I have some scrap yarn that I wanted to make into a hat for my daughter's American Girl doll. I am very new to crochet, and patterns kind of scare me (not that I have been able to find any for this anyway). I was thinking that I could do rounds until I get to about the head's width and then stop increasing-- will that work?

That's exactly what you need to do. Good luck!

Or you can use a regular hat pattern and a very small hook. which is what I did when I made a doll hat. I used Chelle's Granny cap pattern and a 0 or 1 hook with fun fur yarn. The hats (I made two) ended up fitting a Bratz doll and another one for my neighbor's doll (which is bigger than the Bratz, for that one I think I added a round or two of increases)

Thanks! I'll let you know how it turns out.
