I've been considering trying to sell some things on Ebay, but I'm put off by the need to provide my checking account information along with my credit card info. Can anyone tell me about your experiences with this? I already have a pay pal account.

Oh, I think I put this in the wrong place. Can someone move it for me? :bang

Dot, I sell on ebay and have been a member for 3 years. I've never had problems with them with my credit card information.

I sell on there also - under two different ids...one for sock monkeys and one for crochet. I haven't been burned yet - keep my fingers crossed! Also, i've only had one person that had a problem and it was on there end - so, so far only positive experiences. I am hesitant about putting my credit card and checking info - but so far so good.

I've been a member since 2001 and never had a problem. They use the info to verify who you are and have a way to collect the selling charges.

One thing to watch out for, if you ever get an email that looks like it's from Ebay or Pay Pal asking you to click on a link in the email and update your info, don't. They are some *very* authentic looking emails sent by spammers. If you think there might really be a problem, go to the Ebay.com site directly (not through the email link) and update it that way.

We've bought things on ebay, and listed things. We've never had any trouble but my brother has gotten one of those emails that Holly mentioned. They are frauds. I was just thinking today that I might put some of my scarves on ebay and see if they sell. Let us know how you do if you put things on!

Hi Dot!

I've been selling on ebay for a while now, and it's pretty easy. So far, all of my transactions have gone quite smoothly. Ebay is really good about updating you on when you have to pay them their fees, and paypal automatically deducts it.

I have had one recently bad experience. I've been selling a crocheted item on ebay like wildfire. It's my own design and my own "spin" on it. I don't have a patent on the pattern - so I figured lots of copies would appear once people realized I was doing well. No problem :)) I love to see new takes and spinoffs - it's neat to see what people will do with an idea.

Unfortunately, there is one seller who has directly copied my (and another sellers) ideas. He or she completely ripped off the other seller's pattern and stylings, and chose to directly lift items from my advertising copy. I know this sounds really picky, but it really annoyed me that this person couldn't come up with their own description of the item. It was pretty silly - to the point of describing something as felted when it obviously wasn't and also using the same color descriptions (and I use some pretty weird adjectives when I describe colors - not common ones)...also direct phrases from my description. I just kept thinking, can't you write your own darn description? Again, it sounds smarmy but this person took what I'd written and lifted it directly. It irks me when people refuse to use their brains! :U

This proved that, while selling on ebay can be lucrative, it can also be kind of a let down - I was all excited because people were buying my stuff but got rather soured when this other seller was doing this. That's really only been my bad experience - otherwise it's been nice.

my 2 cents
Melissa

PS - sorry for the rant! :bad

Dot, I have never had trouble with them knowing my account info. I posted on my blog awhile back about an email I recieve from "ebay" wanting me to click a link to verify my account info. I knew it was false but there is an email (you can get if off of their website) that you can forward any mail you have a question about and they will tell you if they sent it or not.

Thanks, Kari and Melissa. I appreciate your input. I'm really leaning toward putting some things out there just to see what happens. :hug

Dot, I have been buying on eBay for years and have sold a few things there, too. Never had a problem. But as Kari mentioned, beware of those bogus e-mails asking you to verify your account info. They are not really from eBay. Just don't ever click on any stuff like that you get in your e-mail and you will be safe. eBay never sends out account verfication e-mails like that.

Hi,
I list things almost everyday to sell on eBay..that is the money I use for the extras in life(such as yarn, car insurance, more yarn, and all of our Christmas gifts). I also have two accounts now, one for buying, one for selling..and the credit card info is just an extra safety measure used by eBay.
Don't ever click on any link in a letter from eBay or PayPal that says your account needs to be checked, forward it directly to spoof@ebay.com or spoof@paypal.com.

That all being said, I crochet lots of things to sell to people locally...and thought that my 17 old son's girlfriend would appreciate a jacket made from eyelash yarn (they do turn out so nice!)..well, he is embarassed to even ask her if she would like one..he said she wouldn't want anything 'homemade'...:mad :th
So, I've made the decision not to give him any money to purchase her a gift :bad ..is that being too vindictive? I'm sure the eyelash yarn was more expensive than any small gift he would buy her, lol! They are both total snobs-

Thanks for 'reading', I'm sure I'll feel better about in a few days.
Off to help carve pumpkins, a guy in our neighborhood decorates his house with over 2500!! carved pumpkins each year...it brings crowds from miles away, and this year his usual volunteers aren't able to help. I love to do stuff like that! (He has a huge victorian house, and even has pumpkins and bats on the roofs...just too cool for words!)

Wow. Intersting about the pumpkins.
I wonder if you whould make the jacket anyway?
Could you give it to someone else if she didn't want it? Or sell it? Hm. Just a thought. (she might like it)
How well does your stuff on ebay sell? And what kind of things? What kind of starting prices?

hey zoe - have you thought about finding one on-line in like spiegel or something and going ":nana see, your dear old mom isn't so UNcool, afterall!"

or finding one on ebay and showing him how much they are being sold for... at 17, it's all about the $$signs---maybe he'll change his mind :shrug

hmmmm, just some thoughts.

oh, and please do show us a picture of that house when it's complete:camera

re the jacket...my son now said he thinks it would be a 'sweet' gift, lol, after showing him several things made from the eyelash yarn and showing him the color I had selected for her-

Amber, I mostly sell out-of-print crochet booklets, books, etc...once in a while I have a few knitting patterns, and also sell a few baby crochet patterns from the UK. I never sell copies of patterns, and try not to sell published patterns that are available free on the 'net.
I've met so many wonderful people thru selling on eBay...and even though it takes a good bit of time and can be frustrating once in a while, I generally enjoy doing it. I do try to keep up with what is selling each week, so I can either list similar things or list things that people seem to be searching for (hope that makes sense!)
E-mail me anytime if you want to 'talk' about eBay:)

Three days left until they end.
