Oh No!!!:D I just printed this pattern. I was looking through this CAL and saw the pretty snowflake afghans. :dance And well........ since we really don't get much in the way of snow here,:2snow IF we get any at all......... And I really do miss the snow....... :flake But I don't miss driving in it.:drive I loved to watch the snow coming down :snow when I lived in Michigan...... hmmmmmm I have to decide on a color. I know I want the snowflakes to be white. I am just not sure for the background color yet.,.........:wangel :wlol :wgrin

Melissa, there has been talk of making the snowflakes with the yarn that has a silver thread through it. This is the time of year to get that in the Christmas Yarn bins. Just a word to the wise :idea

I think it would be wonderful myself and I am so trying not to make this one... even though that yarn is out there... and it is at the end of the 2nd aisle...nope not doing it... :no :yay :lol

C'mon, Darski, you know you want to...you visit this thread so often...you just need that little push over the edge. Ignore that little voice that keeps saying "You already have too many projects!" I do. :)

Julie, I think I've settled on the Country Blue Simply Soft color...I think it's the same one you did. It's not quite the blue I wanted but the other was so bright. My son is already begging me to make another one (though only the snowflakes on this one are done so far) in the bright blue for him.

I'm making 2 .... one of them is delft blue with white SFs, both are Redheart SS. The other one is Jiffy white SFs and Shaded Blues TLC Essentials. Just beautiful I was worried that there would be too much difference in size between the yarns in #2, but I notice that those blocks actually lay flat, compared to the rumpliness of the one using the same yarn for both the flake and border.

Wow Melissa
I guess there would be quite a difference in weather between Michigan and NC ! Make one of these afghans and it'll always remind you of the winters up this way, no matter where you are .

Kiirs- I used RH country blue, but it is close to the ss in the same shade .

Darski
Just get the yarn and do it ! This is such an easy pattern and turns out really stunning. I goy lots of compliments on mine, from people who usually don't pay much attention to what I'm making .

Cozy- I'd love to see photos too ~

I have a simple question. In all my 30 years of crocheting, I've never successfully done a motifs afghan. Sooooo, I have several hexes done and want to sew tog before I go any further. When I sew the straight edges, how far over do I go? Essentially, I guess I'm wondering when the center sc of the corner 3 scs is stitched and to what. I have a history of little holes in the center where 4 come tog, which is why I never do motifs.
Can someone help, please?

I posted a few pics at my blog to show what my snowflake blocks (http://melissascrochet.blogspot.com/2006/12/crochet-gifts.html)look like. It isn't the best picture though. You can't really see the green around it.

Heather- very pretty, I love the lilac background .

Crochetrae - the way I put mine together, I laid out the first 2 rows of snowflakes, then went clear across the row, joining with sc done in the back loops on the wrong side ,so they were put together in kinda like a zigzag direction, due to the hex shapes -- you know, like up, down, up down ?
I did that going across each row , then repeated going down each row .
I hope this helps you in some way .

That's the way I like putting motif-type things together - it goes so quickly that way !

Good luck . :)

Julie, this is after you had the straight edges already sewn together, right? And you were ready to join rows? So, you didn't whip stitch tog, you did sc? So, instead of holding two motifs right sides tog, they are laying flat on the table, wrong side up? Sorry, I'm trying to get a clear picture here.
Thanks for your help!

I had just started mine last Friday. :) I was thinking as soon as I have enough done to put a row together, I would do that. Then I wan't have so many to put together at the end. I think it will make it go easier for me. I don't really want abig pile of hexagons to do in the end. And putting it together as I go will help motivate me to keep working on this project instead of picking up another one. :D Although I have been working on a few small things in between. I made my daughter some mittens to go with her hat. It has been pretty :wbrr here lately.

I'm doing the same thing. I'm doing all my snowflakes then when I go back to put the color edging on I'll sew it on to the row. It helps to break up the monotony. :)

I do a big batch of snowflakes, then do all the borders. Have only sewn a few together. It seems to go faster for me if I do the factory line method of just keep going on the same step, like I build up my speed in the repetition. I will mention that when I first started making them I had trouble with my first arch of the 6 that make the snowflake looking lopsided. It was because I was not going thru BOTH of the stitches here: When you join the ring and do a slip stitch, that sl st goes thru a back stitch and the one on the hook. The you chain 5 and dbl cr. That dbl cr need to go thru the st at the bottom of the chain 5 and the back joining ring st - both the stitches that were involved in the joining slip stitch. Then I'm putting right sides together and whip stitching shut. Someone else said they were afraid they would get holes in the corners. In this case there are only 3 corners, but in any afghan when you add the last corner in, if there's a hole, just go around the other corners and draw it in as you sew the last one in place.

emwilds, your blanket looks great. I think the neatest part is that the snowflakes just look suspended on a solid background. With the dark color, you can't see the seams to see the actual hexagon. Very pretty.
I just started my last row. I tried to stop at different points and not make the full size, but it just didn't seem big enough with the jagged edges. So I ended up making it the full size.
I only have one week to finish in order to get it to my dad on time. Wish me luck!

I knew I couldn't be the only one wondering if the sides looked to holey or if they were wasted because no one wants to be half covered on their back, should 2 be trying to get under it. Another thing I've thought of was just doing a blank insert, with holes that radiate from the center, you see them made that way a lot. I still have 1 S.F. to border and one to make from scratch. I'm getting so tired, I'm tempted to not even hide the threads and just send it off with a ball of yarn and crochet hook included and telling them to 'go for it', ha, ha, snort!

Okay after reading through this entire thread I am hooked hooked hooked! And will probably be hooking hooking hooking for a longgggg time to get it finished!!! I have never done an afghan before so this is probably a big undertaking, but since its small pieces put together maybe I can handle it. I just think its beautiful in all of the colors y'all have posted. I happen to have an abundance of white and forest green so I think I will try it like that. This will be my first CAL, so hopefully I can contribute something to thread :-). Love all of the pics. I am going to start my first snowflake tonight...wish me luck!

I have been wanting to make this afghan for years but never just got around to it because of other projects.

Maybe I can squeeze this in between making my Christmas Tree afghan that's been sitting in my closet these past 3 years...yikes!

Yeahhhhhhhh! 3 snowflakes made! At that rate I could have the snowflakes done by the end of January and the rest of the year to get the background done. Not that I can only use this in the winter, but it's just the goal that I set for myself...to be finished with it by the end of next year. I did also start on the background on one of them just so I could convince myself that I had made the right thing! The snowflakes look different when they are just sitting there by themselves. Hubby started turning lights off at midnight though so I figured it was time to wrap it up. I will finish that one then continue with the snowflakes. By the way the green looks really nice.

I left a long tail on my border to use to sew 2 snowflake blocks to each other. I found that I could make several, easily at night, while listening to my TV programs. But I do better if I don't go back and forth, but make all S.F.s one day and all borders the next.

Is he real tall or is it just the perspective of the picture? I know it's not done, that there will be more afghan added. I just wonder if it will be long enough when all the rows are done because I had to add another 2 rows to mine, because I realized that while it was just wonderful when I laid under it, I'm 5'6" and my son is 6'1"! grrrrrr.....

Thanks everybody. I'm really enjoying this project. I have nine snowflakes done and two finished blocks which I've sewn together. That really got me excited..seeing it together! Two whole blocks, but I have them draped over the couch to give me a preview of what it will look like when its finished. The couch is a green leather and I think it will be a good match. I have to go to Wal-Mart today to look for more yarn. Wish me luck. I have had this green for YEARS! So doubtful that I will get a match. But I figure if I do half in one color and half in the off color it won't be as bad. I had thought of doing an alternating color..maybe a burgandy, but not really sure how that would look. Anybody every seen an example like that?

Suzy, I've seen one pattern that was either a snowflake or tree ornament of some kind. They alternated the background from dark red to dark green, every other block in each row. This snowflake one might be nice, if you had to alternate colors, to place the rows of color diagonally. Well, you can have fun playing with it!

I have a pic kind of like that of my hubby, where I have 3 strips, not even sewn and they are laid on him to try to judge how it will look. He looks like he is looking to escape in my pic!

It's just the perspective of the picture, he's only 5,3" like me we are height challanged :lol It is running side ways on him in this picture so adding my 4 1/2 more rows it should be well long and wide enough for him.

He closed his eyes like he wouldn't show up in the picture. :devil I had brought it out to show him and he wouldn't give it back :lol so that's what he gets.:lol

I started this one this weekend! Already have 14 motifs done :) I'm using pounder yarn, with Cape Cod Blue for the background. This yarn makes my gauge larger than normal, so they are coming out to 8.5" across.

Do we have a button for this CAL? I was thinking of making one. I'm a button fiend.

Well that is so cool vigilant :-) I've never had a button before and such a pretty one at that! Well I am still a newbie..not even a junior member yet, so I wonder if I can attach it? I will try.

I had a little bit of a scare today with the yarn and thought I might have to start over with another green. I don't think they even make the Super Saver Hunter anymore. But Ebay to the rescue! I ordered two 8 oz skeins. I hope it ends up being enough. I have about 32 ozs in all. If not I did see other people had single skeins for sale, so I will just have to bide my time if none is availabe when I get towards the ends. The price wasn't too bad. 16 oz for $9.50 including shipping. So for a "rare" yarn *hehe* I feel like I got a deal.

Heather, I think you're being able to figure out the 1/2 block was just brilliant. I didn't have anymore steam left to struggle with this and so didn't work as hard as you did on fixing the problem. What I wanted to change about it, was the obvious, the huge cut-out chunk that looks to me like a piece fell out! I changed the first border, enough to remove the sharp corners and 'missing block' look, and turn the area into a soft curve. You can see the pic of how it looks with the bobble on that area on my blog on today (Jan 4) and if anyone is interested, my instructions for adjusting row 1 are on Jan 2. Almost done! :)

vigilant20
January 4th, 2007, 04:41 PM
Half-hexes are a good idea! I was just wondering how to handle those...it would bother me to leave the edges like that. It's too bad the picture on the pattern doesn't show that at all...I'm not sure I would have started this if it had! It's good to know the half-hexes can be done...but I'm leaning towards doing some short rows or something in there while I'm doing the edging.

January 4th, 2007, 05:23 PM
Lynn, I can't tell from your response which note you are responding to, nor if you noticed that at the end of my post I mentioned that I left instructions for what I did to soften the cut-out to a curve on my blog, on Jan 2. Just checking. I wish this board listed which message someone was replying to. Anyway, it may not be what you are wanting to do to yours, just wanted to make sure you did see what I did with it.

I had thought they had finished this without thinking hard enough, but was surprised on checking my many afghan books, that the majority of afghans with this kind of shape finish this way, instead of providing the 1/2 block. You can spot them easy - they always have the edges wrapped around something so you can't see them! When you check the pattern, it confirms it. Sometimes I like the way it looks hanging down a bed, but it depends on the size of the blocks.

January 4th, 2007, 07:06 PM
Cozy, thanks for the info. I went and looked at yours and it looks much more "finished" than the original does. You did a great job on it :)

I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet. I plan on trying to make the snowflake half-hex, and a simple dark color half-hex and see how those look. I have always done plain old rectangular afghans before and I think that's the way I'd like it to stay...hehe.

cozyhomelife
January 4th, 2007, 07:21 PM
Another thing I did was look thru lots of pattenrs and find 1/2 hexes that had a radiating hole pattern, but they were not the same amount of stitches, so one would still have to work it out and my brain was way done on this project. But, if you look at lots of patterns, I'm sure you'll see some like I'm talking about.

hseger
January 4th, 2007, 08:00 PM
Lynn I too figure that's why it doesn't show the edges which is kind of cheating lol. I've only done one other hex afghan and they had a half hex in the pattern so I was surprised this one didn't.

Cozy I think that does soften it and will look real good. I'm hoping my border edge will hide mine. It will still have a little dip where my half hex is but not as severe without it.

I have already made 20 blocks...but i don't know how to join the blocks...:) The instruction says whipstich...i don't know what it is.... is it the same as slip stich....

Annie, when sewing the blocks to each other, you put the 2 good sides together and I whipeed thru both loops of the chains on each. People do it different, so others probably used just one loop or the other, they can tell you what they did. But when you got to join the strips to each other, you can no longer put the 2 right sides together because they are cut-outs of each other and don't match. You have to lay them down in front of you, like on a bed and sit beside it on a chair, I used something flat under the part I was working on to keep it from mixing with the bed linens, anyway, then with the pieces set together, I sewed them together like this, my left hand is actually holding onto an end that I'm sewing in as I go - the right hand would be sewing, but it's stuck taking the pic! You can see the needle catching the 2 loops on the top block and the bottom block, after about 3 stitches, I'll hold the thread I'm sewing in downward and tighten thel the working yarn over it, without scrunching up the block:
I tried to put a pick here from my photobucket account, but it wouldn't let me. So, I added the demo pic to the bottom of my blog post, if you're interested in looking at it :)

Thanks Suzy. The only thing I had to watch when I 'mixed it up' is that I left a 15" tail on the borders to sew them together with. But when I was doing a snowflake, just a few inches which I sewed in as I joined them. Sometimes when I switched from one to the other I'd leave a long tail on the white, wasting yarn, or worse, cut off the blue at only a few inches and have to attach a new yarn :(

cozyhomelife
January 6th, 2007, 03:30 PM
I have a question for those of you who have sewn your strips together. I'm not talking about sewing one flake to another flake, but rather, the actual strip to another strip of snowflakes. I laid mine out and butted the pieces together to sew them. But someone else I know can't figure out why I couldn't just put the right sides together and sew them. It would seem awkward to me to try to maneuver the angles together and still get the hole in the corner set in perfectly. But, I have to admit, I'm not all that experience. So, I thought I'd ask.... how did you sew your strips to each other?

hseger
January 6th, 2007, 04:03 PM
Cozy, I didn't sew them into a strip I'm doing them to the afghan one at a time I was getting aggrevated trying to sew a strip on plus then you would sew 3 sides at a time and have less strings everywhere I just found it easier that way.:hook

cozyhomelife

OK, but the technique is still at question. Are you flopping the block back and forth to put right sides together as you move around the 3 edges, or are you butting it into the cut out area and sewing it flat?

vigilant20
January 6th, 2007, 05:03 PM
I've done it both ways before depending on how the item assembled most easily. I don't think there's a difference.

hseger
January 6th, 2007, 05:23 PM
OH lol sorry, I do flop it to face right sides together as I go around the hex. I haven't ever tried putting it in place then trying to sew it in.

cozyhomelife
January 6th, 2007, 05:49 PM
I don't understand how one can be sure that their holes will come out in the exact right place when using the flop right sides together technique. When I butted the edges and sewed from the top, there were plenty of times that I had to make adjustments and look for any hole that might try to come between the corners, which I could do because I was seeing how it looked as I did it. Maybe it's my lack of experience, but I only feel comfortable putting right sides together on squares! I did sew each snowflake to each other like that, for the strip, though.
It's worth mentioning that after I started doing mine this way, I was in a bookstore and saw an afghan book that they demo'd a joining technique for 6 sides blocks, and they were doing exactly what I was, so I felt relieved about it, that it was an excepted method :) I'm sure both ways work great and the flip way is probably used by most, I just didn't like having the pieces not match when flipped and having to move the edges together and then not being able to see how the hole was falling, it made me feel anxiety while trying to do it.

cozyhomelife
January 13th, 2007, 07:06 PM
Oh yes, I knew it was red and white, but plenty of Americans like anything red, white and blue, so there's no reason why Canadians might not feel the same way about red & white, no?

darski
January 13th, 2007, 07:20 PM
Most Canadians really are not into 'flag waving'.
In fact I admit to flag envy since "Old Glory" is so easily represented in crochet, knit or quilting.

Red and white doesn't do it and the leaf is a challenge as you can't toss one off the way you can with a star and some stripes. People would never assume that red and white was patriotic the way that your red/white and blue is. It seems more like Christmas than July 1st.

I have toyed with trying a Patriotic CAL for Canucks but ...there yah go. See

SuzyQT1968

Well Darski if you do a Patriotic CAL for Canadians I might just have to join. I'm not a Canuck but my DH is and he would be thrilled if I did him something to remind him of home. He is a double Canuck, hehe or something like that. Being from B.C. he favors the Vancouver Canucks in hockey.

I finally tried for my 3D snowflake but it didn't really lend itself to the technique that Krystal designed. :sigh

However, it is 3D; whether that serves any useful purpose is not in question just now.

I am going to keep going until it is big enough for a pet crate for our SPCA

I alway get at least one skein more on everything then it calls for. I can always use the extra to make squares for square exchanges.girls how many balls of yarn and how long is each ball?

This is kind of hard to see since I've put the edging on it.
The best I can say is to start with 4 sc in the ring and work from the middle of the 2 side parts of the flake turning work as you go from side to side. It's hard to describe. lol I'll try to answer any questions.

Thanks for welcoming me! I'm glad there are still people doing this CAL.

Wooo! It takes be about an hour and a half to make one complete hexagon! Is that normal? Well, then again, I am new so maybe not. By the time I get home from work, cook, and settle down to crochet, that's about all the time I have. At this rate I will be lucky to get it completed by 2 months. Maybe I can double up on the weekends! I am determined!

BTW, my hexagons are wavy. Will they straighten out once I join them? I didn't see a gauge test; maybe I'm crocheting to tightly?

I guess since I haven't heard anything back yet I'll just post it and hope it's ok to do.
This is not tested and my first pattern I've written so let me know if there is any problems or you find a better way to do it.

Ch 2
R1) 4 sc in 2nd ch from hook
R2) ch3 turn (Dc, ch 2, Dc) in next 2 sc, Dc in last st
R3) Ch 3 turn, Dc in same st, (2Dc, ch 3, 2Dc) in next 2 ch 3 sps, 2Dc in last st
R4) Ch 3 turn, 2 Dc in same st, (3 DC, ch 3, 3 DC, ch 1) in next 2 ch 3 sps, 3 DC in last st
R5) Ch 3 turn, 3 DC in same st, (4 DC, ch 2, 4 DC, ch 3) in next 2 ch 3 sps, 4 Dc in last st fasten off
R6) Join new color in the last st, ch 2, hdc, dc in dc's, (2 dc, trc in ch 1 on prev round, 2 dc) in ch 2 sp, dc, hdc, hdc in next 3 sts (sc, ch 1, sc) in corner, * hdc, hdc, dc to ch 2 sp, (2 DC, Trc, 2 Dc) in ch sp, Dc, hdc, hdc to corner, (sc, ch 1, sc) in corner* repeat from * to * 1 more time.
R7) ch 3 turn, dc in each dc, (dc, ch 3, dc) in corner around
R8) Ch1 turn, sc in each dc, 3 sc in corner around fasten off.

This is my addaption of the snowflake hex block to make it a half block to fill in the gaps in the sides since the original pattern didn't have one.
