View Full Version : holiday SNOWMAN crochetalong!

my momma's been through some stress this year, so i want to surprise her and do our whole christmas tree in snowmen, because they're her favorite thing around this time of year.

2nd part of the inspiration for this crochetalong is that, in case you haven't read my other posts around the site, i work at michael's, and i do the kids club craft class every saturday. last saturday we did little clay snowmen. it started out as just a basic snowman with a hat and scarf, but the kids were really having fun with it so i encouraged them to get creative and make their snowman unique and do whatever they wanted to it. one little girl even made a mom and baby snowman with little gifts sitting under a little pipecleaner trellis. SO cute!!

soo i thought this would be a fun crochetalong to get everybody ready for the holidays!! let's all make little snowmen and personalize them however we want and see how many different ones we can come up with! there's tons of simple patterns for snowmen on crochetpatterncentral.com, under christmas, and then under winter stuff.

so who's with me?!

I want a mr and mrs melting for my hallway - it's going to be too too too cute

I am going to make mine a tad larger so they show up in a long hallway

If I can find the time and the scraps of yarn, I would love to join you in this CAL! My mom collects snowmen, and it's kind of a tradition to get her at least one every Christmas. This year I want to make her one...so I found a simple looking pattern that I think I can do. It's pretty big (19 inches tall), so I'm thinking of filling the bottom with a bag of rice/bean/sand to make it a doorstopper instead of just stuffing it with fiberfill. If anyone wants to see the pattern, I've linked to it below.
This will be my first CAL, so I'm looking forward to it! :2snowman

I think I'll join in on this one. I love snowmen and have been collecting them every year if I can. I was thinking of doing the door greeter one. I seen it on here somewhere before. But I like some of the others as well, I might have to do more than one:hook I'll have to get some white yarn, and I might have to wait until after the 6 day charity square cal.

I would love to join in on this one, but I have to finish my secret project first. But maybe by next week I can join in with the rest of you. Love Snowmen!!! and I do my living room in them and one of my Christmas trees is all snowmen!!:manyheart I must hurry up and finish other project first. I love the melting one and the doorknob one. But I also have one in a pattern book here that is made with strips of material crocheted. Its adorable and I have made it in the past with yarn and giving them away as gifts. Time to make one for me!!

Wish I had thought of crocheting some. I found some cute, cheap, plastic ones with names on them. Bought a "family" for my friend and her family. So that may be an idea, embroidery an initial on the tummy of them for the family. Or even spell out a family name (if short enough). These are such cute patterns I may make one to add to this family, maybe with their last name initial since the plastic ones has the first names. That would be cute and tie it all together. A bigger one for the table or something.
Just thought I'd suggest the idea.

I am trying to write a pattern but it is pretty much a crochet by the seat of your pants thingy. Most of you could probably copy it if you want one.

I might still get the lights across the top or add a brim ... we'll see.

Just found this post and i am about done with a snowman that I made out of plastic bags. i needed to make b/c i heard that people make staffed things out of plastic and use what the handles that they cut off to use for the staffing. It does work great for staffing. I just need to finish stuffing it and make a hat from trash bags and a scarve. Don't know what color bags i want to use for that. The pattern that i am is from a snowman that someone gave to me for christmas some years back. While i hope i can put a picture up here when I am done.

That is toooo cute! I don't have a mantle either :D , the first thing that popped in my head was it would be a cute little stocking for the kids. Santa fills our stockings with little things, so the big stockings don't look full and my oldest always looks soooo disappointed(not that he doesn't spend 10 minutes rippin through everything else to realize he only has the stocking left!)

darski
November 17th, 2006, 12:28 AM
A mantle mitten is a replacement for a stocking. I just think they are cute and always wanted to make one. i was thinking that the thumb would be a neat place for some very special but small item.

I finished my snowman! :yay I started him around 10:30 a.m. this morning & finished him up aroung noon. He is an ornament that I had in a book my Mom gave me. I added a big jingle bell under his scarf for a little added bonus. I must've used all of my black buttons so I just sewed his eyes & mouth on. I think he still looks cute. I was also suppose to use a craft ball for the inside but I just stuffed him instead. I basically worked with what I had. :D

:lol Three times since 2002! (Probably one a year, actually...) The carrot nose is actually fleece. The pattern was in the magazine. (Crafting Traditions, the Jan/Feb 2002 issue, out of print now...) You cut out the fleece then mark dots all over. Then when you sew it up, you pull the thread through the dots to make it look like a real carrot.

I want to try one of your little guys now. (I need to finish an afghan first though!)

Here's my snowy little doorman! I guess he's not very little, though, seeing as he is 21 inches tall! (Darski, you'll have to have a big container of coffee creamer if you use this pattern! :P) I didn't have everything the pattern called for, so I used felt and dressed it up a bit with sequins and beads. He turned out great, if I do say so myself! ;) I'm looking forward to giving him to my mom!

That's a cute pattern, might try it myself:clap If I can find the time and the scraps of yarn, I would love to join you in this CAL!
:2snowman

darski- i don't know if the pattern was a melting snowman but b/c it's white on white i was telling people it looks like a melting snowman. and i don't think it would be a good idea to put it outside. Due to the rain and the stuffing is packed so that the snowman is almost firm, some water may stay in and i don't want to know what would happen.

And for all you that can't see it that really hurts me. I want you all to see it. The only thing that i can think of since it is from my yahoo page is maybe you don't have a yahoo account or you were not logged on in yahoo. I wanted to insert the picture so that you didn't have to clink the link but the insert image on this reply post keeps asking for URL of the image and I even tried to make a new folder to copy and pasta. Most of the crocheted teddy bear patterns could be made into snowmen by just leaving off the ears and muzzles then making the typical snowman face.

Crochet pattern Central is the place to go for patterns . Here is the Teddy bear page from there:

I'm sorry I haven't posted since this started. I came up with a little snowman myself which was a first for me and I thought he came out pretty good. I made hime with Bernat Baby Softee and size G hook. He's only a couple of inches big. Then I made one using Bernat Softee Chunky but I gave him a santa hat and scarf.

(Clickable)

The blue is a baby light blue it's not that bright but I took all the pics with my cell phone and touched them up in Photoshop. I didn't care too much for the eyes and and stuff, so with the Santa one I added some beads and did the nose with crochet thread ( I got the Idea from a previous post I think her name is AJ, she posted her snowman pattern on her blog. Thanks AJ, lol)
