Ladies, I am joining one of the Red Hats Group, and I want to crochet my own hat. Yes, I have several patterns, but I wanted imput and help from you all. I live in Florida and it is so hot, so I want a pattern that is cool to wear, something maybe with a open weave, or holes in it, lol. Most of my patterns are closed stitches. Think I want the brim also, so any ideas. NO tight to the head look for me. like the skulls etc. Thanks for the help. Note I want a free pattern. and yes I have looked at CPC. :manyheart

I too have been looking for a pattern like that for the whole summer! I wanted to make a sun hat, but I never found it! There are some cute hats in raffia on line....you could look at them for inspiration and even make them in the raffia! That would make it light, airy and a bit sturdy to hold a large brim stiff!

I don't have any patterns for you, but I just have to say that I'm completely jealous of you! I can not WAIT until I'm old enough to join the Red Hat Society!

Lucky you! I hope you have a blast with it!

You can belong to the Red Hat Society at just about any age. If you are younger than 50, you wear a pink hat and lavender clothes. Check in to (or start your own) groups in your area.

BTW, Annies Attic had a pattern posted a while back. It was from 'Hooked on Crochet - April 2004'. Because of copyrights, I can't post it but if you check your local library, you may find a copy of the magazine. :yes

The pattern is for a simple sun hat done in Speed-Cro-Sheen (red) with a crocheted band and flowers as accents.

Berroco Yarns Pattern book #246 includes this "Hippy Hat" crocheted using Berroco Boho Colors. Might be what you're looking for?http://www.royalyarns.com/ptrn/BCO/bc-246/images/246-hippiehat-a.jpg
I'm sure you can find some substitute yarn that would work for you if you want, though the Boho is ribbon-like and I've seen it in a great red/purple mix that would be perfect...

Our Hellen made a beautiful hat for her summer holiday, you could ask her where she got the pattern.

There's a free pattern on http://www.freepatterns.com/categories/index.php?catid=crochet&subcatid=wearables&RECORD_INDEX%28patterns%29=101 for a very pretty & lacy hat that would be perfect for the Red Hat Society if done in red with a purple band around the crown. If the link doesn't work, go to www.freepatterns.com, click on Crochet, then on Wearables. It's on the 101-110 page. AND it's free.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I was wondering about using the wire to keep brim inshape, anybody ever use this, and is there anything I need to know.

I have started one of Dots patterns, I am a little upset over it, as there were major corrections to the pattern, but she has failed to make the correction, I found out by having to read all the comments sections, grrrrrr that makes me so mad. Will make my brim using another pattern or simply work it out myself, but sure wish there were more nice pattern hats, (not the old things form the 50"s) Thanks again for all the help.

Here is another brimmed sort of hat done in cotton, and with wire in the brim to hold it stiff.....it tells you how to do it in the pattern....
