Ok, Ok

Tina (Mom w/a Motif (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/member.php?u=20)) and I have conspired to start this CAL!!! We have both just recently finished one of these, and we are on our way to making more...why stop at just ONE when they are SO SIMPLE to make. A friend of mine is actually coming to my house this afternoon and we were planning on BOTH making these today!

This is a SUPER SIMPLE pattern - it works up quickly, and almost any type of yarn will work, as long as you make guage...do what you have to to make guage.

It's that time of year, in this hemisphere anyway, and actually, someone just made one that is going to Miami - it's just thinner, but you know, babies need to always be warm!!!

So, who is going to join us??? Come on...who wants to play?

Here is the pattern:

Baby, It's Cold Outside (http://www.crochetme.com/Feb_Mar_2005/patt_baby_sweater.html)

We are both majorally familiar with the pattern so can help when needed, so just ask.

What I plan to do is with each finished sweater to place a link here in this first post so that anyone that looks up this sweater will have LOADS of pictures to see!

Ok!!! Cool beans!

ETA - To do Larger Sizes, please consult this post (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showpost.php?p=517579&postcount=257).

Too cool Barb! Let us know what you got. Both Tina and I used regular WW in double strands - the original pattern called for Homespun.

How funny, I am walking out the door in a few minutes to get some yarn for some Christmas projects including this sweater for my soon to arrive nephew.

I'm in! I will probably be starting this in a couple days. I'm planning on buying homespun for the first one. What yarn works well for the edging?

Also I'm trying to figure out a way to do it without using buttons. Buttons and babies that like to put things in their mouths scare me. Any ideas???

KnicKnac
October 21st, 2006, 03:49 PM
Just to let you know, there are two ways to do the buttons, one is with real buttons, but the other is with yarn buttons. I didn't feel bad about the yarn buttons at all. And they are super simple!

As far as yarn for the edging? I would pick something contrasting to the Homespun...Homespun is usually multicolored so pick something that brings out one of the dominant colors...also, I would use a soft yarn like Caron SS or RH Soft Yarn...it would then have the same sort of texture as the Homespun.

Hope you join us!

I was just going to ask what to substitute in place of Homepun, than I seen your post about double stranded WW...i'm going to use a Red Heart 1lb I was going to use as a blanket but don't like how it was turning out...it's a lt. pink/ md. pink/ green varigated:yay off to start this:hook

Woo Hoo!! (I have done two so far. I am almost done with the second one.) And I went and bought some Homespun for a third one. They work up so fast, I will actually be ahead of the game for baby shower presents! (For once.) :P

This is gonna be so much fun!!! :clap
Barb, do you have a picture of what you have so far? Because I honestly didn't like how mine looked when I was first doing it, but now that it is finished (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=36082), I love it.

Tina - yours is really pretty....I started with 2 strands and it felt horrible...so i'm still using a 6.5 mm hook and a single strand of WW i've done the 1st 10 rows already, it helps when the recipiant is asleep and the 2 yr. old get's tossed in the tub so mom can sit on the bathroom floor to finish the 1st 10 rows LOL i;ll see if I can put up a pic..BRB

:lol I do that a lot! Sometimes it's the only time I get to crochet...

Actually the two strands I was using added up to probably one strand of the worsted weight, so I would just do one strand WW maybe and see how that feels? :think I haven't tried it yet with just WW, so I'm not sure on that...

... the 2 yr. old get's tossed in the tub so mom can sit on the bathroom floor to finish the 1st 10 rows LOL i;ll see if I can put up a pic..BRB

Oh! You must have been adding the picture as I was typing this... What you have looks good so far! Did you check your guage? It looks good!

Oh I would love to do this one! :) That looks great! I'm always looking for boyish crochet clothes patterns, and this one would do for boy or girl, depending on the colors. Anyway, my 6 month old needs something a little warmer for our trip to north Alabama at Thanksgiving, so I might just make one up sometime. I've got a TON of other projects to do first, but I'll keep this one in mind. I can't wait to see pictures of yours done!! :)

Woo Hoo! :clap Welcome, welcome, everyone! I am your personal cheerleader. :cheer (I think KnicKnac is busy crocheting one of these sweaters with her friend today.) :P

The nice thing about this pattern is that it is SOOO quick to work up! You'll be able to work up a bunch. I'm already on #2, and plan at least two more to go... :hook

Lilybean- My last baby was a scheduled C-section; 10 lbs 9 oz. (Explain why it was C-section?) :P (The other two were, too; just not *scheduled*- by the time we got to #3, we/they said forget it, just do a C-section!) BTW, where did you get the tan and off-white sweater pattern!? :eek (I was just reading your blog...) I LOVE it! It is so awesome. I am going sweater crazy here myself!! :lol

Tina, after 13 hours of a broken water on pitocin I was still only 2 cm and her head was never in my pelvis so 5 days early I had a 9lb1oz peanut, lol being that they get bigger as you go I am not chancing it, myu dr told me I was lucky to have suggested a c section, b/c she wouldnt have fit. Funny thing is now a days at 19 months she wears a 5t hat, lol just means we better start saving for college now adn its a good thing she has a mommy who can custom make her hats so she doesnt look silly

:lol Sounds just like mine!! My first one was 9 lbs 4 oz. Second one 9 lbs, 13 oz.... You already know the third one. And mind you I only weighed 108 when I got pregnant (the first time- not anymore...) When they get bigger, though, it isn't like they are huge. Jus when they are toddlers it seems like they will be.

I won't bore you with my labor stories. I just couldn't have them, they were too big. I look at pictures now, and their heads were almost as big as mine, and that right there tells it all...

Have they tested you for gestational diabetes? I was tested, but came up negative every time. I think if I ever got pregnant again (not that I'm planning it, but...) I would make them put me on the gestational diabetic diet and see if I had a smaller baby.

Three hours to make. Hmmmm. :)

OK, here's what I'm going to do

My great nephew-to-be will arrive just before Christmas...so I'll need both a "Welcome To This World" and a Christmas present for him. I think this would be a great sweater for the winter months.:wgrin

And I need an easy crochet project for my upcoming vacation. Right now, I'm about halfway through the Cathedral Rose Afghan that's going to be my mother-in-law's Christmas present. However, I can't take the afghan along...since my MIL is accompanying us on vacation. :sun

I have to make a couple of scarves for my DD's sorority project, so that will take up some of my vacation crochet time. However, this looks like a good present for my nephew.

So I'll take notes from y'all in the next two weeks, get the yarn, and work on it while on vacation. Unfortunately, I won't have any Internet access, but I'll post pix when I get back.

Hi Knicknac from South Carolina, my name is Barbara from Westbrook, Ct. I just join this group this week and I have the patter "Baby It's Cold Outside" and have been looking for the original knitted version which was converted to the crocheted pattern by Julie Holetz. The crocheted pattern looks hard, but from what you have said about it along with our fellow members that have made this, keep saying it is easy to do. I can to a little bit of crocheting, but if someone can show me how to do the sts, then I can go back and read the pattern and then it makes sense to me. I will be getting the original knitted pattern hopefully by the end of this coming week. One of our members in our group here has been helping me find it along with someone who contracted her to help and I am very thankful for all her help and all the work she did to find this knitted pattern for me. Her name is Megumi. She was one of the people who welcomed me into this group, along with Sakurasaku who also contacted me and gave me information about this pattern and what website to go on to get it which I already had the crocheted version of the pattern. I want to thank all the beautiful people who welcomed me to this group. If you have any tips to give me on learning about crocheting, I would appreciate it . Again, I welcome you to our very friendly and helpful group of ladies and men too. Barbara Mudd

WOO HOO Barb! We told you it was easy!

I just finished another one tonight! 3 hours? We started at 3:15 - I finished mine completely, including weaving in and embellishments by 10 - now this includes cooking dinner...eating dinner WITH company...doing the dishes...doing about 4 loads of laundry...looking for yarn over at a friends house...looking for a hat pattern...dealing with dueling kids...so no, it didn't take 3 hours, but it was pretty darn close!!!

BJMudd! Thanks for joining in. That is what CAL's are all about...helping each other out thruout a pattern!

WOW!!! So excited there are so many interested in doing this!!!! Both my friend and I want to make some for our BEARS!!! They are SO CUTE!!!

I don't know about the three hours, either. That's what it said on the pattern. Maybe if you sat down and crocheted non-stop you could finish it; but who has three hours straight to sit down and crochet? :P Did you take a picture yet, KnicKnac?

I am almost done with my second one. I can't seem to find time to work on it, though... Maybe Monday when the kids are back in school...

I'm done:fluffy it was so fast and VERY easy, this is the 1st crochet sweater i've completed ( i'm almost done a shrug for me), i've made a similar, one-piece knitted sweater that was just too small for DD so my oldest DD uses it as a doll sweater LOL it is almost midnight so no pics until tomorrow :elle

I've seen this pattern before and thought it looked so simple and cute...BUT...my "babies" are 2 y/o now. I would love to make both of them a sweater though and I really do like this pattern. It doesn't seem like it would be that hard to increase it...any thoughts? Has anyone made this before but in a larger size?

KnicKnac
October 22nd, 2006, 08:00 AM
While my friend and I were working on it yesterday we kept saying how much we would want one of these for ourselves!!! It's really so simple, I think if you had the right measurements you could definitely make one for someone older.

I think I might just do that. My daughter is 7 and I might just make one for her.......hmmmmmm

No pics. When I went to take pics last night, I realized I had left my camera attached to the computer the last time I had downloaded my pics and that always kills the battery. So they are charging now.

Barb!!! Woo Hoo!!! You finished!!! That is too cool. This is definitely ONE of those projects that you can do in a weekend, that is for sure.

Poder1, I've made this in an 18 month size before, and I'm starting on a 2T size this week.

Both times, I took a sweater that fit the intended recipient and just crocheted with a slightly larger hook, making sure to hold the crochet up to the example sweater as I went. If you don't have a sample sweater accessible, the message space beneath the original pattern gives some simple directions (someone else asked the same question there).

I started last night with bernat soft boucle and then had a total brain fart:think when I got to row 11 and couldn't understand it at all. So I put it down and weaved in some ends on an FO then looked at the pattern again and:idea. I didn't get too much further before I went to bed but hopefully I'll have time to finish it today. I'm not sure if the guage is right, it's hard to tell with the boucle and I've never made a wearable before.

Barb, my little girl was born on May 18. She decided to be 2 weeks early and then changed her mind when it came time to push and she wouldn't budge! She was 8lbs 12ozs and I had gestational diabetes so I can't imagine how big she'd have been if she'd waited til her due date.

I live in Texas, so we don't get lots of really C-O-L-D weather, but it does sometimes get chilly. I'd like to make one of these for my 2yo DS, but the pattern is for babies. Does anyone have any tips for making a larger version? I'm not good at winging things on my own. THANKS! :manyheart

Donna says (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showpost.php?p=503538&postcount=31) she has made one for an 18 month old so you might want to ask her what the measurements were for that and go from there.

Someone on here just made one for a child in Miami...it was a little bit more holey than the ones you see most of the time, but it sure worked. Here is her (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=36183) post.

Too much fun! :D I found a pair of Mary Janes (http://www.geocities.com/gossgirl2/fakemjs.htm)at Crochet Pattern Central, KnicKnac. I don't know if they are the same ones Donna used, but...
Here's another pair of Mary Janes (http://members.tripod.com/patt_m-ivil/pattscrochetcreationsandmore/id8.html). :hook I couldn't get the picture to come up for me, but... I think I'm going to make a pair of Mary Janes, too. If I have enough yarn..

How much fun is this????

The first link that Mom w/a Motif posted is the exact pattern I used for the Mary Janes. One skein of Homespun made the 6 month sized sweater and the hat. I had to get another skein to make the Mary Janes.

Here is a photo of the 18-month sweater. I modified the pattern to make it a pullover, but it's the same pattern. The measurements are 12" starting chain (so 24" around the bottom) and sleeves that are 7" before folding back.

OK - I'm in. DH is having elbow surgery tomorrow and we were told to expect that whole things to take 5-6 hours. MIL is keeping my little ones, so I will have lots of time to crochet without interruption. :hook

I am going to go stash busting and possibly shopping this afternoon. I am going to take measurements of my two littles ones (almost 2 y/o...wears a 2T) and (2 1/2 y/o...wears a 3T) and see if I can increase the size of the pattern and attempt to make these tomorrow in the waiting room.

I'll let you know about my progress tomorrow night.

The pullover is just darling! I will have to try that for my DGS when he is big enough :lol
I love this pattern and have made several of them (it has become my baby gift of choice, along with matching cap and little star afghan). I love using the painterly homespun because the colors just change and blend so beautifully.

Anyway, I only have pix of three of the sweaters I've made, so I thought I would add them to the mix. I will be starting another one soon for a baby who is due in January...

The Donna, gosh, that's cute too! How did you work the front? Sorry, I'm kinda not too quick with the adjustments of the patterns action. Also, where did you get the cute hat pattern or is it something like crochet in the round and increase to desired size?

Just me, I love the brown set. I have a few balls of LB Suede that did not go as planned so was thinking of making one out of that in those exact same colors.

:2blush Thanks for the nice comments :bheart

From the Lion Brand website, (http://cache.lionbrand.com/yarns/homespun.htm)"Please note that some colors have long, slow color variations that cause them to subtly stripe. This is deliberate and adds to the beauty of the finished garment; such yarns are designated as our 'painterly' colors."
If you scroll down and look at the descriptions next to the yarns, it will say if they are painterly colors.

The colors I used for the sweaters in the photos are (top) Romanesque, (middle) Nouveau and (last) Regency.

Just me, what a great gallery of photos of the finished sweaters...oh yeah, this sweater definitely calls out for a matching hat, and you did so well on ALL of them!

Look at that cutie patootie in the new sweater!!! Les is just adorable! Thanks for sharing the pics Barb!!!

Here is mine from last night...gonna work on a hat and matching mary janes today. I used a strand of RH Baby Econo in "Yummy" with a strand of TLC Baby in White - so another two strander, but this is for a newborn so I used a "J" hook this time...the measurements on it came out what is necessary for a newborn per this site:

http://www.fibergypsy.com/common/children.shtml

I also used some leftover Caron SS in white for the edgings. And I like the look it gave the sleeves...a little flair because the yarn is a bit more chunkier than the babyweight I was using!

Going to update the first post with the new pics!

lulubird6, I'll see if I can describe how I did it.

I worked the back and top part over the shoulders as usual. For the left side, I stopped working the sleeves two or three rows after it's folded over and tied off. (Does this make sense?) For the right side, I worked all the way across the front and across the left sleeve until the left sleeve was complete (skipping some stitches and chaining a few to make buttonholes), and then all the way across the front for the rest of the pattern. There is an extra seam in this sweater that actually runs across the front of the left sleeve, but because Homespun yarn is so great, you cannot see even a hint that that's where it is. I didn't sew the whole sleeve together; I left a flap so that it would be easier to get over Baby's head. I used buttons to close up the flap. This is probably not the best way to have altered this pattern, but I was just playing around at the time, and low and behold, it came out looking good!

An easier way might just be to make two T-shaped pieces (using the pattern up to where the shoulder folds over) and then sew them together. I haven't tried that, though.

The hat pattern I used for the purple set was this hat that I'd made before. I just substituted the Homespun yarn and then just started with round 2 of the crown to eliminate the top knot. http://cache.lionbrand.com/patterns/cvs-babyHat.html

Thanks Barb! I am working on the hat now...booties later on tonight I am sure!

Here is the pic of my friends she did yesterday with me...she just finished weaving in all ends!!! Isn't hers just the CUTEST!!! She used Caron SS in BerryBlue and Orchid, double strand with a "J" hook. She was trying to get about 3 mo size and I think she accomplished it!!! That hat is the hat I am making.

Wow ladies,
These are turning out so beautifully! and quick!!! :clap :tup I'm amazed at how fast you guys are going. I dove into my stash earlier today and have decided for my attempt at upsizing to 2T/3T tomorrow, I am either going to use two strands of WW or go shopping early tomorrow morning for some Homespun. I have some Homespun right now, but I don't have 3 skeins of the same color in a color that I like and I am thinking that it is going take at least 3 skeins (maybe 4??) to make a larger size.

Thanks for your inspiring pictures...gorgeous. And the one with Les actually wearing the sweater...too cute for words...makes me want to have just one more baby...:blink??? Ummm...already have 4 who run me ragged :huh... :scrachin...:2eek...:scared...nah, I don't think so :no . Whew!:whew

I've been doing this all day. It's my first crochet project. I've gotten alot of help and I'm on Row 25 (doing the 12 month size). So, just to be sure, I go back and forth on the chained part too? AFter I chained 14 back on Row 23, I wasn't sure if I went all the way out there.........I know I'm not explaining this right. Let's see......how many stitches for a 12 mos should Row 25 have? This way I'll know if I'm right. Thanks in advance for your help.

I plan to make this sweater over and over and over since it took me so long to learn it!

I'm making one too! Using light pink Jiffy yarn and an M hook (I crochet tightly and the yarn is skinnier, so it's a little bit more lacy than others i've seen -- hopefully it will work out correctly!)

A question for anyone who has done the 12 month size.. How many inches is yours from the bottom to where the sleeves start?

: ) all the encouragement is just so exciting!

October 23rd, 2006, 06:29 AM
Gosh andrea...I don't have a measurement for you, but I am sure someone will chime in this morning sometime for you.

dewbaby00 - there are more than a few that will be trying the 2T to 3T sizes...just stay tuned!!!

Kitty, row 25 should have 37 stitches - yes you go over the chained part.

Ginny, please if you are going to do it for a 4t, please let us know how you do it!

Yes Barb, I am making it for someone that is due in November...she knows she is having a little girl.

Everyone seems to be doing well with this!!! Can't wait to see more photo's of finished projects!

Andrea- On the pattern it says the 12 month size should be 11 inches long. Sooo... I am guesstimating here... (I did the six month size) If mine is supposed to be 10 inches long, and six under the sleeve, a 12 month size would be seven inches under the sleeve? You could keep crocheting until it was as long as you wanted it to be before you get to the sleeve part, though.... Mine, though (of course) is not 10 inches long, it's nine. But I still think it turned out cute. I finished it last night.

Update on my attempt to change pattern to 3T...I had planned on having a huge chunk of time today while DH was having elbow surgery...but there were complications in recovery room (he's fine now) and I didn't get near as much time to work on this as I would have liked.

My initial problem is I have never worked with Homespun before! It was really hard at first, especially crocheting into the starting chain. But, I quickly got the "feel" for it and realized that it was almost better to crochet by touch than by sight. BUT...wow, is it beautiful once it gets worked up...and the color I chose is creating its own stripes!

I have a good idea though of where the sweater it is going and how to do it and I think it should work. I have finished up to row 13 (which is still the first hdc portion since the bigger sizing creates more rows) I'm hoping to get some work done tonight while he sleeps. I am keeping notes and will keep you updated on my progress. Does anyone know if it is against copywright laws to post how you altered a pattern to change the size? Should I check with the designer?

well its a good thing that I only work Mondays. When I got home last night I finished up Charlenes sweater coat (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=36244)then did a matching hat. I have to still take pics of it and get my USB cord to work, it wont acknowledge it is plugged in. Anyway then I started on this one using RH WW in an 18 month, I am not so much going by the numbers listed but my measurements for my dd, I am keeping my notes though for anyone who wants to do WW in an 18 month. I am almost finished the right side then onto the left and a hat. My only thing is I need opinions, I am doing it in the color Buff, it is a tan, should I do a soft white (off white) or black. I am thinking soft white but what does everyone think? I will definately be done today then onto one for my 6 yr old neice who wears a size 8. oooooooooooohhhhhhhhhh

Great choice going with the white. They both are beautiful...the sweater and your little girl! :)

I love the look of the Homespun, but the WW looks great as well. What size hook did you go with? I am basically doing the same approach that you did, going with measurements to change the pattern, but also keeping stitch and row counts as well. Did you guess on the size of the neck opening? Right before I had to start dinner, I was just at that part of the pattern.

If you are sure this is easy, I will probably try it; after I finish 2 'Good Granny Gracious Baby Afghans'. I am just getting started on them. The good thing about MN is that even after I finish the above mentioned projects, hopefully by the twins birth time in Jan., Lord willing, it won't be too late for a sweater! :haha I already have 2 skeins of Homespun, which I bought for Mom to show me how to do 2 strands together, but don't have any other purpose for, yet. (I thought about making the 'Jiffy 4 1/2 hr. Afghan' from Lion brand for my son, but am not sure I will, and don't have nearly all the yarn I'd need for it. I am sure it would take me more than 4 1/2 hrs, too.) Don't know yet who I'd give a sweater to, as my DS is 18, and DD is almost 13. I could start my dream stash of completed items, so that when I need something, I don't have to panic, etc. about meeting a deadline.:faint So, I guess I will let you know when I am ready to start this. :wink Thanks for the idea.

i didn't even know that there was one of these cal's going on! I just finished mine, and posted it to share in the show and tell, and someone directed me over here.
this one is made for a baby arriving next month. I made it from washable angora, and it is soooooooo soft. I opted for a different way of closing the sweater. I didn't like the way that the bottom flaps open so i used sew on snaps instead, and placed them the entire length about two inches apart.

Just keep your specs Kristen...I would love to make this a pullover!!!

I can't believe I missed this:

Does anyone know if it is against copywright laws to post how you altered a pattern to change the size? Should I check with the designer?

There are three comments in a row on that pattern site that basically says that since Julie's design is common licensed it allows derivitive works, and then she says that Julie reassured her offlist that it was ok.

Yay i finished mine too! i'm thinking it needs a hat to match, and i haven't decided if i want to make a flower to put on it.. i think that would be exciting. Any ideas where I can find a pattern for a particularly cute hat or a flower?

I made it with Jiffy yarn and a K hook, and the trim is "Party," a Crystal Palace yarn.. it is soo shiny and pretty.

I just got to row 1 of the new side and if I attach on the outside edge (shoulder, not neck) the rows look wrong. It looks like RS, WS, RS, RS, WS instead of RS, WS, RS, WS, RS. Did anyone else notice this or am I reading wrong? I used Bernat's Haven instead of Homespun and the stitch pattern is really obvious so I can't stand doing it where the pattern doesn't stay the same. I tried just attaching at the neck but that puts me at the wrong side when it comes time to chain again and extend the front on that side.

Does any of this make sense? Any help is appreciated.

Yes, but when I begin at the outside edge it puts me going the same direction as the last row, so it looks wrong. I don't know which side is RS or WS at this point, but it is the same way as the last row. I pulled it out or I'd take a picture.

Laralou- I think I know what you are talking about. That's what I did. I can't tell WS or RS, but my yarn is not the same as what you are using. I think it will even out in the end. I've done two so far, and they both look fine to me. Hope you can figure it out! :hook

I posted a pic on my blog. See how the rows look really obvious? 1 RS and 1 WS = one row. Well, when I crochet per the directions, I get a short row on that shoulder. Is that supposed to happen and just doesn't look as obvious when you use Homespun? Or am I totally crocheting wrong to begin with. I am a total newbie and taught myself totally from books, so I could just really be wasting yarn here...

Oh, woe is me. What's wrong with me. Everyone else "gets it" and I'm still struggling. Second half: I start on the outside......the end of the sweater not the part by the neck. All is well until Row 3:
hdc across......I'm in by the neck?
Row 4: hdc into 3rd ch and Hdc across..........this I don't get at all. I chain up the 8 go into the 3rd ch and I have this piece just hanging there??

Maybe I started at the wrong place.......I thought the outside was the end of the sweater. Now I'm ch 8 by the neck, maybe that's the wrong place?

I could cry. A friend helped me with Row 23 which is the same deal, and I don't remember what we did.

Someone help. I love this sweater, and want to make a few...but I'm totally stuck here. I don't want to think about Option 1 or 2....yet.

If someone could explain like you're talking to a 2 year old about Row 3 etc., I would deeply appreciate it.

Mom w/a Motif
October 27th, 2006, 10:01 PM
Aw, don't be so hard on yourself! You are chaining 8 because that is going to be the front left side. Then you turn and chain in the third chain, and across. (Kinda like when you start with a chain, then crochet into the chain.) Then when you turn and go back (row 4), you hdc all the way across to the end... you will see how it works... I don't know if that helped any... :think

Tina

KittyCrochet

I'm sorry you're having a hard time. If I was there I'd help ya. Do you have a photobucket account? (It's free.)

What is the piece that's sticking up? :think The ch 8 part is going to be the left front side. (Like you already have the front right side...) Now you are crocheting the left front... (by the neck.) If it's on the outside, by the sleeve, then you did attach it wrong.

Mom w/a Motif
October 27th, 2006, 10:29 PM
Okay, your ch 8 part should be laying parallel with the row you just did (horizontally, not vertically) for starters. Then you hdc in the third chain from the hook, and the next remaining chains. Then just keep hdc'ing on to the end of the row. Did you understand it? (I hope?)

Then for row four, you just turn and hdc all the way down (27 hdcs).

Tina

I like your sweater colors, BTW! :yes

KittyCrochet
October 27th, 2006, 10:30 PM

ch 8 turn hdc into 3rd ch..........////and hdc across. How can I go across with the chain sticking up?

Mom w/a Motif
October 27th, 2006, 10:57 PM
It will even out. You keep crocheting all the way down. You are making the left front; the thing sticking out is going to be the left front. Here, I'll take a picture of one of mine to see if it helps...

AWESOME Kitty! Your doing great! I found the option 1 was my best bet, but it really depnds on what you like.

Let us know! That is why we are all here. And by the way Kitty, you can reply to anyone...just use their name in the post when you want to address someone particularly.

I feel bad for missing out on being able to help, I kept meaning to check in yesterday. I guess I was too busy crocheting the size 8 for my neice. I am almost done, I have done all of the back and am working on the right front, after the sleeve. I sure hope that it fits I am going strictly by yarn standards (http://www.yarnstandards.com/childsize.html)measurments, these are just the childrens ones they have adult and baby as well.
Again I need to figure out what color to do the trim in, I am using Carons' deep violet, any suggestions?

Kitty, I know this is a bit late but do you crochet right handed or left handed? I crochet left handed and sometimes because of that have to do the oppisite of what the directions say and sometimes it takes me a couple minutes to figure out what exactly I should be doing.

Kitty, I always do option 1, too. (I didn't think about the left handed thing either, Jessi. My husband is left handed, too....)

Kristen- I don't know if you saw my question about your pullover version (I posted it in the baby children one...) How many stitches wide is it? (What are the measurements, too- across, and then up to the arms?) Did you use RH ww or homespun? I would love to make one in a pullover version and especially size 2; but I don't have anyone here in a size two anymore. :P

Thanks Kristen!

:blush I just saw the yarn measurements chart-is that what you used? Duh.... I can go by that then, thanks Kristen for posting that!

Yes it is. The parents have strong colouring so I'm guessing the baby will be able to carry this colour. Still have the hat to go. (it is 12 months size too that might affect the effect of the colour

I hope you realized that those measurements are actual body measurements and you have to ADD EASE. I'm working on a size 6 for my dd. I based it on other sweaters I have meade her. It is purposely a little big as I want her to be able to wear this as a jacket over a sweatshirt or other more fitted sweater. I looked at several other sweater patterns to get a feel for measurements. Here's (http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/sbflyinghook/detail?.dir=/953c&.dnm=542dre2.jpg) my sweater so far. Agh - you can tell in the photo exactly where I started the 2nd skein (same dye lot!!)Thankfully the 2nd skein does not appear so drastically different in real life.

I have to keep reading the posts to see if you've already finished this!

Ginny so you think I should add an inch width and maybe length if I am going by the measurements chart Lilybean posted? :think

Ginny so you think I should add an inch width and maybe length if I am going by the measurements chart Lilybean posted? :think

Yes you need to add at least an inch depending on what fit you want. If you follow her link to the yarns standard page..then follow their link to explanation info... ok I'm confusing myself... go here (http://www.yarnstandards.com/sizing.html)... to see the explanation of sizing and fit. They say "When sizing sweaters, the fit is based on actual chest/bust measurements, plus ease (additional inches or centimeters). The chart entitled “Fit (http://www.yarnstandards.com/sizing.html#fit)” recommends the amount of ease to add to body measurements if you prefer a close-fitting garment, an oversized garment, or something in-between."

+Your sweater looks good so far by the way. :hook

OK, as much as I DON'T wanna go head-to-head against flying-fast-fingers-Jimmie-Lu :lol, I'm gonna start one too. These are just TOOOO cute!

Here's my question - my DD is about 18 month size. And I'd like to use the Homespun that I have. But attempting the homespun in the past has driven me NUTSO - I can't see the stitches and get frustrated easily. Any tips before I jump into the great divide? ;)

And what size hook have you homespunners used?

Thx!

Knic Knac, I add my thanks for bringing this pattern to the fore. I was looking for something quick and sweet and this totally fit the bill! :cheer Once I get the buttons done, and Blogger stops acting up, I'll post a pic.

Laurie, since I crochet pretty loosely, I had to go down one size from the recommended hooks; I used a J for the larger, and a G for the smaller.

Jimmie Lu
October 31st, 2006, 02:42 PM
Well I am not using homespun for this but in the past I have used a K hook and it makes the loops bigger. I know what you mean about homespun It can be tough (IMHO) to work with
I am using WW I went to a second hand blessing shop and found these mill cones of the stuff I got abou $100 worthfor $6 its pumpkin color and a brownish beige (you know not brown but not beige either. Its a tweener)
I just started the sleeves!

Awww, you all are way too sweet! It's so much fun to have a pattern that is SO adaptable and cute and FAST all at the same time!!! And it's so much fun to see other people's work and how they adapt it to their needs!!!

Ok...I LOVE the blue! I like the way you messed up and it became a center buttoned sweater!!! I am going to have to try that!!!

Kristen, can't wait to see it in a size 8.

I really don't like working with homespun, that is why I opted for a double strand of Caron SS because to me it was roughly the same size...and it worked!

Angeleyes - just let us know when your ready!!!

Clocke! Can't wait to see yours!!!

Oh my gosh Lynda!!! I love the white with the red and black!!!! The ladybug buttons bring it ALL together!!! COOOOOOOL!!!!

I have a feeling this CAL will be lasting ALL winter!!!

Lilybean I can't wait to see yours in a size 8, either! I want to do one in a size 8, too. Is it a pullover version, too? I still haven't gotten started on one in a pullover version; I have one more to make regular for my niece that is due to be here in March. :c9

:lol KnicKnac, I have a feeling I am going to be in this all winter, at least! :hook

Maybe I'll do SS instead then. I'd hate to take a simple fast pattern and make it miserable by using yarn that drives me insane. LOL

Has anyone posted the pullover instructions yet? I'd LOVE to get a copy! My DS loves sweaters but I haven't found a pattern I really like yet but the pic posted earlier in this thread was perfect! (hint, hint...lol). ;)

And see?? Jimmie-lu-fast-flying-fingers is on the sleeves whereas I'm still trying to decide on hook, color, yarn and finishing Halloween costumes!!! ROFL I have too many pots on the stove...umm...too many french fries in the basket...umm...too many ornaments on the tree...umm...just TOO MANY PERIOD. ;)

Laurie- Lilybean kinda told how she did the pullover here (http://www.crochetville.org/forum/showthread.php?t=36611&page=2). (Post #13, scroll down a little...) Ginny (aka Flying hooks) said you should add another inch to the measurements though since those are the actual body measurements. (Hope I'm getting that right.) I want to try one in the pullover version, too (size 2T) but like you said, 'Too many frying pans in the fire' right now. I want to finish up a little what I got going then do another one.

Thanks. This is my second. The one I did with the Caron 1 pounder and the boulce from JoAnn's. The trim is actually black and the buttons have a glittery look to them. :hook I'm making another one just like this except in the bigger 12 month size.
