View Full Version : Star Blanket...a bit bigger than for baby

I'm about 12 rows into a star blanket:
http://www.angelfire.com/va3/heartfeltangels/littlestarafghan.html
I love the look of this, but instead of keeping it tiny, I am going to keep going to the size of an adult throw. This will be for my Grandma who is 83 and LOVES bright colors. I am using Caron Simply Soft Brites in Mango, Watermelon, Blue Mint, and Iris. I'm pretty sure she'll be thrilled.
Anyone want to crochet along? :cheer

I actually wanted to make this for my cousin who is having a baby, so I might just keep mine on the small side. I think it's a few more weeks before she finds out if it's a boy or a girl though, and they really want to do the pink or blue thing so I might have to hold off for a little while. If the CAL is still going in a few weeks, count me in.

Count me in! (As if I need another project) I made one of these last year for my niece in super blinding yellew with fun fur trim. I wish I had a picture of it. Anyways I've been wanting to make a giant one for myself. Time to go spend an hour at AC Moore picking out colors!:c9

Someday, I'm going to make one for myself.
And something for you guys making these stars bigger- What I did to make it go faster was that I used Lion Brand Homespun. It turned out the size I wanted in half the rows, and was softer than anything else I've done.
If this is still going on in a few weeks, when I've got more money and the other baby blankets done (or close), I'll pick my colors and start working on a star for myself.

I'm using Caron Simply Soft this time since my grandma loves bright colors, but thanks for the Homespun tip as I will do that next when I make one for myself. :)

I'm in on this one! I stumbled across this forum a few days ago and it has totally revived my desire to crochet. 4 kids (2 of whom are under the age of 3) volunteering, teaching one day a week, housework, errands, laundry, etc (you get it, I'm sure)...keep me pretty busy, so busy that I've given up crochet for the last year or so and I REALLY REALLY miss it. :(
I decided last night to make 6 of these circle/star ghans, one for each member of the family, for Christmas. That way everyone will know which throw is theirs if we are watching TV at night or something. ;) Obviously, all of mine will be in varying sizes, and I can't wait to pick out everyone's colors from my yarn stash!
Any suggestions on how big to go based on height of the person, or age? I want it to be big enough to be a good throw, but not so big that it is overpowering and heavy.
I'm ready to crochet again! :clap

OK. This will be my first CAL. Yes, I think I am signing up for this. I have bought several skeins of Caron Simply Soft to make two of these, one as a shower :rain gift for a friend and one for my little nephew. I am going to start today, because I am just so excited about the pattern and the colors :yay; but I know it is going to take awhile to complete as I am in the process of making 30 bunny :rabbit pins for teacher appreciation (we are the Jackrabbits) and I have to do a least one daisy square to send to Krystal (though I want to make an entire blanket from her granny square patterbn as well). Actually I just want to crochet one of everything!!! But alas, I simply do not have enough time!!! :no Perhaps if i gave up housework all together?:yes

I'm also going to use caron simply soft. I ordered a bunch of grey heather and sage from knittingwarehouse.com and am very impatiently waiting for it.

Oh....I think I'm gonna love this group and CAL!!! Housework is DEFINITELY overrated! :yes I guess I could let mopping the floor and scrubbing the toilets slide a bit in order to crochet more! Of course, there is still that mommy thing that takes up so much of my time, but I enjoy that much more than housework. :)
OK - I love the colors you have started with SeaShelley...nice and vibrant and bright. Looks like you are using very tiny sport wt yarn. Since my goal is to make one for each family member, I think I am going to make mine in all different sizes with all different weights and types of yarn. I want them to fit the individual.
I did accomplish something today! I put the babies down for naps and then went and raided my yarn stash! I just LOVE doing that...sitting on the closet floor and pulling out colors and different textures of yarn. I am the WORST at combining colors...so it usually takes me a while of just staring at skeins of yarn and arranging them next to each other on the floor and then rearranging and rearranging until I at least have an inkling of an idea of what I want to do. I made a firm decision on 2 of them, the one for my middle son and my husband will be in school colors. They are both avid sports nuts and will love that. Of course, that means I will have to actually go buy shopping since I don't have enough of certain colors stashed away! I don't about the rest of you, but I NEVER leave the store with just the yarn I came in for...as my DH says, when I shop for yarn, it becomes an adventure both for me and our checkbook! :devil
Update at a later date...keep on crocheting ladies!

SeaShelly, I love your colors! I wish I could buy that simply soft here in Holland. I only have bright pure cotton yarn, but that is too heavy for such a big blanket.

and after fiddeling around with stitch placement (being new to crochet-I was having a bit of a time detriming where the join was placed; and after the shell, was having difficulty determining where the next dc was to go-shell was covering up the next stitch) I now have 4 rows completed!!!

I don't *need* to do one of these. I have a pile of other projects started (gifts, *and* an afghan I started for my son *last year* and haven't finished :embar ) and I know common sense would say not to start one of these star 'ghans... But I've wanted to do one of these for sooo long now.
Hmph!

I absolutely can't afford to buy any yarn right now, though, so this is gonna end up being an odds'n'ends 'ghan, and the colour scheme may be pathetic when I'm done, because I don't know what I have on hand. But I can call this a learning experience, right? :lol

Count me in! This was already on my WIM list as a Christmas gift for my sister. She's 13 and loves pink and leopard print so, I am planning to use Simply Soft in Watermelon and then a lighter pink and white. I'm also thinking about edging it with Patons Bohemian Artistic Taupes to get the leopard print look and add some texture to it.
My wonderful Fall Purse Swap partner gave me a Michael's gift card so I'm going to use some of that to buy the yarn for this and I'm hoping to make it by the store tonight.

I got my yarn from Michael's last night -- Caron SS Brites in Watermelon, Caron SS in Light Pink and Caron SS in White. I'm not quite sure how many rows of different colors I'm going to do. But I know that I want the majority of it to be the watermelon, and I'm going to follow this order for the colors:
Watermelon
Light Pink -- a thin stripe, maybe 3 rows
White -- thinner stipe, maybe just 1 row
Light Pink -- same as second section, 3 rows
Watermelon
I'll probably repeat this twice. Then I'm going to edge it in the Patons Bohemian Artistic Taupes for some texture.
I started last night and finished 5 rows. It seems really easy and I think I'm going to enjoy making this.
How is everyone else doing?

Wow, it sounds like everyone is off to a great start! I finally sat down and chose my colors and yarn for my youngest. Remember my goal is to make one throw size for each family member before Christmas. I figured if I start with the smallest, they will go faster AND if someone's doesn't get finished in time it will be mine (yeah, I robbed the cradle, 7 months older than DH).
Anyway, my youngest is a boy, 21 months old. I decided to use TLC Wiggles yarn. Not sure how this will work up, but it looks so exciting and festive and bright. I chose navy, grape, blue, green, yellow, orange, red, and cherry...kinda went for that rainbow look. Now, I am trying to decide if I want to start at the navy end or the cherry end.
Off to crochet! Babies are in bed and I finally have some "me" time!

glinster,
I can relate, sort of. I was getting really tired the other night, but kept thinking, "just one more row, one more." I persisted and ended up making a mistake, so I had to frog three rows, and they were not small ones 21-23. I put the blanket aside and worked on Krystals Daisy Square yesterday-very challenging, but really cool. I will have to work on the blanket today and throughout the weekend as I need to have it finished very soon (not sure when the shower is, probably need to find that out).

I was able to work on mine for a couple of hours yesterday and have 13 rounds done. I've decided that I'm going to do 15 rounds of the Watermelon, then 3 light pink, 1 white, 3 light pink. I'll do 2 repeats of this and then see how big it is to decide how many rows of watermelon to end with.
I'm really enjoying this pattern -- it's simple enough to be able to watch television or have a conversation without messing up, but still varied enough that I'm not getting bored with it.
How is everyone else coming along? Can't wait to see some pictures. I'll post one after I get a few more rounds done and have some of the other colors included.

Okay, I'm in! Too many WIP's but have been drooling over this for the last two weeks. I'm going to do smaller ones for premies at our local hospital, white with pink or blue trim in a sparkle yarn as a narrow border. May also try to do a small cap to match. If I do a few small stars, maybe they could be given to those parents that aren't able to bring their baby home, using the star as a keepsake.
Worked on premie caps last night from 10pm to 4am. I was on a roll and had no idea what time it was. Off to find a good sized hook!

Needle arts,
what a lovely idea to make small stars for preemies. Maybe I'll start with a small one too.
My son was born premature (he's now 16 months) and last year I made a doll with his birth-size and -weight (so I can show him one day how tiny he was at birth, and for myself to remember). It would be nice to have a blanket for that doll!

About the star blanket, I am now on row 16 (I had to put it aside for a few days to do some other projects) -- It's not as perfect looking as I would like, but I know my Grandmother will love it anyway. I've bought material to make a color coordinated small pillow, and also a matching drawstring bag to hold both the completed blanket and the pillow. I will present it to her as a "nap-sack" :)

Boy, this works up fast, doesn't it? I have a good bit done just from stitching tonight while watching K. Branagh's "Hamlet" with my son (tape #1 -- will watch tape #2 tomorrow) and I was so pleased at at quickly it seemed to go. Such a simple pattern, too! I like that when doing it while watching tv...
Since I'm using up odds and ends of yarn, my colour scheme is kinda unusual, to say the least, but that's ok. I'll definitely make another of these one day using new yarn in colours I've chosen, not just whatever I had on hand. I dug up several skeins of Simply Soft that hadn't been used all that much, and am combining those with almost-three-full skeins of Wool Ease. Once I use these up, it's done, whatever size that comes to. May end up being a toddler or youngster size when done instead of a lapghan, like I'd wanted, but that's ok, too. I'll just have to see if I can find someone with a youngster who might like to have it. <g>
This is a fun and quick project -- so glad you started this CAL, because who knows how long I'd have wanted to make one of these and never started, if not for this? Thanks!

Ok, I've been tossing it around for a week now, I am going to have to join this CAL (my first!). I have been wanting to make a throw for my 2 year old. I have an afghan that I started years ago and never finished (ugh, no good reason), this would be a good use for all that yarn I have stashed away for that. (and may the other project finally rest in peace) Now, where did I put thing . . .

SeaShelly,
Mine turned out very "crooked"! :sigh All my points angle to the right. :sstar After making one of CrochetDude's flip flop coasters I think I figured out my problem; I crochet too tight!!!:think My first flip flop was puckered, so I tried crocheting, what I feel is really loosely, and it layed flat! :yay This blanket is finished, but I want to make another; as so many have pointed out it is just a fun project too see develop, especially since I did the varying row count. I think it will work out a bit better, even though I am satisfied with the one I have completed already.:yes

Those flip-flop wine glass coasters?? I LOVE that pattern and can't wait to try it!! :)
Thanks for the tip...I think I must crochet tighter than I realize, too.

I know I didn't join this at the beginning, but I am also making one of these-in Simply Soft-three colors of blue & white for a baby gift-but it is definitely bigger than the pattern. Does that count??? I am about 3/4 of the way done so far.

I think I crochet very loosely, and all my points are turning to the left :think
I even left out 1 dc before each shell, but that doesn't help enough. Maybe next time I'll turn the star after each round, instead of crocheting around in the same direction :hook

Sea Shelley,
I am loving your color choices! It's looking great. I think that is one thing that appeals to me so much about textile crafts...how very different, beautiful, and unique the final projects turn out to be even when made from the same pattern.
I know, no one has heard from me in awhile. I was the over-achiever who planned to make 6 of these, one for each member of the family. I still plan to do that and have chosen colors for everyone...but not sure if it is going to be done by Christmas...:think The "mommy/wife/homemaker" thing keeps taking precedence over crocheting during the day :lol . Plus, the several other projects that I have going on at the same time. Does anyone else do that; work on 3 or 4 things at once? I've started my daughter's though...after being raised with all brothers and having 3 sons...I am jumping at the chance to make pink things! :yay
When I can figure out how to post pictures, I will show you my progress.

That looks great, Shelley! I really like the colors that you're using.
I haven't made any more progress on mine since the last time I posted a pic because I spent the entire weekend working on my Prairie Star for the Crochet-a-Quilt CAL. I always have lots of different projects going at once. I just need to find a way to evenly distribute my crocheting time among them so that one doesn't get neglected. Especially since three of the ones I have going right now are Christmas presents. :eek I think I might assign each day of the week to a particular project, that should even the time out.

Help! I have about 10 rows done, and it is not turning to the left or right, but is it sort of puckery (sorry, haven't figured out how to do photos yet). I've double checked my stitch count and placement and that looks ok. Is it too tight, did I use too small of a hook? :shrug AGHH. I assume this will not work itself out if I continue. Any suggestions?

Glinster,
I wonder if turning the star would work. I know when knitting, if you knit in the same pattern in the same direction it actually is kinda warpped (biased), I found a star dishcloth pattern that indicates turning after each round. This may be worth a try. I do know that knitting looser seemed to correct my problem on the flip flop (I love those things, they are addictive, and fun, and great gifts in sets of 4-8; Drew is AWESOME!!!), but you said you crochet loosley and it angled to the left. Hmmm... I am going to try the row turning on the next one, just to see what happens.

knitcrochetandpray,
I have decided I am finished with my star (no not really)
But I can't get it to lay flat. So I decided to stop and fasten off, I'll wash it tomorrow and see if I can get it flat. If necessary, I wil beat it VERY hard until it stays flat :yes
I hope it will make a difference. If it works, I'll go on working on it. If not, I will start a new one and try to reverse the rounds.
I'll let you know if the washing and blocking worked :sigh

I'm ready to start mine. For those of you making a larger adult-sized one, how many rows do you expect to make? And do you think it would be too much if I doubled the thread on one of these? I found a great "blended rainbow" pattern on a regular afghan and the colors are so neat - first row is purple, second is blue and purple held togther, next is blue, next is blue and green together and so-on. VERY pretty. I was thinking of doing this pattern that way but do you think it'd be too much for two strands together on the star pattern?
Thanks!
PoisonApple
October 16th, 2006, 02:32 PM
LOL..I don't know how many rows...I plan to go until I use up all the yarn I bought for it. I got 20 rows out of the first two skiens of Simply Soft so I figure 20 more (maybe a bit less because the rows are bigger>. for an adult size...maybe 50? So six skins, if you bought SS.:hook :cheer
As for holding two strands together, I don't really think that would be a problem..it is a really simple pattern with really uncomplacated stitches.
Bookchick29
October 16th, 2006, 03:16 PM
Amalapert - If I continue mine according the plan that I have in mind right now, it will be 55 rows. Here is the schema I've put together for mine (starting from the center):
SS Watermelon - 15 rows
SS Light Pink - 3 rows
SS White - 1 row
SS Light Pink - 3 rows
SS Watermelon - 15 rows
SS Light Pink - 1 row
SS White - 1 row
SS Light Pink - 1 row
SS Watermelon - 15 rows
I think it would work nicely with two strands held together, however depending on your yarn weight, you might want to go up a hook size. The colors you describe sound beautiful and I think would be very nice in this pattern. Can't wait to see pictures.

OK, I guess I asked the wrong question. Because I'm doing a double strand and using Red Heart, I went up to size N hook. This makes it a lot larger than what you guys are doing. Sooooo....I guess what I SHOULD have asked the ones doing adult sized ones is...what finished size are you shooting for? I've done 5 rows and have a 10 inch diameter. I'm doing 11 colors in all but I can make 5 of them much smaller rows and still get a cool effect. But I don't know how big to make this since I'm using a bigger hook and haven't ever done a round pattern before. So I'm all cornfused. LOL
http://webpages.charter.net/laurie/crochet/round%20star.JPG
ALso, can someone explain how I end and start one strand at the same time while keeping the other strand going? Or should I finish off each section (that's what the original rectangle shaped one suggests)? And if you think so, what would be the best way to finish it off?
Thanks!
Laurie
UPDATE:
I think I'm gonna shoot for a 60" round. So that means if my rows are about 2" diameter each, I think I'll do 4 rows for each of the 6 solid colors. That will be 48". In between them, I will do 2 rows of the blended colors for 5 colors, adding 20" to make it almost 60" total. Sound about right?? So now the only question I have is how to change the colors - any ideas?? I'm gonna play around with it tonight and see if I come up with anything good. ;)

Laurie, did you already change your colors?
I made something with almost the same colorchange once, and I kept one strand going. I cut one (I always leave a long end, about 15 inches I think) and replaced that with 1 of the new color. After making a few stitches, I tied a knot with the two ends (but not very tight, so I could get it out to weave the ends in later).
I like it this way because the one strand that you don't cut, will keep the whole blanket strong :lol (my weaving in ends never feels very strong, don't know why)

I have one question :
How do you crochet while wearing an oven mitt ? :lol
You are so speedy, the friction that your hook causes would make it hotter than a panhandle on the stove .
Nice work, it is very pretty !

The Round Ripple is a better option to make into a full sized Afghan.

Anybody still working on this? I've gotten to 32 rounds I think but haven't touched in awhile since I'm trying to get Christmas stuff done. I figure I have at least another 20 or 30 more rounds to go. It's gonna be hard to have the ambition to finish this since each round is taking longer and longer to do.

Well I finally finished my two star afghans for my boys. I don't think I will work on the same thing twice in a row. the first Star went together quickly the second one took me two weeks to do.
Sense my boys are both toddlers I only did 30 rows on each afghan. I'll try and get pictures up when my DH gets home, though our digital camera really leaves something to be desired. LOL

Wish me luck!

I recently purchased some camo yarn in different shades from E-bay. I want to make several of the star patterned afghans for our local Army base as they will have a big deployment in April and I know many Mom's will be delivering while their husbands are gone. Thought this might be a way to "link" dad to baby -- sure wish I could find some pink camo yarn for little girls.

I want in! i started this blanket off of a post over at craftster but I'm waaaaaaay stuck
So I am starting this agaon.
I tore it out once and am abut to again
It's round 3 I have the issue with
"Round 3: Sl st in next st, ch 3, 1 dc in next dc, shell, *dc in next 2 dc, sk 2 dc, 2 dc, shell. Repeat from * to 5th point. 2 dc, sl st in 3rd ch of beginning ch to join. (50 dc/5 ch2 spaces) "
So after I sl st into the chain from last round I sl st into the next dc right? Then I chain 3 and after that I dc in the VERY NEXT dc right? After doing that I shell into the next dc??? It seems like a lot of stitches I'm missing if I skip over them and shell in the next ch 3 space. That's when I start the dc 2 sk 2 then shell process right?
I think this is where I lost it last time.
