.. this thread will be for the pattern... we can discuss it on the other thread to make it easy to follow if someone misses a day:P

This will take a G hook, almost a whole skein of black... and about a 1/3 skein of white ( these are over estimates)...

The whole piece is worked in sc BUT you will change colors frequently....for this piece I have found it easier to carry the color not being used to the back of the piece.... once we get the pice started I'll simply write something like 7 BL( black) 10 W ( white) 8 BL etc...

also, I do not count the chain one turn as a stitch...but always being in the second chain from the hook ( weird I know)...

If you have problems changing colors here is a tutorial
http://crochet.about.com/library/weekly/aa041203.htm

also... if your stuck or have ANY questions, PM or email me...

...this whole CAL should take no more then 2 weeks MAX....
so lets have fun.....and remember

....its for Halloween.... " and the goblins will getcha if you don't watch out"!!!!

Ok..its pst #6...I can't count...

General notes:
we will be changing thread ( alot)... this piece will not be bothred by carrying the yarn not used tot he back side of the piece instead of finishing off each time

we will do 8 rows a day....easy huh?

This whole pattern is rather easy so if you ahve a problem I am sure it will be my explanation, s ASK if yu hit a bump..

You will need:
G hook
black yarn(ww)
white yarn (ww)

Chain 42( with black)

Row 1..sc in 2nd chain from hook and in every chain across... ch 1 turn

Row 2-5 sc in each sttich across ch 1 turn ( should be 41 stitches)

Row 6 Black ( BL) 33 sttiches change to white (W) 1 stitch ( crazy huh???) BL 7 sttiches ch 1 turn

Row 7 : Bl 6 stitches W 1 stitch BL 34 stitches ch 1 turn

Row 8 : BL 19 W 10 BL 3 W 2 BL 17 ch 1 turn

...............................and have a fine day..... all day long!

Lea, Shouldn't the last count for the black be 7 and not 17? :)

I assumed that it was a typo...

Ok, I know this is a really dumb question, but I need help. I just can not seem to do the crocheting with two colors and make it look good. Can somebody please help me. I have looked at the link, but it does not show what to do with the other color when you are not using it.

shellgo
October 18th, 2006, 04:55 PM
:P Hi there, in answer to your question about carrying the other color! Just lay that other piece of yarn right on top of the other stitches and crochet around it. Like your wrapping it up in a blanket! Then when it's time to change be sure to finish the stitch before the color change. When she calls for white in the next stitch you just crochet until there is two loops of the black and finish that stitch with the white and vise versa!

Please let me know if I can explain it better. . it is easy once you get it!:clap

Mine looks like the others and yes the final line is 7 not 17 I think! Fun Fun -Michelle

I appreciate your help. I just realized I didn't word my question properly. Actually my delima is - when you have been carrying "say, the white" and it is time to crochet that one stitch, the white is in the middle & the black is in the back. do I move the white over the black to Yo or do I move the white under the black to yo. My problem is - when I make the white sc, it is not a clean stitch front or back. And it's not like you are always working on the right side.:(

Hi... back from the class.. Ilene..I'll PM you later... we had such a great time! I had the best group of students yet.... anyhow... the pics are looking good... sorry for the typo earlier... glad I ahve a group of hookers who are on their toes!

.. as for the color changing question... I yo with the new color and move the old color to the back... if I answered how your asking... if that doesn't seem right I'll go redo and see if we can make it work for you...

the first little sc in white seem a bit random I know... but they do work with the pattern....

...Good job so far my friends

shellgo
October 18th, 2006, 07:35 PM
:lol Leave it to me to give too much info! I also put the "black" behind my work then finish the stitch. Play with it some, I have found that I pull different tensions and place my yarn in different places with every different yarn type and stitch. I bet it looks much better than you think. After all tapestry or changing colors isn't as clean looking in crocheting as it is in knitting but it comes out looking just fine, and I find it so much easier!!

Again I give more info than asked for!;)

This has been a wonderful project for me to work on. All of my kids are excited to see what each day brings.

I have never crocheted anything that I need to carry colors--I avoided those kinds of things actually because I thought it too "difficult" for me. This has been great for me to see that it isn't so bad and that even I can do it!

I did mine before breakfast so I wouldn't get it dirty. I have been known to crochet and eat at the same time, but I had heated up breakfast empanadas this morning. (my middle daughter is dating someone from Columbia, so she is learning to cook some dishes. Some is rubbing off on me)

Looking at it it's as if the top of it's head that we did today is off to the side instead of on top. I am betting I skipped a row or maybe missed yesterday's last row! Arepas are corn maze patties, real thick that they usually deep fry and then fill up with blanco cheese and either a shredded chicken or other meats. They eat them at nearly every meal. My husband lived in Venezuela and introduced them to me!:lol And I'm still hungry but at least my ghosts isn't suffering anymore!:D

Yes, I have had them, but not stuffed. Sounds much better. I am going to have to try that. Sometimes I cheat and make empanadas with canned biscuits rolled out. I know they are not traditional, but you don't have to fry them.

Lea, empanadas are a type of pastry made with fine spanish cornmeal that you roll or press out, place some filling in (shredded meat & potato, or egg, sausage and cheese, or a variety of other filling ideas including fruit) fold it over, press to seal & fry. They are actually pretty easy, just takes a little while.

Hi Everyone,
I know what you mean about cleaning or crocheting. :D I've been completely glued to the computer waiting for rows to show up or just checking out all the great stuff and crocheting like crazy:hyper

I did mine this morning but have been out most of the day or someone else has been on the computer:grumpy :lol

(clickable)

Mine's a little off I think. I ended up with only 40 stitches. At the end of each row I always had one less, but I kept going. Looks good I think for my first try!:yay
I was thinking of making it into a pillow or something for one of the kids to have.

Starr and Ilene yours looks great:cheer

I think your ghosty witht he mosty looks great! ..I use to come up with one short until I went beyond what seemed like the last stitch ( not sure if that makes sense) so I was actually digging around doing a stitch into the top of the chain stitch... or maybe you just missed a sttich somewhere... it doesn't really matter with this piece though... Great job!:cheer

Thanks Lea :D Yeah I'm not sure either, I was using the ch st from the previous row at the end but maybe I went to the second st on the next row, although it looks pretty squared off.
Oh well he's a cutie anyway :lol It was hard to see with that black yarn, hadn't worked with that in a long time. :hook

Choices Choices Choices...

...... at this point you can leave the Ghosty with the Mosty as is and crochet a back for him crocheting 34 rows and join all around...
OR...
If your really really ambitious, you can crochet a few squares of white in teh same size and a couple more of the Ghosty and have a halloween throw( if you would finish that before Halloween...your awesome).....
OR.....
When I originally designed the pattern it was for a treak or treat tote...
If you want to keep going...

sc 3 more rows in black chain 1 and turn after each row

then ...sc 14 chain 20 sk the next 12 sttiches..sc in the next 15 ( to end) chain 1 turn

sc across for 3 more rows including the chained stitches....chain 1 at the end of each row

to make the back simply follow the pattern using all black

...so... what are you folks going to do????? And lets see pics!!!

I had so much fun doing this with you ladies... I'll ahve to design something for Christmas!
:hug :hug :hug

Choices, Choices, Choices indeed! I'll take the day to think on what I really want to do with mine. If the rain holds out we have to help my DD finish moving out today and clean up the back yard from the distruction of the laundery room. (Hubby tossed all the debris out the back door as he went, including the old water heater.)

Is it not raining at your place??? We have rain right this second... the sort of rain that makes you want to crawl back into bed..~sigh~ but dh has to leave tomorrow for New Bern so I have to get his clothes ironed/ washed/ packed.....

OH...I was doing my morning random thought thing when I started putting this project together with the Irish rose pillowghan (just finished) and the Dude Monet (just started). I think I will edge the ghost, and a few of his brothers and sisters with the lattice from the Monet pattern and make a few white ones like the Irish rose companion square and join them with the lattice technique.
Very whispy and very quick. What do you think?

And a big thanks to Minwife for the great pattern. :manyheart (could we do an advent calendar pattern for christmas?) :D

ACK!! I ended up cleaning yesterday and then we went to the Greek Festival in town (where dh and friend imbibbed a little too much on Greek wine and beer LOL) and didn't get ANY crocheting done!!! ACK!! But that is OK--the weather here in Savannah is cool and rainy---a great day to get caught up!!

I would be thrilled to do a Christmas one!! This forum has been great for me to get my creative juices going--and has been a stress reliever!!

Had a thought of another option for it, for odd folks w/ my mind frame lol. You could crochet it long enough and then reverse the ghost pattern (from top to bottom) and make a scarf, or a Halloween table runner, or, w/ a shorter length of black added above the head do the reverse ghost and make placemats... or find a container that fits right and wrap the square around it and seam it up to have a vase or even use that as your candy dish for the trick or treaters......(that way the treaters would be more surprised by what type of candy you give and if YOU are a tricker, hehe, could hide a rubber rodent in there and suddenly skeer them w/ it :devil ).

:scared :loco :headache :headache ok, think I need to stop brainstorming ideas, I'm getting a headache from it....lol

Lea, I think that I'm going to finish mine as a purse for me :D I think that I am going to add a few more than 3 rows, make your handle, (maybe a detachable shoulder strap too) and repeat the ghost for the other side :hook
I am so glad that I didn't finish off the black :D

I'm in for the christmas one! This was so much fun!!!!

Lea, thank you so much for this project. It made me determined to get past my fear of the changing color thing. I am still really afraid of multi colors, but am thinking I might be able to figure that out. Maybe you could try a Thanksgiving project with maybe a couple of color changes. It seems to work out really well just seeing a few rows to do at a time, especially with something you haven't done much before.

But then again, anything you choose will be just great!!!!!! :D

BTW - I am thinking of making a pillow with my qhost. I am going to get a piece of black fleece for the back and crochet the 2 together around.

Thank you for the opportunity to learn this fun technique. This is something I have wanted to try for some time. As you will probably notice, this is my first post to the forum. I have "lurked" here for a long time and this is a great forum.

Thanks again for the chance to expand my horizons and to learn from a very talented lady. You are a great motivator.

Lea, there is the neatest thing floating out there that makes this type of project so much easier. There is a rotary blade called the "skip stitch" blade. You roll it down the edge of your fleece piece and it intermittenly places a cut, making it so easy to crochet around the edge. I have a friend that is head of the project linus chapter here, she is the one that showed it to me. So far it is only available thru one lady and the project linus store. It is definitely worth the effort to locate it.

Hi Everyone,

I thought of making mine into a pillow. I asked my oldest what he thought and he said a pillow. I was just going to crochet the back for it but since I was reading all the great ideas I think I will try the fleece backing for it. I think I might whip stitch it on with some black crochet thread and maybe make a fringe type edge with the fleece like they do with the scarves or blankets. I don't have any kind of pattern, just going to wing it. :D

Thanks Lea for sharing this pattern. I wasn't going to do it at first but I'm glad I did. I enjoyed learning how to add the second color yarn. I had a lot of fun doing it and I can't wait for a Thanksgiving or Christmas project! :yay

Well your just going to have to take a pic when you finish... I am really really leaning towards this fleece thing too... gosh... just something else huh?

..............and I think the next Mystery CAL will start the day after Thanksgiving unless I become super woman at working out the design :D

I haven't fully decided yet. Leaning towards the table runner idea since my Grove has a Halloween party coming up. Could use it there. Also liking the idea of your Halloween throw that I could maybe take to work next year to give it more of a feel to the office (plus when it's slow I like to curl up for a "power nap" occassionally...hehe).

Thank you SO very much for doing this. Was my 1st time doing a graph-ghan style technique and I LOVED LOVED LOVED it. Much easier than it looked from the LARGE intimidating type graph-ghans. (shudders from memories). :D Thank you for sharing your knowledge and fun graph :) and I am looking forward to the Yule one or Thanksgiving if you get frisky to do 1 (nudges side, hint hint)

Being the latecomer I usually am, I JUST noticed this CAL. I've been wanting to try switching colors like that, but I've been a huge chicken about it. It looks wonderful, and everyone's been so creative with their ghosties! I think I'm going to have to keep a look-out for the Christmas one!

I wanted to share what I did with mine.
It really isn't finished yet. I want to make a shoulder strap and line it, but I have all of the pieces together now.

This is the front, I made a button closure and I edged it with the reverse single crochet (or some people know it as crab stitch)
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e371/MidknightStarr/my%20stuff/10-25-06_1922.jpg

This is the back (yes, there is a star-shaped crocheted snowflake behind it LOL)
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e371/MidknightStarr/my%20stuff/10-25-06_1923.jpg

I also made sides and a bottom for it. I made holes near the top for putting the strap. I thought that I would put a button and button hole in the strap and thread it through the hole and button he strap to itself :D Of course, you can't see the hole because of all of the black :lol
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e371/MidknightStarr/my%20stuff/10-25-06_1924.jpg

My daughter wants this purse, but I also thought of making another one, but with a Jolly Roger on it LOL

sorry for not getting back to this sooner (been avidly working on the Christmas swaps I'm in) but if anyone is interested, I've updated my blog and posted a pic of the trick or treat bag i made from this CAL. I most likely won't get around to it in time for trick or treating this year but I plan on getting some glow-in-the-dark paint or thread and hopefully I can locate some reflective material as well, to embellish the ghost with. this way my lil trick or treater will be a bit safer while we walk the streets. thanks so much Lea for this CAL. i had alot of fun! :hug
