I did something like that for my grandmother. I used a ripple pattern with LB Wool-Ease Thick & Quick. I used....an N hook, I think. Hope that helps or gives you some more ideas. :)

My db asked for the same sort of thing: thick with "no holes." I used the free Autumn Afternoon pattern from Lion's website to create what we call his "Manly-man Blanky":

This fits your description. http://www.freepatterns.com/fp_pdfs/Other/Crochet/SW_Cables_Afghan.pdf

I used to believe I had to have as few holes, or none, to make my afghans and projects warm enough. Then one day a friend asked me if I had ever used an old fashioned granny square afghan, and I said yes. She asked, was it warm? I agreed it was very, very warm. She explained that it is the holes in the items that makes them drapey. Crochet is very warm, even with holes.

I also used to worry about my kids sticking their toes in the holes. I have an ancient (20+ years) granny square afghan that my kids used and tortured. Their toes didn't seem to damage it at all. I finally got over my worry of holes. :hook

I made an afghan for my DH about 10 years ago which was truly a labor of love. It was all single crochet using 3 strands of simply soft worsted and a Q hook. I started at the right hand side for each row, leaving the ends as fringe. I worked long ways and that thing got very heavy and very boring. :) But he loved it. It disappeared about 5 years ago in a move as things can do.

Oh, I made an afghan for my husband when we were still dating that he absolutely loves - thick; tiny holes; and a little bit different from your average afghan:

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n248/katecrochets/crochet/th_keith1a.jpg http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n248/katecrochets/crochet/th_keith1c.jpg (http://katecrochets.blogspot.com/2005/10/blast-from-past-hubbys-first-afghan.html) It's from Afghans for All Seasons (book 3, I do believe), made with a star-stitch (it's in the directions), and the 2nd color gets carried behind the stitches.

We both loved it so much that I modified the pattern to make one with 2/3 sized squares and total for my daughter (for her rocker, to be "like daddy"). There should be a few more pictures and info at my blog. (http://katecrochets.blogspot.com/2005/10/blast-from-past-hubbys-first-afghan.html)

Linda, thanks for the no holes info. I made a pink one for a friend, giant granny square, in March for her b-day but didn't finish it in time... I figured it would be too cold in the winter for her because she gets cold easily, but hmm... it is a pretty one, though. And it is done.
What is it about men and holes?:think I met a lady once whos sons didn't want holes, so all she made was single crochet afghans for them, no fancy stitches--I thought, how boring (didn't say anything). My dad and brothers are the same way.

The no holes has to be a guy thing! Mine says the same thing. I got this pattern on the internet...needless to say however its become a WIP. http://pumamouse.com/crochetbigbulkybikkie.html

It's a thick heavy ghan...and I tell you...I'm nearly finished with it...but it takes ALOT of patience! I get bored of DC...DC....DC...DC...

Its not only a mans blanket because I showed the one I'm working on to my Mother and My sister and they are fighting over it! LOL...now I have to decide who to give it to.

Good Luck!

Tunisian makes a beautiful, no holes, and yet, still drapey fabric. You could even do color changes or cross stitch on his favorite sports team or hobby...

There is a crochetalong for that, and they would coach you through it...

Also, there are free classes going on right now for tunisian. Follow this thread http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=33820&highlight=class

Here is a thread to see what a graph ghan looks like

Men love these.

I have wondered this myself! I have two theories:

They don't think an afghan that's "holey" can still be warm. I have a pile of afghans in our guest room (our house gets chilly), and my husband's guy friends always ask for "real" blankets in case they get cold. Then they end up with just one afghan, or they'd be too hot! But my non-crafting girl friends think the same way, which brings me to...
They think "holey" equals in some way "lacy" and "girly". I think that's the main reason!
