Lionbrand yarn (www.lionbrand.com) has a free pattern called Prayer Shawl. It is easy to make and you can substitute the yarn if you choose. It's a large rectangle shawl you can easily wrap-up in. It's really nice and cozy. I made one for my daughter (31) who is also having a tough time.
You must setup a login, but everything is free and lots of patterns.

i've had to frog seraphina more than four times now. had to put it aside.....
