Hi....I'm on the hunt for some Crochet "Oriental" patterns. :D

I can't seem to find much. :think I'm looking for ANYTHING that looks nice to put in my home to make it look Japanishish...hee hee. All I find is Amigurumi on ebay, but I really want something a bit different now. :blush
Can you please help me? Thank you!

Sushi tissue roll cover. You could also close off the bottom to make it a pillow:

Don't know how Japanese this is really but it says it is. Japanese Flowers Centerpiece (doily):

Sushi ornaments, you don't have to put the hanger part on and have them sit out all year, scroll down for instructions:

Sushi chair pad:

I know I know, a lot of 'sushi' around the house doesn't make it really look like Japanese inspired decor. You can go here:

http://www.microrevolt.org/knitPro/

Find a nice image and graph it out. I also suggest using it to graph out Japanese letters. Make a couple of pillows, afghan, wall hanging, etc.

Uuuuugh....WTF was THAT?!?

and not to be the PC police, but Asians find "Oriental" to be a bit derogatory.

I know I'm just being overly sensitive to what was just an innocuous comment meant to be 'funny', but still....

How about . . .

. . . or

I got hits by using Asian as the key word.

I like the idea of graphing something out. There are wonderful old geisha prints that would be fabulous. Some of the Japanese castles and surrounding gardens would also make wonderful afghans! Someone suggested some of the Japanese symbols -- find out how to write your name in Japanese! That would be a fabulous filet crochet piece. You guys are giving me some great ideas!

But all this sushi is making me hungry and I'm sitting here with a lousy yoghurt sigh. I'm going to have to go to Fontana Sushi (great little restaurant in southwest Denver) after I hit Michaels and Hobby Lobby today, that's all there is to it!

I just found what seems to be a fabulous site for translating names into Japanese or Chinese: http://japanese.about.com/bltattoo.htm. Most seems to be free and I didn't get any annoying pop-up ads (!) while perusing the site. It appears to be accurate, because I know what my name looks like in Japanese and that's what it looked like on this site!

So this may be a good resource for graphing names for afghans or filet crochet!

I second the idea of graphing or filet-crocheting an Asian design you like. "Japanese crochet" is basically all western style, since they didn't have the tradition of crocheting, although their designs tend to be more delicate (and often small and cute) in general. The typical Amigurumi style reflects the cutsy cartoon style that is common in Japanese pop art.

I have recently acquired some Japanese crochet books (I'm a Japanese expatriate). When they say "pattern", they mean "charts", so if you can read charts, you can kind of figure it out, depending on the pattern. It sure helps to get the fine points of instructions from the writing, though. Again, almost all published designs are western-style.

The Blue Williow afghan is pretty; I like the color scheme. BTW, the picture on it looks Chinese to me. Good luck!

Boo Hoo......noooo I can't knit. Although I did try! I'm just not that good at it :think I feel much happier with my crochet. But thank you sooo much for the knitting patterns anyway. I stored them away j-u-s-t incase....ya never know.

Sakurasaku- Well, sounds like your really know your stuff! Ya know, I've done only simple graphing, (hearts, letters, etc.) but never thought about doing a bit more technical work .....as in perhaps a Geisha, or... hmm, I'm going to go investigate more on the graphs now Sakurasaku...... :sher You have me thinking!
Thank you!!
