Your welcome suzy let me know if there isn't something right on it. I've never written a pattern so I might have missed something in it or made something not clear. lol.

Have not worked in mine for a week of so. Other things have been nagging at me to get done. Will choose a day a week for this one soon though.

Gardener

I've been making a few blocks a week, and I've got the blocks that I have finished sewn together. I'm planning to make mine a little smaller than the pattern because I want it to be throw size. I think another 8 or 10 blocks will do it. I just need to get motivated to get back to it.

My hubby saw this and wanted a snowflake afghan so i started it friday night . I have 19 squares done now. I was wondering if anyone has this done that knows approximately what size it is finished. He wants it to fit our bed not sure its gonna come close to that.

cozyhomelife
February 5th, 2007, 10:27 PM
Mikki, you didn't mention what size your bed was. But for a full size bed, you'd need about 2 extra rows in length AND in width.

mikki
February 5th, 2007, 10:57 PM
oops lol. yes it's full sized. leave it to my husband to make extra work for me :eek

i haven`t work on it that much but i`ll resume working on it today

mikki
the size of the one heather finished was 50'' × 47'' ithink
and she added half hexagons to close the holes
you need about 70'' by 78'' or so
you need to add more rows :)

Maybe I will work on mine again for a bit this afternoon. This and the Blue star afghan. I am starting to miss them.

its pretty fast and easy
i make the snow flakes without there border (the dark colour ) in less than 15min.
i`m challengeing my self to finish at least the half of it befor i go to sleep
because i wanna finish it before the college starts (it will start at saturday our week end from wed. till fri.)
i`ll make it 6lines with 8 hexagons and 5 lines with 7 hexagons
to fit my bed
happy crocheting every one i`m going to crochet :hug

February 6th, 2007, 01:11 PM
i've picked mine back up this week. i only have to finish the dark portion of 15 snowflakes. the ends of the others are woven in so all i have left is to finish these 15 and put them together. i hope to get this done by the end of the week. i have to be out of town for two days and am not going to be able to work on it while i'm gone.

good luck to the rest of you. keep on working.

i'm not bored with it. i'm working on it bit by bit. i can't just sit and crochet for long periods of time like some folks. i wish i could because i'm still excited about finishing this. i still think it's one of the prettiest afghans i've ever made. i hope you all keep working, too. i can use all the encouragement i can get.

q8_crochet, I think your afghan is going to look really neat. I'm looking forward to seeing it finished.

Mine is just ordinary, white flakes on a blue background. No imagination here at all!

Beaglelady
February 10th, 2007, 10:20 PM
NOt that I really signed up for this CAL. After I finished the TIGGER afghan, I started another one of these for a raffle item to donate. I'm using black for the snowflake and off white for the edging and have two rows done. I do enough hexagons to make a row and stitch them together to form the row. Then I make the next set, make the row and join them. This way I won't have to do all the stitching at the end.
Looks pretty good! I see a couple of others are reversing it as well.

Wooohoo finally done!!! It's in the wash now to make it a bit softer. Of course I have nightmares of it coming out unravelled. It's my first afghan ever, so I am a bit overprotective of it hehe. I gave myself 2 months to do it and it took me just over a month so I feel good about my progress. I got faster and faster as time went on. Definitely gave me the confidence to try another afghan real soon.

In RH Hunter and White:

A close up of snowflake and the edging. I hadn't seen another shot of the edging that I can recall. It was really easy to do and I like the look. I think I will use it again on another project.

I ended up be okay with the "open" blocks. Or maybe I was too lazy to do anymore!!!! But I did appreciate heather writing the pattern out.

I love the pink Sue. Hang in there. I got a bit stalled at 5 too, but got myself in gear and actually finished the last 4 in a weekend. Then a couple of more nights to sew them together. The edging didn't take as much time as I thought it would. You will get it done :-)

Teacat, I've been working on this one since the CAL started and I've still got quite a ways to go. I started out making complete hexagons and sewing them together as I went. I have nearly enough for a good sized throw and I may stop at that, rather than going on to complete a larger afghan.

I'm plugging along. I'm doing the borders around 3 snowflakes per night. Sadly, that is all I have time for during the week. Hopefully I will make alot over the weekend. Question: How do you join them together? It says whipstitch but I have never done that before (I've never made anything this big). I've looked online but what I see does not look to sturdy. Should I be worried that the could come apart easily over time?

hseger
March 10th, 2007, 03:15 AM
Karla I whipstitched mine and it's very sturdy. I just held the hexes front sides together and whipstitched through the back loops only. You could do a single crochet or slip st through the back loops if you don't mind the bulky ridge it causes.
Try looking at this tutorial here (http://crochet.about.com/library/weekly/aa010999.htm) for whipstitching.

I hold 2 hexagons right sides together, and starting with the middle sc in the corner, whipstitch across to the middle sc in next corner. Finish off and weave in ends. I do this until I have a complete row done.
Then when I have 2 rows done, I whipstitch those together. I do the rows 1 at a time and add them on as I go. I've used the backloops only.
This current one, I'm going through both loops. As long as you leave about 6" tail on either end and weave them a couple of inches one way and come back 1-2" inches, it should not come undone.

Hey everybody, I haven't been on much, but I started working on this last week or so...maybe two weeks ago. Annnyway. I've got 23 of the "squares" done, or three and a half rows. :)
I'm useing blue for the outside with a soft green and a soft pink for the snow flakes, and I'm not putting a snowflake in every square, but leaving some space, with solid blue squares.
It's a fun project, but it's starting to warm up a lot here (tomorrow it's supposed to be 80 degrees!) so it's a little silly, but much fun.

I know there is someone else here working on a reverse one. I've washed and dried it. The black seems to be picking up what ever lint falls it's way. Isn't that the way though? Our town has a 'family fun day' in September. Something the Governor at the time put in place a few years ago for every town in the state to have one. It will be displayed at different fund raisers over the months and then raffled off in Sept.
I'm starting another to donate but not this pattern.

Ok ladies....I donated the black and white one for a donation and then made a color block 9-patch afghan (pic in my photobucket right now - will be posting soon.) Anyhow I made a pillow to go with it and the lady asked me if I could make a pillow with the snowflake pattern. So I did. I made the pillow reversable. Black background on one side, off-white on the other.

Wow, I cant believe this thread was started so long ago! I found it today as I was looking for a hexagon pattern booklet, and just fell in love with it..especially this close to the holidays and the cold weather. Have one snowflake down, had to restart it a few times to get it right (haven't made granny square type things in AGES) ..about how big are yours? Just the white of mine is about 6 inches point to point, the picture looks a bit different from what Im doing. Hopefully the background will help it out a bit.

Sorry I haven't posted in a while. I looked for the snowflakes I had made when I first joined this cal, but I couldn't. I decided to start a new one. I'm using white for the snowflakes and country rose for the border. I started last night and I almost have my 1st snowflake done. I make the snowflake then add the border. I'm also going to sew them together as I make them. Maybe this time I won't loose them. When I find my other snowflakes, I'll finish that afghan too. I posted this in the Sky CAL, but it's about this pattern, so I am posting it here too

OK. This snowflake afghan has been taunting me, so I was bound and determined to get it today, no matter what!!!

I figured the first step was to get the six sided snowflake itself down.

So, after about 3 tries, it clicked in my head. I finally 'got' the 'pattern' within the pattern, if that makes any sense.

I was SO excited!!!! :dance go me :dance go me :dance go me :dance

and then...

at the end of the 4th row

I noticed something...

JulieKay
December 14th, 2007, 03:24 PM
Bean -it looks like you have the general direction of the pattern, but i think where you got a little off track was clear back at the beginning-- start it over and make sure you start with the right number of chains before joining, then when you do your first round , do your dc,ch2,dc around, and join to the beginning chain . You should have 6 chain 2 openings at this point. That is where it got messed up, you have 7, so go back to the beginning and try it over so that it has 6 chain 2 spaces, then each round after that should come out fine and dandy .

Now, a few questions.

Is that what it is supposed to look like before the background?

Do you think a J kook made it look funky?

Did anyone else make all the snowflakes first and then go back and put the background on?

Gardener
December 14th, 2007, 04:56 PM
:clap WTG!!!

Mine looked kind of shapeless until I added the background.

I did 4 or 5 snowflakes and then added borders. It got boring just doing snowflakes, and also I didn't want to be stuck having dozens of hexagons to sew together at the end. I finished some and sewed them together and then made some more.

I also posted this in the help forum, but it is probably more appropriate here.

I am having trouble with the Rnd 7 and 8.

Rnd 7 states "Ch 3 (first dc), *(dc, ch3, dc) in ch 1 sp, dc in each of next 13 sts, repeat from * 4 times; (dc, ch 3, dc) in last ch 1 sp, dc in each of next 12 sts, sl st in top of ch-3.

Then Rnd 8 says, " Ch 1, sc in first st, sc in next st, * 3 sc in ch 3 sp, sc in each of next 15 sts, repeat from *4 times: 3 sc in last ch-3 sp, sc in each of next 13 sts, sl st in bec sc.

Here is my issue, the first ch 3 (first dc) *dc, ch3, dc) hole is MUCH bigger than the other ch 3 holes that I make in round 7. What I did is ch 3, ch 3 more and then dc in the ch 1 sp. So, essentially 6 sc and a dc. Is that right??????? Could it be that my chain 6 is just too loose?

Then I get confused with the Rnd 8 ch 1, sc in first st, sc in next st and then 3 sc in ch 3 sp, but when I start the c1 and sc in first st, I am already on top of the ch 3 space. And it seems to make the round 7 space bigger.

If anyone has any advice for me, I would greatly appreciate it! This is my first afghan and I am VERY excited!:yay

I also posted this in the help forum, but it is probably more appropriate here.

I am having trouble with the Rnd 7 and 8.

I think I understand the problem with Rnd 7 - think you ch too many at the beginning. You should ch 3 - this counts as the final dc when you have finished the rnd.
Then you should (dc,ch3,dc) in the first ch-sp of Rnd 6.
See if that helps.....

I'll see if I can figure out the problem with Rnd 8 in a bit.
Let me know if Rnd 7 works first.

I think you are right, that chain 3 becomes the last DC because the last 'row' is dc 12 and then into the top of the chain 3 and thus making the correct number on that side. THANK you sooo much! That also then fixes round 8! Amazing what happens when you follow the pattern as written!

I'm jumping in a little late (I'm new here). I feel in love with this afghan the minute I saw it and couldn't help but start it. I almost didnt as it looks a little advaced for me (I'm sort of an old newbie. I was taught to crochet as a kid and 10 years later I am getting back into it) Its not a complex as I had thought and thanks to about.com I haven't had any real problems.

I have 6 complex hexagons (3 stitched together) and somewhere around 5 to 7 snowflakes ready for the blue to be added.

I'm using Red Heart Super Saver yarn in Aran and Windsor Blue. The Aran is a little tan for my tastes but its not too noticable once the blue is added. I bought the yarn for an easier pattern but started this one around 3 am and this was all I had.

When I finish this one I think I will make another with higher quality yarn. I really am enjoying the pattern. It seemes to work up quickly and the few people who have seen it keep saying how amazing it is. I can see this one becoming a favorite for gifts and charity.

One question: Everyone's hexagons look like they lay flat here but mine are have quite a bit of curl or wave to them. The snowflakes seem fine but when I add the blue they get curly. I saw someone say that once stitched together they are ok if they have a bit of wave but mine have more than a bit! The few I stitched together do seem ok but I wont know until I stitch a few more on. How do I get rid of the waves?

msmusic
February 2nd, 2008, 03:58 PM
Mine are wavy, too, but I have stitched together one row of 7 and they start to lay more flat as you join them. Try stitching a few rows together and see how it turns out.

Ashley_R_CPST

Thats sort of what I'm doing. I'm actually planning on going around one hexagon completely and seeing if it looks ok once it is pulled from every side at once. I think it will be ok.

I have been working on this afghan for a year and a half, but still am not quite finished. I am sewing together as I go, and need only two more motifs to finish the main part of the afghan. I haven't touched it in months though. My hexagons were quite wavy until I sewed them together.

I have 8 together now and they look perfect. I'm a little worried that the sides of the afghan will be wave but if it is it is. Its so pretty, i keep trying to snuggle under my mini afghan.

OH wow!! I'm shocked this thread is still going! I started my Snowflake afghan 2 years ago. Got some of the white snowflakes done, did a few here and there, but due to life and it's experiences, didn't work on it as much as I would have liked.

Monday, I bought the background yarn I plan to use. It's RH Williamsburg Print.

I have a few of the blocks done, just haven't taken photos. Will post photos in a day or two.

I really like how it is turning out, though. Wish I'd had worked on it more sooner.

amyquilt
July 9th, 2008, 01:30 PM
:clap WTG!!!

Mine looked kind of shapeless until I added the background.

I did 4 or 5 snowflakes and then added borders. It got boring just doing snowflakes, and also I didn't want to be stuck having dozens of hexagons to sew together at the end. I finished some and sewed them together and then made some more.

I made about 18 snowflakes over the past 2 years...couldn't decide on a background yarn to use. FINALLY go it Monday(in previous post). Last night, did 3 backgrounds and now I plan to sew them together before doing more. I think alternating between snowflakes, doing bgs and then sewing together, helps break monotony.

I'm still working on this one too, although I am slightly ashamed to admit it. I started it in September of 2006, and at that time, I was planning to have it finished by Christmas. I need to make about 5 more squares and finish sewing everything together. Then I can start the border. Maybe by this Christmas........

I just started the snowflake afghan yesterday, I have 5 snowflakes done so far. I think it will be quicker to make all the snowflakes first and then go back and fill in with the background.

I'm using caron one pound for the snowflakes and the background. The background is light blue (my sister likes softer, lighter colors) and the snowflakes are white.

Mine is in a plastic bin in the basement. I think I have all the yarn together but I am not sure. It is a really pretty afghan and I really liked the color it got. It was Red Heart Brick Red or soemthing like that. I have used the white for other things so, when I pick it up again I will need to get more white.
Right now I am making an Ohio State afghan and then I have a Steelers ghan that I want to make hubby for Christmas. Then, maybe, just maybe, this will get in my UFO's and get done.

Hi all!
I just found this thread, and have been thinking of starting the afghan. For those of you who have started it, how do you think it would work with chunky yarn? I have a ton of white Softee Chunky...I'm thinking I would use a 6 or 6.5 hook, and I probably wouldn't have to make as many as if I were using ww. What do you think?

Gardener
September 14th, 2008, 04:41 PM
I think it should work. I have no clue about hook sizes, but once you have one motif made, you'll be able to tell if you you like the way it turned out.

September 15th, 2008, 11:08 PM

k so, Ive seen this online and I have been thinking and trolling over patterns for an afghan. I want one for my son (due in Dec) and I thought this would be cute...sized down baby style. Curious if anyone has any ideas how many motifs I would need. Good luck Hildy48. I sure hope you are a more focused crocheter than I am. You have a definite goal, which probably helps keep you on track.
I started this afghan 2 years ago, made all the motifs in a few weeks and put them away. I took them out a few weeks ago and started sewing them together. I wish I had sewn them together in strips when I made them, because I'm finding this part of the process really tedious. I enjoyed making the motifs, but not this part.

If I was going to make the snowflake afghan, the pattern says you have to use light worsted weight yarn. Is this sport weight yarn, or could I use something like caron simply soft?

Gardener
October 12th, 2008, 03:56 PM
I used regular worsted weight yarn, but I didn't need as many motifs to get a good sized afghan. I think simply soft would work well for this pattern. I wouldn't use sport weight yarn for an adult sized afghan as it seems to delicate to me, but that is just a personal opinion.

Well, here it is two weeks left to get this afghan finished by the deadline! I've done the math and realized that there are not enough hours in the day to get it done on time. So, :idea go to plan two; contribute an afghan that is already complete!

I really like this afghan and I plan to finish it, but having to crunch to get it done was taking the joy out of making it. :( :juggle Now I can work at my own pace and maybe contribute to some of the charity projects that a lot of you are working on.

Hi everyone ! I would like to be in on this too. I did not know there was a CAL for this. I have hit a "bump" in mine. I have finished all of the snowflake middles and almost half with the darker "border" I have two questions:

1. Is anyone doing this and their "hexagons" kind of fold or are wavy? Like a tension issue but I am using WW yarn with an I hook.

2. How to stitch them together? I have never stitched together squares or any thing before so I'm not confident in my whipstitching abilities but would rather do the single crochet method. How do you get a running stitch so you don't have to end off and restart every so often..... does this make sense?

Thanks Hildy for making me aware of this CAL. Good luck to all making this!

This is a beautiful, easy aghan to make so, I'm hoping there will still be others who will join this CAL. :hook

It is fun to see other's progress, and colors choices. If you go back and read the earlier posts, it will answer some of your concerns such as the wavyness of the motifs (they straighten out when sewn together.) :yes

I have 6 more snowflakes to go. Then I have 26 borders to crochet.

Well, I haven't gotten any more than 37 snowflakes done in the two plus years since I started it, but life has settled down to the point that I'm ready to pick it back up again.

My motifs are sort of wavy as well and I know my tension is proper. At first I thought I'd steam them using a press cloth, but I think I'll join them and then wash it. If it looks great, Mom gets it. If it doesn't, it stays here.

Somewhere in this ever so lengthy (but fun!) thread someone gave directions for squaring up the areas on the edge motifs so there is a straight edge all the way around the afghan. When I have the time, I'll go back through all of the posts and find it again.

Heck, I'll go through it again just to see all the beautiful combinations that everyone used on this afghan!:yay
