Does anyone have an easy, basic pattern for an afghan, baby blanket or lapghan - (for a beginner)?

Thanks.

Cadie

You can try these, too.

These were my first projects... I'm a beginner.

They look pretty and feel soft and are very beginner-friendly.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v478/SamplerLady/mmouseplus.gifBecause I'm going to teach beginning crocheting, can any of you explain why you think these are good for a beginning and why another pattern might not be?

Is it pattern reading ability or self esteem? :) Please help me understand what a beginner finds acceptable to attempt and why.

Your volunteering for this experiment will benefit a small number of beginning crocheters in a small yarn shop in a crochet challenged community. :D :D

Sure, I'll help out :)

I think that b/c I'm a 8o nerd, I have my own favorites for beginning projects. Meaning, I've only been crocheting for just over a month and have made a lot of projects in a short amount of time - since I am so very obsessed with my new hobby:knit !
Anyway...
here's my :twocents

Learning the first stitch from the book was impossible for me. I needed to see someone do it. After that, I was able to learn everything from the book.

Beginner patterns:
I was very intimidated at first by the language of the pattern. Translating it out loud was very helpful. I've also heard that having someone else read it to you - or translating it from abbreviations to long words and writing it down helps, too. I haven't tried those yet.
Taking a project that you can accomplish in a short amount of time was totally key for me. I think that I would have been very :bang frustrated if I had attempted something that would take a long time.
I did the Chenille Plush throw from Lions Brand. It is all in single crochet. You use a larger hook (and can use more than one strand) and VOILA! You finish the project with ONE STITCH KNOWLEDGE in about a week. I was sooo proud of myself and ready to do everything!
Suddenly, anything seemed possible.
The other helpful thing with this pattern is that you are not using annoying, scratchy, stubborn yarn. You are using luxurious, chenille. So you feel like you are making something special, even as a beginner.
Make sense?
And when I finished it, it's just gorgeous! I'm really proud of it and gave it to my sister.

Ok... hope that helps. :) My second project was the Lions Brand Big Granny Square Afgan in Homespun (the chenille border that they have you do is really ugly, I didn't like it and made my own) ;) This one was good b/c I learned how to make a round and then how to make that into a square... and then I was able to do the VERY EASY and VERY FAST big square (3 dc, ch 1; corner - 3 dc, ch3). I did it in a weekend and was then very adept at reading patterns.

Good luck with your classes!
