Question for you all:
What do you do when you only have one ball (lets say
1 3/4 oz.) of yarn. You know, the expensive-to pretty to do without-but can afford only 1 skein-type of yarn.
What would you all make with such a small amount?

a small decorative pillow (maybe crochet on 1 side/fabric on the other)
a lacy scarf?

The pillow idea is a great one, Michelle!
I've had this question in my mind for awhile, but I saw
Rebecca's blog with the pretty yarn her hubby got her and it just prompted me to ask--
Anyone else...?

headband?
I like the idea of the pillow maybe take a step further and make Sachets, I have one my sons gma got me from Pier one that is just a little square pillow with bead tassle on the corners scented vanilla very simple fabric but pretty and I think something like that done with crochet would be very pretty.
Here's a picture of it:

In the new Hip to Crochet book, there is a pillow made of many, many different kinds of novelty yarns like that. It would be overwhelmingly expensive to buy the yarns just for the pillow, but if you end up with lots of left overs from other projects, it would work out great! The pillow is gorgeous. :)h

You could use it as an accent yarn on a scarf, hat, sweater, etc. :fluffy

Look for the book on ebay or Amazon. I think they had it the cheapest when I was searching. It also gives me a reason to buy more to make sure I get the $25 free shipping. ;)

Amazon was $13.26 when I ordered it. I got 2 books for that price and chose the free shipping. It was $27 then, not bad and I'm going to be stalking the mailbox until it arrives. I have seen the book at Michaels too, for $19.99 - if you were lucky enough to get a 40% coupon it would be $11. Yes, I did all the math before I ordered. <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/cloud9.gif" />

scarves are my passion.. you can always make a thin scarf for an accessory... or use it as a stole for a dress.
or you can always create a friendly afghan made of squares (granny or other) from everyone that's purchased one ball of beautifully expensive yarn.
Or.. you can make a small doily and then frame it... many uses!

Is it the kind of yarn that would make a small clutch purse? or a container for the top of your dresser - to hold your watch/rings/earrings? <img border=0 src="http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v84/crochetville/huh.gif" />

the one that i'm really scratching my head about is a "rail road" yarn - you know what i mean?
and i really need to do something with it. hubby was all kinds of excited about getting it for me :fluffy
i will update my blog with a close-up of it today.:camera

Railroad yarn works up nicely either by itself or with another yarn. Double stranding it with something else gives it more body, if that's what you want. I used a railroad yarn (Berroco Zen) with a slightly furry yarn (Skacel Gatto) in the blue version of my Alternating Windowpanes Scarf (http://www.crochetme.com/alt_windowpanes_scarf.html).

donna - do you happen to have a close close-up of that? :camera and, then, how much did it take to make that oh so fabulous pattern?

I'm sure I do have a close up. Let me check. As for how much was required, I'm going to make you go back and look at the pattern. :lol As they used to say on that Ragu commercial, "It's in there!" :wink

Okey dokey, Rebecca. Here's all the close-ups of the yarn I used for my scarf (http://www.crochetme.com/alt_windowpanes_scarf.html). Hope it's helpful! And thank you for the compliment on my pattern!! :blush

If there's about 100 yards, I make a hat. I make LOTS to hats to test out yarn. If there's not enough to make a hat, then you use it as a stripe in a hat, or a brim of a hat. You just can't go wrong with hats.
The pillow idea is killer. If there's not enough for a front and back, just make a front with it. If there's not enough for either, make a trim of it! Now I need to go make me some pillows

I use my left-overs (when I get around to it, that is) to make granny squares or motifs for "Grandmother's Flower Garden Afghan," which I am going to finish some day.
I've also used small amounts to crochet a litte band to put at the bottom of my dtr's jeans since they're usually too long and I'm too lazy to hem them. Just chop them off and stitch on a decorative border. In fact, I'm going to try Sutty's 5-petal flower stitch for just that... Better get to work!

with the railroad yarn I would make a small purse. with the the other yarn, if its eyelash or metalic or furry, I would use it to accent cuffs or shawl collar on a sweater or maybe an edge to a kids blanket or kids funky hat?

I've been seeing lots of accessories like wrist bands just a small little strip with a couple of buttons and ones made of crocheted flowers also flower pins would make great gifts they're really in this year, and you can pin them on everything.

I use those small skeins of pretty yarn to make hair scrunchies. They always look cute and when you're freezing in your office (like I am all the time!) I take my hair down and wear it on my wrist as a little bracelet. :) Some days, I just put it on as a bracelet and forget about the ponytail. :lol
You can also use it for accents to other projects, like Vivi suggested. :D
I've also been thinking about using it as accents to stuffed animals. Maybe use one as a body (like a shirt) on a teddy bear or something?

I have made scarves w/those yarns. You hold both strands together and either knit or crochet it. I made a triangle scarf and someone bought it right off my back!! :2 They come out just wonderful. And it only takes the one ball of railroad yarn and not even a full skien of the fur.

Donna,
the scarf is gorgeous! I have one ball of trio (cp yarn) in blue jean colors, and have eyelash yarn in the same colors..just waiting for your pattern!
If you want to make a keepsake from the yarn, I've seen a pattern for a pretty angel with the dress being lengths of elegant yarn. The head and hands are porcelain, with crocheted wings.. a lovely decorative item not just for Christmas. Will keep an eye out for that pattern, and when I see it again, be happy to add the link:)
