Thank you to SueBee42 for bringing this great cause to my attention. Many of you on here have expressed interest in this cause and want to or are already doing it so I figured we could all do it together to have that extra little push and maybe get a few more scarves out than we would have otherwise.

The original thread started by SueBee42 can be found HERE (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=32561)

The Official Info Page (in PDF format) is HERE (http://www.orphan.org/carepackages/RedScarfRelease010906.pdf)

Also, andiM gave us THIS LINK (http://nownormaknits2.typepad.com/red_scarf_project_2007/) with some addtional information and a place to get buttons.

Like I said, I thought a CAL would be a great idea for this cause to maybe get some more people intersted in it and get a few more scarves going.

My personal goal is one scarf a month until January when they need to be sent. So at least 4 or 5 scarves.

WHO IS WITH ME? :clap

Here are a bunch of patterns to start off with (http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/directory/scarves.php)

I'm in on this CAL! It's a great great cause (I'm a college student and a few of my good friends benefit directly from projects by this organization) and I just finished the newbie CAL. Can someone recommend a "unisex" pattern that works up pretty quickly? Also, I'm clueless about any yarn besides red heart ss... what yarn does everyone like to use for scarves that's really soft? and it's any shade of red right?

I'm with you! What a great cause!

I don't know how many scarves I can make before January but I suppose even one or two would be better than nothing! But I love making scarves and the thought that they're going for a good cause is very motivating! And that they have to be red is just more icing on the cake!

I did this last year and just bought red and white yarn the other day to make the scarves

Can someone show me where on the site that it says they are in fact doing this again this year? I must be blind, because I can't find it - all the information looks like it was for January 2006. I heard about this about this a while ago and sent them an email but did not receive a reply. I'd love to do it, but want to make sure they are doing it again.

Thanks!!

Let's see it's the holidays coming up...

Probably the busiest time of the year for me.

Oh well...I'm in. :D One scarf a month for the next four months.

Can someone recommend a "unisex" pattern that works up pretty quickly?

Scarves are simple and quick. I haven't tried this one, but this one should work up quickly.

http://homespunjenn.blogspot.com/2005/10/some-patterns.html

And of course you can use any combination of colors. I'm thinking maybe a red and black. I love red and pink together, but that might be too feminine.

Count me in! I should(hopefully), be able to crank out four scarves by January.

Crochet Cronies - I just did one in LB Homespun in Antique Red for myself..it's so soft! Time to go out and get more, I guess!

Count me in also. Love to make these, simple ones out there and lots of yarn to choose from.
Yarns I have used and have been very happy with the results:

Soft & lofty
Homespun
RH Super Saver
Lion Brand Colorwaves
Any BoucleI have found that depending on the size of the skein, you can make at least one with a skein.

Pattern used is alternating a SC row, then a row of DC until skein runs out.
I will often use the hook recommend on the wrapper.

Ankey - I guess I AM blind. :) Thanks!!

I'm in on this too! I've been looking for a charity I felt good about donating too and this is it! I'll try to get 4 done by Jan too.

I'm totally in! I'll commit to at least one a month, hopefully more. What an awesome charity. I had some friends growing up that were in foster care, and two of them were lucky enough to stay with their families, but one was kicked out on his 18th birthday. Awful.

Brandybuck

Tiga - that's horrid. Was it because they could no longer receive money from the state when he hit 18?

Tiga

Geek'sGirl -

Yeah, pretty much. This was back in the 90's, before there were ANY programs to help foster kids transition to adult life. So many just wound up kicked out at age 18. My friend actually thought it would be a good idea to rob a store and get caught, so at least he'd go to jail and have a place to stay.

Luckily, we were able to talk him out of that bright idea. He stayed with friends while he finished up high school, then was able to move in with his girlfriend's family for awhile. I lost track of him after that, but saw him a few years later; he was married with a baby on the way and had a decent job, so at least his story didn't have a tragic ending. But he was really, really smart, and could have gone far with the right family behind him.

You can count me it. I think I can definitely make at least one a month from now until January. This seems like a very good cause. I actually picked up some red fleck Woolease that was on clearance after I saw the original post about this. I plan on picking up some homespun too...I just love it for making scarves.

I dont think they HAVE to be Red... They picked red because they give them out around valentines day. The site says any unisex color is welcome.

I've already completed 1 black & White scarf... and have another B & W in the works.

Thanks for clarifying that they don't have to be red for me too - I had been looking around to find a good "unisex" shade of red... :) Black and white seems like a good idea as well. I'm trying to think of other unisex colors because my goal is to make 2 scarves and tomorrow I'm going shopping for all the yarn I will be using for the rest of the year.

I have really been wanting to try Patons SWS and there is one called natural earth that has some reds in it ... I think I will do one in that yarn, and one in Lion Suede ... with garnet and either a mocha or taupe stripe, I think those will be pretty unisex ... can't wait to get started!

Used Bernat Denim Style last year. DH saw the scarves, mentioned that they were nice and soft, asked if one was for him, I said no, he pouted (just a little). Poor guy. This year I'll make sure one is for him. :wcold

Count me in too, and Mom. I'm having my wisdom teeth removed in early December and have saved my sick time for that. Mom is coming for the holidays this year, and she'll be needing some projects to keep her hands busy. This is a lot smaller and might accomodate an achy head and jaw better than a Project Linus blanket. Plus I have some leftover skeins (complete ones) of Homepsun from other projects that would make nice, neutral scarves. Thanks for posting the link to the website!

Well I had a bit of an epiphany this weekend and decided hey, I'm not going to crochet gifts for family this year. Too stressful--since I hadn't started yet!--and with a new baby there's less time. (They all got scarves last year anyway.) I just want to work on a few projects and not feel like I HAVE to get a lot of things finished.

What this means of course is more time to make scarves for this project!

So I went through my stash and found some Wool-Ease in Camel, Red, Black, and Chestnut Heather which I think will make a good unisex scarf. I think I will use Camel as the main color and put in stripes of the others. I'm going to look through my books and see if I can find a stitch pattern I want to use, otherwise I may just half-double it.

:hook Hi and yes you do have to send them to the organization in January. When it gets closer to the deadline they will post more information. Here are some links below for more information. The 2nd link provides a look at what other people are working on so far. Plus if you have a blog, they've got really cool blog buttons! :yes

I'm in!! I luv this project!! :clap

Here's a copy of the guidelines.

Scarf guidelines:

Size: approximately 60” long and 5” to 8” wide. Scarves should be long enough to be wrapped around the neck with tails long enough to be tied in the front.
Style: Think unisex collegiate. Fringe optional. Should drape, tie easily and be soft.
Color: Red! This could mean burgundy, cherry, russet, red stripes with other colors, multicolor hues including red. Other unisex colors, including black, navy, gray, teal, olive or gold, are also welcome to be included.

Finished & tagged: Yarn ends securely sewn in.For the personal touch, attach a tag saying “Handmade for You” with your first name, city, and group affiliation, if any. Donors have also included washing instructions, messages of encouragement, and gift cards/burger bucks/book of stamps.

I'm in! I had already completed a red-and-blue striped scarf before I came across this CAL, and I'm in the middle of a red-and-grey striped one. I'm keeping them simple -- J hook, half-double throughout -- so I can try to get several done in time.

I'm thinking about donating them on behalf of my parents and stepparents, in lieu of making separate gifts for them. After all, I just gave everyone scarves last year, so it's a little soon to be giving them more... and I don't have enough time to make anything much larger than that, what with final exams and all. And I think this is a project all my folks could get behind.

Ooh, I love all three scarves. I finished my third scarf on Friday, and am going to start another tonight. I realized I have 3/4 skeins of Homespun in blue and off-white that are gender neutral, so that'll be the next one. What a great way this is to use up those leftover skeins that you know you'll never be able to match the dye lot to. It's made a tiny dent in my stash, which really needs to be dented. Patty

Well, here are the scarves Mom and I crocheted (and shh, 2 are knitted) for the Red Scarf project. Sorry the photos are so washed out, but the USB cable for my camera went wonky last week and I had to use my webcam to take the photo. The two on the outside on the back are Homepun, the one on the back in the middle is Plymouth, the two reds and blue on the seat are Caron, and the variegated on the seat is RH. Various styles were made (ribbed, dc, dc in alternate back and front loops, and shh, garter stitch). I made another red one this week, but I knitted it and tried to get fancier than my knitting skills allow and the darn thing is just rolling up at the edges. Grrr. Anyway, these will be mailed out Monday. What a great way to use up stray single skeins and skeins and a half left over from other projects (and no one I know wants another scarf from me! They are scarfed out!). Enjoy! Pattyhttp://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a383/DesertCrocheter/Scarves/Picture15.jpg
