View Full Version : Is this wrong to ask for?

I really wanted to make this blanket from Interweave Crochet, but the cost of the magazine is nuts considering that I only want to make that and then on top of that the shipping is almost $5.
Here a link to the picture on the Interweave website (just scroll down page to see Babette Blanket):

I'm not sure if this is wrong to ask for, but if it is let me know. I would really love to make this one! Its from the current issue. Maybe I should just buy the magazine...

You can ask to trade for the magazine and maybe some one will have a copy to trade.
Or maybe someone will have an extra copy and just RAK you with it.
Either way good luck. :)

You might be able to find it cheaper on eBay and with a lower shipping... Interweave Crochet is an awesome and amazing magazine and you might find more things in there that you want to make therefore making it worth buying the mag...
or, like was suggested, put a not up in the 'for trade, sale, or free' section and see what happens!
It is a pretty pattern!

:cheer You dont need a pattern at all for this type of Afghan.
Just find a Granny Square you like and work out a similar colour scheme.
Vary the size of the squares by doing more or less rows, then lay them out to fit together nicely.
It should be a lot of fun to make your own design.
Have fun.

Thanks everyone!
I may definitely try to make it by myself, but I'm scared it may be lopsided haha.

:cheer It wont come out lopsided if you work out a formula for your squares such as 2 rounds, 4 rounds, 8 rounds etc.
If you are using all one weight of yarn, it should work out better this way rather than measuring, because it is easier when you are matching together because you should end up with the same number of stitches on each square.
It looks like the same square is used throughout, just different colours and number of rows.
I will have a go tomorrow, on a small scale and see if it will work.
It is almost 11pm here so I really need to go to bed now.
Have fun.

I agree with Aggie May. This pattern is so simple you really don't need a pattern. It's simple grannies which are changed up every row with some squares being made larger than others.
Funny thing is that when I got this magazine I thought "UGH! What an ugly afghan!" It's amazing how each of us sees items differently.
If you really want the pattern I would put it under your RAOK Wish List and maybe a super nice fairy will send it to you! (By the way, there are TONS of awesome patterns in that mag. Totally worth the price!) Good luck!

I have that magazine. Do you want to trade something for it? PM me and we can work out a deal.

Jillie, you could ask somebody to rip the original pattern out of their magazine and send that to you, but I doubt anybody would be willing to deface their magazine like that!
You can't ask somebody to make a copy of the pattern and send it to you, as that is a violation of copyright law. I know you *didn't* ask anybody to do that, I'm just offering this is clarification. :)
I also need to clarify something else for everyone regarding "stealing bandwidth." Whenever someone provides a link to a graphic that is hosted on another site (like the Interweave Crochet site) so that the graphic loads here in the forum post, that is considered bandwidth theft (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=3306), which is a violation of our forum guidelines (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?p=376390#post376390).
The picture of the blanket that was posted was actually hosted on the Interweave Crochet site, so I had to edit it so the picture no longer loads here in our forum. I've replaced it with the link to the actual page with project descriptions/photos/supply lists.

I agree. My mom and I worked up a suitable alternative pattern this weekend in just a few hours.

I looked at the website and I want this magazine too! I found one on ebay but altogether it would cost me about $30 including postage lol. Ive asked a friend at the 'ville to see if she can get it and post it cheaper than that because most US websites presume we dont like waiting and post airmail when land and sea mail is loads cheaper but it takes about 10 weeks on average

OH MY! Mia culpa. :eek I feel so guilty because I've done this exact thing in other posts... I thought I was doing a good thing:no by not taking up space with a picture... Guess I'd better go check those forum guidelines:yes
Thank you for being such a nice administrator and taking care of the 'technical aspect' of things while we're chatting along:hug

Believe me, posting a pic from somewhere else uses a LOT of bandwidth! I posted one from my site a while ago and used all my bandwidth in about an hour lol. Photobucket has saved me a lot of money :)
Its because this forum is SO fantastic and has LOADS of members :)

No problem, everyone. We just need to be aware that most sites don't want their images being displayed in someone else's forum or site: they want to get the site hits/traffic directly on their own site. So it's always best that if you don't own the picture yourself, just provide a clickable link to it on the site where it resides.
Some sites get very angry about their bandwidth being stolen. They have site tools in place that let them know just where a picture is being posted without their permission. Then they go in and change the picture that displays at that particular link, oftentimes changing it to a really horrible, nasty, vile picture of some sort. We definitely don't want anything like that loading up here in the forum!
So, if in the past you didn't realize what bandwidth theft is, and you've posted some links to pics that load here in the forum when they shouldn't, please search back through your posts and edit them so they're clickable links that take people back to the site where the pics live. That will potentially save me a lot of work! :yes

If it is, it'll add to the charm. I personally think the afghan is a bit lopsided anyway. ;)

I found 1 on eBay, but this seller is charging $5.05 to ship to my zip. I don't understand why they are charging so much, as this can be shipped with the media mail rate, which is super cheap. Perhaps you can ask if they would be willing to lower the shipping or ask why so high. Here's the link:

Okay, I asked the above seller why his shipping was so high. Here is his response:
Thank you for asking ~ the shipping cost is for Priority Shipping + $1 handling fee = $5.05. eBay does not let me calculate for media meail so I have to go to the post office to do this. I prefer to ship everything directly from my home and have the postman pick it up. If I ship it first class it is $3.50 = handling.
Not very honest. He can ship through eBay/Paypal and send it media mail. I've done so myself, so I know it's possible.
I'll keep my eye out, because there are a couple of patterns in there I wouldn't mind having too. It I get the mag, I'll send you the original blanket pattern.

Actually, this seller is only charging $1 for shipping/handling. That's very, very cheap. I think what they were trying to tell you is that they'd rather not ship media mail because it often means a trip to the post office to weigh the item on the postal scale. Priority mail is soooooo much easier than figuring out the weight of each and every item you're trying to sell.
I sell a lot of things on ebay, and I try to only use Priority Mail too. What most buyers dont realize is that sellers have to figure in the cost of supplies (boxes/envelopes, tape, gas, postage) and try to figure out a fair way to be compensated for those items. Some sellers tack on HUGE shipping/handling prices.
I figured out once that if I listed and sold something on ebay for $.99, after the ebay fees and paypall fees, I'd only be making about $.41. So almost half of the sale price goes to various fees. Adding on a $1 "service" charge really isn't that outrageous when you look at it that way.

This pattern just looks like a bunch of different sized striped squares sewed together.
I found someone's blog and she said she has finished half of the pattern. Here's her picture.

How ironic - I just visited the page out of curiosity and decided to check the links for the pictures he (she?) has displayed in the listing, and whadya know? They are coming directly from the Interweave website! :eek
I have a sneaky suspicion alot of that goes on with ebay...
(Okay, my computer continues to misbehave, had to embed the link so it wouldn't mess up the width format of this message thread. I don't know why it sometimes does that!)

You may want to try the library. I went yesterday to return some things and went to the magazine section to see if they had it. They had the Interweave Knitting magazine and a few other knitting magazines, but not the Interweave Crochet. I asked the lady if they would be getting it, and she said that they may be able to get it, but not this year because they have already put in their order for the year. She suggested that I try the other library branches.
