View Full Version : ~*~Update~*~ Project is DONE - THANK YOU! Comfort-ghan Needed for My 2nd Mom...

September 25th, 2006, 09:04 PM
I just found out that a very dear and close friend of the family has breast cancer. I would like to make a comfortghan for her using 8" squares.
She is having surgery on Friday - they say it's stage one and that there is a 98% success rate with the procedure they are using, but she is taking it very hard.
Her colors in her house are all nuetral - so I would like to stick to a natural theme. I think that any type of "fall" colors would work well with her.
ETA: Any type of yarn will be ok, I will make it work. But please no wool, she is allergic to wool
Could I count on my Crochetville Friends to help me with putting something together for her? This is my very first attempt at making a afghan of squares but I know that the people around here will be able to help me put something together that will be most comforting.
Please PM me for my address.
ETA: OCTOBER 9, 2006 - So far I have received squares from the following people. I want to keep a record in this post so that I know I am up to date with saying my "thank yous"

KnicKnac, I did one square last night and I will do another one (two more if I feel energetic) tonight.
The sage, white and variegated squares are so pretty...(a little intimidated here).
I love the fact that they are 8 inches, not 12 inches, because I'm not a fast crocheter. :P
KnicKnac
October 4th, 2006, 02:38 PM
Please sakurasku, do NOT feel intimidated, these are all done out of love and kindness of strangers. It's just FASCINATING to me that I can put out a request like this and people from all over will donate their precious and valuable time to make squares for someone they don't know.
I wanted 8" squares because I would get more squares into one afghan to show off the beautiful work of these people here on the board.
Take your time.

KnicKnac, I have three squares to send out today. Are we supposed to include a tag? If so, what do I write on it? I never learned the "protocol" in sending squares. :think
KnicKnac
October 5th, 2006, 02:26 PM
Actually, you don't have to send it with a tag. I am making a diagram with each square and who they came from so that appropriate thanks can be given.
I can't wait to see your squares!

If you sent squares and don't see a thank you yet it just means I haven't gotten them yet. My PO is a little slow sometimes so no worries yet! I usually post as soon as I get them. Friday afternoon was the last time I was at the postoffice so squares might be waiting for me when I go back to the PO tomorrow. I usually go to the PO when I go to work, and I am playing HOOKY today!

I am going to spend some time this evening assorting the squares, seeing where they might look their best. There are still a few that say they are sending and I want to kind of hold off until I have ALL the squares in hand.
I am thinking about using rust as the joining color. I don't want to use black and I don't want to use a light color. So either brown, rust or dark green.
Anyone would like to make a suggestion? Rust is her favorite color.

October 9th, 2006, 06:44 PM
Wow, you have lots of beautiful squares now...I can't wait to see the finished afghan. I think rust will tie them together very nicely.

Hello everyone!
I believe I have ALL the squares that were promised here, which brings the total to 61 squares!!! Which is just perfect because I needed 60!!! The extra one I will make into a pillow to give with the comfortghan.
The final box that came - it had 24 squares in it! I have to thank this person PROPERLY but I can't do that without a picture so I have to wait until my batteries get charged back up before I can do that...
Will return after awhile - and you all can follow the exploits of me putting this thing together!!!

Ok people, I have officially STARTED this...I intend on posting pictures of my progress each evening. I am using Drew's method of assembly and I think it's turning out quite nice. It's actually alot easier than I thought it would be.
My husband spent about a half hour this evening laying it out for me. He works with color so he is better at it than I. I took a picture of it so I could follow it.
But here is what is done so far. I decided to alternate between rust and green. Because of the lighter and darker colored squares I received!

I am very interested in that border you are using around the squares. Is that part of Drew's (Crochet Dude), method for joining the squares? I have never tried it, so I am hoping that by watching your progress, I will learn something. This is so incredible! You are doing great absolutely fabulous! :cheer

KnicKnac, Your pictures are GREAT! I'm impressed with how beautiful the afghan is coming along. It's already Gorgeous and you've only just begun. :cheer :cheer :cheer I think I am going to cheer you on, on this, as this is a lot of work for you to figure out where everything is going to go...and then crochet all those pieces together. You deserve the cheers! :cheer :cheer :cheer
Sorry, dummy me just has to ask...... are you putting a separate border around each square before you join it...or is it a join as you go kind of thing?
KnicKnac
October 19th, 2006, 05:34 AM
Oh gosh Daisy! Your a great cheerleader!
Thanks Ilene!
It's a border you do on each square then attach it on the last row. Well actually, it's only a two row border...one of sc's and then this chain three skip two thing. But when you are attaching it, it's a chain two, remove hook, insert hook to attaching square, insert hook into loose loop and chain one thing! LOL
Now that I have THOROUGHLY confused you!!!

October 19th, 2006, 08:27 AM
KnicKnac, the ghan is looking great! I love Drew's joining method, it is similar to the flat braid joining I'm using on my neverending yo-yo scrapghan :lol So much better than (muffle gag reflex) whipstitching the squares together (eww I hate sewing squares together!)

October 19th, 2006, 01:51 PM
