View Full Version : 3 Day Charity Square-A-Long!

LavenderBear
October 26th, 2006, 11:06 AM
Hello! I've hosted two months of these charity square-a-longs and am FIRED UP for another one, which will be starting on Monday!!! :cheer Get your hooks and yarn ready (this is a GREAT way to use up scraps), set your personal goal, and come join us!!! Here are the rules . . .

Everyone is FREE to participate, no matter what size squares you are making! However, those who are making 6" or larger will be entered into the contest! Like last time, there will be a GRAND PRIZE WINNER for the one who makes the MOST CHARITY SQUARES! And then there will be a drawing of THREE OTHER WINNERS drawn among all participants, no matter how many you've made!! This will begin Monday morning (when you get up and in your time zone) until Wednesday night (when you go to bed in your time zone). I will need everyone to post their TOTAL NUMBER OF SQUARES once their time is up, and I will post the winners Thursday night! I will be participating too, just like before!

Are you ready?! Are you set?! We're almost ready to go!! :yay

I would love to take part in this one, barring any unexpected things cropping up :) Silly question, when the squares are all made, do you want them forwarded to you or are we to donate them to our own 'pet' projects?

Very nice of you to do this, by the way :hook

Ok, I'm just getting into a lot of this, so would someone please enlighten me? What do we do with the finished square(s)? Just to be sure I have it all straight, the Monday you are talking about for a start date is 10/30/06; or am I confused?:confused I will try, but can't commit to anything, as we are getting ready to be able to leave on short notice, as my grandmother in CO is close to death. I am a terrible procrastinator. :turtle If I can't make this one, maybe the next.

Hello! I see some of you are going to join me next week! Yes, it is for this upcoming Monday through Wednesday (10/30 - 11/01), and you may make the squares for your own projects or donate them to any charity of your choice! I personally am making mine for the group I help co-own here in Michigan! We make lapghans, afghans, hats, scarves, etc. for foster children, veterans, the homeless, crisis pregnancy Moms and children, and more!

This is gonna be FUN . . . again!! :clap

So I start on monday morning in my time zone and finish on wednesday in my time zone, is that correct.

I cant wait to start. My lapghan will be for a old aged care home. They are in need of blankets for the residents there.

I've decided that I simply cannot face doing more granny squares. So I've decided to make squares using a double ended hook. I've started one practice square to make sure I can do the pattern correctly. The squares will be approx. 8 1/2 inches each. If my progress on this "practice" square is any indication my goal will be to complete 3 squares by Wednesday night. Yes I said 3!!! So ladies (and any gentlemen) I don't think I'll be competing for the top honors this time. The squares are very labor intensive for me but like I said I'm all granny squared out!
Can't wait to really start tomorrow.

Hi Traci, you asked what I'm going to do when I use up my whole yarn stash. What a silly question!!! Buy more yarn of course! :blush I just want to use up my yarn stash once in my life. Like some people want to climb Mt. Everest just because its there. I want to use up the stash just because its there. I really think I can do it. By the way everyone, I haven't started any of my squares yet. I'm homeschooling, cleaning bathrooms, sorting coupons and then doing paper work for my husbands business. But my one daughter has a ballet class for an hour today so maybe I can get started then.

I am amazed at how well this is going this time.

I completed my 12 white squares to complete one laprobe that I had been keeping for this challenge. (i had three squares in a bright colour that I started on the bus ride home with the bright Rose yarn)

I have now completed the 12 centres (granny's daughters) for my next laprobe squares and completed one of those as well.

that's 13 squares just after lunch. could get a couple more done but don't want to ruin my wrists for the next 2 days.

I am loving this contest this time out. Maybe because I only have to put on the push for 3 days this time.

just a quick check on a rule...

Square is loosely defined, right? a hexagon would qualify for instance - as long as it fits the 6inch designation?

October 30th, 2006, 07:02 PM
Well, I do stay at home and I got 16 done so far (it's heading to 6:00pm) but I find that I am now "back at square one".

The second square that I wanted to finishwas not working for a contest. the yarn was fighting me for every stitch and my wrists started complaining. So.. I am going to make more of the granny a la harper that I started with this morning. I can always find a colour to use for the centre squares and the white goes quickly.

I may try the easy daisy pattern or the hexagon motif that I found today.

So, for today... I'm at 16 squares so far with a couple more possible. I need to find another square though.

i am really liking the fact that so many are signing in with totals and items of interest.

Hello everyone!!!!!!! You guys have been doing some SERIOUS square making today!!! I got home from classes about 20 minutes ago and am about to dive into making some more squares before I head to bed! I'll post how many I've completed before I shut the the computer down! And I'll be back after I take our dog to the vet for her blood work in the morning!

Here's some questions for you guys . . .

1) What colors are you making your squares?
2) Are your squares solid in color or multi-colored?
3) What will you make with your squares?
4) Did you set a personal goal? If so, how many?
5) Isn't it GREAT to get together and make items for charity together?

I'm off to make some squares and watch some Nick @ Nite! BBL!

I got a bit of a late start, I wound up having to work today & it was kinda busy since it's Monday.. so I only got 2 done at work. Made a few more after dinner, so I'm only up to 9, looks like I'll hafta try & make up some time tomorrow. My squares are 8½" :think regular ol' RH WW, H hook, shades of browns & creams.. some solid, some multi.. I have set no goals, I have NO clue what I'm gonna make with 'em, I guess that will come when I find out how many I have when I'm done :lol And yes, I love contributing to charity this way... I never seem to be able to do it financially, so I figure this is almost as good! :manyheart

I thought I would have more energy tonight, despite my long day, but I was wrong! I am SO ready for bed and am going to sign off for the night! I made 13 squares today, and my goal was 12! :yay Here are my answers to the questions I asked . . .

1) What colors are you making your squares? So far peach, baby blue, white, and raspberry.

2) Are your squares solid in color or multi-colored? So far the peach and baby blue ones are solid, and the white and raspberry are together to make multi-colored squares.

3) What will you make with your squares? I am making the squares to sew together for scarves to match the loomed foster kids' hats!

4) Did you set a personal goal? If so, how many? My goal is 12 squares per day, so 36 in all for the three days!

5) Isn't it GREAT to get together and make items for charity together? Even though we are spread out all over the world, I LOVE that we can get together here online and work toward the same goal of making charity items! The internet has definitely been a blessing in this department!

Okay, I'll chat with you guys again tomorrow! Keep up the GREAT work!!! :ghug

Hi Kelly

Yes its great doing this. I am having so much fun with it. My 12 year old daughter has been watching me do this and has now wanted to learn to crochet which is great.

1) What colors are you making your squares? I am only using light blue and will use a dark color to crochet them together putting one more row in as I do this.

2) Are your squares solid in color or multi-colored? Solid

3) What will you make with your squares? ghan for Reynella Lodge Home for the aged.

4) Did you set a personal goal? If so, how many? 30 squares. Im up to 16 squares and its day 2 nighttime so Im keeping on track to get to this figure. I will obviously have to do more to make the ghan.

How is everyone else doing. I wonder how many we will do all together.

Here's some questions for you guys . . .

1) What colors are you making your squares?
2) Are your squares solid in color or multi-colored?
3) What will you make with your squares?
4) Did you set a personal goal? If so, how many?
5) Isn't it GREAT to get together and make items for charity together?

1 and 2) My sqaures are all different! I have a mixture of solid and multi-colored, green, brown, cornmeal, off white, periwinkle and grey. I get bored with the same thing over and over so I am trying to mix up the colors and combo's with out giving myself too many ends to sew in!

3) I'm sending my squares to you Lavenderbear...lol... I don't have a clue what you'll do with them!

4) My personal goal is 17 or more per day. Total 51.

5) I love this CAL! Yes it is wonderful to see so many people working toward helping others. For those of you who aren't such fast crocheters and don't have the luxury of being home, don't feel intimidated by those big #'s some folks have... the giving comes from the heart, and all ends up blessing someone else... so just keep doing what we're doing!

Ok, I'm off to try for today's goal!:manyheart

WOW. I'm impressed with you guys :nworthy I feel so not worthy. I got home last night from work and was ready to crochet away. Of course my dh wanted to go to poker so that left me at home with the kids by myself and I just could not get it together. Every time I sat down, they wanted something. And tonight is trick or treating and I work all day so probably won't get much done tonight. I'll just rest up my hands today so I can crochet away tomorrow. My goal was to get 15 done altogether, so like I said :nworthy (not worthy). I have only 3 done so far.

Oh well, it is for a good cause so even 1 is better than none. :D

I'm just sooo awestruck by you guys. You are my heros.:fame

1) What colors are you making your squares? rainbow varigated, turquiose, purple, lime green, and bright yellow

2) Are your squares solid in color or multi-colored? Multi-colored

3) What will you make with your squares? Sending my squares to Kelly for her to put together ghans for Project Rest Assured

4) Did you set a personal goal? If so, how many? 15. I see Kelly needs 49 to make a ghan though so it might be my personal goal to see how many I can get done this weekend so I can send her enough for a ghan.

5) Isn't it GREAT to get together and make items for charity together? This is my first time and I love it. It is so fun to have others working on the same thing. :clap

You guys again are making excellent progress. I will be cheering you on while I'm at work :cheer

Well a little update:
I've got 8 done so far, although my first 3 are a little under 6" the other 5 are a little over 6". :think So for the contest I guess I only have 5 :D But I hope to get more done today, don't have any plans but to crochet, crochet, crochet!!! We have trick-or-treat tonight so I don't think I'll get a lot done tonight.

Here's my answers to the questions:
1) What colors are you making your squares?
Claret, Soft Navy and Gold (RH SS) 6" squares
2) Are your squares solid in color or multi-colored?
Solid
3) What will you make with your squares?
I'll probably make a lapghan and donate to a local nursing home or maybe a doggie blanket for the dog shelter
4) Did you set a personal goal? If so, how many?
not really
5) Isn't it GREAT to get together and make items for charity together?
I think its great. This is the first time I've done anything like this and I'm having a lot of fun trying to get as many done as I can. I'm not sure if I'll get the most done, but it's nice to work with everbody to help different charities.

Everbody's doing great so far! I think we're going to have a big number of squares when this is done! :cheer

Bad news for me today. I really, really, really have to finish 1.5 Pink Hearts scarves (for breast Cancer Awareness - from Knitty) I have promised myself that a friend of mine (an 84 yr old survivor) will have one for every member of her survivors' group and she needs these last two before Thursday.

I should be able to finish them today and get back in here tomorrow. I might even get a square or two in today but priorities are there for a purpose. Friends who have survived are at the top of my list right now.

Looks like we have some NEWBIES and are getting MANY squares made!!!! Don't forget - - even one square made is a job WELL DONE!! And every square made is a blessing for someone in need!! :yes

This morning I've gotten 4 squares done, so that brings my total to 17 so far! I am almost at my halfway point for my goal and will pick back up after I get back from taking our dog, Wendy, for bloodwork this morning!

Can't wait to see what our GRAND TOTAL is going to be! I have a feeling it's going to be higher than the other two times we've done these charity square-a-longs! Wouldn't that be WONDERFUL?! :c9

Okay, I've got to go get Wendy ready to go to the vet? After her staying overnight there last week I'm concerned she may not be so eager to go this time around! I don't blame her, but she's gotta go! Be back later!

This will begin Monday morning (when you get up and in your time zone) until Wednesday night (when you go to bed in your time zone).

That is a quote from the first post.

Quite friankly, I was going to keep going until I went to bed from the Wed's (today's) wake up time. for me that happens to be about 2 am Thursday.

In my little pea brain it is still Wednesday until I do go to bed.

Hello everyone! I'm sorry I didn't come back online yesterday to let you know how many squares I got done and to encourage you along before the last day today! I got 30 squares done so far (13 on Monday and 17 on Tuesday) and my goal is 6 more by the end of the day! I will then have enough to make 4 matching scarves to the foster hats I've made! I'll need more scarves than that for the other hats, but this helps make a nice dent into the project!

CONGRATS to all of us who made one or more squares! Most of us still have another day to go, so keep on crocheting away! :yay Aussie, CONGRATS on getting 28 squares done!! WTG!!

Remember that there will be one GRAND WINNER for the person who makes the most squares and THREE OTHER WINNERS for those who post their final totals and get their name into the drawing - - no matter how few or how many you make!! So keep up the GREAT work and be sure and post your numbers before you head to bed in YOUR time zone! And, yes, I will be doing another charity square-a-long next month! :cheer

I was just wondering if we could make some "Equivalent" rules for our CALs

it takes four 3 inch squares to make a 6 inch square so could we count 3 in sq. divided by 4 to put into the total.

Likewise, a 12 inch square is equal in area to four 6 inch squares. could we multiply by four for those who make these?

Now I realize/think that you can make a 12 inch square faster than you can make four 6 inch squares but it just seems that some credit should be given to those who are working under the limit or over the limit.

I don't think we need to make alowances for 7 or 8 inch squares but what do we think about 3 inch and 12 inch ones? They are just in that perfect ratio to the six.

I don't think we need to make alowances for 7 or 8 inch squares but what do we think about 3 inch and 12 inch ones? They are just in that perfect ratio to the six.
It takes me 10 minutes to do a 3 " squares and 12 to do a 6" square...30-50 minutes to do a 12" square...so I am not sure that we should penalize people that do smalller squares...I thought this challenge was for charity and to have fun. And I think that anyone that did even 1 has helped someone along the way...kudos for those that can do such great work

I got 6 (not 12") squares done, mainly Wednesday. Surely would have done a few more, if I hadn't been picking flowers, attending a 4 hr. visitation,(Mon.) and preparing for and attending my grandma's funeral,(Tues.) in another state. What I did accomplish was between naps in the car, and had to redo quite a few times,:bang due to not being totally awake, I guess.
Hopefully better luck next time.

Ok, first off, Lavenderbear has had an issue come up and has asked me to take over the closing of the CAL. Her dog is very sick with lukemia and has to be put down tomorrow, please keep them in your prayers.

Next order of business, I have 5 people that haven't reported totals yet, I'll give them till tomorrow evening, and then I'll draw names.

The prizes will only be drawn for people who made 6 inch squares and above, but as someone stated, the TRUE winners are the people, or animals that will benefit from the making of these squares. You ladies are truely remarkable!

Anyone wanting to send squares to Lavenderbear please PM me, I have her shipping address.

The total so far (including ALL squares made) is 873!!!!! WTG Ladies!!!:cheer :yay :clap

First I'd like to say that my thoughts and prayers go out to Lavenderbear.. I'm sorry about your dog. :( Our pets become part of the family and its hard to let one of them go. I think a :ghug might help you get through this. Take care.

I also agree that the true winners are the people or animals who recieve these blankets or other items. I think its great for all of us to work together to make the squares and send them to a charity of their choice. I think the contest motivates us to want to make as many as we can, but we all have busy lives and may not get as many as they would have liked but whatever the number it is it will help in someway.

Everyone did a great job! I look forward to next month when we do this again!:cheer

Yeah I hear ya darski, my hands tend to ache if I do to much. They used to go numb all the time but I had Carpel Tunnel surgery on both of my hands back in May (2 weeks apart) but they still ache some and get a little stiff by my thumbs. I think I might try some of the baby yarn next time, I seem to go faster with that. It's softer and not as stiff as the regular WW yarn. :D

Lavenderbear, I'm so sorry for your loss, I didn't write it, but this always helped me with the loss of a beloved pet:

RAINBOW BRIDGE
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I want to thank all of you for your prayers, well wishes, and hugs - and Kiki for the Rainbow Bridge sharing. All of these have touched me VERY MUCH! We are still in a state of shock over Wendy's diagnosis of acute leukemia and her being with us only a few days afterwards. I am missing her TERRIBLY today, but I know she's with new friends and our former pets. And also with my FIL's dog that just passed one week ago in her sleep. It's been ROUGH, but she's all healed now . . . playing, sniffing, and running to her heart's content! And she was FAMOUS for being a licker, so I'm sure she's licking everything in site!! She will always be my Wendy Girl! We were very blessed in adopting and having her these past 4 years! :manyheart

CONGRATS to everyone for making charity squares during this square-a-long! I had to refocus several times as I was BLOWN AWAY by the number we completed in just three day's time!!! WOWZER!!! MUCHAS GRACIAS to Crystal who is helping me in finalizing this round!! She has been MY ROCK through all of this, along with my hubby!!! :hug

I'll let you know when we'll be doing the next round! Keep your hooks warmed, your yarn stocked, and your patterns handy in the meantime! Speaking of patterns, please share those you've used!!

Have a Blessed weekend! And, again, CONGRATS to all of us for making these charity squares - - no matter how many or how few!! The number doesn't matter in the end; the love put into making them is what blesses us and the receivers! Yes! :yes

I agree with Darski. It seems to me that with a "crunch" like 3 days I get more done because I know time is short, and I can focus on that for a few days, but definately not a week. Even 5 days seems long to me. But that's just my opinion.:hook
