View Full Version : Desperate need for cat toys & blankies

My friend and I rescued a stray cat the other day and we brought him to the local humane society for a safe place and she ended up taking him back home with her due to the deplorable situation.
The cat shelter was overun with cats and the shelter is struggling as best they can. I am now volunteering and helping with litter changes, food and general needs. But what the cats really need are blankies to love on and toys. There is not a single toy in that place. All the donations go straight to their basic needs, and toys and loveys are not considered a basic need :(
So if anyone can help me with small blankets and toys I would appreciate it.
The toys can be any crocheted item, like a curly string, a stuffed mouse, a ball, anything. THe blankets don't have to big, just large enough for a cat to lay on. Catnip would be appreciated as well. Here in Alaska we only have one decent kind and its $4.99 for a small bag, and with the rise in gas prices all the store items like toys are ridiculously overpriced (because everything has to be shipped up here). I am doing what I can, but I can only do so much by myself.
Please if anyone can help, please please do.
PM me for any other information.
Thank you for reading this.

Added:
Here is a pic of the kitty I am trying to talk the hubby into fostering. But if you look behind him you can see how awful and sad the place is. And not a comfy soft spot to lay down anywhere.

I have spiders on long strings, long curly chase things, mice, balls, cat beds, balls, and curly cat collars, several dozen of each. They're all good things to use up yarn, and easy to do when you're watching TV. I promised them for the bazaar for my girlfriend's church, though, but she tells me it's getting smaller every year, and I can make more and send you what's not sold. If you don't want the collars I can sell them at the Christmas bazaar near me for pets of homeless people. Thank you for doing this!

I got the patterns for everything at

http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/index.php

PM me your address or where I can send this.

P. S. You could have a sale using the collars; people will buy ANYTHING for pets. Tell me if there's something else you need. I make no promises, but you never know!

I have some polar fleece I can cut up for blankets, and some fluffy yarn I can make into spirals--my cats like them. I'll see if I can rustle up some catnip, too. Just give me a pm!

(And tell your husband that being kind to strays will help him avoid the curse of the Crazy Cat Lady. It's a really bad curse. :yes Besides, sucking up to the cats now will help you when they take over in the future. :devil )

Husband will probably let me have him enventually :) He has a super soft spot for wounded/injured/neglected things, and they all have a unique bond with him. For all his abrasive exterior he is a gentle man.

Hubby likes him, but we are worried about his runny nose.

Thank you so much ladies. I cannot express how much this means to me. I have been on this site for a year now and I am always amazed by how quickly everyone jumps in to help. You are an amazing group of people with unbelievable generousity. I can't wait to give the cats all their new toys and lovies!

Here is another site with 2 toys. They are knit patterns, but the super simple concept will work for crochet as well. I am going to make some of these tonight.

Well I wasn't able to get to the shelter this weekend. My little one was feeling bad. We are going tomorrow night though.
Here are the 3 toys I have completed so far. Uggghhh I am such a slow crocheter, especially with small stitches!
The mouse is from KristieMN and the octopus I just sort of freehanded. The triangle was supposed to be a won-ton, but instead its just a triangle. All are stuffed with batting and catnip. I have another 2 toys in the works at the moment.
The lighter is just for a size reference.

I may have a couple of squares here that could be used for 'blankies' for them and I can make a couple of 'rings' (my cats love them) to send along too. Please PM me your address.

I hope you get to keep the kitty. I just lost one of mine on the weekend and I'm broken hearted about about it. She was so pretty, steel gray and white. I will miss her. We think a snake 'got' her. She crawled up to the house but we didn't get to her in time..... SO, get that kitty and cuddle it, it's so pretty.

so you still need blankies right? How about some of my daughter's old receiving blankets? I think some of them are thicker, not the thin kind, that can be cut smaller. I don't have the patience to crochet toys (sorry) would buying some be out of the question?

Recieving blankets would be perfect! Just having a small space of their own means so much. I noticed they tend to sleep/lay in the same places. And any toy would be appreciated! I took in the 3 small ones I had and as soon as I walked in it was like getting mugged. All I saw was fur and tails and !poof! my hands were empty!
I am going to post some pictures in a minute of some of the kitties.

EDIT:
Here are some pictures of the downstairs and upstairs. You can see how sad and dirty it is. There must be almost 100+ cats in the shelter.

I am going to tie the spiders and squiggly twist things to the raw wood "shelves" they all sleep on. And the little beds! YAY!! I can't wait to go to the shelter this saturday and bring these goodies! Thank you so very much!!

I didn't see this post until now! Oh my! All those adorable babies!!! Please PM me the address. I have a gazillion things that I must finish for my niece's shower, but I'll find time for some cat toys. Even if I can't crochet something quickly, I've made toys for my "kids" from scrap fabric and catnip. I also make GREAT little toys using newborn socks. I can get them at the dollar store and stuff them with cotton and cat nip. Then just sew up the top. Fast and easy, and my kids love the shape and size. :)

I am actually crying! I just received Greylings box, and I am in awe. She sent me 9 pet beds and a scratching post!!!! I don't think any of these kitties has even seen a real scratching post in forever!
Thank you so very very much!
Here is a picture of what I have received so far these are from Greyling and Lefthook.
I am going to the shelter tonight to clean and bring the gifts. I can't wait to see them on their new CLEAN beds, playing with their new toys and tearin up their new scratching post!!

I went to the shelter tonight and spent about 2 hours scrubbing that place. Its a wreck. But I went there with an entire box of goodies. And you should have seen the cats light up. I didn't even know there were that many cats!! They came out of the woodwork! Before my husband even got the box open they were crawling all over it. We kept having to pull them out so we get the goodies.
Here is a picture of my husband Scott and my daughter unpacking the box..
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a302/luvmuffin/Unpackingthebox1.jpg

And then all heck broke loose! We had a full scale festival going on! They were everywhere, tossing, rolling, jumping, even drooling over the toys!!

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a302/luvmuffin/Hegotatoy.jpg
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a302/luvmuffin/Allthetoys3.jpg
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a302/luvmuffin/Allthetoys1.jpg
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a302/luvmuffin/Scratchingheaven.jpg

Then we headed upstairs to the more shy kitties. They weren't shy for long! They were wailing at us as we came up the stairs, I think they knew we had goodies for them.
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a302/luvmuffin/Allthetoy2.jpg
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a302/luvmuffin/Allthetoys4.jpg

And some got beds all their own! I gave the softest ones to oldest and the ones who looked like they really needed one. Like this little girl...
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a302/luvmuffin/Herownbed.jpg
But it was hard to keep them out of the beds! Everyone wanted in!
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a302/luvmuffin/Everyonewantsinthebed.jpg

And before we could empty the box I went back and this is what I found...and I couldn't pry him out of there!
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a302/luvmuffin/Boxbaby.jpg

And most impressive, even the feral cats got into the toys!
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a302/luvmuffin/Eventheferals.jpg

So today I went home feeling like I finally made a difference. I can clean as much as I want, and slap down as much money as I can, but the real difference came today when I got to be the lucky lady who brought some love and joy to their little lives.
The need is still great, and there are so very many kitties. So if you are making some toys, please keep hooking. Not nearly enough of these babies got a toy, blanket or bed.

Thank you all so much! I hope you enjoy seeing the cats enjoy your gifts as much as I enjoyed being able to bring them.
And when I left everyone was still playing and having a grand time. It looked like the place was filled with kittens!:c9

You are absolutely right! Every little bit DOES help. ONE toy/blanket/bed can make a huge difference especially with these guys since they all tend to share.
I am going again tonight to give out some serious love. My goal this evening to brush and clip as many nails as I can. Some of these cats have more mats than fur, and if I can pretty them up a bit maybe someone will look more closely at them when they come to adopt.
And all the toys make happy cats, and again may make them more appealing to a potential adopter.

Thank you all so much for your continued hooking and all the tired fingers!

We are still volunteering and cleaning, and on Saturaday we made it in to just love on everyone. My 2 toddlers, my husband and I spent about 2 hours just walking around loving everyone. It was both heartwrenching and rewarding.

There are a couple that have managed to endear themselves to my hubby. He is allergic to cats, so for him to go and help at the shelter is a huge deal. And he is more a dog person :) We have talked about getting one of the shelter cats, but this weekend he gave the final ok. Now its just a matter of picking on that will fit in with our little family. I am so excited though! To bring one home!! Its so hard to choose though. I feel like taking one is abandoning the rest. *sigh* I wish I had homes for them all....

Just a quick update. Got 2 boxes of goodies!

Jchllm, I got your box! Thank you for all the little blankies! And the twisty toys! I love how thick they are. And the circle toys! I would never have thought of making those, they're awesome! I know the kitties are going to get a kick out them!

Greyling, You minx! You sent me another whole box of goodies! Blankies, treats (I know they never get those!), moving mice, and CATNIP! I am on cloud nine today!

I think when we are done with these babies, they are going to be so spoiled they won't want to leave the shelter!

I can tell you that a few have gained some weight, and the director told me that since there are more blankies, there have been less fights breaking out between the cats, AND less "accidental" marking/peeing. I think it helps to have a small piece of the world that is all your own.

More pics please!!! :) I'm sure they are just filled with joy after hearing about the boxes of goodies you are bringing to them. It makes me so sad to see that ALL these beautiful kitties don't have homes.

Our local shelter doesn't have very many cats and they go home pretty quickly. What is the name of the shelter if I may ask?

You are such an angel to be doing this. I can't imagine how sad it must be. Let's get those kitties adopted! Can you maybe do some advertising for them or highlight specific kitties on a local website or whatever. They just HAVE to get adopted!!!!!

Tapanga
August 8th, 2006, 07:23 PM
Of course I don't mind you asking what the shelter's name is! Its a branch of the Humane Society called Adopt-A-Cat. They actually have some of their kitties featured on a few adoption sites, and I am going to try to get some pics up at the local stores.
I have discovered that alot of these cats have behavioral & health issues. I was hoping to adopt one, but the ones that tolerated my daughters both had issues. Alot of them have been adopted and returned due to peeing around the house. But coming from a place like this its expected. But I can understand not wanting to deal with that. I know I can't.
Another problem is that people just drop the cats off, without asking if they have room. They just leave them.
I will get more pics for you! Last couple of times I left the camera in the car so I didn't have to carry around. But by the time I made it back to the car and remembered the camera I was to tired and depressed to go back in. That place kills me.
Love to all

:clap Yeah! I'm glad the toys arrived. I have blankets coming soon too if you still are needing them. I have a friend who is a cat rescuer here in Ohio and works with Friends of Pets. There was a big ta do story here in our area of trapping and ... don't wish to think about that. People complained that strays dug up gardens. If that's all the cats do they should be thankful. A dog on the loose can bite someone and they get rabies then who's sorry you know ? Anyways, I've been forwarding the pictures onto Donna, my friend, and they really make her heart pick up you see she was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer in April this year and is in stage 4. Unfortnately no surgery options are available for her. So she's doing chemo in hopes of buying more time. Anyways, YES we'd love to see more pictures!! I wish more people would open their hearts to cats.. they get a bad rap but all they want is love like everybody else.... we'll keep doing as long as you need us!! :manyheart :hook

AndiM,
I am so glad they bring joy to Donna! I will make sure I get pictures! In fact I will go tonight. I have the latest boxes to deliver, so it works out well. And I will keep bringing the goodies as long as you wonderful ladies send them. It makes me so sad to think that this place was in such dire straits for so long without me even knowing. Makes my tummy hurt.
I am trying to figure out how to get them a better dryer. They told me last week that the reason they don't wash the blankets is because they don't dry well. I am not sure I totally buy that. They could dry them on a line out back, if they needed to. I think it has do with the not so helpful volunteers. I am discouraged and disgusted by how some of the volunteers just stand around and pat each other on the backs for even bothering to show up.
*sigh* Sorry for the negativity, its just frustrating to see this place. I know we are making a difference, but if everyone who came in actually cleaned, it would be so much nicer. Drives me batty.

Oh man. i wish I could do something to help out AT the shelter. Volunteering is SO free :)

What kind of problems do the kitties have? are you internet savvy at all? You could try signing them up for Petfinder.com I know lots of people look on there and you can talk about the special problems each kitty has, etc. My local shelter uses it and I wouldn't have found my birdie if it weren't for it.
(nevermind, just searched petfinder and they are indeed on there)

Try putting some toys in a plastic bag, adding a bunch of loose catnip, tying the bag, and shaking it up (think chicken). If you leave it and shake it every few days they kind of 'steep.'

Is it my imagination or do the cats look less tense and bored than your first pictures? (being stoned on catnip may have something to do with it) I can see what you mean; even now there aren't many toys.

OMG!! Those beautiful kitties - there are soooo many of them!!!

I crocheted some toys for you, but I also threw in some catnip pouches. Mine aren't "pretty", but they used to sell them at the Humane society near me. Basically its just a square of fabric. put a cotton ball or two and some catnip in them, and then sew or tie them closed. Easy swatting toy. I prefer to use infant socks over fabric. Good shape for kitties to hold, and fast to sew. I'll try to go to the dollar store for some socks - they're really fast to make.

Is it my imagination or do the cats look less tense and bored than your first pictures? (being stoned on catnip may have something to do with it) I can see what you mean; even now there aren't many toys.

I have noticed that to. They are much more relaxed and even more social. I joke that everytime I go I see more cats, but I really do. I think they have figured out that there is someone bringing goodies, so they all come to see if its the goodie bringer. And they are less despairing, like they know we care and we are trying.
Its hard, because the lady who runs it only opens it from 7pm-9pm. It takes that long just to get the litter scooped and the floor swept. It doesn't leave time for socializing or loving. But that is a HUGE part of it. These cats NEED that interaction, they need to be kept socialized to people, otherwise they loose that connection and become more distant and skitish around people. So some days I go in to clean and others I go into to pet and love on them. Those days are my favorite. I think those days are their favorite to.

The pictures are great!!! I wish I could volunteer there. There must be a way to get maybe a church group or individuals. Even if two groups of people would rotate the times being there. I wish I knew more on that.. I will check around.

Tapanga
August 9th, 2006, 09:12 PM
They have a bunch of volunteers. Each day a different group of people come in. We go in on Thrusday because there were only 2 people on that day. The lady is very abrasive, but I like her because she really cleans. Other days, like Tuesday, they have more people but less actually clean. Last night we got in there later than usual because I had to go back to work, and we got there as the volunteers were leaving and there was still cat sick on the floor all over the upstairs, and all the litter boxes up stairs had not been scooped. So I stuck around to do what I could.
Don't misunderstand, there are a lot of nice people who work really hard, but there are a lot who don't. I wish we had more of the good kind :)
Its just the nature of that place that the work is always there. And I think if it was opened in the day we could more volunteers.
I just hesitate to go in there and start trying to tell them how to run it.

Hi Tapanga,

I'm getting another box ready with more snugglies, too. Are there any other goodies that you need that I can send? More catnip, kitty treats, etc.? Let me know, I'll see what I can do.

This will probably be my last shipment for awhile ( so get your order in :) ), I have some fall projects that I'd like/need to finish up :

Husband: What happened to the kitchen curtains?
Greyling: Oh, I'm sewing some new ones.
Husband: When will they be finished?
Greyling: Oh, not 'til fall. You don't want curtains up in the summer anyway. They just get dusty. :devil

Hope to mail by the end of next week. :dance (Dancin' as fast as I can)

I'm working on some more things for you.

You know what's great!? When I get towards the end of a skien, I take the little bit that is left and make s quick spiral for the cats or just a little flying saucer disc thing. Then I have no wasted yarn. I throw them in a ziplock bag with catnip, and when it's full, I'll mail it. Good for me, good for the kitties. :)

Big news!
We adopted a kitty this morning! Yes we did! She came in with 3 other litters from a "collector". We managed to find most of them foster homes since they are not socialized at all, but this little one was not looking to hot. She is very lethargic, and I was worried she was sick, so I thought her chances would be better with me.
So I took her straight to our vet, and she has ear mites, worms, and is dehydrated, but other than that she looks like she is ok. The gave her a shot of fluid and vitamins, and some glucose (I think) and a prescription for her ears and her worms. We are guessing she is about 12 weeks old. She is pretty scrawny, and a bit shy, but I am just in love.
The lady was feeding them a mix of Special Kitty and Meow mix. So I bought her some real kitten food and she devoured it and drank up her water like she had never had any before.
Our other kitty (and adult male) is doing really well with her. He is cleaning her and laying with her after just a couple of hours. Well..he lays ON her...like he is trying to hatch her, but she doesn't seem to mind at all. She is even using the litter box like a big girl! I didn't really want a baby, but something about her is just special. I think we may end up getting one of the adults anyway, My husband just adores the kitty at the shelter name Kyle. I cringe at the thought of 3 cats though. That would put our house at max capacity!!

So here she is! Introducing Reesa!

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a302/luvmuffin/Newkitty5.jpg

And here she is getting her first bath from her new brother Bruin. He is such a gently soul.

Hubby wasn't all that thrilled to bring home a sickly cat. But he thinks she is cute and thats a good start.

Denny, the pattern is a mile-a-minute my MIL made about 28 years ago, when my hubby was toddler. She just sent me the pattern book! It an awesome pattern, but the colors are a little harsh. Its a peachy-orange and white with darker peachy-orange. I want to make one in more subdued colors for my living room.

I am just in love with this little girl. She is so very cuddly. Maybe because she is sick and she can't get away :) I can't wait until she gets well enough to get that kitty energy.

Wildflwr, thank you so much! I love the pillowcases! I can see the kitties getting a real kick out of hiding in them. And the blankies are so thick!

And my friend in Fairbanks ( I don't know your screen name) thank you for the little wiggles and the homespun blanket!

I appreciate all the work and time you have all invested in helping me out with the shelter.

PS
Reesa is doing wonderful. She had a really really scary problem with diarrhea. She became more lethargic and really dehydrated. She had more vet visits than my older cats combined ever did. They never could find the cause of her illness. But she is recovering and doing all the things a kitten should. Keeping us up at night with her antics and foot-eating. The vet said if we had not taken her she would have declined quickly and most likely have died. So I am sure now that it was meant to be, she was meant to come home with me.

Here is pic of her in her favorite napping spot. I have to slouch back so she doesn't slide off, but she doesn't seem to mind. I love my little fuzz. She has grown alot, and its so wonderful to see her healthy.

More pics!
I dropped by the shelter this afternoon to do some cleaning and get some of the latest goodies delivered. I had some blankets of homespun, crocheted pillowcases, some kitty beds, and some leftover spiders on a string.
As usual it was a mad house of cats trying to get all the goodies to themselves.

The homespun blankies went over really well! They were grabbed and then dragged off like prey.

It was nice to have alot of catnip to sprinkle all over the toys, beds and blankies.
Here is a hilarious pic of one of the cats with a spidey!

And a lovely torty in her new clean happy bed!

And last but not least some of the sick cats got love and goodies. This boy still somehow ended up with 2 blankies and a bed! And then he snagged a catnip filled sock as I was walking by with it in my hand. When we left he was on cloud nine!

Hi Tapanga, I am new here and your thread was what got me to join. I have been making a few crocheted cat blankies for the last few months and had not found someplace to donate them yet. Was going to do it locally but I think your shelter is more in need. I wanted to ask though, I have a used cat bed that our late Ms. Kitty loved but our new Harley doen't fit in. Can I send it along too or do you just want new things? Oh and could you pm me your address to send them to.

Tapanga
September 4th, 2006, 05:14 AM
Used is just fine! Just as long as you wash it first, or I can when I get it, it would be very loved!
Whatever you send would be appreciated. I actually got an email tonight from a lady that runs another shelter and she was asking me if I would donate any leftovers. Apparently word has gotten around and so I am guessing I am going to be one busy lady!
Its sad, but most of our local shelter are pretty destitute. I think its because of all the rural areas, and there is little no funding for them. If its alright with everyone, when I get this place set up with enough blankets, would you all mind if I bring all the extras to other shelters?
I think I have a way to go before I get there. I finally got a good head count from the lady that runs the Humane shelter. We have over 250 cats in the shelter as of today. Makes me sweat to think about it!

I thought the homespun might not be thick enough but obviously they don't think so. :) I think I may have some laying around and will start working on another box for you.

Sounds like you will definitely be busy now that the "word has got out" :) and other shelters have asked for help too.

Do you still need catnip too?...my son told me his friend has big bags of it for his cats and I was going to see if he could find out where his friend got it from....all I could find were the small bags.

Oh! I have big huge jumbo skeins of a yarn that I just don't like working with much. I'm thinking if I ball it and work 2-3 strands together, it would be GREAT for cat beds. It's varigated yarn, so it may blend funny, but it's soft and would be perfect for kitty blankets. I'll get right on that! :)

And there is an envelope of toys in transit.

You may want to list your shelter with Hugs for Homeless Animals (http://www.h4ha.org/). There is information about making "Snuggles" as well as a complete listing by state as to registered shelters in need of snuggles. They list sizes to make the Snuggles and offer free patterns. The Snuggles Org. now has its own website: http://www.snugglesproject.org/ Check it out - it will be worth your time!
