November 21 -- the box is sent with 12 full size afghans and one child's ghan. Thank you all!!!!!!!
Over in "other topics" we've been talking about making comfortghans for the Lancaster Pennsylvania community which suffered such a terrible loss this week.
I would be glad to assemble squares and send them to the church Jimmie Lu mentioned. Let's use the colors Kathy suggested:
the appropriate colors would be darks and lights of basic colors, nothing loud. Blues, Greens, Purples(deep or lavender), Rose and Red.
Here are some Amish designs to give you an idea of what we're aiming for.
http://206.204.3.133/dir_nii/nii_esprit.html
Please, no flecked yarn, and variegated only as an accent. (If you already made variegated squares for this, please send them! Sorry it's taking me a while to get organized.)
Acrylic yarn: RH Super saver, RH TLC, and Caron Simply Soft are good.
Standard 12" and 6" squares will be fine. When in doubt, make it smaller. It will be easier for me to add than to take off from a square.
Please, no knots showing. Work your loose ends in at least 3 - 4".
Please leave 18" (for 6" squares) to 30" (for 12" squares) of yarn for joining. If you already have squares without tails, no problem. Send them as they are!
Deadline: Nov. 1st. This will give the overseas crocheters time to get squares to me.
PM me for my address and we'll get started. Thank you all so much, Mary

You said 6" squares, too right? :think
I was thinking I could finally get some use out of my 200 Crochet Blocks book. So far I have two darkish lavendar 12" squares.

Yes, you can definitely count me in, as I was the one who started the other post. I will mention though, please no fancy squares, you might want to note that. Just plain jane granny squares, or plain stitched. Living around and knowing amish families, they do crochet, but never any fancy things. The colors that were suggested are perfect. Will make up 12" squares. Please PM or email me with info on where I'm to send squares. Bless you all.

Another question, since Wanda Kay said that about nothing fancy. (I knew that, but...) Does this one (http://www.heartmadeblessings.org/patterns/caringhearts.asp)seem all right? Or too fancy? :think I was thinking it would be okay but when you said 'Plain Jane', I started to worry.

That's a pretty, but not too splashy pattern (and kind of evokes an image of a cross too). It would be nice if we could come up with a uniform pattern to use so that the afghans don't look too.......um.............gaudy. :eek

Can we use Red Heart yarn, or should we use natural fibers? I have some lovely country blue Red Heart that I'm not using for anything else that would be good for this, if acrylic is okay.

I like the caring hearts square a lot.
Mom W a Motif, yes, 6" squares are welcome.
Would a square with a cross be okay?
You are all helping me recover from the shock of these events. Your love is so sweet.

Mary,
Is acrylic okay to use, or should it be natural fibers?
Do you want the ends woven in, or kept long for joining?
Just want to make sure we're all on the same page.
Thanks,
Jen
p.s. I like the Caring Hearts pattern, previously mentioned here -- Drew's (The Crochet Dude) Maggie's Square pattern (http://www.heartmadeblessings.org/patterns/Maggiessquare.asp) is
nice and simple too, yet the XDC gives it thickness and texture.

okay, I started last night, just making simple old fashioned granny squares in acrylic - country blue and white.
Is that okay? They are 6 inch squares.

October 5th, 2006, 09:18 AM
Let's go with acrylic yarn. Most Red Heart super saver skeins are great. The last white I bought was rough, but most are wonderful. RH TLC is very nice.
Go ahead and leave a some yarn for joining, about 18" for 6" squares and about 30" for 12" squares. If you have squares with no tail, don't worry about it!!!!!!!
When in doubt, let the squares be a little on the small size rather than too large. It's a lot easier for me to add to a square than to take away!
I agree that Drew's "Maggie's Square" is great, and would work fine for this project.
Tina, I love country blue. :hug I can't wait to see your lovely squares. White is good as well. I esp. like country blue and white together.
With the afghans I'll include a letter explaining that we are sort of in the habit of making decorative squares, and to please forgive us if anything is too fancy. We're not putting on airs, just showing love. I think they'll understand.
****
Denny is sending off white squares for the family of the man who caused this tragedy. Anyone who wants to send some to add to this comfortghan will be welcome. See page 5.. please send squares for the Roberts family to Denny. Thanks!
Love you all, Mary

Okay, I'll do 10 Country Blue and White granny squares (one for each girl) and then four white squares, a little more fancy, for the other family.
You are handling the Amish family, Mary and Denny is handling the other family, right?

Here are some more squares that are not too too fancy. I haven't tried them all, but they look like they would work.
Panda's manly square and E Zee V Zee available at http://pandacrochet.8m.com/index.html
You can go here to check out all of Dayna's 12" squares. Some are too fancy, but some are simple. I really like the way she has the website set up for easy viewing.

I'm sorry for your loss.
I need some clarification for these comfortghans. I started a solid color plain shell square last night - very boring.
1) do they need to be solid colors, or would you like mixed colors as long as they are not flashy?
2) I'm guessing from reading through that it doesn't have to be a plain - just shells square, and that some of the other patterns are ok as long as they're not intricate.
3) I'm using Caron Simply Soft - is that ok?
I'd like to send as many as I can manage to make, but I'm not sure about design and single color.
salos
October 5th, 2006, 11:31 AM
Caron Simply Soft is great. I'm new at all this, but my guess is that if we keep things somewhat non flashy, it will be okay.
I think that I maybe just now lost a PM. If anyone sent me a PM and doesn't get a reply, Sorry! Try again.
Theworm asked if there's a deadline, and the answer is no, not really. I'll keep everyone posted on our progress.

Everyone keep in mind our basic colors: Blues, Greens, Purples(deep or lavender), Rose and Red. Thanks!
The Amish near here use polyester double knit fabric all the time because of its durability. I don't think they'll have problems with acrylic yarn. Besides, I don't have a store around here that sells natural fiber yarns.

I understand the colors, but what about variegated of the colors?
Examples: Rose, country blue and white variegated.
Blue variegated...
On the white/off white squares, can they have very little of other colors in it? Other neutral colors...flecks of color???
Also, can I attach a small note for the families to the squares? Just something like "Thinking of you" and my name and where I'm from.
Can you PM me with the address to send them to?

Rose or maroon is fine, but no bright red. The amish in our area don't wear anything bright. They do use any type of fabric or yarn that they can get that is in muted or toned down colors.

Just for the record, I'm going to make some 12" squares in Simply soft - soft lavender and dark soft purple colors. I'll see how many I can whip up in time.
Also, CrochetRN, I am so very sorry for the loss of your cousin. I will keep your family in my prayers. :hug Unfortunately, I just got a call a little while ago today that my last surviving grandparent, my Grandma, passed away. I'm still in shock I think. Feeling quite numb. We are burying her on Monday. I'm hoping that having this crochet work for these afghans will give me something to focus on and provide a distraction -- that I/we can't do anything for the ones who are gone, but maybe in our own simple way we here in this loving internet community of crafters can give some sort of solace to the ones who survived these terrible losses.

I would like to send some squares for this I'll see what colors I have. I just am so amazed by the grace of these people. I heard tonight that the granfather of 1 of the girls that was killed went to the killers house the first night & told the family they all have forgiven the man for what he did. I guess in our daily lives we could be more like these gracious people and forgive people in the same way for the little things they do to us.
Crochet RN & ChicagoHooker I'm so sorry for both of your losses.

Thank you all so very much for your kind words of sympathy. I miss my Grandma very much and am heartbroken that I didn't have a chance to say goodbye to her. She was warm, caring, yet feisty with a wicked sense of humor in a way that made her seem so ageless to me. Thankfully, I have so many fond memories of time with her.
At this point, I'm still rather numb. I've cried, but it hasn't quite hit me yet. I fear that all the emotions will come rushing in on Monday when we bury her.
Ironically, just at the moment she died (unbeknownst to me) I was at the bookstore looking at the dust jacket of Mitch Albom's new book For One More Day, which poses the question, "What if you had one more day with someone you'd lost?" It's about a man who has one more day with his deceased mother.
I think that the fact that I was looking at this book just as my Grandma passed was The Lord's way of reminding me how precious and too short life is -- to treat every day with loved ones as though it will be your last day with them -- to leave behind all anger, hurt, resentment, wounds and never take love for granted. :manyheart
God bless everyone here, especially Mary, who are taking the time to make these afghans as a way to extend their love and compassion to the (very brave) families who lost their little girls in this tragedy. It's keeping and honoring our collective sense of community as Americans and human beings that will help us all rise above the evil that challenges us each day. :hug

Hi to everyone!
I would love to help out with this also by crocheting some squares. I am thinking of 12 inch squares unless I find a different 6 inch pattern.
I used to live in Harrisburg, PA before we moved down here to FL last year. We used to visit all over the Lancaster area many times. My heart goes out to all the families involved.
I sent a PM to Mary already to ask for address; and also sent PM to Denise because I want to help on that also for the Roberts family.

Hey Jen! Thanks for adding your talents to this effort! If you, or anyone else are looking for some good 6" patterns, there are some great links on Martha's site: http://home.inreach.com/marthac/6squares.html A lot of them are pretty fancy, but there are quite a few simple designs there as well, such as these: http://home.att.net/~susanBinKC/patterns/squares6.html

I posted off my squares today. I made 4 12" squares in rose and in forest green and 4 6" squares in the same colour.
I posted them via air mail and was told it would take 7-10 working days to arrive, I hope they get there in time. Although it was the more expensive option, it was much preferable to sending via sea mail which would take 3 months!!!
Anyways a big thank you to Mary for organising this and putting all the squares together. :)

Sahahne, you really don't have to worry about your squares arriving in time. For one thing, I wouldn't want to leave out your squares for anything. Also, Do you really think I can finish ten afghans in that short of a time? Besides, those families are going to be needing loving care for a long time. This week my husband and I talked with a man who lost his wife and daughter nine years ago, and he's still recovering. So, while I don't want to delay, I know that there's no hurried rush.
Today might be the day when the squares start arriving. Thank you all so much for your participation. It means a lot to me, and it will mean so very much more to those families and that community. hugs, Mary

I think with ten comfortghans, I'll be able to sort out the squares so everything will find things that match. I know some people are tight on money so I didn't want to say, "Everyone go buy such and such yarn." I really think this will all work out. I'll keep everyone posted on our progress.

I just received some squares from CrochetRN. They are so nice.
If someone is wondering, we're about a third of the way there as far as having enough squares. So if you're snowed in (New York) or sunburned (Florida), it's okay if you make some squares today. :hug Mary

Denny:
My 8 year old loves to crochet. When I was crochetting the squares for the comfortghans that Salos is putting together, she wanted to help and I told her that they needed to be certain sizes and colors. Unbeknownst to me, she put together 8 sqares!!:heart They are quite pretty, each square is lavendar, sage green, slate blue, cream and a varigated of all of those colors. Here is the drawback, they are all 8 ":oops. She followed a pattern and ended up with 8" squares and she wants me to, "send them for the families who's little girls are with God now and the little kids who miss their daddy":cry . Now I know they won't work for Salos' confortghans because they are the wrong colors, but I though maybe(?):think you might be able to use them? It is ok, if not - - we can save for another project. I would make them bigger for her, but over the next 5 weeks, I just won't have time. I have two business trips :plane and I am teaching:blah a class in between!! Work, work, work:bang - - I just wan't to crochet!!!!:hook Anyway, let me know.
My squares will be mailed either today or tomorrow!

Four six inch squares are on their way - the 12" Heart Square kept coming out with lopsided hearts, so I frogged it. I didn't want to you have to wait until I made another one, so I'm sending the 4 little ones.

I have a question - will any of the afghan's go to Roberts family?
I just checked with a friend in PA who knew the Grandparents of the family. One girl did come home - probably the one that got shot in the shoulder. As for the other 4 - she doesn't know. The parents are keeping things quiet from the press. Which I think is good because I said why should they be treated any different than you or I just because they choose to live their lives simpler than the rest of us. But I do kow for a fact and I won't go into detail,.....there were Angels:angel amoung them at the school house.

The afghans are so beautiful!!! I have been out of touch for a week on a business trip, while you have been hard at work on these comfortghans, and you have accomplished so much! I feel like I missed out!! I have even forgetten which ones I did (my age I guess :lol )!! Anyway, they are all so lovely, what a wonderful job. Well I am back in town if you need any more squares, just let me know I can crochet a few more while my daughter is in rehearsals!!
Denny:
My DH mailed our daughter's squares, the remaining skeins of yarn and a few squares from me, late last week. What a sweety, he boxed them and everything!! He was worried he was sending the wrong squares and matching skeins :think (we put the box together over the phone, while I was on my business trip!!). Anyway, you should be receiving it any day if you haven't already. Again, if you should need any additional squares, just let me know I can do a few while my daughter is in rehearsals and I am just sitting and waiting!!

Tina, can't wait to see your squares.
Dragonfli, I could use some light colored squares, lavender or rose.. both sizes. I have a lot of dark squares, esp. 6" that need to be lightened up. Thanks for whatever you want to do!
Worm, afghan #4 was done like this. I crocheted four little purple corners onto each square. Then after I did the last corner, I didn't end off but worked sc ch 3 around. Then I joined the squares as I went using Priscilla Hewitt's flat braid joining. Then I worked 3dc in each loop around the afghan.
The corners are made this way. Using an I hook and WW yarn I joined in the corner, then chained 3 (I chain loosely). Then I worked a granny kind of side: 3dc one fourth of the way across, ch1, 3dc in the center, ch1, 3dc 3/4 of the way across, trc in corner. 2nd row: chain 3, work 3dc in ch1 space, ch1, 3dc in second ch1 space, trc in top of chain 3 from 1st row. 3rd row: repeat row 2 except you only work one 3dc. Last: ch2 and dc in top of ch3 from previous row. Or work a quad crochet instead of the ch2 dc.
This corner seems a little snug, but it worked out fine when everything was assembled. Hope these instructions make sense.
hugs all around, Mary

I want the afghans to go to the surviving girls and to the families who lost daughters, but it's really up to them where they go. I don't think it's a problem that there are more than ten afghans. For one thing, it gives them more of a choice.
I emailed the church that's supposedly coordinating things and haven't heard back. My plan was to wait until the afghans were finished or nearly so and make some telephone calls.

Mary & Denny:
I have finished my squares and I'm pretty sure they'll arrive to both of you by Wed. I hope that I am not too late to be included. I was only able to make 2 of the 12inch squares - one to go into one of the girls blankets and the other for the Roberts Family big blanket.
Thank you so much to both of you for organizing this to help us show some love and caring to the Amish families involved and the Roberts family also! I know that the recipients of these blankets will be able to feel the love from all of us in each and every stitch!
Thanks also for posting the photos of the squares sent in to you and the finished afghans! They are ALL so beautiful!

Nine of the afghans are completely done.
There are four still in the works. One has about 20" left on its border (I ran out of yarn -- I hope it comes soon.) One only needs a border. Two are ready to be assembled. So we're really close.
Worm, I'll try to make some notes and share what I've learned. Thanks. :hug

Mary:
I doesn't matter to me whether my name is on there or not, whatever you are doing for everyone else is fine with me. Where you able to use the small 6" rose and lavendar squares? Or did I send those to Denny :scrachin I know I sent her the varigated ones my daughter made, but I think they were 10" :huh Oh well, it doesn't matter, I just try to keep track of everything in a book I have. :think The reasoning behing this:
5 years after my grandmother passed away I was going through a box of things my Aunt have given me that belonged to my grandmother. There was a little black book in it and I opened it up and started reading through it and at first it didn't make any sense to me, but after about 10 minutes I realized that it was a log of all of the projects she had done, when and for whom. There were crochet projects, knitting projects, doilies (isn't this tatting?) and hand made quilts. I also found a hand made quilt that her oldest sister, Oma, had made for her when Oma was 98 years old and it was still wrapped in butcher paper and tied with twine. Since Oma was 98 in 1977, the quilt will be 40 years old in 2007. (I can post a picture if anyone is interested). Oma was Amish. Interesting ha? So, I decided to try to keep track of my projects like my grandmother did, but I forgot to write down the last set of squares I did for you. Thank you.
p.s. Maybe I shouldn't have posted this here as it really doesn't relate. Sorry, I didn't mean to hijack!!:eek

Dragonfli, there were two 6" rose squares that I couldn't fit in. I don't know if they were yours or not. I had very, very few squares that didn't get put into an afghan, I think only four 12" squares and six 6" squares. I think that's pretty good, considering.
I sent the extra 12" squares to Project Rest Assured, and the 6" squares will find a good home also.

That's wonderful!! Thanks for the recount, I just wrote them in my book, my 9 yr old was trying to help me remember, ie., well you were working on this mom and I was working on that . . . . . so I think I have them down right. I usually write them when I am working on them, but life has been a little hectic lately:thair and the only piece of mind I get is to sit down with hook and yarn!!:hook I keep thinking, if my grandmother can do it with 12 kids, I should be able to do it with only two! LOL :lol

Update on the Roberts comfortghan: I'm busy putting the squares together. Still edging some of them to make them the same size. I think this is going to be beautiful when finished. This is the first time I have put one of these together and it is fun figuring out how to fit it together. I hope everyone is pleased when I finish.
