Armadillo Pattern?

I want to make a friend a hat resembling an armidillo.
Can anyone point me in the direction of some sort of armidillo pattern or suggest a way to do it?

I'm thinking of just making the main part of the hat with ridges and adding a tail/head/arms extra.
