I have 2 giant granny square afgans to make as of right now before xmas, I was wondering if anyone out there would like to do one of these along with me. They seem to be very quick working and the color combos are endless. If anyone out there is interested just let me know I've already started one of mine and will post pics if anyone is intersted in seeing it. Feel free to just join on in at any time if you are interested :)

I just finished one, and I don't think I'd better start on another one until I finish a few of my other projects. However this is a really easy way to get a nice afghan finished. Once you get it going it "grows" quickly. I have been thinking of using this idea to make lap robes for nursing home patients using yarn leftover from other projects. I think it would look fine if each round was a different color. If this is still going when some of my WIPs are finished I'll be back.

:yes I will join in, I have started on one already. It is a great way to use up my yarn. I am trying to use up all the yarn I have by December 31, 2006 so far I am almost done with all the yarn I have. All my yarn is put together by projects and all projects are started or almost finished. now if I can say the same thing about the other crafts I do I would be in good shape.:lol

I'm currently making one as a christmas present for my sister. I've only done two rounds though so I'll definitely join in here... hopefully this'll help me keep up my motivation to finish it by christmas!

So are we talking ONE Giant Granny Square or a Giant Afghan made of Granny Squares?
I have a WIP or two myself to finish by X-mas.

I have never joined a CAL but why not. I have a pile of yarn to use up and I like granny afghans. I like this rectangle one better than the one I usually do it looks better in the middle.

Actually, I just found some baby yarn in one of the bedrooms here and I think I have enough for a small baby afghan so I'll start on that tonight to take a bit of a break from my other two afghans.

Barb, Your welcome, I was originally going to do a square one too till someone pointed me in the direction of the rectangle one.
Librarycat, feel free to join when ever you can =o) I just found out that I actually have 3 of these to make so I will be here for a while, and I have a feeling that my b/f is going to come up with more people in his family that would want an afgan for xmas. But hey I don't mind doing it as long as he keeps making it possible for me to buy lots and lots of yarn lol. I think I have been inspired on what yarn I want to use to make one for us to keep but that won't get made till after all the xmas pressies are done.
But as I promised here is a pic of what I've done so far

I would like to join too. I am also working on a star blanket, but have cotton yarn that I would like to use for a square or rectangle one. The colors I have are blue, purple and green in different tones, so it will be either nice and colorful or very ugly:)
I always work on a lot of things at the same time so I don't get bored :hook

Thanks. I know with all the projects I have going right now, I should be used to multitasking, but I have promised myself not to join more than 2 group things at once, so I don't drop the ball, so to speak. And since I've already committed to Hubby Swap and the Sweet CAL, that's my limit of two for now. Maybe Sweet will go fairly quick.
And I love what you've done with your afghan so far, really dig the color combination. Whoever's getting that one will be a lucky person. :cheer

I've been looking through some patterns for edgig my gahn and haven't found anything that screams use me. Anyone have any ideas for a good boorder to go around one of these. This is for my 18 yr old sister, so I'm not looking for anything too fancy just something simple and nice to make it look complete. Any suggestions would be appreciated =o)
Hope you are all doing good on your gahn's and hoping that we'll get to see some pics soon. I am just about to pull mine out for the first time today I've gotten quite a few more rows done since I posted my pics I'm hoping to get a few more done before my daughter wakes up again then I'll post another picture. I still have to pic out colors for the newest gahn I have to make and can't wait to get started on my next one. I am so excited about these I love how quick they go and the fact that I can do it while paying very little attention makes it perfect to take places with me. I got at least 5 rows done sitting in my truck at our local hang out the other night while people came over and talked to me and asked "oh my god, are you really crocheting? That is such a granny thing!!" lol.

:cheer Thanks for the suggestion on the rectangle granny. :cheer I put my mind to it and currently working on round 20. Using Claret, Linen and Navy Blue from Caron Pounders. Using the J hook makes it go a bit faster, current size is 23x36.
Will post picture when done.

I was wondering why my blog had so many hits on it in the past couple of days... :)
For an edging, you can do just about anything. I'm usually fairly boring with the edgings on the rectangle. I'll just do a half double crochet around the edge at least once or twice. (usually do that in whatever color I was using when I finished the last round of double crochets)
I've done a fan stitch (sc, sk 2 sts, 5 dc in next st, sk 2 sts, sc in next st). I usually have to fudge a little to get the fans to look right at the corners.
I've fringed one of these afghans (never again. I hate fringing) and when I did that, I just fringed the short ends instead of all the way around.
I dont normally do crochet-a-longs...not sure why. I might for this one (I've got a lot of scrap yarn that wants me to work with it) I've been taking a break from crocheting since injuring my left eye last month. I might just start a rectangle tomorrow.

A half double crochet in a couple of colours (or 3 shades of one colour) can be very nice especially if you work through back loops only. It is one of my favourite edges.
You can't go wrong with a simple Treble shell-stitch either.

Here's what mine looks like so far. It's about 17 inches square so about half done for the baby afghan I'm making with this one. I haven't dug out my other one yet, but I'll get pics up of that one when I can.

thanks for the suggestions guys. I might try a fan stitch and if I don't like the way it turns out I'll do the half double crochet. Although i've never used that stitch before, can't hurt to learn something new =o)
Oh please do join us Erin I love crochet alongs they are fun and keep me focused on what I need to get done. although I did kind of put asid my 200 blocks book for the moment to get these done for xmas, pressies are more important than my own personal gahn

Maybe I'll actually get one of these finished some time soon. So far it looks like the baby-ghan will be first since that's the one I'm taking to classes with me today. I need more yarn for the bigger one but I'm not sure what color to use sicne I can't find the original color anywhere now.
ErinLindsey
October 2nd, 2006, 12:50 PM
Take some black yarn and do a round around the color you've got now, and then add a new color after that round. Everytime you change colors do a round of black before you change colors. If you dont like black, pick another color and do a round of it between each color change. It'll make the other colors in the afghan pop out.
I did a rectangle scrap-a-ghan last year where I used up a bunch of yarns where all the colors clashed with each other. What I did to make it all go together was use a neutral color inbetween each color change. (well,it wasnt exactly neutral, it was a pastel purple color) and the afghan turned out really cool looking.
Used up a small percentage of my scrap yarn (I have a LOT of scrap) and my dad loves the afghan. He snatched it away from me before I could decide who to give it to.

I made one in baby yarn (Cuddlesoft) about 10yrs ago. It went quickly, and I made it HUGE. (it wasnt for a baby, I just liked the color) I wish I had taken a picture of it to show. I didnt start taking pictures of my projects until maybe 5yrs ago.

Whenever someone asks me that, I just tell them to use whatever hook feels good.
and as for size, I'm one of those people who will crochet until the afghan just "feels" finished. If I think it's done. It's done.

I just started a new rectangle. I've been trying to figure out what to do with the four 16 ounce skeins of Red Heart (cherry red) yarn that I bought over the weekend. I think I'm either going to do a xmas themed afghan (I have lots of green), or I'm going to do a weird variation on my scrap afghans. (3 rounds of red, to one round of scrap yarn...a different scrap color after every 3 rounds of red)
I just have to decide what to do before I have to change colors. I guess I better go check my supply of green yarn.

Hmmm I need an opinion from you guys. If I were to make one of these to be the size of a queen size bed would I be better off making a square one or a rectangle one? Or would it really not matter I'm trying to plan for the one I plan on making for myself I really want it for my bed just wasn't sure which would be a better shape for a queen size bed

Aren't king sized beds more square than the queen? The genral shape would be your best guide - do you want it to drape over the sides/bottom of the bed?

I made a red, white and blue rectangle about 5yrs ago that mostly fit on a queen sized bed. I have no clue as to how many rounds I did on it tho. I had a picture of it, but that was at least 2 hard drive crashes ago. I no longer have the afghan. I hardly ever keep anything I make.

Are you doing a chain 1 in the corners or a chain 3?
I've had a few of my rectangles look a little wonky on me when I first start them (I'm on round 5 of one right now) and it seems to straigthen itself out once you get a little further along in it. Seems like the weight of the afghan helps straighten it.

:jumpyay Guess what I found???? :jumpyay :dance
Oh yeah!! I found the rest of the yarn I need to finish the neon granny:woo I needed two more skeins of each of the four colors. Gosh darn it I purchased it on clearance and have been driving all around town for more. It really makes me mad when I know I saw it somewhere but can't remember where it was that I saw it. And then it ends up being in the last spot. Ah well at least I found it.:woo
Now I'll finish the rectangle granny (BTW - love , love, love the pattern- will do again :c9 :yes
Then onto finish the Neon square ghan (hopefully this weekend) then I will be back on task. Only problem with finishing them I will have to start thinking of a new color scheme :eek I think I have one in mind.
I will double check the database on Project rest assured to see what is needed.
Thanks to all for this push.
Will post pics when done!!:yay

Yes Laura. You can just make a granny square and keep going. A giant square makes a nice throw.
I know how it is when someone doesn't answer a question. Sometimes though people are busy and just go to the last page to put up a post and don't read all the posts. I requested some help for a skirt I am making and no one answered but finally Interweave Crochet answered with some corrections.

Use any granny square pattern that you like. If you pick one and it doesnt work for you, you can always frog it and start over. (gotta love that about crochet)

Hi Ladies
I am a long-lost c-ville member who has recently been lurking here, watching some of the CAL's in progress . This one sounds like so much fun . I would like to join in. I started last night , using this pattern :
http://www.onceuponapattern.com/custom/rectgranny.html
I am using RH in sport weight in all the brightest colors I can find , and would like to make it big enough for my 4 year old grandson's bed .I just finished the first color, a bright green( green is my favorite color ) . Next will be purple, since that is his favorite color .
Hope to post photos as the work progresses a little further .

Hello everyone! I've never heard of the rectangular granny but it sure does look neat. However, i'll have to save that one for another time. I started a granny square ghan on Wed. and am now half way done with it so i'll stick with it. I'm making it for my sons preschool teachers Dad, he only has 2-8 weeks to live so I definitely have to get it done ASAP. I hope no one minds me jumping in here with you all. I think when i'm finished I will start the rectangular one, probably by Monday or Tuesday. I'm so glad to be crocheting with all of you, it sounds like alot of fun.

By the way, your post looks very festive, all in Halloween colors !

October 8th, 2006, 12:11 PM
Thanks Julie, nice to see you too. When you mentioned it was one big square I thought well isn't that great it's just what i'm working on now, heehee. I thought I would do it for myself, maybe for my bed. I do have all of that rose colored yarn that I was doing my filet in before I frogged it & quit, LOL. So, i'm not really sure yet but maybe the rose and something else. I know I want to make my twins ghans too, so maybe i'll do them each a rectangle granny. I just want to make them something simple and warm so this might just be the perfect thing. Hmmmmm........now you have my wheels a turning. You always did have that effect on me :blush . Now i'll have to get yarn shopping, ones favorite color is red and the other blue so maybe different shades of each.
What colors are you using? Who are you making yours for?
JulieKay
October 8th, 2006, 12:44 PM
Hi Tab-
Well, it sounds like your wheels are spinning then, thinking up some good colors already. This is a REALLY great pattern for a bedspread, since it is so easy to do and you can keep going til it's the size you need. The rose sounds pretty . I'm trying to think what other color you might wanna go with. Do you have certain colors in your bedroom that would go with the rose ?
And your boys would probably love their own bedpsreads in their own favorite colors, shades of red and blue sound pretty.
Let us know what you pick out .
I am making mine for Cam - he loves bright colors, so I'm going with all the neon-bright colors like lime green, purple, orange, red, etc. I am just using all one skein til I run out , then starting with the next, so it really won't have much of a pattern to it, just whatever color I add next .
I'll post a photo when I get a little bit farther on it. So far, I have the green center done, and just started on the purple .
Thanks for coming on over ! It's good to have a pal in here . I hope we get to know some of the other new ladies too . :)

Here is mine so far for dd. It is a little slow going as I am making the Citrine skirt and Interweave has just got back to me with corrections (all that time wasted trying to figure things out and I could have been working on this).
I am doing this band of purple and then going back to the pink/soft purple multi-colour.

October 8th, 2006, 06:48 PM
Rachel,
your afghan is very pretty. I like the colors. I am guessing that shades of purple must be your favorite, due to your name and blog name ? Also the afghan has shades of purple !
What kind of yarn is the first color you used, is it a variegated ? The color doesn't look familiar to me .
And yes, this pattern is definitely relaxing -not a lot of reading instructions for this one -- once you get the center done, it's all just repeat until it is big enough or you get tired of working on it ! :)

Rachel~Beautiful start, the colors are very pretty.
Julie~I'm sure Cam will love it. He must have a ton of ghans from you. You just made him the star not too long ago, right? Never can have too many ghans from grandma. Can't wait to see it.
As far as my square one, I am officially done. I just finished the reverse sc border about an hour ago. I will have to take pics tomm. because the light will be better. It's not really big, just a comfort/lap ghan. I went until the colors I had ran out.
I can't wait to see everyone else's progress. All of your colors sound beautiful. I hope to get the yarn to start my rectangular granny tomm. evening.
Have a great night! :manyheart

I've done 9.5 rounds an my pattern is 3 rounds dark green, 2 rounds white, 3 rounds dark navy, 2 rounds white. This afghan is going to be my little sister's christmas gift - she's in high school right now and her school's colors are forest green, navy and white. Since this is getting to be a large project that i can't take around with me on the bus, I've only been working on it during the weekend. I hope I can finish it in time for christmas!

Hi Ankey
Looks like you have a good start on it. You should have it done by Christmas with no trouble, just try to work on it at least a little bit each day. Before you know it, it'll be done ! These go pretty fast in the beginning. Of course, the larger you make it, the slower each round goes !

Hello all,
As stated I was going to finish my two this weekend. DH decided that he wanted to go out looking at fall colors on Saturday and it kind of threw off my schedule. Didn't take any crocheting with me, I too wanted to see the colors. Somedays I wish I could capture those beautiful tree colors along with the crisp blue sky and make an afghan of that....... sorry I slid off the thought path.....:think Oh yeah, I finished both ghans and will be posting a picture soon. I like to take the photos outdoors for the lighting.
I may do that early tomorrow morning then post them later.
Any way I am ready to turn in now to dream of the next crocheting project. I need to assemble some squares together for another ghan. Then I think I will do another rectangle this time in bright white with a border in lilac. Thats the thought process now, but then again I am off to dream land.....:c9 and Joann's has a coupon that expires on the 9th for 50% off one item and I have noticed new colors in the Joann Sensation Rainbow boucle........:manyheart think I have an idea.....:yes

I got started on my rectangle granny Friday evening as planned and got about 9 rounds done before...I decided to frog it and start over! :eek I'm using Homespun, which is kind-of stretchy and it was turning out too "open". So I frogged and elminated the chain one on the sides (I kept the chain one in the corners) and it looks much better. :clap The yarn is stretchy enough that it looks like the chain one is still there.
I have about 9 rounds done again :cheer and I'll post a picture tomorrow! I was running late for work this morning and didn't have time to snap one. Of course, I should have taken one last night before I went to bed, but I didn't want to stop crocheting! :P

And I am so ready to start a homespun stitch-into-chain-space pattern, I think I'll do something manic and start one tonight. Despite the fact I've got at least 4 other projects at risk of UFO-dom. Hoping this'll help me get over my slump and finish those others, too. :lol :hook
Umm, Melissa? Can I play in your CAL, pretty please? Got a ton of homespun in various colors, and AJ (http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/7703/2436/1600/blankets-223bb.jpg) and knit errant' (http://knit-errant.blogspot.com/2006/04/yarn-diet-and-new-lapghan.html)s sierra/rococco combo afghans made in Erin's pattern (http://iamtotallyobsessedwithyarn.blogspot.com/2006/01/granny-square-pattern-with-pictures.html)look gorgeous! You can almost see the softness.... (and if folks like a pastel colorway, check out snarflemarfle's 'ghan from Erin's pattern: http://snarfle.blogspot.com/2006/09/i-have-finished-another-baby-blanket.html. While you're drooling over AJ's giant granny, make sure you browse her other 'ghans on the same page , including another rectangle granny in blues/greens - made me want to try each one!:nworthy)
Erin, thank you so much for putting such care and detail into your posted pattern - I think you've made a lot of folks very happy (and I'm not just talking about the recipients of your FO's :flower) Your suggestions on color separation here in this thread are also very helpful, and I'm already thinking of how to use up that eclectic stash of homespun....

It is good to see you here too . It looks like this giant granny -ghan was a good idea, so congratulations to whoever started it . It seems to be a great success ! It is a real simple pattern and goes quickly, although the BIGGER it gets, the LONGER each round takes, but that's ok -- it's still a real fast -moving afghan .

I am not so sure that this was a great idea as I have now found out I am addicted to making afghans.:eek No wonder people make them! You don't have to worry about them fitting and they are easy to do. I was on knitpicks last night picking out yarn for another afghan for me. Luckily dd is only a year old this month so her afghan isn't going to be too big. I have found myself looking through my patterns looking for afghan patterns. Sigh...... Andrea that is a really good question. I'm using a white one pound and 2 skeins of the purple colors. I'm hoping that I won't have to go out and buy more but hopefully someone will have an idea for us

that is a good question - I bought 13 6 oz. skeins for my afghan and I'm making an afghan to fit a twin-sized bed so I hope I'll have enough to finish the afghan.

wow if you bought 13 skeins I think I might need to go get a few more lol. I only have 2 of each color and a pound of white. Granted mine isn't being made for a bed just something my sister can use on the couch but i want it to be a decent size

I've been trying to figure out how much yarn it takes to do a giant rectangle.
It's been so long since I did one from brand new skeins...the last 4 or 5 that I did were scrap-a-ghans. (I have a LOT of scraps)
Last time I did a rectangle from brand new skeins, Red Heart was still producing the 8oz skeins.
If I had to guess, probably 4-6 skeins (Red Heart 8oz skeins) depending on how big you want it to be. But, I could be wrong.
A baby sized afghan probably wouldnt take much at all.
I guess I'll have to keep track of how much yarn I use on my next rectangle and add that info to my blog.

I am not so sure that this was a great idea as I have now found out I am addicted to making afghans.:eek No wonder people make them! You don't have to worry about them fitting and they are easy to do. ... Of course living in the Yukon means afghans come in handy!

Wonder how much homespun AJ used for hers?

Hi Everyone,
I hope everybodies projects are going well. I just posted and update on my blog of my rectangle granny. It's going well so far.
I'm not sure how much yarn a regular granny square would take I don't think I've done a huge granny blanket before. I'm using baby yarn now . I started with somewhat new skiens and haven't had to get anymore yet.:) But I imagine it would take several to get it done. It depends on how thick the yarn is and what size hook your using.

Hi Mellibean!! what I've been doing, when I get to that stage, ( I use either a "G" or an "H" hook) I crochet the first row with a single crochet stitches, & 3SC+CH1+DC3+CH1 in each corner space(only in the first row corner space; then I go around again, & make all DC this time,in BOTH loops on the second row, and when I get to the corners, I make 3 DC(if the corner seems like it is too tight to make a square corner to move like it should, make 1 more DC) just in the corner loops( it helps to make it turn the way it should). Nothing really fancy, but it seems to hold the shape of the granny pretty good.
I hope that helps a little

Hi Ho Tab !
Yea, I'd dig out all your stash colors and see what you can come up with for your other half, so he stops using your prized afghan that took so long and made you sweat bullets to finish !
He won't care what colors you use, just pull out some and get a good start on it. You'll probably have to make it big to cover him up completely ,so get ready for a lot of rounds ! The first ones go quick, but then they get slower and SLOWER , the bigger it gets .
Let me know what you come up with !:manyheart
and Wendy -- go ahead, you know you want in. You are hooked already if you already have the yarn type in your head ! Might as well jump in feet first . :D

I know just the candy you mean! It's made by Brach's and is usually part of those bag-and-weigh-your-own candy display in grocery stores. I always picked a lot of these when getting a bag! I think it may be called neapolitan or something like that - definitely made w/ cococut. Thanks for the memory trip :D

Sorted and identified the homespun stash - it's amazingly difficult to tell some of those colorways apart :eek. Mill ends are lots cheaper than buying homespun in banded skeins, but at least the bands told you what the color name was! Also, I can see I'll need to treat them as scrap yarn, as the dye lot varies so much from skein to skein. Oh well, it's an adventure, not a problem! I found the sierra, and will be able to resume adding rows to mine tonight. Have I mentioned how much I love working in chain spaces when using homespun? makes all the difference in the world... (and so does using a K hook). First time I tried homespun, I used an H (shudder). Almost swore off the stuff permanently. Fortunately, got advice here at the 'ville to try again with a bigger hook. Much better experience the second time around.

Yea, that Homespun is hard to work with if you use certain patterns or smaller hooks, but with this pattern and a big hook, it should go smoothly .

I got my "Crochet Pocket Reference" when I got a subscription for Crochet! magazine and it gives measurements for different size afghans. It says for a coverlet/comforter queen size it should be 90"x95" and for a bedspread it should be 102"x120". I know somewhere in this thread someone was asking so if you still need to know that is what they say. For a toddler it says 35"x40"-45" so I am modifying dd's afghan and putting more purple stripes in it so it will be wide enough. I want it to last her for a while (and then I suppose it will be used for her dolls afterwards). I had no clue as to what size it should be so it is nice to have some guidelines.

this is such an awesome pattern. I already bookmarked it and may try later. I will make one for my brother who doesn't wear blanket at night. His reason is he doesn't want anything heavy on top of him and other blankets make him itch. He's 12 years old and always has a cold or a flu because he doesn't wear a blanket :( .
I'm looking for something soft and lightweight to make a blanket or a giant afghan for him. It seems like LB homespun is good but I've heard it sheds a lot. Maybe pairing homespun with Caron simply soft may help?

I have used Caron Simply soft and made a ghan with it- it is heavy (at least the pattern I used) Have not done a complete ghan with homespun -so can't comment there. But try Joann's sensation rainbow boucle, very lightweight - it is available on line if you do not have a Joann's near you.

I really like the red, white and blue one. My favorite colors to crochet with are red, white, and blue.
I had read several months back that someone was doing a rectangle with the Joann's Rainbow Boucle' (was that you?)...I'd been wondering how one would turn out with that. (especially since I have 3 skeins of the green Rainbow in my closet, just waiting for a project) I did a half granny square shawl with some blue Rainbow earlier this summer.

Hi Andrea
Thanks-
I used about 32 oz , I would guess and it was almost big enough to fit on the top square part of a double bed, with no hangover on any sides.
I didn't measure it, and already sent it home with Cam, so I don't know the exact inches it was, but it was pretty big for a 4 year old !
I used an I hook .
Hope this helps !

Julie it is very colourful and I am sure he will love it. They are happy and fun colours and they combine beautifully. :clap
I am still plodding along on my Orange Blues as I frogged the large section I did last night. Mine now measures 48X42 inches and I am working in granny square so it is taking me a while to get around each row.

Good Saturday Afternoon to everyone:clap
I have to admit, in the last part of this week, I haven't worked on my granny too much, because I lost all of my blog, I went to the blogger beta, & everything was gone:think :eek so?? I have another blog with blogger, & I think I like this one even better:yes ,so anyway, if you would like to visit, all of you are more then welcome!! it has taken so many hours to try to get everything the way I want it, with asking my DH if it looks right :yes :hook so I'll get busy & try to finish it this weekend...hope :hook
Julie Kaye, your granny is really pretty, and as for the question you asked me about if I had the other 'ghan's colors picked out?? our day bed in our den is FULL of yarn:2hug :eek the next one, is going to be a rainbow granny for one of our grandaughters, and the next one will be white-grey- & delft blue, the next one?? I would like to do it in all light peach with some soft white in between the peach, for our other son & daughter-in-law in az.... I want to make 2 colors of blue, & white, for one, & I'm not really sure about the last one, maybe one like the rasberry, or all in colors of turquoise;!!!!
so, I have to get busy, I've been sitting here all day, working on the computer, & my blog:eek & need to go sit on our couch & put my feet up, & crochet !!!
All of the rest of you ladies, your grannies are soooo pretty:c9

Hello Julie! :hi I love your ghan, it is so pretty. I bet Cam loved it with all those bright colors. :clap Are you going to make another one? I know you want to, it's just calling your name. :devil If so what colors will you use this time? If you don't have anyone to make one for i'm available. :blush :lol Maybe, you can make on for your hubby now. So, did it work? Will you start another one? HeeHee, I hope so. Have a good night! :hug

Oh BTW, I didn't work on mine yet today. YIKES! I know, I know. But, my Dad was soooo bored so I went to keep him company for awhile. Much needed time. I came home to my living room being switched around. :rant Why do men mess with our stuff? :yell I hate it! It looks stupid & none of it's balanced right. It is annoying the heck out of me. :thair He says "it looks bigger" & I say "I liked my cozy LR just the way it was". He covered up my thermostat for the heat, he also put the fish tank on my chest that I keep my yarn in, so now am I suppose to get in it? I could name tons more but I will stop ranting now, thanks for listening though. I guess I have to deal with it for now but he's going to get it. :tryme I am going to go crochet now to calm myself down. :hook

Ok Iam fairley new here and was wondering if someone is wanting to see how many people they can get to make this rectangler granny square afghan :confused or what is going on :shrug If it is I want in :clap I have one that I have been working on and using the red heart camo yarn and also using dk. green in between every few rows. The only thing I don't like about the camo yarn is it is not as soft and it smells funny :worried
Brenda,I did one similar to what you're doing and I had the same complaint with the camo yarn!:angry http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=29482
After it was washed with some fabric softner and dried with a dryer sheet it was better.
What is up with RH yarn, anyhow,,The cherry red I'm using now is bigger than the blue and white,,, GGGGGurrs me off!! Does anyone have a phone number for RH?? I know I've seen it in the 'ville but can't find it now!
Anyhow,Brenda,,Can't wait to see a picture!!:yes

Hi Im Wendy from Australia, I have started a big granny rectangle Afghan.
I had a lot of trouble with it and realised by a friend at work that Im doing my squares wrong. My square was going all crooked and my friend said that to keep your square straight when you have finished a row turn it over and go back the other way. Does anyone else do this?
Anyway I restarted my rectangle doing the turn over at the end of the rows and its now straight I cant believe it..:cheer
I have now done about 20 rows and want to see how big I can make it.
When I have worked out how to put the photo on here I will show you.

Wow, this place has been hopping ! I will answer all of the past replies all in one :
Ines- it is SO good to see you .I have missed you a lot . Your quilt-ghans are GORGEOUS, as always . You sure have a talent for them , I know that !
Nat -You sound like me, I always have so many NEW ideas and projects in my head... to me, it is really hard to accomplish all of them . It's like my brain goes on YARN overload .
I wish you success in completing them all and it looks like you are off to a great start !
Tabby -you ornery thing you . I JUST finish one and you try to talk me into making another one ! I don't know if that will happen or not. I'm knocking around several ideas right now and trying to figure out which one to tackle next .
By the way, I am AMAZED that your husband moved around your living room furniture. Mine would never do that ! ( maybe because I move it so much, he doesn't get the chance ) ,but he is pretty much satisfied with everything the way it is and never seems to comment whether his chair is in one corner or another. I could probably set it out in the yard and he'd sit in it as long as it wasn't too cold out. He doesn't pay a whole lot of attention to where the furniture is .
I don't blame you for being upset about having the fish tank parked on your yarn .The first thing I thought was OH NO .... I hope it doesn't get a LEAK, or you are gonna be madder than a wet hen, with wet yarn !!!!
NSS - Thank you for the compliments !
Olga- you are off to a beautiful start -- you know I love greens, so it is looking beautiful .
Wendy- I just read on a web page the other day someplace about granny squares and it says you can turn them at the end of each round if you want to, so I don't see why it would hurt ! As long as it is working for you, that's all that matters ! Good luck :)

Hi Aussie,
I've done it that way for years, that's how I was taught. But I read awhile back on some other pattern that when you join that row with the beginning, just slip stitch in the next 2 double crochets and slip stitch in between the double crochet group and then chain 3 and do 2 more double crochets in the same stitch and then continue like you normally would.
Either way you do it they look good, the only difference is when you do it the other way all your stitches are facing the same way.
It sounds like yours is going well, so keep up the good work:cheer

OK TABBY :yes
You talked me into it. What did I do, but just go buy yarn for rectangle granny number 2 .
Where is my WILLPOWER ? :ohdear
Oh well, this one is fun and easy, no sewing a bunch of stuff together, so it isn't bad at all !
I'm making the second one in blues and browns . Will have to go down and read the label colors. I know one is a real dark chocolate brown .
I also signed up for a scallop ripple -along . :bang
These along groups are just TOO tempting . Kinda like someone sitting a VAT of GRAVY and a washtub full of biscuits in front of me .

Julie Kay--I can't wait to see the new one you are making. Those are my two favorite colors.
I am still working away on mine but I have a few irons in the fire right now. I am making mine out of Yarn bee fleece lite (very close to homespun) and since it is raining outside it's going to be a crochet day.
I am really enjoying the pics of the finished ghans that are being posted.

Here's my latest:
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c270/witchyrobyn/DCFC0003.jpg
It's in Harry Potter Slytherin colors and about halfway done.
I'd probably be further along, but my darling boyfriend thinks I crochet are too much and started to keep me distracted when we're in my room. Of course, when he crochets, there is no such thing as too much. *sigh* Men.

Robyn~Great granny, the colors are nice. I second what you said, "MEN" *sigh*. HeeHee!
Julie~LOL, I'm so glad you got a taste of your own medicine being sucked in to one of these CALS. It serves you right batgirl. :tryme :devil

Okay, I was able to work on mine for a bit last night & finished up that one skein of variegated. I also got two rounds of tan on & 4-5 rounds of country blue. I'm doing the dreaded laundry right now, but when I finish up i'll take a pic. and post it. Have a great one! :manyheart

Hi Miranda
I hardly ever make anything with blue, so this will be a rare occasion. I liked the blues and browns together so hopefully it'll be pretty. Someone else in here is making one with blues and browns ( with a variegated ) and I thought it was so pretty, so I am KINDA copying of them, but I don't have a variegated and may not have the exact shades of the other colors they do . I'll post a picture when I get a good start on it .
Robyn -- I have only read the first Harry Potter book ,so I'm not familiar with the colors you mentioned, but it IS pretty ! I am also partial to anything with greens and I like greens and browns together. They remind me of the woods .
Tabby
Batgirl here. It sounds like you are getting a good start on yours too. I'll be watching for photos later today when you get the time . How's the illness in your house ? Is everyone improving or still sick ?

These are dead simple and work up fast in my opinion. I am not a fast crocheter and I think they are fast. I think these are one of the faster afghans out there. Use bulky yarn and a bigger hook if you need to get them done faster.
