Hey, Sassy!
How did your half hexes turn out? I haven't tried making them yet.
I think I'll give this to my youngest sister. I can start a new tradition of making each of my sisters a Christmas afghan. This way I almost have this year's done!:hook

KellieD,
The half hexes turned out good- they work up super fast. I made a few minor changes to the pattern (can't remember as I don't have one in front of me right now). I haven't attached the coloroed border yet, but that will be done sson.

You mean to tell me that you have finished the whole afghan already? That was fast and I bow to your greatness!
I did get some of the strips joined last night and I am about 24 motifs short. If I do two a day.................

LOL, oh no no, I'm no where near that fast. I meant I hadn't put the colored border on the half-hexes yet.
You have dedication to do 2 a day! Between life and sleep, I haven't had much time to work on any lately. I will probably break it out tonight, though, and work on a few more.

Wow! Thanks for the idea. I'm about 1/3 completely done with mine. So, maybe I can get in 1 complete hex a day and before I know it, it will be done.

i think that if I make this again, I will join and tuck ends as each motif is completed. What a whole lot less tedious work at the end and I'll feel like I'm making some real progress.
I'm a very early riser (4am) and DH doesn't wake up until about 7am. It isn't like I can do any heavy housework or anything before he gets up so it gives me three full hours to work on a project.:crocheting
Ahem. I mean if a book doesn't capture my interest first.:book

Wow, I hadn't realized it had been so long since I came to the boards! I just wanted to check in since I had started this CAL. Here's the finished afghan:

Vigilant20, thanks for posting a picture of what (someday) my afghan will look like finished. Hope springs eternal!!
After joining, my motifs were still wavy so I used a damp press cloth and my steam iron. It did the trick!

I am on the homeward stretch!! All the motifs that I have made have been joined together and as I finish more I am joining them and tucking the ends.
I have had to use little mind tricks to get the motifs made. Doing something else between the making of the snowflake and the border breaks it up into manageable time, counting to ten while doing stitches and stopping for a sip of wine or tea in between, even reading a few pages of a book if my hands get cramped or it is starting to feel more like a chore than a pleasure. Hey, whatever it takes to get it done. Heaven knows I'm going to need all of the tricks when I start on the border!

Thanks vigilant20 for the picture. It is inspiring. I had to take a break and make something I could finish quickly, so I made baby hats. Now I'm ready to get working on this afghan and get it done! This one is promised, but it will be so hard to part with it, but there are two more I want to do after this one. I have so many afghans and I keep making more - isn't crocheting a great addiction!!

Vigilant20, your afghan is just beautiful. Its supposed to snow here today...maybe that will motivate me to sew the rest of my motifs together and start the border.
I am ashamed to say that my motifs have been sitting around waiting for me to assemble them for over a year........sigh...........I hate sewing things together!!!

Theresa, they are both pretty! I think I like the blue better, though. Although on my screen it looks sort of purple-ish and now I'm thinking if I ever get mine done maybe, just maybe, I'll make one in purple! LoL
Bad news- I have not worked on this afghan in a few weeks. Good news- I found some motifs I worked one night while watching Jay Leno that I had completely forgotten about! There were 6, so I now have enough to add 2 more rows. :clap

Great work Theresa- those are awesome! On the screen, the blue looks best. But if the burgundy is a deep burgundy, not red like it looks on the screen, I think it would be a better choice.

Mine is done in the deep blue as well with winter white for the snowflakes. I wanted it to look like snow in the midnight sky.
I'm making mine 13 motifs shy of what the pattern calls for. I'm only three motifs away from starting the border!:hook
Everyday Crochet
November 19th, 2008, 10:36 AM
Good for you Kellie!
Are you making it smaller for a particular reason? I used a size bigger hook for I was wondering if that will affect my size much or not.
KellieD
November 19th, 2008, 05:38 PM
There are a couple of reasons I made it smaller.
One, I'm tired of it!!
Two, that size is still a really good sized cuddle quilt.
I'm on the last motif so as soon as I attach it, I'll let you know the overall measurements before the border.
I used a G hook, but if I do it again I will use an I hook. A larger hook does make it a bit larger, but I think that a bit looser would lay better. I'm having to steam every motif......

KellieD
November 20th, 2008, 05:34 PM
I was congratulating myself on being done, held it up and realized that I have one more strip of seven to make! Either that or cut off a row of six.
Either one makes me cringe. I'm going to take the rest of the day off and start fresh tomorrow.
Doesn't it look so much cooler sewn together than it did as strips?
Congratulations on your first of many!:yay

KellieD
November 25th, 2008, 03:04 PM
Well, after three attempts at the half hexes, I still can't figure out where I went wrong. It has something to do with the DC not matching the number of DC that I'll be sewing to. I kept coming up short by two on each side which, of course, I did not discover until all the ends were tucked in. Frustration has won. If I were keeping this, I'd hash it out. Since it is going to my sister, she'll never know what I tried to do (and failed miserably at).
The good news is that I now get to start the border and it looks killer good!:woo:woo

this is scary. I am at 45 centers done. I think I will stop and do one half hex to see if I can.
hoppinhooks
November 25th, 2008, 03:26 PM
There is a problem with the half hex pattern as written. You need to ad a ch 1 between the first and second set of shells in round 4 and in round five you need to add ch 3 between first and second set of shells. Just like in the reg snowflake pattern. Somehow these steps were omitted in the half hex pattern. This might help. Mine came out fine.
dilyca2006
November 25th, 2008, 04:08 PM
someone wrote up a pattern for half hexes?? What post is it in? Not that I will do them, but, it is nice to know that there is a pattern for them if I would want to.
I may, someday, pick up my yarn for this one and work on it again. I may have to get more yarn for the border of the snowflake cause I think I used some of it for something else.

Don't feel too badly about coming to a standstill on yours. I started mine in 2004, found this CAL in 2006 and here, years later, I'm finally finishing up!
I'm making myself do a little bit each time I sit down. Waiting for the coffeepot to finish, I crochet. Sitting down for a short break (with timer), I crochet. Called the husband for dinner but he hasn't made it to the kitchen yet, I crochet. A few stitches here and there really do add up over time.

Hey everyone I just wanted to update my progress on the snowflake afghan, I have 37 centers done and 1 on the hook so almost 38!! That leaves me with what only 21 more to go? Oh yeah and then I have to do the blue part and sew them together and add the border! Yikes I am never going to have this done in time for Christmas as a gift for my sister.
Plus she really wanted pastel blue and white for the snowflakes because she likes that icy look and now I'm afraid the snowflakes aren't going to stand out at all.
I need to stop sitting in front of the computer so much and do more crochet!

I have every confidence that you'll be able to finish it by Christmas!
One thing I wish I had done differently was to tuck the ends on each motif as I finished it, rather than tucking 40 or so one right after the other.
Teresa, I like how it turned out with the H hook better than with a G hook.

I have noticed that with Red Heart that from time to time the yarn does feel different, the colors are not always the same. Even if it has the same dye lot. Even within the skein the yarn will feel different from time to time. I put up with it though cause it is a less expensive yarn and I can get more (stash always needs to be built up.. right....:lol). I can also make more for my money.

I usually compete my blankets at the county and state fairs. I get a lot of request for charitable donations so depending on how they do at the fair, the winners often get donated to good causes for raffles or auctions. Generally the rest get given away at Christmas. But I've kept my state winners in the past. I can't quite stand to part with those ones! ;)
