Welcome aboard Karen!

Well, I stopped by Wally World this morning and picked up 6 skeins of Simply Soft in Soft Blue! I love the color and cannot wait to get started on this thing! I really hope to make this quickly so that I'll have time to enjoy wearing it during the only chilly months down here, Dec & Jan!

What color are you using?

Okay, I must be nuts :loco, but I'm in too! I have so many irons in the fire :juggle , whats one more, right! This is too pretty to pass up and will definately keep me out of trouble. I need to go yarn shopping :shop and wish I knew about this a couple of days ago since I just placed an order from Knitting Warehouse, but thats the way it goes! Maybe I'll place another!!! Donnalynn, thanks for organizing this! :hito Karen!!!

I might or might not make this but was looking over the pattern and found an error/typo. Under "materials" it states that the H hook is for the buttons only, yet under "gauge" it states "in V-stitch pattern, using H hoook...". I think that should read "using I hook". Just FYI.

Welcome aboard! The more the merrier!

Well I got started on this and there was something that was a little "unclear" so I wanted to make sure you guys didn't have to frog a row twice before getting it.

If making the small size, only do Row #2
if making the medium, do only Rows 2 & 2A
if making the large, do Rows 2, 2A and 2B.

Hope this helps everyone!!!

P.S. Yes, you do want to use the "I" hook for the body of the sweater, although I'm using a J since I want mine to be a little bit larger.

Welcome aboard everyone!

Trish, the color really sounds lovely! Can't wait to see how everyone's turns out!

I found another error!

Row #10 says to repeat Row #7, however, if you do this, your count will be off on Row #11. Instead you should repeat Row #9 instead of #7. This makes the counts on Row #11 line up correctly.

I would like to do this pattern without the collar ruffles --which sort of defeats the purpose but I do Not need ruffles at that particular spot and I am so not ruffles anyway....sigh.

Very funny Trish! I get stuck frogging and re-hooking! LOL

Actually, that last correction may not be right afterall. I'll let you guys know once I get this next row done.

Maybe Caron was in too big a hurry to get the pattern out before double checking against errors... :(

Okay, count me in on this one too! I have just about an hours worth of work left on the sweater I am working on now and will start this when I get finished. I have a red sweater I made out of SS that I have been meaning to frog as I don't like how it fits. It would look great turned into this!

Darski- I was thinking the same thing about the ruffles around the neck! I am going to do an edging that will match the stitch used in the ruffle instead.

Goodness, I've only been here a day, and you all already have me jumping in on a CAL! That sweater is beautiful!! I'm thinking of Rubine Red to wear over a black shirt and pants at work. I spend all of my time crocheting for my young daughter or for charities and never make anything for myself, so I deserve this, right??

Now I just need to convince hubby that we need to go into town tomorrow so I can go yarn shopping!!

Karen. Simply Soft is a #4 (Worsted Weight) yarn. Suggests a size 'H' hook.

Hope that helps.

Okay, I've got a question. At the End of Row 7, shouldn't you DC in TCH and THEN CH 2 as you've done in the past couple of rows???? It doesn't indicate a chain 2 here. It simply says to DC in and then DC again. :think

So when your repeating ROW 7 for Row 8 and you CH 5 and DC IN NEXT CH2 SP that would make you put in the the CH2 Space of the first V-stitch. Does that make sense??? Or am I just confusing everyone???:think :(

Maybe this is where its messing up when you get to round 10 and you dont have the correct # of stitches???

100% Acrylic worsted weight yarn, 4 ply
21 st X 24 rows in a 4" square

Red Heart Giant yarn, Bernat Berella 4, Patons Canadiana are close substitutes. Check TLC also.

Krystal ~ Yes, I think you're right. However, if you do an increase at the beginning and end of the rows you have too many stitches and if you don't do the increase you have too few stitches. I went ahead and did the increase since I'm making mine a larger size.

Also, when it gets into the "leaf pattern repeats" the instructions are very confusing. They left out several places where you need to do a V stitch. Basically just remember with the leaf repeats you'll do a Leaf, then a V stitch, then a Leaf, V stitch and so on. When you get to the edging you'll be doing this all the way around.

I wanted to make mine larger so it would fit so I am using a size J hook and added an extra Row #2 to make it a big larger. I also added the increase at the row in question and my main body is done now! It fits me PERFECTLY!!! I am now working on the edging which I am afraid will take a lot longer than the body. The body goes very very fast. The leaf clusters really take a bit of time to make but it's going to be well worth it!

If you stop making this at the 2nd leaf repeat you'd have an adorable little shrug. I almost stopped right there but wanted to do the jacket. I may make another one that ends right there. This pattern was very well thought out but just not written well.

WELCOME aboard everyone!

Simply soft is a #4 WW yarn, however, if you were to use say Red Heart Super Saver, it would turn out a little bit larger so you'd probably need to adjust your gauge with a smaller hook. Regular WW yarn is a tad thicker than Simply Soft. Hope this helps!

This is a beautiful sweater, and I hope to try it someday. However, I think I'd better just finish all the UFOs I have laying around first. If I could be sure my dh wouldn't notice me working on yet another project I'd join this CAl, but I'm pretty sure that he will catch on pretty quickly. he works at home so it's kind of hard to hide projects from him! I'll be watching to see how everyones project comes out though.

It's not silly, like I said, it's written very poorly. Just IGNORE all of the notations in between the rows. It's telling you what you're going to be doing next is all. Just ignore it and keep going! :hook

No problem Krystal! I thought the same thing when I first read that and was like "what"? :think

Ok, I found another "problem" with the pattern.

Row 23 says:
Ch 5, sk first ch-sp, work in patt as established, end with sk tch sp, dtr in 3rd ch of tch, do not turn.

If you do this, it will look stupid. It's telling you NOT to make a leaf in the first leaf, but to skip it and to continue with the pattern all the way around to the beginning and then to skip the leaf. Why in the world would you do that, especially on the MIDDLE leaf cluster of the back? Makes no sense whatsoever! So I am doing Row #23 as I did Rows 20-22.

I really am going to want to make another one of these after I finish mine, not only because it's a great looking item, but it's also pretty much very fast and I think it would make a great Christmas present for a couple of people on my list. I MAY try to go back and write out all the corrections but don't quote me on that! LOL

Anyone else find any errors?

Do I have time for this? Not really. Am I going to do it anyway? You betcha! In the like....11 years I have been crocheting the only things I've ever made myself were a scarf and a hat. I totally deserve this. I'm thinking of making this in white. I'm an odd one and LOVE to wear white in the winter. Ok, I'm an idiot! Ignore my last post!!!!

I was working on the "printed out" pattern and had my row marked. Well as I came in my room to watch TV and work on it, I misplaced my copy so pulled it up on the computer and was looking at the wrong row so it is correct! I am actually on the last row of the "ruffle trim."

Sorry to have made this more confusing! :blush

OK, I picked up my SS yarn today. I went ahead and got the soft sage that the pattern calls for -- when I went to my LYS I realized that I already have shirts and sweaters in almost every variation of red, rose, and purple that they had, and that sage was just so darn pretty!:D

So, I'll start it as soon as I get off the computer. We have the season premiere of Amazing Race coming on this evening, and I can't watch TV unless I have a project to work on. I'll be printing out the posts in this thread so I can follow along with the pattern mistakes and confusing bits as I go. What fun!!

Ok, I had country blue and autumn red in my stash and pleeeenty of it more than enough to finish this, so i picked the red. its kinda maroon/wine like i said. should be pretty. OK! starting row 3! I, too, was eyeballing this in the Interweave mag when i got my copy on thursday. I'm off and running!! thanks for starting this donna! you may have read on another thread about projects we're disappointed with, and I was lamenting about nothing "exciting" me. well, this one did! this just may get me out of my crochet funk. :hook Donna, your new job is my crochet therapist :) LOL!!!

OH! one more thing. I have never been able to perfect doing the base sc chain, so i started mine with just chaining 33 and doing the first row of sc. in order to get the gauge to come out to 11" like the pattern says, I had to go up to a size J hook, but I do tend to crochet tightly.

I found that the error for not having the right stitch count begins on row 6. You have to do ch 5 v stitch in the beginnig v stitch on row 6 and a v stitch in tch space +dc in 3rd tch at the end. I hope this helps someone. I completely missed that and by the time I got to row 11, it didn't work out right.

I love the way the jacket looks. It's great to know that it's a fast project. Thanks for posting the back view, it would be nice if all of the patterns in the magazines showed all sides of the garments. It leaves too much guess work for us.

Thanks Karen for the correction info. I have added it to my pattern.
You are welcome! The pattern is written correctly, but I was just pointing out that you have to pay attention to what's being asked of you because there's some variations on how to begin and end each row.

Ya'll, I've been crocheting for darn near 28 years, and this has to be one of the worst written patterns I've ever tried to follow. I am now frogging row 6 for the THIRD time. Caron could have done a much better job at this. Can you feel my frustration??? LOL :thair

It's cute. The "V" is a bit deep for me though. I love the sleeves. Unfortunately, with two sweaters going (okay, one is still waiting for yarn) I don't think I can join CAL right now. But I'll watch. Maybe I can figure out a way to shorten the V...my hamsterwheel is spinning now!! Definitely worth printing.
Did anyone else notice, this looks similar to one done in the last, or second last, Annies Attic catalogue (theirs was read)? Or is it just me.

OK, I'm up to row 3 and so far so good -- I even figured out the base ch/sc!! I don't think I've gotten to any of the "problem" rows yet, though. I did realize I've been using my H hook this whole time, but the gauge is reading right so I'm going to stick with it a little longer. Now I just need to get off the computer and get back to work!

Row 6 is critical for getting the required stitch counts. Read carefully in the beginning of the row it says to Ch5, v stitch in first sp. There should be 3 leaf repeats. At the end of the row make sure you are putting a v stitch in tch sp, ch 2, then dc in 3rd ch of tch. I think this row is the most confusing, but if you look it over and do it right in the beginning and end then it should turn out right.

Alert the media, I figured it out. It took 5 froggings, reading the pattern about 20 times, and two extra strength tylenol's, but I got it. 3 leaf repeats. WHEW!!!!!!

Sorry Craftybutterfly but I just got onto my computer tonite. Hubby and I were watching Mythbusters! LOL If I'm not mistaken, row 6 gave me troubles too. Basically you do a leaf, then a v then a leaf then a v then a leaf and v's around... I'll have to double check, but I think that's what it was.

Someone earlier mentioned this pattern had no errors. Not correct! We have spotted several errors like the blaring one at the beginning telling you to use the wrong sized hook! LOL I also know that in one row it doesn't tell you the right sequence and leaves one V stitch out. Caron definately did not check this for errors before sending it out to the public!

Ok, I'm stopping for the night at row 11. Row 6 was more than a challenge! LOL. But I think I got it licked now. If I every make this again, I'll re-write the pattern first. This is not for the faint at heart, simply because of the way it's written. Looking at it now, this really could be an easy pattern, had it been written a bit more clearly and without all the mistakes. I agree Donna, seems like Caron got in too much of a hurry to get it out there and didn't bother to check it for errors and clean up the writting style first. :hook But that happens sometimes with these patterns. Like the lacy leaf cocoon sweater in the last Interweave. It has two pages of corrections on the web site. Eh, such is life. ;)

Well I started the sleeves. I don't see anything wrong with what is written, but that first row is a little confusing just because of the way my armhole looked and I don't really like the hdc thing but it's on the inside of the arm so it won't be seen. For everyone in warm areas, it actually looks cute if you just make like 8 or 10 rows of the sleeve and leave the ruffle off. I would leave mine like that if it didn't get so cold around here. I need all the sleeve I can get.

Good job on the no-conflict row 6. I screwed it up and realized it at row 11, so I just kinda winged it for that row so it was even.

:( UUUgh...you know what...this could have been my problem I was having with row 11. Soooo once again for the third time, I'll be doing the dreadful "frogging"...oh god that hurts :ohdear :faint. I'm hoping that this is the only area sofar that needs fixed.

I may come back and put a few more rows on the neck ruffle, but i just can't deal with that right now. Might have to wait till this weekend for pics though, cause I have no batteries for my digi cam and I won't see anyone that does till Saturday.

I just bought a button. It's like a fake family crest with a lion and a unicorn on either side of the crest thing and below it, it says HONOR. But...I think I'm going to end up using a big rhinestone butterfly pin as a closure and not put a button on at all. That way I can mix and match pins to go with the shirt I wear under the sweater. I'll just save the "honor" button for another project.

In retrospect, it really is an easy pattern, with the exception of row 6 (which should only have THREE leaf repeats, cant tell you how long it took me to figure that out). I will definatly be making another one. One other change I had to do is when putting it together and making the chains for the underarm. The pattern said chain 5, but I chained 7, because chain 5 was just too snug. Also, Donna your pictures helped out alot with helping me figure out where to put the second repeats (row 11 I think?), so I really appreciate your posting those. Now, lets hope it fits when i'm done :)

:(I have to admit that this pattern is really testing my nerves, lol. I finally got all 6 rows worth of frogging all crocheted up once again and of course (because my luck is just so wonderful) I ended up getting stuck again. I was about to say the heck with it all. BUT I stopped myself, calmed down and looked up the picture that Donna had shared with us. Apparently from the look of the picture compaired to my work there was a V skipped in row 12. Well that's how I'm accepting it as. I don't think I have the strength to wing this on my own...hubby and I are both in moods right now...not good, lol. So once I'm feeling a bit better I'm going to go back to working on it.

I thought I was cruising here but I hit row 11 and I'm confused. I am making the large size, and it says ch 5, V in first ch-sp, V in next 7(I have a total of 7 till I hit the corner V), V in next corner V, base ch/sc 5 for underarm, sk sts of armhole, V in next corner V!

Help!

Do I do my first V in the corner V, do the base chain thing, then the second V in the same corner V of the first, leaving the ch/sc stitches free? :think :think :think :think :think

Hi all,

I started the jacket way back on page 1 of this thread. I used caron one pounder (cape cod blue) for the large sized jacket instead of simply soft, since that's what I had on hand, with a j-hook. I'm on row 4 of the body ruffle.
I already finished the sleeves, although I have to admit I didn't need 4-5 rows, short arms. I also did a couple of decreases in the width of the arm.
Thank you Donna for the corrections and photos, they are a big help.

Ok, Row #11 if I remember correctly is where you make the armholes. The instructions are confusing. You do end up going to the stitch suggested, but what you are doing is skipping all the stitches in between so that when you attach it, you've got a hole for your arm. Does this make sense?

To be honest, the sweater isn't hard at all to make and the errors are minimal. Just follow the pattern VERY carefully, watch out for Row 6 (read previous posts about how to do it), watch out for Row 11 (again, check posts about it), and count your stitches at the end of each row to make sure they match up so you don't have to frog it later on down the road. I'm not having a problem with the difficulty of the pattern (thanks to the pointers on this thread), I just need more crochet time!! Today I was at Pee-Wee football games from 9:30 AM till 3:30 PM (daughter cheers for one team, sone plays on another). I've got my eye on this CAL, if I ever get my 200 Blocks 'ghan finished.

Everyone who's having problems with the pattern should send an email to Caron at this address: public_relations@caron.com. Describe the problems you are having and ask if there is official errata. I emailed a publisher recently about a pattern and received an email from the author of the pattern! So, it can't hurt to ask for help. They like to know people are interested in the patterns they provide, not to mention it helps promote their product.

I am planning on adding a row (or two) to the fringe as I want a little more than what the pattern calls for when I try it on. So tired of frogging this thing.:2frog

Ok, found another error. When you start the ruffle edge, it says for Row 4-6, repeat row 3...but there is no row 3, so we have to assume it means repeat row 2. So watch that. As for errors being minimal, I found atleast 3. I get up tight easy, that being said, to me even one error is too many, and I still say it could have been written better. Alas!! I'm nearly done. All in all, I agree, it is an easy pattern. I was out of town this weekend, so i didnt get it finished, but i hope to put the sleeves on tonight. Lets see some pics you guys!!! I'm eager to see they're all turning out.

Ok, I believe I added an extra Row #2A (the first increase row). That, along with the larger hook gave me the size difference that I needed.

I agree, Crafty, that this really is an easy design and pattern, it's just written very poorly. It's kinda like the seraphina shawl in that respect. Once you figure out what the designer meant it goes really fast!

P.S. It's never too late to join in! You can join at any time!

Hey, y'all. I just joined crochetville today...specifically because I wanted to try this pattern...but I freaked out when I read the directions. I surely do think your experience will help me! I can't start this project for myself for a while...gotta get Christmas gifts done first. Will it be too late to join up after Christmas? Will I still be able to read your posts then? Thanks!

There is a round 3. For some reason it didn't print in bold like all the other rounds. I was puzzled when I got to that point also then just started looking over it and it's there. It begins with ch 5, cl in next ch-2, etc.

Okay, I'm on the collar edging thingy and I have to say, I'm really hating this pattern right now. I'm tempted to leave off the ruffled edges stuff and just put on the sleeves and leave it at that. I just sorta winged it in the pattern when things didn't add up like they should and Right now I'm not in the mood to try and figure this thing out. What do you all think? Do you think it would look okay without the ruffled collar edging stuff and just with the sleeves? I hate to rip (or throw it out, because thats what kinda mood i'm in right now) this thing away after all the hard work and the material that I bought and put into this thing. I loved how Donna's turned out without the sleeves or ruffled collar or anything. But I'd atleast like to have the sleeves on mine because it does get cold down here and this would be the first long-sleeved garment that i've ever made.

Suggestions?

I SOOOO know what you mean. I ended up winging it myself on the ruffle, and mine is a bit different than the pattern because of this. I personally think it would look really cute either way. I had said early that I would make this again, but in reality, probably not. Not anytime soon anyway. I have to start work on the Amish Beauty afghan for my prayer partner at church right away if it's to be done in time for Christmas. Put the sleeves on, then see how you like it. It is a really cute sweater, but the pattern gave me more than one head ache, and I have other projects to get done, so I'm moving on.

I know what you mean. I was almost in tears from being mad at the pattern, when I knew I could make this, but with all the incomplete instructions, that kinda killed the mood for me. BUT I am going to make another I think (not rushing it though) and I'm going to mark down more of what I need to know or what adjustments I have made. We'll get thru this some how, lol:hug

I guess I've joined in on this, considering I started last night!!! :) This is very bad as the last thing I need is another project... and the yarn budget is nonexistent these days... BUT... this is a very cost effective project I must say... Even if i needed to use 6 balls of yarn, Twelve or Thirteen dollars for this is not bad at all... You would not be able to buy someting like this in the store for that much...

I am making it with the Simply Soft Brites Berry Blue. I am done with row 7 now... I only had to frog row 6 once... Honestly, this is not a hard pattern at all... I wouldn't call row 6 an error... it is just very... oversimplified... They want you to make three leaf repeats... that is the jist of it... But with all of the "repeat from **" and "repeat from []" in that row, you forget how many V's you were supposed to do between the leaves!!! :)

I actually have a purse to finish before this weekend for a 'contest' at a nearby LYS... So I don't know if I will be able to work on this much more before Saturday night... The contest is pretty open as far as what you can submit... Felting yarn, nonfelting yarn, purse, backpack tote... the sky's the limit... What I was REALLY surprised about is the submissions don't even have to be made with yarn from the shop!!! The winner gets a $100 gift card to the shop!!! Wish me luck... I am actually making one of those "sak" inspired bags... It is coming out GREAT sofar... I am winging it as I go along...

I sort of joined in this CAL, but I don't think I have posted to this thread yet. I started my jacket earlier this week. I am currently on the ruffle trim and got as far as the first few V's in the corner and got confused so I ended for the night (I was very tired and didn't feel like frustrating myself) How many V's are in the corners?

I really want to try to have it done for my cousins wedding on the 14th. I am using the Plum wine, like a few of you. I was going to do black, but I have so many black sweaters, I figured a little color would do me good. But some said they are using the brown.....and that makes me want to make another!

Thanks for looking at my blog - I am behind in posting FO. The Butterfly Shawl is a CAL here at the ville: http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=29844

The pattern is from the Knit.1 magazine, Summer 2006, Art Issue. It was fun to do and the designer of the shawl joined in. This CAL is still in progress.

I had hoped to get a lot done this weekend, but dh showed back up as his transmission had problems when he left for his trip:eek :( and he's back - so I am hoping I can ignore him and continue doing what I planned like he's still not here.:rofl (Falls under - yeah right).

Never joined a CAL before b/c everyone is done b/f I can come up with the $$ for yarn but here I am this time but...but...but....Help me?:( LOL

I've never made a wearable before but this sweater I thought would look stunning on my daughter so I thought, what the heck! I can make doilies and afghans I can do this if I take my time and just follow the steps, right? I called my daughter in NY and had her look at it and pick out the color she wanted, ordered the yarn (finally!) which came in yesterday.....how Wrong! I was in thinking I could do this.:cry

Everything was going great (or so I thought) until I started on row 12 and now I'm :thair I don't understand what I'm suppose to do when I get to the area in red. "Row 12: Ch 5, V in first ch-sp, *V in next 6 (7, 8) V to underarm, sk next 2 sc, V in next sc, sk next 2 sc*, V in next 6 (7, 8) V, make Leaf by [ch 3, CL, ch 2, dc, ch 2, CL, ch 3] in next V, V in next V, make Leaf in next leaf, V in next V, make Leaf in next V; repeat between * *, V in next 6 (7, 8) V, end with V in tch sp, ch 2, dc in 3rd ch of tch, turn."

When I get next to the bc/sc (I ch'd 5 then sc'd 5 b/c I have NO clue how to do a bc/sc) am I suppose to do a V in the bc/sc thing that's sticking out or did I do it wrong on row 11? I have 9 V's (sz L) if I V all the way to the bc/sc not counting the Ch 5, V in first ch-sp. On row 11 all my counts were perfect except I thought, and couldn't figure out why, or if it was right that I had 4 bc/sc that just seem to stick out there for the sleeves.:think

Can someone please, if you understand what I'm saying try to explain what to do in layman's terms? Please? Pretty Please? :rose

For row 12 the instructions you have in red are performed in the base chain sc loop that's formed for the armhole. I hope that makes sense?!

Nadia,

This threw me as well. In order to make the armhole, you have to skip a bunch of stitches. This is where the stitch markers come in real handy. I had posted on here and had to reread the instructions several times to understand what had to be done.

I don't know if I'm helping here or just adding more confusion. Let me know. I can always post a picture which might help, even though I'm beyond that part.

Good luck

Well, I got as far as the sleeves and although I like the jacket by itself, I have to say that it is NOT flattering on my (ahem) somewhat enlarged body. (I'm struggling with a thyroid problem at the moment and am embarassed at how much weight I've put on...) Anyway, I will probably finish it up and eventually wear it (once I've dropped those danged 20 pounds) but it may go onto the back burner for now. :sigh

Gotta say that I love everyone else's versions I've seen thus far :D and they look fab on you all!

Well, this part is where I had to fudge a little. The 0(1,0) thing is depending on which size jacket you are making - if you're making a small or large, you don't skip any, and if you're making a medium you skip 1.
It was difficult for me to see which stitches were which, because I had taken out my stitch markers. Since it's on the underarm side, it isn't noticeable.
Hope that helps a little!

Gretchen

The V in next st at lower corner thing - I think I just did a V in the next logical space for me. It seemed as if they were calling the area you come to "lower corner", its just a corner. It's really easy to read too much into this pattern.

It does cause one to think how much clearer this would be if the instructions were charted and you could see what they were talking about.

Sorry, I think I might be on a kick to get all patterns charted - it is just so much easier to count and know than to hope the designer didn't miss a step. (you can't miss a step on a chart)

I fudged a bit on the making of the arm and joining but once I got established, I figured out where I was supposed to do the hdc and such and it looks fin. One sleeve done, one sleeve left!!! Fits pretty well so far too! I'm shocked at myself actually.

OK, well, I finished mine this afternoon. I worked on it feverishly all weekend. AND - I don't like it. It's WAY shorter than the picture (I think the girl in the picture next to the pattern is a small but is wearing a size large). Even my sleeves are short. I know I used the right size hook, the right yarn, and I don't crochet particularly tight. Has anyone tried blocking this? Or do you all think I should just frog half of it and add more rows before the ruffling?

I just finished the body of mine. Granted I used a K hook as I am a "big boned" girls with ample chest and broad shoulders, PLUS I tend to crochet very tightly. Well, it is so baggy that it looks horrible on me. So, now I am faced with the question finish it and hopefully my mom or someone else will like it, or frog it and start all over!!!

What do you think?

Posting this again...anyone? Help please!

Okay, I'm working on the ruffle trim for the body...on Rnd 1 what in the name of all that is holy do they mean by (part in bold I'm confused about)...[V in next sc at lower corner, sk next 0 (1, 0)?????????

Please help!!!!!

k, I'm not even started yet, but I think I can help with this one. V in the next sc at the lower corner, then skip the next zero sts = don't skip anything. (so size small and large, no skips, size med, skip 1. hope that helps:yarn

You know, I don't use charts very often, ironically, I pictures of stuff to make ALL THE TIME...but after this pattern, I think I'm gonna be a total convert to charts...I am an experienced crocheter and this pattern is intermediate and I have had to stop and read and reread the instructions more times than with anything else I've ever done...and what annoys me no end is that it just seems like the author and/or Caron didn't bother to test the pattern before putting out to the masses or proofread the instructions...a special note for what 0,1 2,1 would have helped...at least would have helped me...(thanks again MOMcrochet!)

Off my soapbox now...

I guess I am unofficially joining this one, as I started this sweater a couple of days ago - before I saw the CAL for it. I am done with body and ruffle (FINALLY!) and completely miffed by some of the instructions, so I winged alot of it. I also added 6 more rows to the body before the ruffle, adding 2 more leaves in the process for pattern continuity. It would have been way too short for my taste as written. The ruffle was tedious, to say the least, but at least that part is behind me now... LOL.

I may do this in in hot pink for my daughter as a shrug, like someone suggested several pages ago. I think it would be cute.

Because I'm using DMC #3 cotton, I've had to adjust the pattern by adding more stitches and rows...and certainly more rows for the ruffles to make it look anything like the picture on the pattern. It's looking good so far...and it's in a fushia color...the ruffles are tedious, but I think they will be worth all the work in the end...

got the yarn, pattern, needle, and copied the problem areas so i guess i'm good to go.

i hope it turns out well i would like to ask a question though

in the picture the ruffles seem longer and much fuller than in the FOs displayed

on purpose or my eyesight??

I noticed that too lilbopeep...I want the really full ruffles so I'm adding rows to the ruffles...

Hi folks! I am currently making this and just happened to see this thread today.

I have frogged and frogged. I haven't found ANY errors in the pattern so far.......only MY error of not reading it carefully.

I must say this pattern is one of the WORST written I have EVER come across, but if you slow down......take a breath.......read and read and re-read the read and read.......it comes together.

I finally walked away and had a bowl of ice cream......came back and just read the pattern over and over (after I got past row 13).

I promised myself this pattern is not going to get the best of me.

I thought I'd pop in just to let you know I'm still working on the ruffles! I don't think theres and end in sight to these things, but I keep at them anyway, in between everything else! I guess I also missed my window to lengthen it since others have said it turns out shorter on them.

If anyone has a suggestion for making the body longer, i'm all ears!!!:think

Seriously poorly written...and I have reread and reread and reread and reread...as far as errors...I guess that's debatable...but since I had to make adjustments simply for my body type, it doesn't matter in the end...however, if I have to reread the same row 10 times to get the gist of what the designer is trying to get across, that's a problem and I'm counting it as an error.

I have to agree (again!) how poorly written this pattern is. I've been crocheting for nearly 30 years, and i don't think I've EVER had this many problems with a pattern. As for mistakes, I thought I'd found quite a few, but on reading again (for probably the millionth time) I think you may be right, they're not necessarily mistakes, they just look that way because the pattern is written so badly. Once you get the gist of the pattern, and complete one, it turns out that it's really a simple pattern and design, but still, because of the way its written, it is definatly an intermediate project, and I wouldn't suggest it to a newbie crocheter unless they have someone close by to give them hands-on help. I've completed my first one (will get pics as soon as i can and post them), and I've started another one. I liked the pics of karen's and donna's without the sleeves, so on my second one, i'm leaving those off. Then I saw ferret's without the ruffle too, and I liked that a lot too, so i'm leaving off the ruffle on this one also, and just making it a vest. maybe Caron will pick up on this thread, and re-write the pattern for future makers of this wonderful sweater. It really is a lovely piece, and I think it should be written so anybody can make one without all the problems we've had.

I had the same problem. I tried it on a few rows after making the arm holes, and it was just too short. I think you're right about the model being small, and wearing a large. I had to add probably 8 or 9 extra rows to the bottom to get it the right length. On the one I'm working on now, I'm about 80% off pattern, and just working it and trying it on as I go. I used the pattern to get it started, then just went on off, on my own.

Well, lucky me having so many WIPs that I haven't actually started this one yet (beyond buying enough yarn in no less than THREE different shades) but now I'm seeing what to look for as far as problems go...

Before I joined the Village I actually never made what I would call 'complex' or advanced skill wearables because I was intimdated at the concept of shaping and size, etc... didn't think I could do it:think ... but now I feel much more confident and realize I CAN read a pattern, and some are very poorly written... some are not meant to be read at all except by the writer and their very close friends:angry . I honestly don't feel for me that any shaped pattern could be labled as beginner!

I haven't actually sat down and read this pattern yet but love the finished item so I really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences so I'll know what to watch for. I am currently working on a tunic for my daughter and I had to really read exactly what the pattern was saying without making assumptions (liking turning stitch counts as first stich - not this time!) and it's working!

I am one sleeve away from being done...I added several rows to make it look on me what it looks like on the model (in terms of where it hit her hips...) and the same with the sleeve...I added more rows to the ruffles to make them look fuller. I am using DMC #3 crochet cotton thread in pink...so far it's turning out great...but yeah, have to make adjustments...and for me, it's normal for me to make these kinds of adjustments because while I'm not Jubba the Hut, I am most definately larger than what the original pattern called for...I was very excited when I got the one sleeve done and put it on and it hit exactly where I wanted the sleeve to hit...

Had I followed the pattern exactly, it would not have fit at all...definately would have been too small...all around...

Hey everyone...

When adding rows on the bottom, doesn't that change the pattern when you get to the ruffles??? If so, does anyone know if there needs to be an even or odd number added??? I would like mine just a hair longer as well.

Just curious what those who have completed this jacket have found...

eurolyons
October 9th, 2006, 10:42 AM
I just kept adding rows before I did the ruffles...during the body of the jacket, you don't add any more stitches per se (unless you've added more than the pattern called for like I did past the large size) so for the bottom of the ruffle part, that's gonna be fine...and then when you get to the side of the ruffles (for the front, what I did was put v stitches in each of the corners (I think I did five, that looked better) then up the front until the side started to decrease I did a v stitch, sk next stitch and then a v stitch, and then from the point of decrease for the neckline, v stitch and then skip 2 stitches, and then a v stitch and so on...I hope that made sense...I played with it and frogged a time or two until I got the look I was going for with the ruffles...from that point on, I basically put the written pattern aside...I added more rows to the ruffle to make them fuller and to get the length I wanted down to my hips...I think about 3 more rows...worked for me...

Thanks!
That is about what I am looking for as well... I am making the large, and I am not doing extra stitches... I actually started making it bigger, but I found it was too much... I do tend to crochet a little looser than most.
