How many of you have tons of scraps laying around in a basket ! I know I do!!!! If you crochet as much as me you probably have tons of baskets of scraps!! ... so I am going to try this pattern Simple Yoyo Square I thought it was sooo pretty and easy anyone can do it!

so Speaking of Anyone! who is interested in Joining this Yoyo square along with me? This is my first attempt at starting a crochet along so I hope i'm doing this right!!!

the pattern i'm using is here -
http://www.geocities.com/cdjsimon/simple_yoyo_square.html

Hope you ladies join me! its going to be lots of fun!!!

That's a very cute pattern. I've seen it before, and it's the reason I save even my smallest scraps of yarn. One day I will make a yo-yo afghan like this! :)

I can't join the CAL right now though, as I really don't have enough scraps yet by a long shot. :( I only picked my crochet back up about a year ago after stopping for many years.

Good luck with your CAL! I'd imagine that you'll get lots of CAL'ers soon. Especially as Christmas projects get done and all those little scraps gotta go somewhere! :hook

It's so funny because I was just looking at this square online this morning...I actually started something very similar to this in April, but it's over in the scrapghan CAL,

The pattern I'm doing is one solid piece though, you can check out the link here (http://hometown.aol.com/lffunt/scrapyo.html)

I stopped working on mine over the summer because it was just too hot, but am ready to take up working it again...have fun with it...it's tons of ends to weave but I'm in no hurry to finish it up :lol

Hi Tami,

I have been working on this project here and there and would love to join you on this. I am currently working on several projects (CAL's too) and do tend to suffer from a short attention span, so as long as you're ok with my here and there progress, I'll join you. I aim to put a bunch of yoyo's together to make a decent sized afghan out of this, much in the way she did with her bed sized one. I don't want to make individual blocks. I want mine to be very scrappy as well with no pattern involved. I do like her method for joining these!

:hook :yarn :manyheart

Determined to get rid of all those little balls of yarn, I did this pattern over the summer. I did mine in strips instead of squares & loved the way it turned out. Now, when I have just a bit of yarn leftover from a project, I make a few of the yo yos & stash them away. Figure it will be a good hot weather project again next summer. Have fun!

How did you do yours with strips?

Do you have a picture to share? I'd love to see it!

I followed her directions for joining, but instead doing 4 rows of 4, then edging, I did 2 rows of 20, edged then joined the strips. Also did one where I joined all yo yos before edging, like her bedspread. I do have a picture. but being a low tech kind of gal, have had trouble posting here.

I love the idea and you did a wonderful job on your Very Large yo-yoghan! It is beautiful! I might attempt this pattern when I get enough scraps stored up. Also right now I'm trying to ramble my brain on ideas for my first ever swap!

Well, I'm not sure I have enough scraps to do a whole afghan, but I can certainly start making some yoyos!

That is a REALLY nice pattern!! I don't have the patience for something like that!

I'm not sure my attention span would last for a huge afghan, but I think I'll start stockpiling yoyos. I just have to try out that joining method too. Looks pretty do-able.

I don't have tons of scraps, but each time I buy some, I work up a couple of yoyos. I actually started joining some yesterday and they work up really fast. This has to be the all time quickest joining method I've ever used. When the sun comes up later, I'll have to take a pic to share.

Have we lost our leader??? Tami, are you still with us????

I'm sort of doing this. I have 2 scrap-ghans going. One, of which, is a yo-yo like one.
I have a little over 100 of the yo-yo's done and only been working on them about 2 weeks between other projects. They work up fairly fast.

Welcome, Craftytoo and Southerncrafter!:D
Glad to have you. I know my afghan will be an ongoing work and I don't expect to have it done next week, but I really enjoy this joining method. I'll be anxious to hear what everyone else has to say about it:yes . I have been meaning to post pictures of what I have so far and have yet to follow through, so hopefully I'll get it done this weekend. I want a really scrappy afghan and lack enough variety of yarns to get that, so I'll be at this for awhile.

What do y'all have planned?:? :? :?
I look forward to hearing from you both:hook

Thanks Fidgement. Since I have so much scrap yarn, I'm going to try to make the large yoyo afghan, using Chris Simon's pattern. I was looking at the pattern, and did you know that the pattern doesn't tell you to join before fastening off?

Fidgement
October 28th, 2006, 05:02 PM
No, I didn't realize that. I too am working on the big one (30 yoyo's) and I'm using white for the joining. I am also following her rule of no black, white, grey, or brown, but if those colors appear in a varigated, I'm allowing that. I really like the look of the large one she did. The block she demonstrates is much too orderly for me, lol:laughroll !

Cheers!

It will be a long time before I am able to join this one but I have started taking the skeins that dont have much yarn on them and putting them into a ball and placing them in a bag so that part is done at least. Ill pry save this for the hot weather cuz i can just sit and make the yo yo's then when the weather gets cold again start putting together.

I don't really have alot of scraps yet but I'd like to start making yoyo's as I go. I've eyeballed this afghan a few times. I'm not sure which joining method I should use. I'll probably use the one in the very first post. It looks pretty easy. Right now I'll just worry about getting yoyo's done. LOL

I plan on making this afghan b/c the pattern seems really simple. I do have a question about the pattern though. When making the yo-yos, do we join the last dc and the top of the chain 3 with a slip stitch or no? I was wondering b/c the pattern doesn't say to do that, but whenever I've had to make yo-yos, I've had to join the last dc and the chain 3 with a slip stitch.

So, those who are working on this, are you joining after the last dc?

I would love to join this, but I've read the pattern and I'm all confused over how to join the yo-yo's. I've never made motifs and joined them any other way apart from sewing them together or single crocheting down a straight edge....

I want to try, but I'm terrified of stuffing it up!

Darski - I don't have tons of scraps; I just make some from every skein I bring in and throw them in a bag. I already have one row started as I intend to do mine totally scrappy and big like the one she has a photo of at the end of the directions. I really like scrap quilts and hence, thats why I'm drawn to it. So, go for it!:yes

Mandys76 - the joining part is really easy. Just take it one step at a time and if need be, post here and I'll be happy to walk you through it. :hook

Hi Heart:hi

:welcome Tami is the hostess here but welcome anyway! You're already under way with good progress. I anticipate this taking me awhile since I'm acquiring yo-yo's as I go. I don't have a huge (ok, its getting to be big, but not by any means huge) stash, so each time I start a new project, I make some from the new colors. The moral of my story is I expect to be around her for awhile, coupled with the fact that I want a queen size afghan. I try to post pics of my progress so far over the weekend.:flake :snow :wangel :wreath :rud :hbulb :gift :santa :ctree

Years ago I remember seeing an afghan like the yo yo blanket, except the joining was done with different colors not one single color. Is anybody else trying this?

Some one was saying something about not using black, white or beige? Any reason why?

who's going to finish first?:think :D

I'm in :) I was digging thru my stash looking for brown green and white novelty yarn of all kinds to make a scarf for my mom and i found a bunch of scraps of yarn in bright colors. So I think I'm going to make it in bright colors and join with white or black and give it to my little sister for her birthday or christmas next year :)

Count me in. I do think that I am going to do rows though instead of squares. And I might try to offset the odd number rows so that there is less open spaces.
I love the idea of putting the yo-yos in a vase. I have several that are never used and this will be a great way to use them.:clap

Hey, have some funny and disappointing news! Yep, I intended to make several yo-yo's among other things while we traveled ( 17 on road hours! we were stuck in terrible traffic which extended our travel time by a few hours) over Christmas, I only finished 5 yo-yo's out of my personal goal of hoping to come home with a gallon size baggie full.:eek :think , I did start a bearevement blanket for the charity blitz though. Hoping to get some yoyo's made now that I'm finally back home! :hook

here are a few pics, the 2nd one is the vase I'm holding them all in, it holds quite a few, it still isn't full. I have 10 weeks left to finish this thing, and I am confident I can get it done :cheer

this is a lot more fun than I realized it was going to be! I havn't decided yet if I'm doing the hexagon shape, or if I'm going to do it in rows. I'm leaning toward rows though, since that is what the 540 came from :lol

I'm in :)

Started my yo-yos the day after Christmas. I needed a good stashbuster project.

Instead of the suggested "G" hook, I'm using a "K" hook, so each yo-yo would be bigger.

Have a question for those whose started joining. How much bigger would the yo-yos be after adding the edging?

Hi, I'm new here, but I want to join this CAL! I'm no competition as I have 5 blankets on my list of WIPs/WIMs for a friend for Christmas, two newborns twins and two twins on the way. I'll be busy for quite a while, but I do have some Yo-Yos made that I did over the summer.

I plan on making mine ALL pink. I'm a big fan of pink. ;) I definitely won't go with king size, but I'm debating if I want to make it queen for my bed at home or twin for my bed at school (dorm) for next year. Orrr I could just go with a throw.

I'd love to hear your opinions! (And also ideas for where to find more (different) shades of pink yarn! I'm stuck!)

Thanks!!

Welcome to all the newbies!!!

I'm checking in with 103 yo-yo's tonight. Yeah!! Praise Jesus! I actually finished a good bit tonight. ;) I did add purple and peach to my all earthy color scheme, I'm thinking of adding a rose color too, maby make it a garden theme instead of just earthy colors. Cause I've ran out of my greens and browns. :D

My question is that I am finding a bunch of Red Heart Super Saver yarn and a lot of cotten Sugar and Cream. What is everyone else doing about different types of yarn? Are you mixing and matching or just keeping it to one type of yarn?
Thanks

I'm using RH Super Saver, Sugar and Cream and Caron Simply Soft. I figure it should be fine if I join them all with the same yarn. Either Black or White Super Saver. Probably Black.

Not had much time lately to work on my yo-yo's and no idea how many I have done...lol. However, had to share an incident today. One of my clients brought me my Christmas present today. It was a "craft/knit/sewing carryall" full of YARN!!

The thing I wanted to share was w/ the yarn. Several on here have mentioned they are new to crochet or don't have a large scrap stash yet. I'd not thought of this, until today, my client got me several skeins of varying colors yarn, BUT also got me some "craft trims". It's 20 yards of 4 ply worsted weight yarn on a card.

Was so excited because were colors I don't have at the moment and can be used for more variety in my yo-yo's without having to wait to get through full skeins to have the scraps to use. YEA!! :cheer

Yep! Let's see, I have used so far, red heart (regular worsted), bernat softee chunky, jewel box, cheinelle, bernat baby (? name) and 3 ply RH, and Peaches n Creme. I know they are all different thicknesses, but I've controlled my tension and they are all the same size, a few may be 1/8" difference. I've just really used scraps, but I think I'm going to have to add a few colors, b/c I've run out of the color scheme I indended to use. ;)

I have changed my mind as far as my blanket goes. I've added a rose, purple, and more blue to my origional scheme of earth tones, I'm going to use either navy or slate blue to join, and muted greens, browns, purples, pinks, ect, I'm hoping for a color scheme that resembles a Thomas Kincade (spelling ?) painting, just the colors, :D, not the actual beauty of the paintings. Kinda like a french cottage type colors, if this sounds right. I did get some pretty verigated sugar n creme and some Moda Dea Cache' from Michaels today that I can't wait to work up into yo-yo's. jadyn05
January 17th, 2007, 04:46 PM
How did ya'll figure out how many you need.... and how on earth do we figure how many we need if we are doing a hexagon shaped one?? If I knew I could do a hexagon, but I don't so here is how I figured out for my yo-yo done in rows.

Each yo-yo is 1 1/2 inches without the trim, and I'm thinking after doing the sc around to join I can count on 2" per yo-yo. and I want a blanket for my neice that is 36" wide and 60" long. So I need 18x30 yo-yo's which is 540. But maybe 40" wide is better, and then i need 600 yo-yo's. I'm not sure where I'm going to end up stopping, :lol

So far today I have made 36 more yo-yo's, which puts me at 315, which is right on target working once a week on yo-yo's to finish my yo-yo's by the end of February and have 2 weeks in March to connect them before I have to mail it out for my neices birthday. I want to get some more done though, while I have time, so I don't feel rushed at the end. But I am also making an apron for my 3 year old for her birthday on the 31st, so I may work on that some today too. We'll see. I'll be back later if I have further progress to report.

Wtg Danielle on your yo-yo progress, can't wait to see it!

Well Tam, hope you join us when you've cleaned your plate up a little bit! :lol

Today, has been a YO-YO day for sure. I'm not done yet, and I have already made 124 yo-yos!!!!!! :cheer which means as of right now, my YYTD= 454

And I've decided to go a little larger, and will need 600, instead of 540, but still, only 146 left to make!!!!

The kicker for today is that I usually weave as I go, but my needle is missing, and my sis is bringing me one when she gets off work, so this evening I'll be weaving my hands off, but I want hammer out as many little buggers as I can before that, and really make this a very productive yo-yo day!!

Plus, I did 3 more rnds on the round ripple I'm working on, so :hook

Feels great, after barely crocheting this week with the kids sick, feels good getting some great time in! I'll post pics later. You should see this mason jar. It;s a 1 quart jar I think, and ALL my yo-yo's from today are CRAMMED in there. Can't believe how many it's holding.

I think it was through an AOL thing or something, had the net stitch joingin or whatever, but then looking at the new one, I LOVE the joining, so maybe I'll just do that, lol!

wow, this changes everything. When I saw the link on the first post earlier, it changed everything. I'm DONE with all my yo-yo's. I only need the 460 I now have made. At 23 yo-yo's my length is 62", and then I'm doing it 20 wide, so that will be plenty big enough for my 8 yr old neice. And that's without the edging added at the very end :smile this makes me happy, I'm gonna post a pic later, I'm hoping to get 2 or 3 rows joined and done tonight. We'll see.

tami, I think I just saw the name of the CAL and then used the link I already had , then lost it somehow, and looked at the first post again tonight, and was like "well that's different than what I thought" :rofl

Problem is, I "helped" do the math for how to figure out how many yo-yo's it takes to make a ghan, and well, my math is WAY off, being based in priscilla's pattern, since Chris's is much more open, soooo opps, sooo sry.... that;s what I get for assuming. But then, I"m glad I realized it NOW instead of 140 yo-yo's from now, :lol

And woot, the 2 patterns is a 140 yo-yo difference to get the size, and actually at this I'm gonna end up with it BIGGER than the other way with 600 yo-yo's so WOOT WOOT!!!

And thanks for the compliments, they give me warm fuzzies!!! :ghug

Theres been some really neat pictures posted. Y'all are doing really well. :cheer :cheer :cheer :cheer

I read someones post on here, but I can't remember who, about the joining method. I am using Chris Simons method because its continuous and there are less ends to deal with.

Here is what I have done today, I actually added another row after this so I have 4 total rows. It is 12 wide and I'm going to go about 18 long, then do the edging around, then add a boarder of yo-yo's so it will be a good size throw. I love this pattern, it's neat to work on something a little different than usual.

yes heart rh country blue and caron's azure are seriously close in color. I get them confused when looking at them, I have both here in the house, :lol Um, i now have 3 rows joined, but no more pics yet, I really want to get more joining done today, so I'll post pics before I go to bed, or early tomorrow. Today has been hectic, so my hook is currently neglected, and it takes my attention to work on the joining, so hard to do with the kids up and about. It's so great there are a few of us joining at the same time, gives me the motivation to keep going to keep up with # of rows joined :lol

I've been working up my yo-yo's from my left over scraps. After a bit, sometimes it seems I have SO MANY in 1 color and I keep wondering if it will be over-dominated by just specific colored yo-yo's.

Then, there are times I have this LONG piece of yarn when I've done w/ the scrap yarn, but it's not enough to actually DO a yo-yo from. Recently (and here's the basis of my posting...finally...lol) started taking those long, but not long enough threads and starting a yo-yo, when I run out of that color, I bring in another contrasting color in order to finish that yo-you up.

So, I will end up w/ 2-tone yo-yo's, but not like a varigated one. Am I making sense in my description? I was thinking having a few of those thrown throughout the afghan might give it a twist (and like 1 on here was talking aobut wanting a watercolor type affect, sort of give it the twist of "paints running together").

What do y'all think?

Sandy

wow sarah that looks great!!! I never did do more rows on mine the other day, but I will work on it tonight during the superbowl, so I'm hoping to get quite a bit done, also, I'm not sticking to the plan of my future rows, I"m just sticking my hand in the basket of yo-yo's and doing it random that way. My SIL is right, I'm nuts and over think things, so Danielle, if this looks bad b/c I tossed the plan.... I'm blaming you :rofl Just kidding :hug I think it will look great! I'm on target for my goal for the week, which was to join 10, so I have done 2 today, and only need to do 8 more by the end of the week! Which is manageable, once I get in the mode and motor them out.

Hello,
I would like to join in on making yo yo's. I have
a question for you. Are the crocheted yo yo's real small? Maybe like an inch?
I'm working on making yo yo's out of material
and going to make a bedspread quilt out of that.
I saw this crochet yo yo forum and thought it would be a really neat idea to use up my yarn.

I saw one like this a few days ago, but the yo,yo's were joined up in rows.
I think it's a really pretty pattern and have decided to make my dad an afgan for xmas, and have been looking for a pattern to make, I think I will make this one for him and another one for myself, but in rows.

Don't have alot of scraps, but have plenty of full balls, and the colour scheme I wanted for my dad is white and blue anyway.

Need to finish off a few other projects before I start this one.

started to make some yo yo's the other night and my cat cinnamon decided that he wanted to help as well, mmm wasnt that much help as most of them ended up on the floor as he tipped the box over, then when I had picked them all up he started to pick out the ones he liked and run off with them.

Having problems with joining my yo yo's, whichever way I do it they look a mess. So have decided to make them into squares instead, I might try again later on this year to make another yo yo afghan, but at the moment it's not happening. Getting too frustrated and only have a short time to get completed for my dad's birthday, so will have to move this over to the misc afghan cal.

My 9yo daughter and I have similar gauge and both have crochet ADD... and we have tons of inherited stash! I'm gonna play with joining methods, and if it doesn't make me too crazy, we'll start a yoyo basket. We both like to crochet in the car, during game night, duing Bible study... you get it. These will be great for on the go since they take zero concentration and aren't bulky. The plan for now it to just collect... it may take us a year to get around to joining. We can sort by color then, and decide in blanket sizes.

All of this to say- I'm not gonna join the CAL since I don't have a timeline, but I have been inspired! I'm looking forward to working on a project with my daughter, and then deciding together who we can give it (them?) to. Thanks!

is it too late to join???

I started one at the beginning of July, thinking it would be ok to work with yarn in the hot months of summer if it were motifs, and then got the brilliant idea to try yo-yos.

Then I noticed this CAL seemed inactive, so I went it alone, but now I'm losing momentum.

I've made 548, and I think I still need about 78 more. I need to lay them out to make sure I have enough. And then the fun begins to join all of them!
