-people ratio is so much higher in CA and I find the people much more relaxed and friendly on the West Coast. In LI, we have to pay to park anywhere near the water, it's only pleasant during summer, and it gets ridiculously crowded. :( No wonder Long Islanders are much crankier.

Riohnna, Did you mean a picture of Noreen's shawl from the knit.1 magazine or a picture of one that someone else had finished? This is a picture of Noreen modeling her shawl amongst the birch trees and I think it's spectacular... it was previously posted on her site...
That's a great link to the magazine given above and you want the one titled "The Art Issue"... you'll also need a correction for the smaller butterfly that is available from the knit.1 site.... the shawl consists of 21 large butterflies and I think seven small ones...

Thank you all so much! It feels so good to finish something:D ~ I seem to be starter of many, finisher of few, so it is nice to be on "the other end" of a project... putting in the last stitches instead of the first:hook .
Hopefully after the holidays we'll be able to see some more of these magical shawls appear in time for spring (butterflies = spring!). I know I definitely want to do another one in a blue/green color and Ah Leah wants a bedspread cover thingy... she wanted it for Christmas, but Christmas is so darn cold in Virginia, I think I should aim for her birthday in June:devil

Golly you know how to make a gal feel good! Thanks!
As far as making another one, it really ~honestly~ is not as difficult as it looks! I know I've looked at many thread crochet tablecloths and thought "you've got to be kidding" but this really truly is a well-written pattern, you can do it is a 'carry along' on the large butterflies because they're done one at a time (all 21 of them) and then it actually starts putting itself together!:think Okay - it doesn't actually pick up the hook and crochet itself, but..s. :devil It goes together rather easily, and as you see the results it's very exciting. I don't know if any of you do cross-stitch but if you do, you know when you've sewn in about 8,000 little X's and you're ready to jump off a cliff and then you start doing the backstitching and, voila, suddenly all the detail comes out... that's how this shawl is!
Glad you enjoyed the Cambria pictures - this shawl will always make me think of Cambria and our lovely vacation... and as for the lovely yarn I acquired... the ones that are ocean colors will be a granny afghan, but not traditional squares... I just got a book The New Granny Square by Susan Cottrell & Cindy Weloth http://cgi.ebay.com/BOOK-NEW-The-New-Granny-Square-Cottrell-Susan-M-Welo_W0QQitemZ250055913541QQihZ015QQcategoryZ378QQ rdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem
and the cover afghan is 'killer' (talking like my teens now) but it combines several different colors in different ways and I LIKE it.
As far as they other giganto hunks-o-yarn I have named them Morticia and Gomez - they reall are BIG. I started attempting to wind them yesterday and got exactly one hank done. Took ten hours - look here if you want to hear more.
http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=39041
The blue/black yarn (Gomez) will be some sort of shawl IF I am able to get it into balls - hopefully this first one was just yarn with an attitude and ther rest will go better. I was thinking of maybe a Seraphina (haven't done one of those yet) or something that likes to be striped... I dunno. It'll have to tell me what it wants to be!
Morticia (the pink and sandy colors) is going to be an afghan - it's a HUGE amount of yarn (should be - cost about $200) and again it will be something special - it'll come to me...:hook

Wow! I can relate to the yarn 'calling' to you to suggest its own project, and also to the zillion ideas circulating.
I have a pattern for an exquisite , delicate butterfly, and I have been wanting to combine it with flowers for a shawl.. Then I did this current shawl because I think it is beautiful, and I didn't feel up to designing......but now I am thinking about it again.
:dreaming
I was able to walk on the jetty the other day to say hello to all the doggies, and to the sea birds sailing by. A seagull was sitting on the railing, and just lifted up effortlessly to catch a breeze, and floated on the air, delighting us. Pelicans soared by at eye level from where we sat on the little pier.:dog :ducky

I read of your saga of the evil yarn and really laughed!!!!!!!!:elle
Well, if you must know, I spent about 8 hours de-tangling the thread from this butterfly shawl because I had put all four balls in a big bag.! Ok, so I had a screw missing at the moment:coo ,,,,,,,,,I also gave up at some point and cut the threads. I hit upon the solution of putting each ball in a heavy plastic bag from a store, and putting all four bags into a large plastic shopping bag. My neighbor then said, 'well , of course it would have tangled the way you had it'.........I said , 'where were you when my brain was not functioning?'........
Kudos to your perseverance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:heehee (I would have insisted on de-tangling also, until I keeled over!_):out :out :sofunny

:artist Has anyone considered using this butterfly and the mesh to make a blouse? One could put 2 butterflies on a slant on either side of the front , (like a low, open V neck )and start connecting everything with mesh. I did this some time ago with another butterfly, using fabric.........hmm.........there are so many ways.........?????????

Paulette,
I also got the New Granny Square book. Perhaps after the holidays you might consider doing a CAL from this book? :idea :scrachin I like the cover one as well as the one with the interlocking rings that has something of a celtic feel to it. Anyways, its just a thought! Why crochet alone when there are so many who could join and encourage you to get another FO!:tup :santa :rud :hbulb :2snowman :fruitcake :ctree

Nope, never thouht of making it into a blouse, but that's a great idea! I am now committed (NO, I didn't say I'd BEEN committed:angry ) I AM committed to make Ah Leah a bed cover thingy using pink butterflies and brown mesh... already got the thread - that nice Halcyon stuff. I was just thinking about it while driving home, how large I should make it... maybe eight by twelve butterflies???:think

That is a GREAT idea! I fell in love with that pattern and really would like to make it using the yarn I bought in Cambria (not the possessed stuff that keeps tangling - but the pink and sandy stuff) I think waiting until after the holidays is a good idea... Let's plan for it. It is fun to "crochet along" and cheer each other on, help each other out...
Now all you butterfly-ers out there, don't think that you'll be giving up on the Butterfly Crochet Along... I still have another shawl to make and the bed cover mentioned above... we'll just be doing MORE projects:D

The butterfly cover for a bed sounds wonderful! (do you have any animals who would just love to lie on this?) :cat :dog :ladybug :cat
Your photo of the waves and the seagull in Cambria made me long for yarn with all those shades of blues , gold, and green, violet too. Maybe you could use that photo for inspiration for the yarn you bought. A lovely sea-afghan it would be! :magic
:party I'm going to a holiday party tonight and I will wear the butterfly shawl (violet thread) over white. It will feel festive.
I am inspired to continue thinking about the shawl using another butterfly and flowers, so I will be crocheting butterflies , too!:yes

Paulette,
Just wandered over to this thread and saw your pictures of your finished shawl: what a beauty (:cheer :clap)! You have really created a work of art (:cheer :cheer)! And it's practical too (:yes )!
Seeing your shawl makes me want to make one (:yes). (I don't know - finding C'Ville may have longterm detrimental effects (:lol))
Do you think anyone has back copies of the magazine that has the pattern? The mag's Web site didn't seem to have one. And another site that Sakurasaku suggested doesn't list the mag for sale anymore. (Sakurasaku, would you still be able to buy a copy for me?)

I looked in eBay and didn't find a copy which is unusual, and I went to the FAQ section of knit.1 magazine and found the following:
"Q: How do I order a back issue?
Call our customer service number: (877) 860-6164. It's toll-free! You'll be able to find out which issues are available and how to order."
The issue you want is The Art Issue, Summer 2006...
I'll keep searching eBay and Amazon and put a link if I find a copy...
Good luck...
UPDATE: Try this link - just stumbled on it today (December 6, 2006) and the price is newstand price - of course probably some S/H in there, but they have quite a few copies...

Hello Everyone!:yay
I'm the designer of the butterfly shawl from Knit.1 summer 2006.....
I have been crazy busy and haven't had a chance to keep up with the forum,
so. apologies and big hugs all round!
I will try to stay in touch with the Butterfly shawl CAL - seeing as I am still spinning the silk for my daughter's wedding this summer.
Our son floored us by announcing that he and his fiance are going to be moving their wedding up to May 07 from Aug 08..... YIKES! that means that both our kids are getting married this summer, plus I'll be off teaching workshops at Chain LInk in July......... oh my! I am spinning, weaving, crocheting, knitting and sewing up a storm for both weddings. AND, of course, still working full time on all kinds of new designs for magazines and books. (Lots and lots of new stuff coming out in '07! and 08)
Happy to be back!
One of the things that I have been doing a lot of lately on my www.hankeringforyarn.com blog is to make and design for great big HUGE crochet hooks! LOL! Too much fun!
I just uploaded pics to: http://www.crone-findlay.com/Crone-FindlayCreationsWhatsNew.html
Merry Christmas everyone!

Well, Noreen, you definitely get the award for busiest designer who is also preparing for not one but two weddings!!! Yikes:eek
I was just looking at your humongo hook with much curiosity as I became the proud owner of a hook with about a one inch diameter:lol ! Our resident hook whittler, Jimbo http://jimbosfrontporch.blogspot.com/2006_08_01_jimbosfrontporch_archive.html did a "hook whittling tutorial" (don't know if anybody actually was able to MAKE a hook despite his very good instructions) but I did end up with the 'sample' hook which he made in Jumbo size to show the details! I figured I'd hold 12 or so strands of yarn together and make world's warmest (and quickest) afghan:D but haven't attempted yet! You certainly do inspire me, Noreen!
I finished my first butterfly shawl in Cambria, California, and will be working on my second one after the first of the year... and also my daughter's 'bed cover' that she requested...
Well, best to you and yours, hope you have a wonderful holiday and it's great to hear from you again!
Hugs:hug
SPECIAL NOTE TO ANY HOOKERS NEW TO THIS THREAD: If you are joining us (please do) I put a link to a necessary correction for the small butterfly and also a link to obtain the magazine in the very first post in this thread! I did this on December 22, 2006, so hopefully this info will remain good for awhile! Happy Hooking!
