Anyone interested in a CAL for this sweater (http://cache.lionbrand.com/patterns/60216.html)? I know there are a few already working on it!
kmarcene started this thread (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=33667) over in Clothing show-and-tell that she was interested in making this sweater. Several villagers expressed interest, some said they were already working on it, and several suggested it become a CAL. I contacted kmarcene (didn't want to step on her toes :blush ) and asked if she wanted to set up a CAL or would she mind/like me to do it. She asked me to go ahead and post it over here and she would join us when she could...
So, thank you to kmarcene for the inspiration, and here we go... anyone want to join us?
Finished!

Thanks for starting this thread flyinghooks! ;) Obviously I am in. I got my yarn yesterday in the mail and made 3 A motifs last night. They work up well. I checked my gauge and everything seems to be going fine. I am so excited. The motifs work up fast. I did those three in probably an hour, and they should get faster the more that I do. :clap
I think that I am going to follow the pattern and not join as I go and wait to join until things are all finished. I am going to Hawaii for 15 days to visit my family that lives there and attend my cousins wedding, so it should be a great project to work on while I am there because the pieces are small. I will be online though to update and see how everyone is doing. This is my first CAL, I am so excited.

Oh man! Let me pick my jaw up off the floor. I LOVE it! I'm working on the Victoria Secret skirt, but I'm going to have to start this one next! (I'm almost done with the skirt)
That sweater is beautiful!:manyheart
And, wow, I can't believe I'm getting in a crochet along right at the beginning. :D

Count me in! I fell in love with this sweater when I first saw the posting on the Lion Brand website. I just need to get the yarn and then I can get started on it. Tonight after work I'm going to go by Michael's and see if they have it in stock yet. If not, I have some other yarn that I need to order, so I'll include this in my order.

OH, that IS pretty. I've never made a wearable, but if I didn't have so many WIPs for Xmas, I would be sorely tempted....have to keep this in mind....

When someone here gets done, or close to it, I would really love to know how much yarn you have left on skein #2 when completing one of these. I wanted to possibly use substitute yarn when I *eventually* get around to this (oh no, the list grows larger lol). I can just imagine them calling for 2 of these huge skeins, but only needing a tiny portion off the 2nd one! Considering a med. takes 3, maybe not, but I'd at least like a ballpark idea on the actual-used yardage. :)

Actually in the yarn specified, S, M & L all take 2 skeins; 1X, 2X and 3X all take 3 skeins. This is because S, M, & L all call for 24 motif A and 4 motif B and vary in how many rows you put in the side gussets and how many rows you crochet at the shoulders. So, for the small I'm sure you'll have a bit of the 2nd skein left over.
I'm not using the specified yarn, but I should still be able to give you an yardage estimate as we go along.

I am really intimidated by this pattern, but would like to join. Maybe knowing I have Friends who can walk me through it or explain things I don't get will help. I have never made a wearable with sleeves, tried a couple with some problems, so I am sure I'll need the support. I'll hit the LYS tomorrow to get yarn! This is also my first CAL, I'm excited!:cheer

Alright, quick question. When trying to substitute, should I look for matching yardage or matching ounces. Yardage makes more sense to me but...I guess this pattern called for 960 yards of yarn. I was going to make it out of Chenille Thick and Quick but each of those skeins only has 100 yards. Does that mean I will need 10 skeins to finish this project? Or am I just thinking about this all wrong?

Hi Bianka - Glad you could join us! If you're substituting with another superbulky or bulky yarn then yes you need the same yardage. You'll want to make sure you can get gauge with the yarn you choose.
I'm using double strand of a thinner yarn and therefore need twice the yardage! Does this make sense?
Also make sure you save your receipt, because the S, M and L sizes all call for 2 skeins of Romance, so depending on which size you're doing you may have leftover yarn.

There was a question on the old thread about assembly...
has anyone tried this sweater yet? I'm trying it right now, and i'm just not sure how to join the "granny squares" it says to sew them together, but i'm just not sure if you sew around the chain 4 space, or catch one of the chains. does this make any sense? if anyone has tried this, then it will likely make sense to you
Supafreak - glad to have you with us.
To join these motifs. I think you can do either method that you said. Since it is an even # of chains I would probably sew 2 ch-4 loops together between the 2nd and 3rd chain. Or you could choose to sew them together through both the 2nd and 3rd chains. I think to go through only one chain might look lopsided.
I actually decided to do the join as you go method so when making those chain 4 loops I slip stitch to another motif's ch 4 loop (ch 2, sl st to other motif, ch2).
You can see joined squares at my blog (http://flyinghooks.blogspot.com/2006/09/floral-fantasy-pullover.html) if you want to take a peek.
How's everyone else doing?

:embar I'm not "doing" yet...I was so excited to join this thread, but I'm bound & determined to finish the Victorias Secret skirt in the other CAL I'm in...I'm going to have it finished this weekend. I'm only 9 rows from the end but they're a little labor intensive, if you ask me.:sweat
I also have a shawl I've been working on, on my own, since last spring. I slacked during the summer, and I'm thinking I should hurry up and finish it because the weather these days has been PERFECT for my shawl (which is still too small to wear).
So, I'm kinda thinking I should finish those two and start this one next.... :(
I'll keep watching, though. Maybe you all can iron out any questions or mistakes before I jump in on it. I like the idea of joining as you go. I prefer that method and it makes more sense to me. :)

Well shoot. I may as well go ahead and get the yarn it calls for. If I did what I had planned, it would be like $70. Hmph, I wish I would pay $70 for a sweater I had to turn around and make myself. Gonna order the yarn tonight being as I can't seem to find it. Should be here in a few days. Hopefully that gives me a little time to get some of my other WIPs going.

can someone explain in detail the join as you go method? how many motifs do you make first before you begin to "join as you go?" It seems to me that you will eventually end up with a shape that is not four sided, like an L shape, or a + shape. How do you go about "joining as you go" when you have a shape like this?

I'll do my best to try.
Make motif #1. All sides are the same, but for ease of discussion of the assembly let's call the top (T), the right (R), the bottom (B) and the left (L).
Make your 2nd motif through round 2. Now begin round 3. sl st in to ch-4 sp, ch 3, dc2tog, ch2, sl st to center of ch-4 sp in the top left corner of motif #1, ch2, dc3tog, (ch2, sl st to next ch-4 sp on motif #1 top (1T), ch 2, sc in next ch-4 sp) 3 times, ch2, sl st to next ch-4 sp on motif #1 top (1T), ch 2, dc3tog, ch2, sl st to center of ch-4 sp at the top right corner of motif #1, ch2, dc3tog...
at this point you have joined th top of motif #1 (1T) with the bottom of motif # 2 (2B).
Finish round 3 of motif #2 as written.
Then make your 3rd motif and join its bottom (3B) to the top of #2 (2T).
Then make your 4th motif and join its right side (4R) to #1's left side (1L).
Then make your 5th motif and join its bottom (5B) to top of 4 (4T) and join 5R to 2L.
The make your 6th motif and join 6B to 5T and 6R to 3L.
For the sizes S, M & L you would now have a front panel.
Does this make any sense to you?

romance is soooo expensive. It was 20 a ball at the yarn shop downtowa, and my size called for two balls. I'm using the patons divine, and it's working nicely, and at only $5 a ball, the price is right. I'll probobly need about 4 balls

I have a question for you more-experienced-crocheters...
I was looking at the picture of the sweater, and I was trying to decide what size to make. Generally, I wear a small on top. The problem is, I don't have a small "backside". :lol
I noticed the measurements for the small were for a 34 inch chest measurement...but what about my hips? If you look at the diagram it says 17, which totals 34 when doubled.
So, without having a measuring tape here at work, I used a flat ruler. If I measured right, my hips are 36. I started thinking. This might be something that needs to be considered if my hips are more than 34, I might need to make a medium, won't I? Or does it stretch? Do I want it to stretch?
I don't have alot of experience making wearables, and I thought if I was wondering about this, someone else might need to think about it, too...so I thought I'd post it.
Am I thinking about this the right way? It doesn't look like it goes TOO far down the hips, but...maybe...I need a measuring tape. :lol

OK, you crack me up with the flat ruler. :lol
First I don't think this goes too far down the hips, but it depends how tall you are.
Second, the yarn will prbably stretch enough to accommodate an inch if tha's all we're talking.
Third, this pattern is really flexible since the smallest 3 sizes use the same # of motifs the difference is just how many rows you put in the side gussets and at the top for the shoulder.. If when assembling, you feel it needs to be wider at the hips you can make the entire side gusset the width for the medium or we can be creative and figure out a way to widen the gusset only at the bottom .
I'm in the same boat, just upside down and bigger :lol - the concern is I'm tall with broad shoulders, so I'm making the medium but considering the shoulders of the large .
We'll figure it out!

I started this sweater over the weekend, and made 3 1/2motifs. I'm trying the "join as you go" method, but having some trouble when I'm joining a motif on two sides. I mean that when I get to the intersection of 4 motifs, it starts to look odd right at that center part. Where 4 motifs come together, as I'm joining the fourth one, and I've just finished the first side, I get to the intersection of 4 motifs and I'm not sure how to proceed on that corner join. I don't join the corner to all 3 existing motifs, do I? I've tried a few variations on the corner and it always looks funny. I've never done any join as you go before, so I'm kind of stuck!

OK - I'll have to try another 4 motif join to check myself, but this is what I think I did:
You have 4 squares, you joined #2 to #1 and then #3 to an adjacent side of #2 so the 4th square is going to complete the larger square. At the corner that is the intersection of all 4 motifs, when making #2 I joined that corner to corner on motif #1. When making #3 I joined it's corner to corner of motif #2. When making #4 I actually join its corner twice, to corner of #3 and corner of #1 (#4's next-door neighbors) I do not join the corner of motif #4 to the corner of motif #2 (diagonal neighbor).
Make any sense?

Well, I guess I'll have to count me in on this too as I bought 6 balls of the coral Patons Divine for this sweater. I was in Michael's getting yarn for something else, and there was that lovely yarn - and in the coral that everyone always complements me on when I wear that color. So what else could I do but buy it? I made one motif with the suggested hook and my gauge is good. But I have the same "backside" problem - smaller on top than bottom. Think I'll do the size small, but do the bottom half of the side gussets in the size medium if I need to....;)
Have to finish that shawl for my mom, that Short N Sweet bolero to take on vacation next month, line a few bags, and finish D2, D3 and D4 from the Victorias Secret CAL, but who could resist such a quick and pretty project? :yes

I tried to use the Patons Divine again last night....I finished row 2 of the first motif and this thing looks like a hairy baby-blue spider. It's puffy, fuzzy...I just don't think it's supposed to look like that....
It doesn't lay flat at all and I see so much more definition in the picture, than I see in my motif...I can't even tell where the corners are, the petals don't lay flat...
Is anyone else having this same problem with the Divine? I'm taking it back today, I think. I'll try something else. Maybe two strands of something held together, instead. Maybe with a novelty yarn thrown in...I'll have to see what I can find. I'm just really disappointed in this yarn. :no
Am I doing something wrong??

I can't speak directly to the yarn. I'm using 2 strands of Sirdar Salsa DK.
But, I can tell you that mine is a pink fluffy spider until I join the motifs. With each round the motif has a little more definittion but only whenjoined together or laid out as if to block does the pattern definition appear.

Maybe try double strand? I'm using 2 strands of very fuzzy DK yarn, a 7mm hook and the squares are about 7.25" instead of 7.5 inches. I figure I'll follow the large (instead of medium) side gusset & shoulder instructions to make up the difference - following the schematics.
Did you try a motif with double strand?

I realized last night I have some beautiful yellow boucle at home that I could use, too, and that's the right weight....
Maybe I'll try that. (boy, I'm getting behind on this CAL) :(
You're never behind!! People can join us any time!!
I understand about the expense of doubling the yarn. I was lucky I had 12 skeins in my stash of this yarn that I bought on clearance for $1.00/skein

I'm going very slowly on this project - hardly any time to crochet, so I just finished my first panel of 6 motifs, and I see frogging in my future!
My problem is the join as you go method. The first time I joined a motif on two sides, I struggled with it many different ways, and tried following Ginny's instructions, but it came out strange. So I invented my own way, then put it down for a few days and forgot how I did it!
Now I just joined another motif on two sides, and used Ginny's method. It looks perfect! Much better than my invention. So I guess I will frog the joining rounds of a few motifs so it will all be the same. I'm learning a lot with this project, but slowly.
Not sure where I went wrong before, why it didn't work... But it could have been the distracting influence of kids and husband, while today I have the day off, on my own at home.

Ginny, I have a possibly silly question about the join as you go method. In your instructions, sometimes you slip stitch, and sometimes you sc into the ch 4 space. But I'm not sure why?

Ginny, I have a possibly silly question about the join as you go method. In your instructions, sometimes you slip stitch, and sometimes you sc into the ch 4 space. But I'm not sure why?
The easiest answer is that I sc to the motif I'm actually still crocheting and I sl st to the previously completed motif to which I am joining.
Why I do this is a little harder to explain. Assuming we're working on motif 2 and joining it to the previously completed motif 1. If we were working with an odd number of chains in the loops - like a chain 5 loop, I would *sc in ch-5 loop of motif 2, ch2, sc in ch-5 loop of motif 1, ch2, * and repeat * to *, In this case the sc, in effect replaces one of the chains of the ch-5 loop.
When we have a loop that is an even number like this pattern's ch-4 loop, I prefer to use a sl st to join and still keep ch2 on either side of the sl st. I pull the sl st kind of tightly - I think it's a smaller stitch than a sc and doesn't change the ch-4 loop into a ch-5 loop. I think if I used a sc when I joined, and did *sc in ch-4 loop of motif 2, ch2, sc in ch-4 loop of motif 1, ch2, * and repeat, that motif 2 would in effect have a ch-5 loop.
Does this make sense?
I'm just anal about trying to keep things looking even.
I'm glad it worked out for you the 2nd time. And yes it's much easier to join without distractions! Good Luck!

How's everyone doing? I'll have to take some more pictures, but I've finished the front & back panels complete with side gussets. I even put them together so it looks like a vest (I know I shouldn't have - I usually prefer to do the sides seams from arn all the way to the bottom edge at once - oh well). I've also have two sets of 4 squares assembled for the arms. I need to decide whether to make motifs A or B to finish the sleeves...:think they're pretty big as is with the underarm gussets. I may be modifying these too - I can never leave a pattern alone!
Back to hooking!

I only have 2 done so far, using the join as you go method. But I'm loving the look of the coral Divine yarn! :manyheart The DH and I are leaving for Honolulu on the 26th, so I'm planning on taking it with me. 5 hours there, and 5 back - I should be able to get some crocheting done! ;)

I've been sidetracked by a combination of 2 things. I've been working on some gifts for a baby that will be born very soon. I'm finishing up the baby's abcs blanket - http://www.crochetnmore.com/babysabcsafghan.htm
time consuming and fairly mindless crochet.
And the second delay is that it always takes me a while to recover from frogging! Once I figured out how to do the "join as you go" properly, I had to frog back the joining rounds of 5 of my six squares. I can't seem to jump right back into it after frogging. Thank you, Ginny, for your good explanations that clarified the join as you go. The use of slip stitch vs. single crochet does make sense.

I'm really wondering about the collar. On the LB photo, it seems to lie flat, as though the motifs at the back of the neck were not sewn together. If the four motifs are sewn together into a tube, wouldn't the collar stand up a lot more?

I agree. I have the same concerns. Especially since there's no difference to the collar between the S-M-L sizes and the shoulder shaping is larger. I've made the collar, but did NOT join the 4th motif back to the first one right away. I plan to attach it with the opening in the back center, then pin it together with stitch markers, if it doesn't lie flat, then I'll be creating yet another gusset creation!

sounds great - hope to see some progress photos!

i would love to make this sweater! my MIL just sent me about 15 skeins of a mohair wool blend in blue and bluegreen colors and i had NO idea what to make with it until i seen this sweater! I am scared though because I am very new to crocheting and it says experienced! Is it possible for a beginner to make this??

I think so - especially with a CAL to help you along! :clap The motifs themselves are pretty straight forward. Read through the posts about joining them as you go. If you can do that I think you'll be in great shape!

I finished the last motif (join-as-you-go style) last night! :clap :cheer :clap
LOOK LOOK LOOK!! (http://flyinghooks.blogspot.com/2006/10/wip-explosion.html)
Now I have to work on the underarm gussets and attach sleeves and still figure out the neck.
In case you're wondering...earlier when I had finished the front & back panels and their side gussets, I was so excited to join then (as-you-go, of course) I did just that without thinking that I really prefer to join from sleeve/wrist to sweater bottom/waist in one motion - oh well - I'll make it work.
How's everyone else doing?

My yarn is Sirdar Salsa DK - using 2 strands.

I'm still here... I got majorly sidetracked and haven't touched it in a week. I need to sit down at home and assemble the sleeves and do the side gussets - it's no longer the "at the soccer game" kind of crochet project. Maybe tomorrow night I'll get back to it.

Hi - Glad to have you join us.. someone finished a version... I'll have to go hunt up the show-n-tell threads and link them to the first post. I actually re-started assembling mine after putting it down in favor of other wips. I hope to have it done tonight...if I can find the hook I lost last night!! I'm still not sure about the collar... more later!

OK I've decided, with my yarn (double stranded Sirdar Salsa DK) that the scalloped edging will NOT work. :thumbdown The 5 dc scallops are way too stiff and make the sleeves really "bell" and the bottom edge of the sweater sticks out like it has crinoline under it. Time to :frog !!! just the edgings that is... of course I need to decide on an alternate edging ... maybe just some sc on the ch-4 loops to add a bit of weight to the edges:scrachin
I've also decided I just don't like the way the collar lies on me. I might just leave it off....:think My dd has already decided it's a perfect scarf or her!
So close and yet so far... :thair
Is anyone else this far along?

I finally finished my sweater - albeit with a bunch of modifications! This blog post (http://flyinghooks.blogspot.com/2006/12/fo-floral-fantasy-pullover.html) has a bunch of details (including photo), but basically I nixed the flared sleeves, changed the edging to a simple sc instead of 5dc scallop, and took off the collar.
So what do you guys think?
Any one else making some progress on this sweater?

If anyone happens to come along this thread, since its been about a year, I have a question on the underarm shaping... The pattern says to start at the bottom right of the sleeve rectangle, does this mean the rectangle made of the 4 A squares, not adding an edge to the 2 B squares at the end of the sleeve? Or do I start at the very bottom of the sleeve which would be at the B squares that create the bell? Thanks!

after attaching all the oullover and the squares there is edgeing for the neck shape, end of sleeves and end of the pullover

November 24th, 2007, 04:25 PM
Maybe I wasn't clear, my question isn't on the edging but on the underarm gussets. To me it seems that I wouldn't include the 2 B squares in the sleeve rectangle, but basically that is my question. Thanks!

I don't have an answer to your question, I just wanted to "bump" this up to see if anyone wants to pick it up? I've finished my flannel-ghans and am ready to start on "me" patterns. I'm working on the Bernat Hoodie but want to work on this one a bit as well. I don't know how much time I'll have to dedicate, though, since school also starts up again on the 7th. Yikes!! :)
