OK, here's the truth...I LOVE these Crochet-alongs, but I can't start ANY new projects, because I'm planning already for Xmas presents.
I have 2 afghans to make that are the same, both are flowers. And I LOVE flowers - the other great joy in my life is gardening!
So I was wondering if anyone out there would like to join me in a "flower-themed" crochet-along? You can make bookmarks, clothing, afghans, doilies....whatever is YOUR thing.
I am making a Gerber Daisy Afghan for each of my girls - I figure I have about 60 grannies to make, then joining, then two borders...I'll be here awhile, you know?
Here's a picture...before the lightning gets me....

Very pretty work Krystal.. I like your color choices. The outer band of the squares looks like RH Watercolors?

Krystal, I love your Gerber squares!!! You know that already. I made one daisy tonight. It seemed to take a while, was puckery and heavy. Is that how yours is? I really want to make that afghan also. I love flowers too. I am in the middle of the snowflake afghan, but I should be finished with it in another week, 2 at the most. What yarn did you use for the border? I also love it. I would love to do a CAL!
You can find the pattern here.

This CAL is for ANYTHING flowery, so it doesn't have to be the Gerber Daisy I'm doing....but for those who asked, it is a free pattern here:
http://home.earthlink.net/~440me/id4.html
I have a variety of colors in the centers and flowers, and it *is* RH Watercolor in the border of the square and used to join. There is a darker version of Watercolor called Sage Mary, too - grape & dk sage and light tan.
Kathryn - YES, mine is bulky, puckery and HEAVY. But once I joined the squares, they seem to be behaving better. It takes me about an hour to do each square (maybe more?) and with my modifications, I think they came out to be 10" instead of the 12 or so in the pattern. And I only used one color for the petals, not two.
Welcome Everyone! I'm so happy to have friends on my journey!

As a fellow flower lover:manyheart -I'm in. I've been wanting to do the flower scarf from S&B Happy Hooker. This is just the push I need. Unless I find something else flowery that tickles my fancy;) .
OOOO I just checked your scarf links & the 1st one is prettier than the S&BHH one. I think I'm already feeling tickled.

I would love to learn how to make stand-alone flowers... sort of sculptural (3-D)... that I can use on bags, hats or even as pins. I;ve been searching the internet for patterns or ideas of flowers that are semi-realistic looking. I've never been in a CAL.. not sure just what is involved???

Krystal, I liked the one color better than two for the petals also. I didn't add the leaves yet because the only green I have on hand (that I might use) is light sage and I'm not sure if that is what I want to use or if I want to mix my shades of leaves. I think I'll play around with it and see.

I want to join as I love flowers, gardening, and love that square!I am going to try it now,as I have pale mauve pink, pale green and white yarn waiting to be made into something.Maybe I will try to make a purse out of the squares for my mother's birthday next month. Leslie

JCB - I will look for some standalone flowers, but you might want to look on www.crochetpatterncentral.com (http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com) and look in the directory under flowers. I thought I remembered seeing those there.
Flowers are here: http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/directory/flowers.php

I've made 1 square and I love it !!! It has taken me almost all day to "tweek" the pattern to my satisfaction. I'm not big on the "3dc, chain 3" holes in my afghans. (I don't like toes coming through!) So, mine has 2 rows of dc's for the background. I may put 3 rows if I'm sure I will have enough of the yarn. I don't want to run out. I think this one will turn out beautiful! It will just take longer than the others. That's ok, the finished product will be worth the effort!
Krystal16
July 11th, 2006, 08:31 PM
Yes, I don't really like all the holes either, but I didn't realize that until I had a couple squares done....too late now!

Ok, well, I take back what I said about having 1 square done. I frogged it back and did the background as directed for 5 rows and did 1 row of a border. I absolutely love it!!! I can't wait to start on another square. At 1 square per day I should have enough squares by next time this year. Just kidding, the next ones should go much faster being I've figured out what I'm doing.
I'd love to make a bookmark myself - just no time. I can't wait to see what each of you come up with. Have fun and good night.

Can I play Too? I LOVE:manyheart Patterns with flowers in them, and I have downloaded a whole file of them! Now would be a great opportunity to make some ! I love these crochet along because you get to know the other woman in the crochet along a Little better then if they just say "Beautiful scarf !I love the color you chose "etc! Ladycrochat, Please do (come play with us)! The more the merrier!! So, what are you going to make? Hard decision, I know!
I'm coming along nicely. I have 2 squares done. I know that's not much, but it took me forever to pick my colors and figure out the pattern. (Plus, I'm in the middle of the Snowflake afghan and I am trying to only work on it when I am alone. That doesn't happen very often. That's the price you pay when your kids live so close to you!!! I wouldn't have it any other way.
Well, back to the hook! Square are a great thing to make in this heat!
Krystal16
July 13th, 2006, 06:15 PM
I have 7 squares done, and I have a goal to make one each night. My 7YO daughter helped pick out the pattern and colors for her afghan, but I'm only working on it now when she's in bed. I'm hoping she forgets about it (one can hope, right?) and it will be a surprise for her & her sister (who is also getting one, but a full size) for Xmas. I have my "daytime" projects, plus just got some wonderful yarn as a present and my fingers are ITCHING to start into them....
I looked through all my books, but I didn't find the "right" pattern, but I think I decided to use that yarn (it is SOOO nice - Bernat Denimstyle) for my OWN afghan for my bed - a Prairie Star.
As for joining, PLEASE - everyone who wants to can join!!!
Anyone else making progress?

Ok, so I started my doily last night, and I thought "Hey, I'll be done in no time! This is only a smallish doily! I'll make LOTS of flowery things in this CAL!" In the past I have made afghans that cover queen sized beds -so I wasn't concerned........well I guess this doily is a bit harder than I thought.. I chose to make my flowers out of yellow, light blue, lilac and hot pink.....the doily itself will be in white and medium green...so far I have two flowers made and attatched....that represents one and a half hour's work!!!:eek , I still have 26 flowers to make...I am hoping the work goes faster once I learn the pattern by heart.....My camera is charging...so I will show you my slow but steady progress sometime later today.....

Ok, Here is what I have so far....The pattern tells me to make eight of these flowers in different colors and attach them in a ring first, then I have to work the inside part of the doily, I am not sure why, but I guess they have their reasons!
http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h157/DKousmat58/Crochet/DCAM0097.jpg

Debbie - I'm from south of Buffalo - waaaaay on the other side of the state! Right now we're suffering from the lake humidity....90* and 100% humidity.
I have 8 squares done...but I have the RH Cornmeal in hand now so will be making a yellow one tonight. What *is* it about a new yarn or new pattern that just makes it that much more exciting. My camera is on the fritz, but once I get that working and some yellow flowers, I'll start joining and take a pic. I like to do stuff as I go, can't STAND to join, join, join, weave, weave, weave....
I like those thread flowers, Debbie - way to go!
Krystal16
July 15th, 2006, 03:15 PM
Wow, this cornmeal is a WONDERFUL color! It's such a nice, muted hue of yellow. It is PERFECT for what I want here. Haven't finished the square, but will pic soon...

I'm busy working on a flower scarf-purple velour I found a thrift store while on vacation in Clearlake, CA. I've got to find some green for leaves to go with it.
Krystal16
July 15th, 2006, 09:55 PM
ooh, purple velour and green flowers - how pretty!
Kathryn, you are a machine! My time is severely restricted by 4 kids, and then I can't work on this until she is asleep. I think I am going to join one row (4 squares) for her tonight instead of a new square. I just have to go back and find my post to remember my "mistake" joining technique!
Won't get much done tomorrow, I'm afraid - I'll be gone all day. Maybe I'll take the yarn with me in the car. At least there's air conditioning in there!
I started a preemie blanket today - all of my WIPs are going to take a long time to finish, so that will help my need for completion. I'm such a fool sometimes! :rofl
So, do any of you find C'villers also have a garden? I have several - veggie and flowers, but the bugs are out en masse this year, especially the japanese beetles and slugs. I've done everything else, now it's time for the nasty spray...it's the only thing that gets them. Now, if it will only NOT rain for a day so I can do that....
I've been using scraps of yellow, tan and brown for my centers. I'm usually MUCH more fussy when it comes to colors, but I'm trying to relax my need for uniformity a little!
Homebody
July 16th, 2006, 04:10 AM
Krystal, No, no garden. I did that years ago, but we have so many good fruit and vegetable stands around and I'm just not blessed with a green thumb.
We are supposed to reach almost 100 degrees today. I will be inside crocheting! Just too hot to do anything else!
Krystal16
July 17th, 2006, 02:31 PM
So, how is everyone progressing?
I have 10 squares done, and enough of each color that I've begun to put together some squares and hope to get 2 rows put together, then take a pic. It's unbearably hot and humid here, and very few people actually have A/C, so it's not like I'm going to go out and start another afghan!
OK, ladies - let's see what you've got!
Ladycrochat
July 18th, 2006, 06:49 PM
I have completed the inner part of my doily, and the inner ring of flowers, I am now working on the middle part of the doily, I will post pictures tomorrow, as it is now night, and dark, and my camera does not have a flash thing so I need sunlight to get a good photo....working slowly but steadily!:hook
Krystal16
July 18th, 2006, 08:22 PM
Great job, Debbie!
I have joined two rows of my Gerber Daisy Afghan (4x2) but it bumps and bubbles horribly. I'm not a great "frogger" so I'm hoping that after all are joined and is washed and dried it will tame down..... The square itself is pretty wavy, but I was hoping that joining it would fix all that.
BUT, I did find a nice subtle pink to add - I wasn't really liking my pink that I had in there. I'll just sorta mix it in....
Homebody
July 18th, 2006, 11:19 PM
I found a nice light rose stashed away that I think I might use. I also have a pink and a darker rose. I have a blue and a lavender one finished. I am also considering a purple I have on hand. I don't think I will piece any together until I have them finished so I can see where I want them.
Debbie, I can't wait to see your pics!
Krystal, I also had 4 children. I know how busy you are!! Today is my husbands birthday so the gang was all over. ?-Do you think the bumps & bubbles are from piecing it or the squares themselves?

Krystal16
July 19th, 2006, 08:57 AM
Debbie, your doily is beautiful - what a centerpiece that will make!
Kathryn, I'm not sure what it's due to. I will whipstitch the couple I have here and see how it goes, because I used my "mistake" joining method, and it *is* a bit heavy. If those lie flatter, I'll frog my joining and just whipstitch them together, see if it helps.
I didn't get my square done last night - too much else to do!
Ladycrochat
July 19th, 2006, 09:01 AM
Thank you Kathryn and Krystal! It is tougher than I thought to work with that little itty bitty thread! lol.....:lol But it is coming along! It is now about 8 inches in diameter, and I still have a ways to go yet, so I know it will be very large when it is finished...No plans yet as to what I will do with it Kathryn.....are you making the same afghan that Krystal is making? And I hope your husband had a great birthday! My eldest son's birthday is next Saturday! Krystal, can you post a photo of the problem? Are you getting the proper gauge? Maybe your hook is too big or too small and by changing the size you can fix the problem.....better to change it now before you make more squares!!!:eek
Homebody
July 19th, 2006, 09:10 AM
Debbie, Yes, Krystal and I are making the same afghan. I saw hers and just had to have one! I'm not getting too far as I am working diligently on my snowflake afghan. It is almost finished-10 more snowflakes to go and then piece together my strips!
I think he enjoyed his birthday. The grandchildren made pictures and cards and taped them up around the house. My daughter also put up balloons to make it more festive. It put a smile on his face after a long day at work.
Krystal16
July 19th, 2006, 02:57 PM
Debbie - honestly, my gauge is good. I'm really careful about it. The square itself is quite bulky, so that's likely part of the problem. Also, I joined it using a different method, and that might be another part of the problem. I can't post a pic now, I'm expecting company any minute. I am going to make more squares and join those with whipstitch and see if it's better. Then I'll frog what I've done and rejoin if I need to. I'm not too worried at this point - it's an afghan and will stretch and relax where it needs to as it washes.
Red heart is 2/$3 at my local ACMoore, can't wait to go there. I just got an invite to a wedding shower - I am diligently searching my pattern books for something that will look good in those colors. This one might have to sit on the burner while I'm doing that one - shower in 3 weeks....black, charcoal, gray, red....should be easy to match, at least....
Ladycrochat
July 19th, 2006, 06:29 PM
Krystal, I see from your signature line that you like to make afghans, so I guess you know what you are doing and that the squares will relax and settle down.......I would just hate to see you going and going only to have the afghan less than spectacular in the end.....LOL so you will go to a shower soon? Well then, lucky you! I am sure the Bride to be will receive a lovely gift straight from your hooks! I too, work on my doily little by little. Have lots of UFO's that have to get done....like a hobo bag I made for my daughter...the crocheting is all done, but I still have to line it....(UGH!) I HATE sewing! And she is anxious to get her bag! So, we can take our time with this, more people will come and join up, some will stay make something and then go, that is what is great with these CALS, no rules or time limits!

July 20th, 2006, 06:35 AM

OK, I washed my afghan rows, but they're still in the washer - will go throw them in the dryer now and see if the bumps and lumps go away. If not, I'm frogging the joining and seeing how it goes with a whipstitch.
Krystal16
July 28th, 2006, 11:28 PM
I washed and dried them, and they are almost perfectly flat - the remaining bubble is just from having so many stitches in the daisy, and the weight of the rest of the blanket will pull that out. I'm on my way again!!! As soon as I finish my MAM, that is!

Did you see what today's free pattern was on Annie's Attic? Les Fleurs doily!!! I wonder if we'll have anyone else join us now?
Only 5 more motifs to do on my MAM, but each takes me a day, then to join. I'll be back here in a week, or less!

Oh, I really want to join! This will be my first CAL. :yay
Last evening I started a new afghan called "Fresh as a Daisy". It is in the leaflet titled "Our Best Afghans A to Z".
I'm using Caron worsted acrylic yarn.
It will be 12 squares by 9 squares - a total of 108. I have 16 done already. :clap
This will be a gift for a friend who is expecting her first baby, due in March.
Krystal16
August 4th, 2006, 09:35 AM
Welcome, Barbara Jean!
I'll add you to the list, of course!
I have my LAST MAM strip to do today, then assembly tomorrow. Of course, I am going to run out of yarn! I forgot that I shipped one of my RHSS black skeins to Coats & Clark, and that was to be for this MAM. DH will stop tonight to get the extra skein if I need it. UGH!
The Gerber Daisy afghan, I have decided that it will be TOO heavy to do for the full sized bed. I have been messing around with my own design for a daisy-looking pattern that's more like a kid would have drawn it (y'know, the circle in the middle and the rounded petals?) but I couldn't figure out how to neatly make it look like a square. Well, I was doing a new washcloth that has a different flower in the center (same number of petals, though) and it turns it into a hex (which I could do) and THEN it turned the hex into a square!!!! OMG! That's exactly what I needed! So, after this MAM is done, I'm going to be tweaking that pattern to make the squares for my 2nd daughter's afghan. They will both be flowers and the same colors, but different designs.
I am so excited about that! (I think I would have gone bonkers doing 80 gerber daisy squares anyway!)
What's the status on the rest of you?

Homebody, how is your Gerbera Daisy Afghan coming along?
Yelutci, is your Flower Scarf getting longer and longer?
Leslie, is your Gerbera Daisy Granny Purse ready for gift-giving?
scc51055, is your Gerbera Daisy Afghan progressing?
LadyCrochat, how is this last right on your Les Fleurs Doily doing? Is it taking FOREVER? Keep at it, you'll get there!
CrochetPrincess66, did you ever tell me what you were making? Oh jeez, I don't remember! I'll have to go looking....

Leisure Arts makes a booklet called "99 Floral Motifs to Crochet." For folks who are good at picking up motifs and thinking up their own backgrounds, borders, connections between pieces, etc.. it's money well spent IMO. :) I bought it, but I fear that I need more crochet experience before I can get creative enough to make proper use of it. Anyhow, lots of pretty flowers inside. Daisies, sunflowers, violets, roses, etc. :flower

Well I've got the flowers done-finished off all the purple velvet yarn. Now I have to decide what to use for the leaves. I'm having a hard time picking a green that I like with the dark purple. I may have to break out the color wheel that I bought at the Homeschool convention "for the kids science and art".
Krystal16
August 4th, 2006, 03:31 PM
Have you seen the RHSS light sage? It's a nice muted green - in my mind it would look good with a dark purple. They also have a dark sage that goes well in the Sage Mary with the dark purple there, too.
Can we see pictures??????? Oh, we're so desperate to see pictures!
Anyone else out there, you're still welcome to join us!

Krystal, Sorry, I've decided not to make it at this time. I hate the RH yarn I bought for it (hard & itchy!) and I'm not real crazy about all the holes. I've got a few other afghans going right now and I am contemplating what other yarn to use and how to change the pattern so I have less holes.

Krystal that sounds like a great idea you have -changing the shapes of the motifs for the other afghan....I was wondering How you were going to tell them apart, I know how possesive kids can be about stuff like that...I thought maybe you would have to do a different color sequence or something...anyway awesome idea!

Still sewing together that MAM....what was I thinking with BLACK? Oh, yeah - it's the color the BRIDE TO BE chose....I hate whipstitching, but doing it on black is even worse.

Hi, If it is not too late, I would love to join this CAL. I just love flowers and anything that has to do with them. I started on an afghan that was different hexagons put together to look like flowers but that seems like it may take awhile to do....and....I fell in love with the first flower scarf pattern posted and definitely want to make that for my daughter. She is hopelessly addicted to scarves (and purses). I just bought a purse pattern book on Ebay and maybe I can adapt one of the patterns with flowers to make her a matching purse too...just have to wait for it to come in the mail.
Krystal....your gerber afghan is just beautiful! I love the colors you chose.
Debbie...your doily is just stunning. I really wish I could work with the thread but my fingers will not cooperate.
Barbara Jean....your afghan is too cute...I love the daisies and the colors.

August 7th, 2006, 04:22 PM
Alright everyone!! I have an announcement to make.....I designed my FIRST pattern! In desperation, I couldn't find what I wanted for my 2nd daughter's afghan. I was going to have them the same (gerber daisy) but the 2nd afghan is a FULL (not a twin) and it would have been SOOO heavy. So, I designed this square...
It's still a bit rough around the edges, so now I'm going to make a chart (not instructions - I can't make sure my design has the same number on each side that way) and work the kinks out of it. What do you think?
It will be in the same colors as my Gerber Daisy afghan (first post) but this design. Criticism is welcome as well.

Oh, Krystal, I love it! :manyheart What size is the finished square? I'd love to make that.
Krystal16
August 7th, 2006, 05:42 PM
Well, it's just over 9 1/2", so I guess it could be considered a 10" square?
I have to get it to the point that I can have someone else understand my directions! I've got a FEW (like 30) more squares to do, so it's not like I won't have the opportunity!
When I get it that far, maybe I'll have you guys test it. I'm thinking I might either submit it or sell it. Never done that before, but I figure if *I* couldn't find something like it, maybe someone else wants one, too?

August 7th, 2006, 06:15 PM
Oh Wow Krystal! I LOVE that....I bet you could certainly sell that pattern! You can use your daughter's afghan as the example of your design....was it very hard changing colors in the same round? Did you "carry" the white under the pink stitches and the pink under the white stitches?....if you could explain how to do that sufficiently I would love to test it for you! We are talking about making the square right? I don't think I am up for a whole afghan right now!

Krystal, Your pattern is very nice! I'm sure your daughter will love it. I have decided on a different flower pattern I found in a book using scraps of colors. When I get a few done I will post a picture. This pattern has NO HOLES! It will be for one of my granddaughters. The pattern has black as a background which makes the flowers stand out, but I'm not sure black would work for a 6 yr old. I'm still thinking on that one. Anyway, I'm back in the groove!

Oh thank you for all of your kind words....I must be in a real daring mood today, because I'm just starting my sons' afghans, and the first thing I made for it was a ship's wheel. I think I'm getting the hang of turning these circles into squares....
Now, to write it all down neatly.....boy, doesn't THAT take all the fun out of it!
I'm anxiously awaiting your pics, Kathryn - what's the name of the pattern called? I have a hex motif that sounds similar. I've got 3 hexes done, but since it IS a scrap for me, it's taking the back burner!

lol Debbie....thanks for the welcome and you are right, I could not pass up this CAL. Your doily is coming along just beautiful!! I have a pattern for an afghan I am trying to talk myself into that has flowers real similar to yours and it is a connect as you go pattern. I thought it might be too flimsy though because they are only connected at the flower points. I may have to try a small section just to see.
Krystal...your pattern is so adorable and I bet your daughter will just love it...and it will be a one-of-a-kind. The colors you chose are just beautiful too.
Just an update....I have not started the scarf yet. I was going to surprise my daughter....but...remembered how picky she can be sometimes so I decided to tell her I was making her a flower scarf and asked what colors she might like. She hasn't seen the pattern so it will still be a little bit of a surprise. We went to Michael's last night and she picked out Caron SS Quick in the hot pink, neon green, grape and blue colors with yellow centers. Hopefully I will get to start it tonight. If I get any progress made, I will post some pics.

So, as far as that DREADED MAM....it did NOT get done in time for teh bridal shower! Saturday (my "do or die" day) I wound up with a whopper of a sinus headache - thought it was allergies, turned out it was a cold that's now passing through my children. So, I went early to the shower, bought a giftcard where she was registered. Felt like a heel, but OH WELL. So now I'm making the MAM BIGGER and giving it as a wedding present. It was suppsoed to be about 48" wide, I'll now make it big enough to cover the queen sized bed.
I started writing down my sons' ships' wheel pattern last night, was doing well, but ran out of time. I have YET to straighten out teh flower pattern...maybe today. Got lots of real-life stuff to do, though - so I'm not sure.
Started another afghan yesterday called "Snow Crystals" - this is another Xmas present. It's 6" squares, and they work up quickly (J hook) and I'm even being a good girl and stitching them together/sewing in ends as I go.
I think I'll frog that butterfly patchwork one. Too many ends. Have to keep looking for something else. Anyone have a nice pattern that uses a nice simple ecru with a jewel-tone variegated? (NOT a RIPPLE!)

OK, I diagrammed my pattern. Took me forever because I'm a neurotic nut and had to use circles and hexes on my graph paper, PLUS a ruler to make sure the stitches all fanned out and were even. Even though my square looked great, I sort of fudged it in places and the stitches weren't even. The diagram helped a lot of that.
So, now that I have it "fixed" on the diagram, I have to actually crochet it and make out instructions (my diagram is too messy to actually scan and read). BUT I can't find my H hook. It's the size I like for this yarn, and it DISAPPEARED! Ugh.
Maybe I'll try the I on it. Really wish I could find that H.

I haven't done much more because we got cable internet yesterday so I just can't seem to stay off the computer.
We are leaving Tuesday for 5 days of camping so my plan is to crochet as many squares as possible by Tuesday. That means I won't have to carry all 3 colors of yarn with me. I'll just take white and working on joining the squares to the 24 I already have completed.

Jeez, that doily looks like A LOT of work! I can only get into really small thread projects - like bookmarks. I don't think I could do a doily!
I got my 2nd square of the regular (not Gerber) daisy afghan done and joined last night. Since I have about 8 afghans started, all for Xmas, I became OCD and charted out how many of each square needs to be done and put them in my day planner. The rule is that I have to sew in ends and join as I go. So now I am revolving by day with projects and they will all be done well before Xmas if I follow my plan.....
My self-designed square is still in the adjustment phase. Had to rip out the edge of my first square as I didn't have an even number of stitches on each side :eek !

Ladies,
may I also join you here?
I'm making a summer top where the top part is like a bra and the bottom - square flower elements (granny squares?) I'm connecting the squares together as I go. I'm at work now, but will post my progress pictures tonight. I ran out of yarn, so the whole thing is on hold now.

Absolutely, welcome and join in!
Svetlana
August 15th, 2006, 03:05 PM
Thank you Krystal!
When you make an afghan out of squares, do you connect the squares as you go or sew them together later? This is all new to me, and I don't really like the way I connected mines.
Krystal16
August 15th, 2006, 03:30 PM
You can do it either way, Svetlana. I usually connect mine into columns as I go, then connect those columns together as I have a new column to add. This helps me to not have JUST joining to do at the end. I dread joining. There are many different ways to join, what method are you using?
Svetlana
August 15th, 2006, 04:25 PM
O, boy, Krystal, you make me feel dumm :lol, I don't know what method I'm using!:think I just connect them in the corners and two time in between when I make the last row of the square. What are other methods? Also, what if the elements are round? How do you connect those?

Thanks for the compliments ladies, you're all so kind & encouraging (or is it enabling?). I haven't decided if I'll gift or keep it-I really like how it turned out, it's very soft.

Svetlana - sorry, I didn't see where you said "join as you go". Most afghan squares you crochet, then you use a tapestry needle and whipstitch them together. I never used to like how whipstitch looked, but for some reason I must have been doing it wrong - lately it's looking a lot better than it used to. You CAN join as you go with grannies or some afghans that are designed that way, but it often creates a raised ridge where the two squares meet. Usually the pattern will tell you what to do.

Hello Svetlana, welcome to this CAL......I am looking forward to seeing your work. Svetlana....I think I am in the minority because I make all of my little squares and then I start sewing them together....there are many ways to do that, you can sew them together with yarn and a large eye needle or you can crochet them together(again.....lots of different ways to do that too)....But the join as you go method is when you crochet (using single crochets or slip stitches) into the side of another square on the last row of the square you are working on...does that make sense to you?
Here is a link that can help you out.....
http://www.crochetcabana.com/tutorials/ltc-joining_squares.htm
Here is another link that may explain it better...you have to scroll down a bit to find the joining techniques

Hope these are helpful to you!

Krystal, Debbie,
thank you for your help. Debbie, I looked at the links, they opened my eyes to joining motivs. Thank you for that!:hug
I connect my squares in the last row as I go. I had to re-do a few of them, because I didn't like how I connected them. It looks better now. Didn't take a picture again last night. And tonight I'm going to my knitting group meeting, so I have to work on my knitting project today.
I'm not a multiple project person, but it's just happened that I have 2 projects going now. Unusual for me, but I guess I'll have two finished objects at once. :hook

Well, I finally got that pattern written down, but it wasn't really MY idea! I went to do my daisy square last night, and my graph was GONE!!! AAARGH! One of my kids must have taken it to draw on the back or something, and it is nowhere to be found! Fortunately this is my fourth one, so I pretty much remembered what I had, plus I looked at one that was already done. So as I went along last night, I wrote down the pattern. It's all messy and sloppy, but it's at least in print in a notebook!
Svetlana - great job! I could probably make that, but then I'd have to find someone who would look good in it - NOT ME!!! :rofl
So, where are pictures of everyone else's???

That is a great job Svetlana:applause.......I hope you are writing :pencilthat down because everyone who sees it later when you post it at Show and Tell will be begging you for that pattern! As for my doily it has been going slowly because I have been working on a few UFOs.....working with that tiny hook nd the crochet thread is tedious:irk..... so I can only do it in short bursts! I am defiantly developing a deep respect for the woman who do mostly doilies......the level of concentration needed is unbelievable!:eek

Yay :)
I will take some pictures and post them when I get home today.
I'm making a baby blanket or pram cover (whatever it wants to be, really) for a friend, she's due in about six weeks. I'm using square 2 from "99 Floral Motifs to Crochet" and I'm using light pink, yellow, blue, purple and dark pink for the flowers, light green for the leaves and white for the border of each square. I think I will make it five by seven squares, but I won't be sure until I've got all the squares done, I think it will be on the small side.
I love that Gerbera Daisy pattern (I'll try it one of these days) it's so lovely. What you've done so far is looking great, Krystal16 - your own pattern is exceptional, too. I can't wait to see those two finished :)

Sounds pretty, Michelle! (And you can just call me Krystal ;) :lol )
I'm not sure what to do regarding my pattern and possibly selling it. I've never done it before, but I figure since I like this "hobby" so much, it might be better if I get paid for it, right? Not that I imagine it would be a lot of money, but why not? It *would* be sorta cool to say I got published! I guess I should read up on it, though first.... I asked for pointers in the forum, but only one peppy reply. I want someone to steer me with their mistakes! :lol
Well, onward and upward, right? Have to get crocheting now, can't be sitting her online all night! See you!

Wildflwr, the book is lovely isn't it? This is square 2, I like a lot of them but I think this one is my favourite.
All my centers are done :)
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m44/michellekk_craft/flowerrugcentersdone.jpg
It looks a bit untidy with all those ends hanging out...I'm not sure how I feel about the colours now they're all together but I think it will look better when the leaves and borders are added.
I noticed the dark flowers (dk. pink, blue and purple) are bigger and the yarn felt a bit thicker than the light colours (lt. pink and yellow) - the yarn is the same brand and ply, has anyone else noticed their darker coloured yarns feeling a bit thicker? Not by much, they look the same but the centers are bigger for the darker colours...it's a mystery to me!
Anyway, today I'll have to try and get all the leaves done and then see how I go.

Those look so neat, Michelle! Yes, I've noticed different colors of the same yarn working up differently...funny, isn't it?
Well, I went and started ANOTHER afghan! OMG! IS it possible? I am a freak - an addict! I started Lawless' tartan plaid afghan, but mine is in fall colors. I think this makes about 10 afghans in progress. Boy, I hope I don't have ANY MORE yarn to make ANY MORE afghans I like!!!
I am packing for vacation, have a tote just for my yarn projects. I'm ONLY bringing 4!!! LOL! DH won't say a thing, though - he's an understanding kinda guy. Hope to get a lot done. I'll be making squares, though - not really joining. I don't feel like lugging the Gerber and Daisy portions that are already done. Hopefully I'll get ahead and then just have a day or so of joining to get caught up.
Keep up the good work! See you guys after the holiday (Labor Day) if I don't get on here later.

Thank you, BarbaraJean! It's a good incentive to keep going when I can post my little updates here and get some kind words of encouragement :) This is my biggest and most complicated project so far and it is getting to the 'tedious' stage. I love crocheting but I am definitely an end-product type of girl.
You're doing the "Fresh as a Daisy" afghan, right? I have the same book (a future project, maybe?) - it is hard to find the time, I am putting lots of things off in order to spend so much time crocheting this week.
I look forward to seeing everyone elses' progress!
Penny, it seems this is a jump in when you want project, I only joined a few days ago myself.
I managed to finish another square on the way to work this morning, there's not too many left to do now.

Which flower pattern are you using? I like these, and don't recall seeing them in all my perusing . . .
I didn't know about the Flower CAL when after a year of not being able to decide on colors, I finally began the blooms for my version of that veritable flower scarf. BarbaraJean - it sure does. I really like the "Old Fashioned Favourite" pattern (pictured on the cover), I'd love to make that one day :)
I had a busy day yesterday, not much time for crocheting. I did manage to finish off the last three squares, so all the squares are done now. I wove in the ends on two squares (two down, 33 to go!). I tried to join them, just to see how I would do but I didn't have much luck with crocheting them together, I'm not sure why. I think I'm going to have to wash and pin each square to shape before I try again, they are a little bit wonky.
I'm still plodding along...

It would seem I do not do well with X-ALs as I have the world's shortest attention span. I seem to have fallen off the ripple-along because I didn't like how the baby-ghan was going. But I'm going to get right up since I managed to actually finish my first non-scarf piece. See my post at the show and tell (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=32927).
So I'm going to make KLouise's Hidden Vines Scarf (http://kristinaskrochet.50webs.com/scarfversion1.htm) in keeping with the floral motif. I've started the chain but mine doesn't seem to want to "wind" was much as hers does. Wish me luck!

Boy, am I glad Crochetville is back! :) I sure could've used some advice over the last few days!
I've got all the squares joined now and all the strips joined, except the last one (I'm half way through joining that). When I joined the first two strips together, I was horrified - it looked so awful! I was very tempted to just throw the whole thing away (or at least, throw it in a cupboard and forget about it) but I didn't and I'm glad now because I'm really very proud of it and I think it looks quite nice. None of the squares wanted to line up but they're mostly behaving themselves and if I need to, I just tweak the join a bit until it works.
I did the "weaving in the ends" business for the first ten squares before I joined them and then I thought I'd just go ahead and join the rest anyway, because I was making more ends doing the joining (and then there's the border). A friend of mine has offered moral support on Monday, I'll go to her place and have some company while I do the rest (it actually didn't take too long).
It's a bit smaller than I wanted but there's not much I can do about it now - I am certainly not making any more of those squares for a while!
I will take some photos this afternoon...

Finally finished! :) I still have most of the ends to do, but I am waiting until Monday for those (have done a few more and I will probably do some later on tonight but I will leave the bulk to do on Monday).
It's taken me two weeks - my first actual project and I am very happy with how it turned out.
I decided to go with a very simple border, just double crochet and then a treble 'shell'. I was going to do something a bit more complicated and a lot more colourful...but I got sick of the endless double crochets and I thought that it was only fair to use the green, since it was in every square. I like being fair to my colours :)

(close-up of pink flower - the photo isn't really true to the actual colour)
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m44/michellekk_craft/flowerrugfin4.jpg
(close-up of the border).
It measures about 62cm (~25inches) x 84cm (~34inches). It hasn't been washed or blocked yet. It's a bit ruffled around the edges and a little skewiff but I quite like it, I'll leave the border as it is and just try and pin the squares out.
Thanks for the encouragement! I might do another one...

WOW...looks like a lot has been going on. I was gone off and on over the weekend....unfortunately the last one of the summer.
useratl .... sorry I didn't get back to you sooner but the pattern was the first link that Krystal posted in this thread, post #3. I tried the link and I am not sure it is working now though.
Michelle ....your afghan turned out just adorable!!!!:cheer I love the colors you chose and the border is just perfect.
I have some bad news and some good news with my scarf. After trying to put the flowers together, I thought they were too bulky and didn't hang nice (I was using the SS quick)....so....I took the rest of the yarn my daughter had picked out and made her a scarf with it, crocheted on the long side with stripes of her bright colors. She came over the night I got it done and just LOVED it...and of course took it with her. So the bad news it that I have to find a new flower project (which shouldn't be too hard ;) )...but the good news is she loved the scarf I made with the colors she picked. I figure I will keep the flowers I did and maybe add them to a hat ??
I'm definitely going to find a new flower project to work on and will keep you posted very soon. :hook

I am making the squares for my new blanket now, I will add crocheted flowers either to the edging or randomly on the squares, I think to the edging will look nicer but I may still put a few on the outer squares...I'll see how I go.
I want it to look flowery but not be so fiddly - and this way, there are less ends to weave in (yay!).
I will try and get some pictures up this afternoon.

Hello all! Great to have you back Krystal! I see that everyone's projects are going so well! I have finally finished with my doily! Right now it is blocking and it is still wet....I think I may have to iron parts of it here and there, but when it is all dry and ready I will post a photo!

I finally got took some pictures to show my progress on my scarf. I had to sub a lot of the yarn colors as I couldn't find the originals. I absolutely love the Bernat Satins. So soft! I hope they wash up nicely. Anyway, I've got almost all the centers done, except that I ran out of DMC floss and needed to get more and of course Joann's is still out of the light pink. I need to do the outers of the flowers with the Bernat and some rosettes and leaves and attach and it'll all be ready just in time for fall. Course, I don't really have any clothing in these colors so I just may need to go shopping or join that Victoria's Secret skirt CAL so I have something to coordinate. ha ha ha!

Here is my flower WIP. :think I'm imagining weaving the green leaves & vines the length of the flowers plus some.:think I've decided to use a couple of different greens together to get the thickness & look I'm trying for.
OK- I showed mine-now let's see yours!
I just love your purple flower scarf Kimberly. Did you have a chance to add the leaves you were talking about?
Care to share the pattern?

Alright, so LadyCrochat is done....who will be here to keep bumping up this post before it hits page 2? I keep seeming to neglect it! :(
So...I have a whole vertical strip of the daisy afghan I made finished. I originally was going to have it 8x6, but it's going to be too big, so now it's only 7x5. I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE working on this square. Should I say that, since I'm the one that designed it? I think it's because I STILL can't memorize the stitches on the one round and I keep having to look in my pattern book.
My gerber daisy one has three rows (of 6) joined together, and a fourth row joined to itself. I messed up though and made the fifth row's squares before the fourth row, so I have only two squares of the fourth row done but the entire fifth row finished. It would have been so nice to have that fourth row sewn on! But I'm getting SOOOOO close!
I have a MAM to finish by Saturday, plus a little catching up on joining from vacation, so I'll post a pic of the Gerber once I get that fourth row stuffed in there.
:D :D

Krystal, I'm looking forward to seeing pictures :) I really like both of the patterns you're working on (and really, you can't hate the square you designed).
I haven't made any progress on my second blanket, I've been busy with a few other projects...

Sorry the pics are so poor-(It's one of those days when nothing works out) I wound up using TLC Amore Celery Green for the leaves & vines.
Here's a pic w/the finished leaves-sorry but I didn't use a pattern-just went where the yarn took me;) .

Hello! I'M BACK! I guess I am a sucker for flowers! Anyway I started another project....It is a picture of a crocheted basket and several crocheted flowers...I am forcing myself to work in thread until I get the hang of it! Anyway do not worry as I will still be here to bump us up if we look like we are slipping onto page 2!

A CAL like this could go on for years :) So many floral projects to do! Glad you've got a new project to work on, Debbie - looking forward to seeing how it turns out (it sounds pretty).
My 2nd blanket is still on hold while I work on a few other things. I'm a bit worried it will end up as a Christmas present and not as a "new baby" gift - just as long as it doesn't end up as a 1st birthday present!

lulubird6 .... Your scarf is looking soooo pretty. I love the colors you chose.
Debbie .... Your finished doily is just stunning!!! It almost makes me wish I could use thread. It is WAY to thin and the hooks are WAY too small for me. :eek Glad to hear to found something else to work on.
I finally found my new flower project. :cheer It is kind of a scrap afghan from the Scrap Yarn Afghan Book by House of White Birches. It is called Moonflowers. I am using up some scraps to make it now but if I like it, I want to make one without scraps for a Christmas gift. I will hopefully be able to get some pics posted tonight.

Thanks wildflower!
Yelutci, I love your scarf! It looks so cosy, where did you get the pattern if I might inquire? I also want to make the Sweet Magnolia Scarflette (http://www.fablehandmadegoods.com/customergallery.html) that I luckily downloaded while it was still a free pattern.
I'm currently on hiatus from my current scarflette until Thursday when I finish my finals. I'm adjusting the pattern so it should be quicker going once I get going on it.

:hug Thank's for your kind words. I wanted to make the magnolia scarflette, too, but never downloaded it when it was free:( . I just did basic flowers with chains to link them and then a series of leaves(-I think the tutorial is on the same site as the scarf). Then I wound the 2 scarfs together and added a few leaves & curly bits to "tie" them.

So, haven't made any MAJOR progress, just slow and steady. Have a headcold now - ugh! I hate the first week of school. One of my kids ALWAYS brings home something fun like this.
My MAM has to be finished by tomorrow - I didn't weave the ends as I went, so guess what I get to do today? With a headcold!
Boo-hoo. :(

Hey Krystal....hate to hear that you aren't feeling well:sick! Hope you are doing better real soon:dance! You keep using the expression MAM....and I am TOTALLY clueless as to what it means:shrug! Maybe I have a MAM too and I just don't know it! LOL! :rofl
Ok...Here I am again...editing my Post! I just went over to seeking patterns and I saw someone seeking a pattern For a Mile a Minute afghan....so NOW I know what a MAM is! Oh....I am SOOOOOO proud of myself!

Sorry to hear you have to weave in ends when you're unwell, Krystal - a nasty enough task even without the headcold!
Well done, Debbie - you have excellent investigative skills :)
No progress here, either...focusing on my swap items (have a deadline for those) - I will start back on my squares as soon as I can.

OK, so I got to crochet all day thanks to this darned cold. I wove in all the ends on tha MaM (I posted a pic under Home Decor, if you're interested) and went to the wedding - felt like garbage. Slept poorly, woke up with laryngitis and that nasty dry cough. Only thing to do at that point it to lay low (with the two kids who also have a cough) while the rest of the family went on with daily plans to visit inlaws.
Only problem is that I didn't work on my flower stuff AT ALL!!!!
On my day-to-day "task list", I had fallen behind the last two days and was trying to catch up, when I got distracted by ANOTHER afghan that I am SOOOOOO close to finishing. I really thought I could finish it tonight, but I don't think so now. :(
Now off to reality - make dinner for me & the younguns, then pick up all my yarn projects before DH comes home and sees them ALL OVER the house!!! He's very tolerant, but that would just be taking advantage of his patience, you know?
Well, at least I'm caught up with everything (almost)...

I have worked on my scarflette a bit. Make the leaves and will be ready to attach everything once I work in the 5 MILLION(!) ends in all the flowers and leaves and rosettes. Duh! Why didn't I do each one as I finished it and why did I crochet everything so tight cuz those round little flowers are a byotch when you have four ends for each flower! :(
